PERSPECTIVES* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

All living things rely on air, water, soil, trees, mountains and natural resources fortheir living. So, it is obligatory for all peopleto conserve the environment for survival.

However, the whole world is seeing evilconsequences of climate change such asstrong winds, floods, drought, heat waves, and melting of massive ice layers.

According to experts, 90 per cent ofglobal warming is caused by man’s activities.Land and water pollution stems fromexcessive exploitation of natural resourcesand disposing of hazard wastes. Carbondioxide, gases, ashes and bad smells emittedby factories, plants and vehicles pollute air.

Therefore, many countries have to placegreater emphasis on environmentalconservation. Myanmar has preserved finetraditions of conserving the environment forlong. It systematically maintains waters, lands, forests and natural resources. Thenation has established many forest reservesand sanctuaries.

The Ministry of Forestry in cooperationwith local people has been setting up firewoodplantations for villages, watershed forests, and teak plantations. The plantations of teak, ironwood, gem-kino and pinma are successfulin Bago Yoma. So far, more than 500,000neem trees have been nurtured in the specialneem plantations designed for greeningShwebondaung in Magway Division.

As forests and woodlands help improveclimate patterns, we have to avoiddeforestation and improve the ecosystem. So, the government and local people have toset up new plantations and conservewoodlands for better environment.

Vietnam scraps $56B bullettrain project over cost

HANOI, 21 June—Vietnamese legislators rejecteda proposed bullet train over its $56 billion cost —the assembly’s first rejection of a major proposalsubmitted by the all-powerful Communistgovernment.

The nearly 500-member assembly typicallyacts as a rubber stamp but voted over the weekendto deny plans for the high-speed rail project.

The $56 billion investment would have built a975-mile (1,570-kilometer) track linking the capitalHanoi and the southern commercial hub of Ho ChiMinh City by 2035.

A train trip that now takes 30 hours would havebeen cut to about six hours.

But ordinary Vietnamese could not afford thefares, and construction would equal about 50 percentof the country’s gross domestic product, saidNguyen Minh Thuyet, a lawmaker from northernLang Son Province.

Why summer begins MondayLONDON, 21 June—The pools have opened and

kids are out for summer break, but in an astronomicalsense summer begins Monday, which is officiallysummer solstice for the Northern Hemisphere.

The relative positions of sun and Earth deem itso. Here’s what’s behind that timing.

Earth is tilted on its axis 23.5 degrees, so it leansone way as it spins around its axis while orbiting thesun. On 21 June this year (some years it’s 20 June),the North Pole is pointing toward the sun as muchas is possible. (Winter solstice occurs when the tophalf of our planet, everything north of the equator, faces directly away from the sun, leaving the NorthPole in complete darkness.)

The sun will be as high in the sky as it can goat 7:28 am EDT (11:45 UTC) and will stay in thesky for a fraction of a second longer than the dayprior or the day after.

Since Monday marks the sun’s peak, you mightwonder why 21 June doesn’t typically marksummer’s peak heat. The reason has to do with theslow pace at which oceans heat up and cool down.By mid-June the oceans of the Northern Hemisphereare still cool from winter’s chill, delaying the peakair temperatures by a month and a half, accordingto NASA.

Earth is actually farther away from the sunduring the summer than it is during the wintermonths, because our planet’s orbit is elliptical, asquished circle of sorts. —Internet

But although thenew studies did use cellstaken from children, theywere performed only intest tubes and expertscalled for caution ininterpreting the findings.

The drug wasapproved in October 2007 for people in the disease’slater stages. Users of Tasigna, however, are at greaterrisk of an abnormal heart rhythm disorder called QTprolongation. The FDA said earlier this year itsanctioned an updated medication guide and otherstrategies to inform patients and doctors of the drug’srisks. People may skip soft drinks ratherthan pay more

BOSTON, 21June—Boosting theprice of regular softdrinks may reduceconsumption and helplower levels of obesityand diabetes in theUnited States, a newstudy suggests.

Researchers exa-mined what happenedduring a time periodwhen the cafeteria at

Brigham and Women’sHospital in Bostonincreased the price ofregular soft drinks by 35percent, compared witha time period when thehospital launched aneducational campaign. The investigators alsolooked at a comparisonsite — a nearby hospital— that did not implementeither intervention.

Soft drink salesdecreased 26 percentwhen the price wasincreased, but theeducational campaignon its own did not affectsales. When the priceincrease and educational

campaign werecombined, sales fell anadditional 18 percent, the study authors found.

“Policymakers andpublic health advocateshave proposed thetaxation of regular softdrinks as a means toreduce the consumptionof these products andraise revenue for publichealth purposes. Ourresults may have impli-cations for theseproposed policies,” DrJason Block, of HarvardMedical School, andcolleagues wrote.

CHICAGO, 21 June—Fast decisions on life-and-death cases are thebread and butter ofhospital emergencyrooms. Nowhere dodoctors face greaterpressures to overtest andovertreat.

The fear of missingsomething weighs hea-vily on every doctor’smind. But the stakes arehighest in the ER, andthat fear often leads toextra blood tests andimaging scans for whatmay be harmless chestpains, run-of-the-millhead bumps, and non-threatening stom-

achaches.Many ER doctors

say the No. 1 reason isfear of malpracticelawsuits. “It has everyt-hing to do with it,” saidDr Angela Gardner, president of the Amer-ican College of Em-ergency Physicians.

The fast ER paceplays a role, too: It’smuch quicker to order atest than to ask a patientlots of questions to makesure that test is reallyneeded.

“It takes time toexplain pros and cons.Doctors like to check abox that orders a CT scan

and go on to the nextpatient,” said Dr JeffreyKline, an emergencyphysician at CarolinasMedical Centre inCharlotte, NC.

Patients’ demandsdrive overtesting, too. Many think every acheand pain deserves a high-tech test. “Our societyputs more weight ontechnology than onphysical exams,” Gar-dner said. “In otherwords, why would youbelieve a doctor whoonly examines you whenyou can get an X-raythat can tell somethingfor sure?”—Internet

Africa are going to play in their group-A’s last match in South Africa on 22 June. Both teams faced one time in their head-to-head position in the previous friendly

match of 2010 and were held to a goaless draw. France played two matches inthe group and had one draw against Uruguay and one loss to Mexico while thehosts played two matches in the group and one draw against Mexico and oneloss to Uruguay. Both teams are less likely to reach the play-off stage. In addition, the results of both teams are the same with one point each. Even if one of two winthe match, it is likely to be out of the group on goal difference. If Mexico andUruguay played a draw, France and the hosts would be hopeless for going to theplay-off stage. It is supposed that South Africa will play for a win against France.

Both teams are more likely to play a draw. If so, the hosts and Francewill be surely out of the group round. It will be the best if both teams avoidArgentina.Anyhow, it is forecast that Mexico and urugyay are likely to finishin a draw. If like Mexico, it is the best.
