Budding entrepreneurs THE New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has defended itself against concerns over its level of future road maintenance funding, saying it has increased funding to the Selwyn district more than in most other parts of the country. The statement comes after Selwyn View reported Malvern councillor John Morten’s concerns that the recommendations of a Government-appointed Road Safety Task Force might lead to not enough funding being provided to maintain the standard of some of the district’s roads. Following the article, Selwyn MP Amy Adams made her own enquiries with NZTA and forwarded the response to Selwyn View. According to NZTA, Selwyn District Council was seeking $26.8 million for the 2012/15 period, an increase of 12 percent from the previous three years. While funding had not been finalised, NZTA has indicated it will instead approve a 5.4 percent increase, to $25.2 million. This was still higher than the average national increase. “Our national investment in local road maintenance and operations has been increasing strongly for some time – the overall investment in land transport continues to grow and is focused on delivering local and national transport network solutions that enable economic growth and productivity, provide value for money and support safer journeys,” the statement read. However Selwyn District Council asset delivery manager Murray Washington said while the funding increase was welcomed, it was less than what was required to match inflation, let alone growth. “This is common to all road controlling authorities, and this council like others will be looking at efficiency gains to undertake our roading operations without a discernible drop in level of service. “Selwyn District is the fastest-growing district in the country so with the attendant growth in traffic, a 12 percent increase request, i.e. 4 percent per annum since 2009, to match growth and rising costs - fuel, labour, etc - was not unrealistic.” Mr Washington said NZTA’s financial assistance rate to the council for road maintenance and renewal had fallen from 48 percent to 47 percent. “Note a one percent drop in the financial assistance rate has transferred $84,000 of costs to Selwyn ratepayers before any consideration of actual roading budget needs.” Tom Doudney The price is right: 12-year-old Cameron Jenkins, right, and his mates, Shayne Jenkins, 12, centre and Jake Faulkner, 12, took the opportunity to put their unwanted toys and games up for sale at the Kidsfest Selwyn Kids Market on Tuesday. THE New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has defended itself against concerns over its level of future road maintenance funding, saying it has increased funding to the Selwyn district more than in most other parts of the country.

The statement comes after Selwyn View reported Malvern councillor John Morten’s concerns that the recommendations of a Government-appointed Road Safety Task Force might lead to not enough funding being provided to maintain the standard of some of the district’s roads.

from the previous three years.

Lincoln professor looks backLINCOLN University professor of resource economics Ross Cullen has been on an amazing journey during his 21 years on staff.

Combining his passion for resource economics and climbing with a touch of research has allowed him to scale the academic ladder at the university and scale mountains around the world.

However, after a long association with the university, first as a student in the late 1960s, then as a professor, Prof. Cullen has hung up his “academic boots” and moved to Norway to be with his wife.

Prof. Cullen recalls his time at Lincoln University with fondness. In 1968 he enrolled for a Diploma of Agriculture and Valuation and

Farm Management courses.“In those times we were expected to wear walk socks and shorts.

One student tried wearing jandals on campus but Malcolm Burns (the principal of Lincoln at the time) noticed and was reported to be unhappy about such casual attire,” Prof. Cullen said.

After spending a few years on the family farm in Otago, decided farming wasn’t for him and went on to complete an honours degree in economics and a PhD on the pharmaceutical industry at Otago University. He continued on as a lecturer at Otago University until 1991. That year, Prof. Cullen started working at Lincoln University.

It was the perfect place to balance his love for the outdoors with his research and teaching career, he said.

During his time at the university, he authored and co-authored more than 100 research publications, 120 conference papers and wrote a guide book on climbs in the Lake Ohau region.

“I tried never saying ‘no’ to a research invitation, particularly around multi-disciplinary research. Modern research is teamwork with the major research grants going to teams,” Prof. Cullen said.

One of his most successful collaborations has been the highly regarded research project ‘Public Perceptions of New Zealand’s Environment’ with Professor Ken Hughey and Associate Professor Geoff Kerr, also from Lincoln University.

The project commenced in 2000 and six biennial surveys have been completed to date.

Heritage Park makes progress

All coming together: John Winchester at the site of the future Ellesmere Heritage Park with his own 1930 Ford Model A Coupe which may be temporarily displayed at the park. Photo: Tom Doudney

PLANS for an Ellesmere Heritage Park are well underway with the lease agreement with the Selwyn District Council for a piece of land expected to be finalised this month.

Ellesmere Heritage Park Trust steering committee chairman John Winchester said the heritage park was a big project and “it’s not going to happen overnight”.

“We’ve got a shed and we have to put a security system and lighting in place. It will probably take at least three months setting up plans because we don’t want to make mistakes,” he said.

The trust members would spend some time looking at how other museums were set up and planned to visit museums in Geraldine, Timaru, Oamaru, Ferrymead Historic Park, Canterbury Museum and Te Papa.

“There’s a lot of offers of help [from other museums] to help us set it up and do it right.”

The 1.4 hectare Selwyn District Council-owned land will have two open sheds and a large shed which will be used for the main features.

“The long term plan would probably be to move some old buildings, like old houses, [to the heritage park] and have a little street, kind of like Ferrymead [Historic Park], but it won’t be as big as Ferrymead,” Mr Winchester said.

The project has been well received by the public.

“We’re getting a lot of phone calls offering us help to raise money.

“We were given two very old plows from the Plowing Association and some old mowers and a rake. There’s been a lot of books donated to us for the library and old machinery and drills from the Historic Society. We’ve got a number

of old clothes the settlers wore, wash basins and all these little trinkets have been collected. There’s a lot of stuff on offer, which is really good,” Mr Winchester said.

The trust intends on having a public open day at the site late August or early September for people to see what the project is about and offer ideas as to what they would like to see at the park.

After the open day, the trust will hold a public meeting to organise volunteers and establish working committees, he said.

The cost of the project is unknown, but a local Selwyn resident has donated about 300 square-metre bales which will be sold for $40 each with funds going toward the heritage park.

All going well, the heritage park should open sometime next year.

Strong interest for national earthquake drillMORE than 250,000 people are now registered to take part in New Zealand’s biggest ever earthquake drill.

Civil Defence hope to have one million people participate in the New Zealand ShakeOut exercise at 9.26am on September 26.

Civil Defence emergency management director John Hamilton said they were well on the way to reaching the one million target.

“Along with many individuals and families, it is great to see companies registering and taking the opportunity to look at their corporate emergency preparedness,” he said.

“Everyone is welcome – individuals, families, and organisations, big, medium and small – and they are needed if we are going to have one million people involved.”

To sign up go to www.getthru.govt.nz.Spread the word (share with friends, family and workmates via word of mouth, Facebook, Twitter, email and other methods).Do the drop, cover and hold drill at 9.26 on 26.9.

Australian students get a taste of LincolnFIVE Australian students have won a trip to check out Lincoln University to see if they want to study there.

The university runs an annual ‘Land the Trip’ competition to provide secondary students from key Australian schools the chance to experience Lincoln University firsthand.

Students in the targeted schools are asked to write 500 words about why they should be chosen to visit the specialist university.

This year, three boys and two girls from schools in Tasmania, Melbourne, Adelaide and Hamilton (Victoria) have been selected to travel to New Zealand. They will be hosted by the Lincoln University staff and current Future Leaders scholars.

Another aim of the programme, besides giving students a taste of what it’s like to study at Lincoln, is to establish new student ambassadors within the key schools and attract top class students to the university.

The students – Dianna Branson, Jackson Koster, James Campkin-Smith, Alec Ross and Sally Terry - arrived in Christchurch on Sunday and have been hosted on campus in student accommodation in the New Zealand Cricket pavilion.

Josh Bashford BioBorn in 1989, of Pakeha and Samoan decent, Little River local Joshua Bashford is a keen artist and sportsman. He gained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Canterbury in 2011, and is currently enrolled in postgraduate study. In 2008 he was awarded a College of Arts Pacific Scholarship to study Fine Arts and as a consequence of his achievements to date, Bashford has recently been awarded a College of Arts Pacific Honours Scholarship to pursue his formal art training further. It was during Fatu Feu’u recent stint as the Artist in Residence at the Macmillian Brown Centre for Pacific Studies that Feu’u has become a good friend and mentor to Bashford hence the title of the show, Island Brothers.

“My work explores mark making and its ability to portray themes such as faith, family and landscape. Printmaking techniques such as lithography and woodcut allow me to express myself through these marks. I work from a variety of sources including family photographs, internet images and pictures found in art books and magazines. These images are then taken and manipulated resulting in abstracted imagery which emerges and disappears into the canvas creating a pushing and pulling of symbols, figures and faces.

These recent works have been made in a much more meditative way than earlier works

An exhibition by Josh Bashford & Fatu Feu’u

of mine. They are heavily inspired by the landscape that I pass through on the drive to and from Little River and Christchurch. As I round the many bends in the road I am often in awe of the changes of light and movement especially around the waters of lakes Forsyth and Ellesmere. I have grown up by these lakes, fishing in the local river and I have spent hours waiting, watching, miles away in thought”

Fatu Feu’u BioBorn in Samoa in 1946, Fatu Feu’u settled in New Zealand in 1966. A senior contemporary artist, Feu’u is an adept painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer and poet. He is also considered as both a leader and mentor within the Pacific arts community in New Zealand, Feu’u is the only Pacific Island artist to receive an ONZM for his services to Pacific art in New Zealand.

Feu’u has exhibited regularly both nationally and internationally. His work is held in major collections such as the National Gallery, Brisbane: Auckland City Art Gallery; Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington; and Waikato Museum of Art and History, Hamilton.

Island Brothers runs from 14 July to 8 August 2012 at the Little River Gallery.

Technology v peopleLAST week I had the need to ring a major nationwide company. Very easy really, there’s a 0800 number and I was wise enough to have my required numbers on hand.

The call was answered by a machine that asked me what I wanted to know.

I have no idea how you feel talking to a machine, especially when you are in the proximity of a lot of other people, but I felt a total idiot.

A series of questions from the machine followed with simple yes or no answers required.

Once I had established what department I wanted, or needed to be put through to, the machine wanted to ensure it was me talking!

So then the whole newsroom found out my date of birth, my address and other information as the machine shuffled me into some sort of cubby hole.

Then came more embarrassment. The damn machine wanted to register me on

its voice identification system, so I had to state, in my normal voice, my registration number three times. That was followed by me stating my date of birth three times and then, with by now the total newsroom concentrating on what I was doing, I was subjected to stating my cellphone number three times.

Having done that, the machine informed me that I now had voice identification registration with the company.

At that point I was at the point of total

frustration, let alone the embarrassment of openly talking to a machine that required so much information - and got it.

Thankfully, the machine then, after just under five minutes, put me through to a human being.

Better still the human being was in New Zealand and spoke with a local accent.

Within moments the query had been sorted out and all was well in my world.

As I hung up I blessed the fact that I had rung an 0800 number so it wasn’t me paying for the call, and felt further blessed that I am old enough to remember that when you rang someone, they answered.

Just how clever are we getting when we compare talking and listening machines with the old “party lines” that worked as an

alert system if there was a fire on a property and the whole neighbourhood was mobilised within minutes, or the personal exchange who could tell a caller that the people you were ringing were not home for a couple of days.

Actually, when one thinks about it, those telephone exchange operators had their own voice ID methods that were run by their ears, rather than the complexity of a computer. Makes you wonder where we will go next technology-wise, doesn’t it?

More to the point, it gets you thinking whether it is a forward or a backward step.

Teddy bear story time a hit

LINCOLN Library filled recently with about 30 toddlers and assorted grown-ups, teddy bears and torches for their first Twilight Storytime.Pyjama-wearing staff read teddy-bear themed stories to the excited young library patrons who also took part in a library bear hunt and tucked into popcorn and chocolate teddy cars.

The event was the brainchild of Outreach Librarian Jackie Claridge and library assistant

Janine Ramsay. It was the first time an event like this had been run at Lincoln as the tiny library has constraints on space. A new, much larger library is due to be built in Lincoln in 2013.

Due to its success, story time is likely to be run again at other Selwyn libraries. The Lincoln Library team is also thinking of running a Christmas Storytime, and possibly a Spooky Storytime event in October.

Clean up the formatting in a Word documentHave you ever tried to copy and paste text from a colleague’s document into your own Word document with the result that the formatting of the pasted text changes beyond recognition? If so, these tips are for you!

Strip the text of its existing formattingBefore bringing someone else’s text into

your document, it is a good idea to paste the text in a new blank document and strip it of the formatting that the other user has applied.

There are two shortcut keys that can help you with this: Ctrl+Spacebar and Ctrl+Q.

Ctrl+Spacebar removes any character

formats (bold, italics, superscript, font, font size and so on).

Ctrl+Q removes any paragraph formats (bullets, numbering, indents, tab stops, alignment and so on).

Use the Format Painter to apply your formats

After the text has been stripped of its formatting, copy and paste it into your document. Then, use the Format Painter (it’s in the Clipboard group on the Home tab) to copy the formats in your document to the new text.

Select the text with the formats to be copied,

click Format Painter and then click the text to be formatted.

To paste the formats several times, double click Format Painter.

Fun, friendship and camping with Lincoln Girl Guides

Challenges overcome: Lincoln girl guides conquering the high ropes course at Wainui YMCA camp.

Faye Musson

FUN and friendship, drama and camping, knitting and climbing ropes, planting gardens and community service - we do it all. Fifty girls are enjoying the challenges and fun of being Girl Guides and Brownies at Lincoln.

They are led by a wonderful team of enthusiastic leaders with plenty of experience in the outdoors. Ask a Brownie or Guide what she likes best and for the majority it is camping, having fun and making new friends.

The Guides programmes help the girls learn outdoor and camping skills, and before they go to high school they are trained enough to cook meals and run their own camps. We like to take the girls to new places for their camping - no comforts of home and plenty of exciting activities to challenge them. The best was the high ropes course at Wainui YMCA camp and at Adrenaline Forest. A local sailing and kayaking instructor is training them on the L2 River ready for doing sea kayaking and sailing at Purau next summer.

Every winter during the July school holidays, we run an indoor survival camp to practice outdoor cooking on gas cookers or a fire. At Motukarara we biked some of the Rail Trail. This week at Yaldhurst we have the Senior Guides in a warm pool learning lifesaving techniques. This camp will have the girls watching the stars through the Observatory

telescopes and hoping to see the rings of Saturn in a clear night sky. Every Guide camp is not complete without the favourite campfire and some good, wholesome food to cook.

Our Brownies on Monday and Wednesday nights are making pirate ships for their pirate theme and lots of dressing up. The winter nights are good for spotlight games and summer is great for exploring around Lincoln. They love to make hokey pokey, try some volcanoes or science experiments, make things with plenty of glitter and show their abilities on the stage.

Two Lincoln leaders are training to run the Cracroft Guide Centre’s abseiling tower so the Brownies and Guides will no doubt be trying abseiling soon.

Our latest Guiding Project ‘Guides can help save the kiwis’ is encouraging the girls to learn more about the kiwi and we are visiting Willowbank for a hands-on activity.

The girls have been involved in making a new lawn and native garden at our local meeting hall, planting pansies and succulents to give some lovely colour to their play area. With the help of parents and Trefoil members our Guides have been making peggy squares for a blanket that they will donate to a girl in eastern Christchurch.

Faye Musson is guide leader with the Lincoln Girl Guides.

Well received: Members of the Christchurch England Sister Cities Committee with Alastair Wood, second from left, from St John Ellesmere at the handover at Leeston.

Ellesmere St John says ‘thanks’Alastair WoodTHE Ellesmere Division of the Order of St John would like to thank the Sister Cities’ Organisation very much for their generosity in the provision of finance for a good quality mobile marquee.

In the spirit of sister cities, citizens from our smallest and oldest sister city, Christchurch in Dorset, England, ran a charity auction to raise money for earthquake relief here in our Christchurch. The money was sent to our sister cities committee to distribute to worthy recipients. As well as a special chair for Bev Edwards, who was badly injured in the February earthquake, the balance of the money was given to St John for the purchase of the marquee.

The February 2011 earthquake did not affect Ellesmere St John directly in terms of damage to or loss of property, but it did have an effect on many of the members. Within two hours of the earthquake, and when direct communications were resumed, both our ambulances were called into Christchurch to assist with treating and transporting patients. Around two o’clock in the morning our main ambulance was sent back to Leeston to provide the necessary cover for the local district, but for the next several days our second ambulance and a number of volunteers were

based in Christchurch, continuing to provide assistance.

The Ellesmere St John Ambulance division is composed totally of volunteers; there are no paid staff at all. Through the goodwill of those volunteers, we keep an ambulance staffed and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We also attend a large number of events in the local area and it is at these events that the marquee will be invaluable.

It will enable us to have a visible base for the treatment of and caring for patients, as well as having an ambulance on standby for any necessary transport.

The earthquake proved to us how valuable a tent/marquee would have been - something that could be erected quickly by members and provide shelter for the injured during their assessment and treatment. And now we have one!

Our grateful thanks once again for your generosity and your thoughts for the people of Canterbury. Your kindness will make a big difference for those who need our services in our community and will also provide us with an ideal mobile base for any future emergencies should they arise.

Alastair Wood writes on behalf of Ellesmere St John.

AT the Annual Changing of Officers function for the Rolleston and District Lions Club two members were presented with the highest honour a club can bestow – Life Membership.

It is an honour not given lightly and recognises the valuable contributions Brian Whittington and Lex Cockburn have given to the club. They are the only remaining charter members and joined at the inception of the club 36 years ago.

Brian and Lex are both past presidents, with Brian also serving as secretary and on Cabinet - the governing body of our Lions Region 202E.

Besides their official positions in the club they have been very active in a variety of fundraising activities, which have enabled the club to donate funds towards the Rolleston Community Centre, drinking fountains at Weedons Park and Rolleston Youth Park, assist youth of the area attend their chosen international/national sports competitions, Outward Bound courses and provide special equipment for disabled youngsters and firewood to needy families - to name but a few

of the activities the club undertakes.Lisa Larmers won the Canterbury

Speechmaker contest and entertained the members at the function with a rendition of her winning speech. She will now move onto the National competition and we wish her the very best.

Our club is presently conducting a new member recruitment campaign and invites interested persons to contact James 347-6516 or Christine 347-4767 to obtain more information on the club.

Behind the Hedges: A tour of West Melton energy efficient homesIngrid McGeachen

AFTER a successful field trip in April to a local area of significant interest, the West Melton Enviro Community are now planning for our next event - a tour of energy efficient homes around our district. This will be held on Sunday, September 9, from 12.30 until 5pm.

Many people are now considering utilising more energy efficient materials when building or renovating their homes and the options for this is ever increasing.

West Melton Enviro Community have recognised this, which has prompted the organisation of a tour of local homes demonstrating a variety of energy efficient home options.

The tour will give you an insight from the

homeowner’s perspective without the sales pitch! You will have the opportunity to listen to the firsthand experience of homeowners who have installed photovoltaic panels, solar hot water systems and built with energy efficient building materials.

The cost of this event will be $15 per adult and $7.50 for children aged five to 14.

Spaces are limited and places are filling fast. You can register your interest for this event by e-mailing Ingrid at [email protected].

For further details, please check our website: www.westmeltonenviro.org.nz.

Ingrid McGeachen is secretary of the West Melton Enviro Community.

EQC Update

0800 DAMAGE (0800 326 243)OR VISIT US AT WWW.EQC.GOVT.NZ

By the beginning of July, EQC and Fletcher EQR have repaired in excess of 17,500 Christchurch and Canterbury homes – more than the total number of homes in Timaru – with damage ranging from minor to severe.

EQC repairs and payouts to the beginning of July amounted to $3.2 billion.

Progress ReportSteady response

The Earthquake Commission’s winter heating advertisements and posters (above) are prompting about ten concerned neighbours, family or friends a day to call 0800 DAMAGE to suggest the names of people who they think are suffering the cold after losing their main source of heating.

The campaign follows on from a highly successful drive last winter by EQC and Fletcher EQR to alert Canterbury people to the opportunity for a heat pump or solid fuel burner to replace the main source of heating lost during the earthquakes. The 2011 campaign led to the installation of 9374 heat pumps and 6434 solid fuel burners.

Keeping you

informed

Next month, EQC is introducing an independent mediation service to give customers a chance to have any disputes resolved through a mediator who has no predetermined view. The service is running in conjunction with the Arbitrators’ and Mediators’ Institute of New Zealand.

If you feel you need to access this free mediation service for your claim, please visit the EQC website at Canterbury.eqc.govt.nz. Questions relating to apportionment of claims will not be covered by mediation.

There may still be people in our community who don’t have adequate heat to keep them warm and we need your help to find them.

If you, or someone you know is suffering the cold after losing their main source of heating in the earthquakes, please call us today on 0800 DAMAGE (0800 326 243).

Recommendations for stock management We recommend everyone who manages stock should ensure they are kept out of natural waterways.

Methods to reduce stock access to natural waterways include:

• New permanent fences • The use of temporary fences • New bridges or culverts for stock to cross waterways• Avoid planting winter feed crops in paddocks with natural

waterways.

The rules are:Livestock access to natural waterways is only allowed if there are no significant adverse effects, these include:

• Heavy pugging in rivers, lakes, or wetlands • Visible discolouration of water • An increase in bacteria levels• Any obvious evidence of faecal matter in waterways.

All intensively farmed stock are completely prohibited from entering natural waterways.

This includes farmed pigs, dairy cattle, any stock grazed on irrigated land, and any stock grazing on winter crops adjacent to a natural waterbody or wetland.

In addition cattle, farmed deer or pigs will be prohibited from entering waterways:

• Within 1km of a river bathing site • Within 1km upstream from a community drinking water

supply• At a salmon or inanga (whitebait) spawning site • In a permanently flowing reach of specified

low-land rivers.

Failure to comply with the new rules for stock access to natural waterways is likely to result in enforcement action, such as an abatement or infringement notice, or could even result in prosecution.

Riparian planting absorbs nutrient runoff helping to protect water quality.

Fencing, even if only temporary, is the simplest way to restrict stock access to natural waterways.

Rockys Pizzas has 22 different varieties of pizza, all distinctively named after characters in the Rocky movies and with names like The Rocky, Stallone, Sylvester, Eye of the Tiger, it’s clear where the inspiration came from.

Among the range are traditional pizzas such as Hawaiian and meat lovers while Rockys’special gourmet pizzas are all named in the movie themes. There are also 15 different types of pasta for those who prefer their carbohydrate in that style. There are also gluten-free options.

Ross Baldwin (nicknamed Rocky) is a huge fan of Sylvester Stallone and the Rocky character. As well as the pizza titles reflecting that, he has decorated the waiting room with Rocky character posters and statues and tigers. It’s definitely a pizza place with a difference. There’s also black furniture in the waiting area – sofas in particular.

Owner Ross has some solid advice for local pizza and pasta lovers from kids to students to family people of all ages: “come and have a look and a taste at our amazing venue”.

He’s convinced those who sample Rockys pizzas will like what they taste. He’s been told “they’re the best pizzas around”.

Pizza bases and sauces are made by Ross, with his pizza cook Brent Jones preparing the final product.

to Sunday from 9am in the morning to 8pm or 9pm at night.

It’s also well known for its lunch bar, with food from sandwiches to pies and sweet items and is open seven days.

Beat the winter bluesAs many of us sniffle and cough our way

through another winter, University of Sydney Professor Robert Booy,

from the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance at Sydney Medical School, has some advice about colds and flu:

It is not just people’s perceptions that this year has been particularly bad for colds and flu. It has been the busiest year for hospital admissions, including in intensive care, for complications from flu infections for the last three years.

It is difficult to know exactly why it is worse this year. Every year we chase the virus as it continues to mutate and we try to adapt, reviewing what is in the flu vaccine each year in order to keep up with changes in the virus. To prevent getting sick there are several straightforward measures you can take:• Don’t shake hands – a smile will do!• Wash your hands regularly including after

blowing your nose.• If you have a minor sniffle it is OK to

soldier on at work but if you have major symptoms then go home and save your colleagues from possible infection.

• If you sneeze, use a tissue and throw it away. If you are caught without a tissue or hankie then sneeze into the crook of your elbow.Once you are sick with a suspected cold

then rest and fluids are the best treatment. There are at least a dozen viruses which cause colds and they are not treatable with an antibiotic.

If you suspect you have the flu, because, for example, a colleague was diagnosed by a GP, there is a specific antiviral treatment that can be provided by your GP. It is effective if you take it within the first couple of days of symptoms. Some symptoms of flu are sore muscles, headache, high fever and a very sore throat.

If your symptoms worsen with, for example, shortness of breath, chest pain

or yellow or green mucus then you may be getting pneumonia. You should see a GP as your viral infection might have become complicated with a bacterial infection which is treatable with an antibiotic.

Pneumonia is an infection of the smaller airways while bronchitis is an infection of the larger airways.

Regarding the flu vaccine, even if you don’t fall into the risk groups it is valuable to have a flu vaccine because you help form a ‘chain of protection’ around those who are vulnerable.

At-risk groups for pneumonia and flu are people 65 or over and younger people with chronic medical conditions such as emphysema, kidney disease, diabetes and cancer.

For flu, pregnant women are also in the at-risk group and can get the flu vaccine for free.

Fighting back:Spread the word about these flu prevention measures but don’t spread the virus.

available.”“As an artist and ex-florist , this is what I do best.” Jan is really passionate about her shop “it’s just progressing and expanding more and more as time goes by, to the point where I had to expand my premises”.One thing Jan prides herself on is being able to provide her customers, from all over New Zealand, with “good old fashioned, friendly, one-on-one service”.Come and visit the very beautiful craft shop in a tranquil garden setting. Add style and character to your environment

Pavers Direct, located at The Old Sawmill on Main South Road, between Rolleston and Burnham, produces pavers in a range of colours and sizes, suitable for

pathways, barbecue areas, pool surrounds and garden edges and sells them direct to the public, which makes them very cost-effective.

The business is run by Peter and Lisa Ford, who took over in 2006.

Whether you are landscaping a new property or wanting to introduce a fresh, exciting look to your existing outdoor area, concrete pavers are a good choice to add style and character to your environment. Easily accessible at 2239 Main South Road, Pavers Direct has plenty of parking for vehicles and trailers. They have had many customers from southern parts such as Ashburton, Timaru, Queenstown and Dunedin.

Customers are welcome to leave their trailers there while they drive into town and then pick them up with their new pavers on the way home. Much of Pavers Direct’s business comes through word of mouth and repeat business.

Peter is a builder by trade and knows about concrete and its uses in the home (and commercial) environment and drawing on that knowledge and experience, manufactures pavers that are strong and durable and offer long-term performance.

In fact, they have been strength tested by Ag Research. The pavers come in five attractive colours, with the most popular ones being charcoal, sandy and terracotta, as well as plain concrete and textured aggregate. By combining colours and textures or alternatively using just one colour or style from the selection, you

can create unique and innovative outdoor areas that will enhance the character and value of your property. There is usually a good supply of the stock colours available; for specific orders, or if the colour you want is temporarily out of stock, the waiting time is one and a half weeks. Pavers Direct has recently started making a new and popular product, garden edging – 80mm x 300mm x 50mm. Custom items such as outdoor table tops and fence capping can also be made.

The pavers come in five sizes, with the most practical and popular being the 500mm x 500mm. They are available in 40mm and 50mm thicknesses, with the choice depending on where the pavers are to be laid. On a driveway, for example, the 50mm is needed to carry the weight of vehicles.

They are open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm during the warmer weather.

For more information, phone 347 6685, mobile 021 138 2341, email [email protected] or check the website www.pavers.yolasite.com.

Looking good: Maximse your outdoor space with pavers.
