NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, 2011 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION From those who trace their roots to America's earliest days to those who recently came to the United States carrying nothing but hope for a better life, Hispanics have always been integral to our national story. As an American family more than 300 million strong, we constitute one people, sharing sacrifice and prosperity because we know we rise and fall together. America is a richer and more vibrant country because of the contributions of Hispanics, and during National Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the immeasurable impact they have made on our Nation. Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community. They are doctors and lawyers, activists and educators, entrepreneurs and public servants, and brave service members who defend our way of life at home and abroad. NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, 2011

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

From those who trace their roots to America's earliest days to those who recently came to the United States carrying nothing but hope for a better life, Hispanics

have always been integral to our national story. As an American family more than 300 million strong, we

constitute one people, sharing sacrifice and prosperity because we know we rise and fall together. America is a richer and more vibrant country because of the contributions of Hispanics, and during National

Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the immeasurable impact they have made on our Nation.

Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and

shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community. They are doctors and lawyers, activists and educators, entrepreneurs and public servants, and

brave service members who defend our way of life at home

and abroad.

Eagle Band Soars

.

EAGLE BAND MEMBERS SOAR!

Three Eagle Band members competed on September 17 in the Region Jazz

Band auditions held in Boerne : Matt DelVecchio on piano, Alex Reidel on

drum set and Evan Reidel on bass guitar. Matt earned first chair at the

auditions, which advanced him to the area round, and he will get to

participate in a clinic and concert that will be held on November 5.

This is the first time Lackland has ever had students enter (or place) in

this contest and we are VERY proud of Matt for his accomplishment!

Lackland ISD Fall Festival

Join us next month for Lackland’s Fall Festival on Friday October 14th from 4-7p.m. on the

Students in the 6th grade science classes of Ms. Nelms and Mrs. Torre learn that math

and science are interrelated disciplines, along with social studies and English language arts

(ELA). Students spent the last week learning how to calculate density, mass, and volume

of regular and irregular-shaped objects. The Metric System is the language of Science

and students worked with those conversion skills. Social Studies comes into play as

students learned about Archimedes, a famous mathematician and scientist (b. 298 BC-d.

212 BC). Reading about culture and society during the time of Archimedes increased

student awareness of life "back in the day".

Archimedes is quoted as exclaiming, "Eureka!!! I have found it" as he

discovered the theory of displacement, still used today to calculate the

density of an irregular object. Sixth grade students share their moment of

"Eureka!" as they work with triple beam balances to calculate the density of

objects, communicating their findings, and calculating their results.

New students to the district and s2s members got to know each other a

little bit more while eating ice cream at the same time! We all hung out and

talked to each other. Everyone pretty much had a tremendous time!!!

Students in Ms. DiGiampaolo’s 4th grade class are exploring perimeter by drawing their own designs and measuring them.

Mrs. Bragg’s 5th grade class is getting lots of practice multiplying numbers with the standard algorithm.
