LISD Schools Recognized During Board Meeting

Lackland Elementary, Stacey Jr/Sr High School, and Lackland

Independent School District were awarded accountability plaques

during the district’s September Board Meeting. Lackland Elementary

which has been rated Exemplary for the seventh consecutive year

was awarded another Exemplary Plaque by the Lackland ISD Board of

Trustees. Mrs. Terry Leija, principal of Lackland Elementary received

the plaque from the Board on behalf of her school. Mrs. Gail Horn,

principal of Stacey Jr/Sr High School received a “Recognized” plaque

on behalf of her school. Dr. Burnie Roper, Superintendent of

Lackland ISD was presented a “Recognized” plaque for the district’s

overall performance. Board President, Mr. Brian Miller expressed his

appreciation to our principals, teachers, and students for all of their

hard work.

Student Book Checkout Information

If a student at Lackland ISD loves to read, he or she can be a frequent visitor to

the Lackland ISD Library Media Center!

Lackland Elementary students visit the Media Center with their classes each

week. Stacey Junior-Senior High students have an opportunity to come weekly

with their learning lab class; they can also come on their own before or after

school or during the day.

All students are welcome during the school day on a pass. The Media Center

opens at 7:15 Monday – Friday and closes at 4:00 except on Fridays at 3:30.

Elementary closes for lunch from 11:20 to 11:50.

Elementary students generally follow grade guidelines for number of books

they may check out. Check with your student’s teacher or a librarian for more

information. We want to teach accountability for books – but our goal is to

encourage reading and provide rich, engaging materials for all.

With hundreds of books checked out daily, the Media Center staff has learned

that Lackland ISD students certainly love to read!

Students meet WWII Tuskegee Airman, honor America's heroes

For 24 hours straight, beginning at 8 a.m. on Sept 15, Lackland AFB and Basic Military Training took part in remembering and honoring our POWs/MIAs -- those who served with honor and gave

their lives in service to our Country. In each squadron, a baton was carried around the track, never stopping, carried by military members, civilians, veterans and family members. Lackland Airmen were also honored to be in the presence of former POWs and men of honor, such as Dr. Granville

C. Coggs, F.A.C.R., one of the original Tuskegee Airmen. He is 86 years old. There are eight living Tuskegee Airmen here in San Antonio.

Between 1943 and 1946, Dr. Coggs served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aerial gunner, aerial

bombardier and pilot for the North American B-25 "Mitchell" bomber during World War II. He went on to later attend Harvard and earn his medical degree in 1953, becoming a career

radiologist. More recently, Dr. Coggs won a gold medal in track at the Senior Olympics in 2010.

The 323rd Training Squadron family, including Garrett Greenwood (5th, Esparza) and his sister

Griffin Greenwood (2nd, Kerr) were honored to hear Dr. Coggs speak the morning of Sept. 16 and run with him and the squadron on the track. Griffin, 7, ran with the trainees for 2 miles! (photo

Paper Recycling Facts Paper is the most common material in our trash. Because of this, in order to

significantly reduce the amount of trash in our landfills, we need to recycle paper.

Below is a list of Paper Recycling Facts.

Around 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away every year in the U.S.

To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut

down.

Every ton of paper recycled saves more than 3.3 cubic yards of landfill

space.

One million tons of recovered paper is enough to fill more than 14,000

railroad cars.

Recycled paper produces 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw

materials.

It takes 24 trees to make 1 ton of newspaper.

An average American uses 465 trees worth of paper during his or her

lifetime.

Recycling half the world's paper would free 20 million acres of forest land.

Paper plus cardboard combined make up 73% of the materials in the landfill.
