26. WEStvIEW CEMEtEry (www.westviewcemetery.com) A spur trail from the BeltLine corridor will run along Westview Drive to the historic Westview Cemetery. Established in 1884, Westview is the largest cemetery in the southeast and many of At-lanta’s pioneers are at rest here. Increased access to cemetery grounds could expand its presence as both a greenspace and historic space along the BeltLine.

27. BookEr t. WAShINGtoN hIGh SChooL (www.apskids.org/washington)this school has a strong legacy and has contributed to much of Atlanta’s municipal leadership through the years. Founded in 1924, Booker t. Washing-ton high was the first African-American public secondary school established in Atlanta and was the only high school for African-American students until 1947. It remains an active high school in the APS system and is listed on the National register of historic Places. Among other prominent alumni, Martin Luther King Jr. graduated from this school before matriculating to Morehouse College. this is the 3rd public high school that falls alongside the corridor. A potential BeltLine stop on Martin Luther King Drive would give students easy mobility to travel to and from school

28. AtLANtA UNIvErSIty CENtEr (www.aucenter.edu)the Atlanta university Center, including Clark At-lanta university and Morris Brown College, is just up the road on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive about 1 mile east of the corridor. the BeltLine could present additional transportation options for those commuting to the center.

the BeltLine runs on the western boundary of Washington Park, then connects with MArtA’s Proctor Creek Line traveling north

29. WAShIngton PArKWashington Park was the first park established for African-Americans in the city and remains a key anchor for this community. housing many ameni-ties like the tennis courts, natatorium, and picnic grounds, the park s h ghly frequented by those in the neighborhood. the BeltLine corridor forms the western boundary of the park. the transit route and trail paths leading to the park will give resi-dents of nearby communities more convenient ac-cess to come and enjoy this greenspace.

30. JoSePh e. Boone BouLevArD (formerly Simpson road)A potential BeltLine stop along Joseph e. Boone Boulevard would raise its function as a key east-west transportation route to and from town, and could help to stimulate economic development in this community. Boone Boulevard becomes Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. closer to town. the corridor here adjoins with MArtA’s Proctor Creek line, and a potential combined stop with MArtA (at Mayson-turner road, midway between Ashby Station and Bankhead Station) could enhance both mobility and commercial growth for the neighborhood.

one proposed plan could have the BeltLine corridor follow MArtA’s Proctor Creek line (above on bridge) as it travels north through Maddox Park

LEFT (north) after high railroad trestle into Maddox Park (following North Avenue). 0.3 mi

31. MADDox PArkthe circuitous street network surrounding it, and the City facilities that operate on the grounds, present challenges for area residents to access and maxi-mize their use of Maddox Park. the City facilities will be relocated as the BeltLine develops, allow-ing the greenspace to expand, and enhancing the vitality of this park. In addition, better access to the park will come by way of the BeltLine. one of the planning options proposes that the transit path follow MArtA’s Proctor Creek line on the west side of the park, while the pedestrian trail runs along its eastern boundary. A potential greenway con-nection to Westside reservoir Pa k would further extend the park’s functionality.

Some options for the BeltLine route utilize the rail corridor on the eastern edge of Maddox Park. this corridor pases under DL hollowell Parkway to the right as you exit the park.

Multiple options are still in consideration for the corridor’s route through the remainder of this section. one option has it trace Marietta Blvd.’s path up to huff rd. other options have it parallel Joseph e. Lowery Blvd. (about ¼ mile to the east) up to Marietta St. or utilize existing rail corridors to the east.

BANkhEAD ENDS. kNIGht PArk/hoWELL StAtIoN BEGINS.

32. WEStSIDE rESErvoIr PArk/BELLWooD QUArrythe former Bellwood Quarry property is slated to become Westside reservoir Park, Atlanta’s largest greenspace at approximately 300 acres. At the heart of this park will be a water reservoir (for-merly the quarry’s pit), that spans 45 acres and is up to 450 feet deep in places. In addition to being an aesthetic centerpiece, the reservoir will increase the city’s water capacity by 20 or more days. Nat-ural paths and landscaped trails will intertwine on park grounds, and plans call for an eventual spur trail from the BeltLine to connect Westside Park to the Silver Comet trail in Smyrna.
