Why “Easter” Bothers Me and Is Still My Favorite Holiday
For all I love about Easter, there are also things that bother me about it. First of all, I have never appreciated how our society secularizes Christian holidays. Is Christmas about Santa Claus or the birth of our Savior?
Is October 31st about collecting candy or celebrating the day Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the door in Wittenburg? Is Easter about egg hunts and bunnies or is it about celebrating Christ’s victory over death? Santa,

mask the true meaning of these holidays, they cheapen the glorious magnificence of our celebrations.
Second, the word “Easter” is also a confusing term. The English word itself has no Christian meaning and is probably a variation of “Estre,” the goddess of springtime. When the Roman Empire adopted Christianity as the official state religion, many “pagan” traditions and celebrations were re-tasked by the church. The more traditional term for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection is the word “Pasch,” from the Greek word we translate as “Passover.” In 1 Corinthians 5:7, Paul refers to Christ as our “paschal lamb” or Pasch. Other languages such as Italian, French, Danish, Dutch, Spanish, Etc., have preserved this term to refer to the “Easter” celebration. The word Easter is confusing, but it stuck, so we use it.
Third, we don’t celebrate Easter long enough. We tend to think of Easter as just one day, but “Easter” is actually a season; preceded by lent. Because the explosive force of the Jesus’ resurrection was too magnificent to be contained within one day’s celebration, the church set aside fifty days of celebration. Often referred to as “the Great Fifty Days,” the Easter celebration was based on the Jewish festival of fifty days that began with the opening of the harvest season two days after the start of Passover and extended until what became known as the Day of Pentecost. For these fifty days, Christians have traditionally greeted each other with the phrases, “Christ Is Risen… He Is Risen Indeed!”
Lastly, Easter bothers me because
even the more experienced Christians among us fail to fully grasp the significance of what Easter means to us. We know that Easter celebrates Christ’s resurrection, but we fail to recognize that this one event drastically impacted our faith and spiritual lives. Jesus and his resurrection affects everything of significance. Jesus is the very center of
the universe, the One in whom “all things hold
together” (Colossians 1:17). Like a cosmic explosion that reverberates in all directions, his resurrection gives Christians a new understanding of the past, present, and future.
The entire Christian faith hinges on this one single event. Because Jesus rose from the dead, it verified and validated everything that he said and everything he claimed to be. And that’s why Easter is such a big deal for Christians, because our entire faith hinges, not on a teaching, not on a philosophy, but on an actual event in history. If Christ did not rise from the dead, there is no point in being a Christian, our faith would be worthless, and there would be no hope in life after death (1 Corinthians 15:12-19).
This Easter/Pasch, make your celebration meaningful and memorable. Make church attendance on Good Friday and Easter Sunday your top priority for starting this season. Invite your friends and family to celebrate with you. This year we are introducing a new format for a Good Friday Service. Come out to Selma FBC on Friday, April 18th at 6:30 PM to remember Christ’s loving sacrifice and be prepared for one of the most meaningful and memorable Good Friday Services you have ever experienced. Let your heart fill with gratitude, praise, and worship as you face the emotions and magnitude of what Christ did for us. On Easter Sunday, join us at 10:00 AM, for a grand celebration to kickstart the “Great Fifty Days.” Featuring our Choir and brass ensemble, worship our Risen Lord, through song and His Word. Rejoice as

Student Mission Trip
April 13-18 San Francisco City Impact “This is a great way to not just help others but share the love and grace that God has shown me.” -David Helm
Our youth group is partnering with City Impact over Easter Break to minister to those living in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco. This area is stricken with poverty and is in desperate need of the grace of God. The students will be delivering meals, ministering on the street, working on construction projects, working in rescue missions & soup kitchens, working in schools and so much more. Information is available in the back of the sanctuary if you would like to know more about the trip, what to pray for or financially supporting the team. Pastor Luke is also available to answer any questions.
Circle Dorcas - Special Guest Jan Wheatley
Thursday, April 10th 10am Fireside Room Jan Wheatley will be sharing about the situation in Ukraine. She will also share about Alex & Patrice Dimitriv, missionaries in the Ukraine. A note from Alex & Patrice:
Please pray for the Ukraine. The western region of Ukraine is very calm right now but the east is in chaos. Putin has closed the boarder to Crimea and no one knows what he will do next. Ukraine Prayer List: Please pray for... **The new government for wisdom, strength, and unity... **The people of Ukraine for unity and for strength and understanding of the truth... **That Satan's lies would be seen for what they are and not have power over the people... **That God's truth and love would be spread through this.... ***Forgiveness and understanding between Russian speaking and Ukrainian speaking people... ***The Tatars (group of people who originally lived in Crimea, but Russians hate them) for their safety if they are still in Crimea and for provision for those who left Crimea with nothing... *** The Ukrainian soldiers that are still in Crimea now behind enemy lines, for their safety and freedom... ***The church to rise up, pray and be God's hands and feet of love in the midst of this... *** God to intervene and stop Putin from going any further.. *** Us, Alex and I to be His pillars of strength, peace, hope and love to all we meet and in everything we do. Thank you and God bless!!!
Missions Information
Many of the missionaries send us letters throughout the year. Please check the Mission bulletin board in the back of the sanctuary. Our missionaries covet your prayers.

PASTOR LUKE CHOW AND CODY FEDOR
Hi Church family!
March has been a busy and exciting month for the student
ministry. We’ve had a parent meeting, a work day, a junior
high lock-in, the Carlos O’Brien fundraiser lunch, the For All
Seasons concert, and the Rick Alonzo outreach! Currently,
the junior high ministry is continuing with its X-men vs.
Avengers competition series, while the high school ministry
has begun its new series on worship. A few pictures from this
month’s events are below.
The primary focus of the student ministry this month and the
next will be missions. God has called all of us to be full-time
missionaries in our schools, our workplaces, and within our
social circles. As a result, almost all of the activities and
events from March have been to prepare our students to be
missionaries.
From April 14-18, our student ministry will be partnering with a
missions organization called City Impact, and we will
be going on a mission trip to inner-city San Francisco.
3/20/14
While the majority of our ministry’s events are introspective
and focus primarily on benefiting our students, the purpose
of this event is to remind our students that we, the people of
God, have been blessed to be a blessing, and that we are
all called to be ministers of the gospel.
Also, please be advised that the next student ministry Parent
Meeting will be rescheduled to Sunday, May 4th at 9:00 am
in the Youth House. It was originally scheduled for May 11th,
but I just realized that that day is Mother’s Day.
Thanks so much for your overwhelming support of our
student ministry. We have been incredibly blessed by your
prayer and financial giving. Please continue to support us in
these ways as we attempt to make great the name of Jesus!
Pastor Luke

will be a blessing… all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:2

PALM SUNDAY
On Palm Sunday, April 13th, we
will have the children of the
church walk around the church
with palm branches. This is a
reminder of when Christ rode into
Jerusalem on a donkey to fulfill
prophecy. The crowd spread
their garments and some cut
palm branches on the road.
They shouted “Praise God for the
Son of David! Blessings on the
one who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in
the highest heaven!” Matt. 21:1-11
This was a great time for the people to see the
prophet from Nazareth but a sad time for Jesus as he
knew what was coming. We can rejoice even more
than the crowd did because we understand the whole
story. Jesus did not stay on the cross...HE HAS RISEN,
HE HAS RISEN INDEED!
Do you know what a Beerock is?
A Beerock is a pastry baked with ground
beef, onions and shredded cabbage. We are
selling them at the Selma Raisin Festival, May
1st, 2nd, & 3rd. In the past we have sold pizza
and would like to try something new and
something that no one else sells.
The money we raise selling the beerocks and
drinks helps children and the student ministry
go to camp this summer. Camp is not cheap
and we want to make it easier by offering this
fundraising
opportunity. A sign up sheet with time slots will
be available soon in the back of the sanctuary.
If you know you can help with set up and take
down (we need trucks and
man power) please let us
know by calling the office or
contacting someone in the
Student or Children’s
departments.

Update:
God Bless the First Baptist Church Family, It’s a privilege and an honor to be a member of this Baptist Church. I came to Bethel Home on October 23 at 10:00 am on a Tuesday morning in 1988. This October it will be 27 years that I have been here and at the church. When Craig Statton came in 1993, he was a good pastor. All of the past pastors have been good and did a good job while they were here.. When I came to church, I looked around and this was a nice church, but there was no elevator. So I prayed to God and we got an elevator in 2007. I cut the ribbon when it opened. My smile makes your day and your smile makes my day. My personality and my attitude is the best. Everyone in the church when they see me, they greet me and shake my hand. I remember the first day I came. I was very nervous. On that day I said to myself, “What kind of people go here?” I didn’t know. Dan Sparks was putting out signs and I came up to him and he shook my hand and said, “Come on in!” Since then, I have been in this church. I am very pleased with everybody, their attitude and their smiles. One morning, Craig Statton said he was leaving and I dictated a letter to him. It was hard for me because it was hard to see him leave. Now we have a new pastor, Seth Pankratz. His smile and his personality is very nice. When I go in he says, “Hi Gilbert, how are you?” If we get a van, it would be easier for me to get to church. I am getting old and I don’t know how long I can use a wheel chair to get there.. I am a spirit. I have a soul. I live in a body. God said it. I believe it. And that settles it. Gilbert Shamshoian
Dear Members fo the First Baptist Chruch, I would like to thank you for your continued support of Garfield School’s Box Tops for Education program. I have been sending in the box tops that your church family and our school families have been donating. So far this year, I have sent in right around $100.00. We are using the monies from the box tops program to help fund special activities to reward the students. Thank you again for your help and support of this program. The students and staff here at Garfield truly appreciate it. Sincerely, Mandy Balakian Box Tops for Education Coordinator

OUR CHURCH FAMILY CELEBRATIONS
Wanted! Sound System Operators
Our church has many different events that take place during the year and we are in need of more people trained to use our sound system. We have wonderful people in place and would like to train a few more in the near future. If this an area of giftedness or interest to you, please see Pastor Seth or call the church office.
If you aren’t seeing your name on our birthday or anniversary list, please call the church office and share your special dates with us. (We won’t post the year!) We very much wish to celebrate you here in the Lift Letter and in our prayers.
