From Father Doug The Roman Missal, Part II

. On the weekend of November 26 and 27, the first Sunday of Advent, we will be implementing a new translation to be used in our liturgical celebrations.

The initial pattern of the Mass will not change. The first part of the Mass, the Liturgy of the Word, will not change structurally, but some words will change.

Most of these words reflect a more formal style truer to the literal Latin words from which our current texts have been translated. The main conceptual differences involve efforts to reduce interpretive nuance and use words derived strictly from the Latin text. With the new Missal, the words of the prayers in all languages will be literally much closer. The liturgical words of most other languages are already closer to the literal Latin and are not being retranslated.

The new words reflect an angle of religious perspective that may seem unusual to our time and culture. The revelation and teachings of scripture and Tradition remain unchanged. These “new “ words that we will be learning are actually quite old; the more literally translated prayers often make more sense when viewed in the context of their composition. By having all languages using texts more literally translated from the Latin, many believe there will be greater equiva-lency and unity with literal translation of the Latin words throughout our universal Church.

Cultural adaptations or nuances will remain for the homilist who is charged to “translate” the Gospel into language of validity in its relationship to contemporary and eternal life.

Our first encounter with the new language will be in our response to the priest’s sung or spoken words of greeting. One option, “The Lord be with you,” is a literal translation of “Dominus vobiscum” that remains close to the Latin (as do the other greeting options).

The greetings use the English response from the congregation, “and also with you,” translated from the Latin, “et cum spiritu tuo.” A literal translation would be, “and with your Spirit.” This will be the wording when the new Missal is implemented.

Though we are integrated beings of body and spirit, the renewed emphasis on the Spirit represents a desire for deeper appreciation of the Spirit of God dwelling within us; from our baptism, from our confirmation, from our ordination, but especially the part of our being that will soon be nourished by our Eucharist.

Similarly, the penitential act will be more literal. The most noticeable change will be in the “I confess…” prayer where we magnify our own deliberateness of sinning with the words, “…through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault, therefore I ask…” Sin is deliberate, and these words take us to a stronger emphasis of our sin being our fault. Considering how easy it is to make excuses or to blame, it is hard to argue with the logic of this change.

The Gloria has several wording changes and new melodies will emerge to accommodate the more ornate language that is truer to the Latin. Think of this in the context of writing a letter to a familiar friend vs. writing a letter to the President of the United States. Even if the point is the same, more deferential and respectful language will deliberately used. Considering that we are praising God, the creator of all things, who became one of us and sent us the Holy Spirit, there is a legitimate argument that more respectful and deferential language reflects proper reverence as we offer praise to our God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Instead of saying “Glory to you, Lord” after the Gospel introduction, we will now say “Glory to you, O Lord” adding verbal reverence and focus to the title of Lord.

In the Creed, you will immediately notice the changed words “I believe…” rather than “We believe…” The idea is the same. You will be taking personal ownership of this belief in unison with many others. We are still being true to the idea of “we believe” as we express our belief individually but collectively with “I believe.” Other words will change with the same logic as the Gloria, but like the Gloria, the essence of the expression is unchanged; the English nuances have been altered to maintain a universal commonality to the liturgical prayers originating from the same Latin texts. Words change, but the Eucharist and our worship remain the same, to dispose us and to unify us as we follow Jesus on the path to His Father’s kingdom with the aid of the Holy Spirit. We may become tongue-tied as we learn new words, but we will become accustomed to them as we continue to celebrate our worship together. The next installment will be in a few weeks and will involve what happens after the Creed, the Eucharistic liturgy.

Mass Intentions … Mass intentions may be for the living and the departed, with a + designating in the bulletin a deceased person. There is a $10 suggested donation per Mass intention. Permission from the sick person or his/her family must be granted before a name’s inclusion in these prayers. To schedule a Mass intention, call Jean in the parish office.

Baptism … Sacramental preparation is required for all parents. Godparents and Grandparents are also encouraged to attend. Baptismal prep sessions are given every other month and Baptism Masses are held once a month. Call Jean in the parish office to schedule a child for Baptism and the parents for baptismal prep.

Prayers of the Faithful ….If you would like a name included in our Prayers of the Faithful for the sick, please call the Parish Office.

Penance...Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and anytime by appointment.

Matrimony...pre-registration required one year in advance; marriage preparation course is required.

Anointing… If you wish to receive an anointing please call the parish office.

Communion for the Homebound...When we come together to pray at our Eucharistic liturgy, we do not forget the members of our community who are unable to be with us because of ill health. We remember them in our prayer, and we wish to include them in our Holy Communion. Members of our community bring the Blessed Sacrament to them to comfort them and to unite them with us in the Eucharist. We are not always aware of those who have this need. Please call the Parish Office to let us know if you or a member of your family would like to have Holy Communion brought to them. That way we can schedule a time for our ministers to visit and bring the Sacrament.

Hospital, Nursing Home, Homebound Visits...Churches are no longer notified by hospitals or nursing homes when a parishioner is admitted unless the family has requested it. If you or a family member are homebound, hospitalized or in a nursing home and would like a visit from a member of the pastoral ministry staff, please call Jean Rief in the parish office.

Come and help feed the hungry. Guardian Angels will be serving a meal for Loaves & Fishes at St. Mark’s Catholic

Church in Shakopee on Thursday, September 29th. The first team arrives at St. Mark’s at 2:30 p.m. to prepare the meal. The second team arrives at St. Mark’s at 5:15 p.m. to serve and clean up. Volunteer Needed Giving Tree Ministry

Our Christmas Giving Tree has long been a wonderful way our Parish has given to people in our community during the Christmas season. Patty Glaeser and her son have head this up the last several years but are looking for others to help out. . .. What’s involved? *Contact organizations and get a list of their needs. *Make tags for the tree. *Collect and deliver gifts. *Go shopping for missing gifts. This ministry runs from October to December and is great for a family to do together.

If so...Guardian Angels Faith Formation has two technology needs that you could help with.

*The first is video editing our weekly opening prayer. As you may know our entire Wednesday Evening Program prays together via video. In the years past Eric Crowell has done the editing for this, he has since left GA and is now working at the University of Minnesota. The school technology teacher has offered to train anyone interested in being a part of this much needed ministry!

*Our second need is for the FF portion of the website! We need a face lift, some sprucing up, a little TLC! Once it is updated, we would then need someone to maintain the site.

Guardian Angels School will host a Town Hall on October 6th at 6:30 in St. Francis Hall. This is the first of three Town Hall meeting to be held throughout the school year. The purpose of this first town hall is to notify parents and parishioners of the various committees, activities and opportunities available to get involved with your school. There will be an open forum to discuss the school initiatives for the year and ask questions.

The band program at Guardian Angels school is growing! We need your help! Do you have a band instrument you are no longer using? Is taking up space in your closet or attic? We have a great home for your used instruments!

We need donated instruments in any condition to help our students make a joyful noise.

Por el Padre Doug El Misal Romano , Parte II El fin de semana del 26 y 27 de Noviembre, el primer Domingo de Adviento,vamos a implementer una traduccion nueva que sera utilizada en nuestras celebraciones liturgicas. La parte inicial en la secuencia de la Misa no cambiara. La primera parte de la Misa, la Liturgia de la Palabra, no cambiara estruc-turalmente, pero algunas palabras seran cambiadas. La mayoria de estas palabras reflejan un estilo mas formal y verdadero en las palabras en Latin, de los textos que han sido traduci-dos mas recientemente. Las diferencias mas importantes involucran esfuerzos que reducen el significado de las palabras derivadas estrictamente de los textos del Latin. Con el Misal nuevo, las palabras de las oraciones en todos los idiomas estaran literalmente mas cerca de su pronunciacion.. Las palabras liturgicas en la mayoria de los idiomas se acercan mucho al Latin y no han sido retraduci-das. Las palabras nuevas reflejan un angulo de la perspectiva de la religion, que pareciera inusual en nuestro tiempo y cultura. La reve-lation y enseñanzas de la escritura y su tradicion, continuan sin cambios. Estas palabras “nuevas” que estamos aprendiendo, son real-mente muy viejas; literalmente, las oraciones que mas se han traducido tienen mas sentido cuando se observa su contenido. Teniendo todos estos idiomas usando textos traducidos mas literalmente del Latin, muchos creen que tendran mas equivalencia y unidad con esta traduccion a travez de la Iglesia Universal. Las adaptaciones culturales y cambios continuaran haciendose a travez de quien haga la homilia, encargandose de “traducir” el Evangelio en un idioma que de validez a su relacion con la vida contemporaria y eterna. Nuestro primer encuentro con este nuevo idioma, estara en la respuesta que el sacerdote cante o hable por medio de palabras de bienvenida. Una opcion, “El Señor este con ustedes”, es una traduccion literal de “Dominus vobiscum”, esta continua estando cerca del Latin (como algunas otras opciones de bienvenida). La bienvenida utilizada en la respuesta de la congregacion, “y tambien contigo”, traducido del Latin , “et cum spiritu tuo”. La tra-duccion literal seria “y con tu espiritu”. Esta sera la traduccion valida con los Misales nuevos. Al ser integrados en cuerpo y espiritu, el enfasis de renovacion en el Espiritu, representa el deseo de un profundo agradecimiento al Espiritu de Dios, morando en nosotros; por nuestro Bautismo, por nuestra Confirmacion, por nuestra Ordenacion, pero especialmente la parte de nuestro ser que sera alimentada por la Eucaristia. De manera similar, el acto Penitencial, sera tambien mas literal. El cambio mas importante sera en la oracion del “yo confieso…”, donde aceptamos nuestros pecados con las palabras, “por mi culpa, por mi culpa, por mi grande culpa, por tanto ruego…” El pecado es deliverado, y estas palabras nos llevan a enfatizar fuertemente la culpa de nuestro pecado. Considerando lo facil que es encontrar excusas o culpar, es dificil argumentar en la logica de este cambio. La Gloria tiene muchos cambios que valen la pena y hay muchas melodias nuevas que tambien se acomodan al Latin. Piensa en esto al escribir una carta a un amigo o hacerlo al Presidente de los estados Unidos. Aun cuando el punto sea el mismo, sera utilizado un lenguaje mas respetuoso y diferente entre los dos. Considerando que estamos alabando a Dios, el Creador de todas las cosas, quien se convirtio en uno de nosotros y nos envio su Santo Espiritu, hay un argumento legitimo que involucra mas respeto y un idioma diferente que refleja la apropiada reverencia mientras ofrecemos alabanzas a nuestro Dios: el Padre, Hijo y Espiritu Santo. En lugar de decir, “Gloria a ti Señor”, despues de la introduccion del Evangelio, ahora diremos, “Gloria a ti , oh Señor”, agregando una reverencia que se enfoca en el titulo de Señor” En el Credo, inmediatamente notaras las parabras cambadas “Yo creo” en lugar de “Creemos”, la idea es la misma. Tu estaras diciendo que crees en union de muchos otros. Seguimos con la idea de que “creemos” mientras expresamos nuestra creencia individ-ual, pero colectivamente con “Yo creo”. Otras palabras cambiaran con la misma logica como el Gloria, pero de la misma manera, la expresion no ha sido cambiada; en ingles, los cambios han sido alterados para mantener un acomodo universal en las oraciones litur-gicas de los mismos textos del Latin. Las palabras cambian, pero la Eucaristia y nuestro encuentro con el Señor continua igual. Para disponernos y unirnos a Jesus en su camino al reino de su Padre con la ayuda del Espiritu Santo. Quiza comencemos a trabar nuestras lenguas con las palabras nuevas, pero nos costumbraremos a ellas mientras que continuamos uniendonos en nuestra celebracion. Lo anterior sera instalado en las siguientes semanas y nos involucraremos despues del Credo y en la Liturgia de la Eucaristia.

Losing someone we love is one of life’s most challenging passages. Learning about this process of grief, along with sharing our experience in a caring, supportive, and confidential setting, helps us to cope and leads to personal growth and healing. The Southwest Grief Coalition works ogether to provide support and education for those who are grieving and will begin its six-week fall series, Living and Growing Through Loss. The evening will include a light meal, followed by a speaker, and then small group supportive sessions spe-cific to the type of loss. Participants are welcome to attend any or all of the speaker presentations; small group support sessions are closed to new members after the second week.

There is no cost to participate in Living and Growing Through Loss and no church affiliation is required. A light supper is provided each evening.

Ministry of the Separated and Divorced Fall Speaker Series

First Session, Monday, September 26, 6:30–8:30pm at Our Lady of Grace Church, Edina

The loss of a relationship through separation and divorce poses one of the most difficult transitions a person can face. As people journey through a divorce, they face the stress of emotions, life changes, and developing ways to live a new life. The Coalition of Catholic Churches offers a fall speaker series that addresses some of the issues a person meets during this life transition. The first topic is Reconnecting our Hopes and Dreams: Spirituality and Divorce and will be held on Monday, September 26, from 6:30-8:30pm at Our Lady of Grace Church, 5071 Eden Ave, in Edina. No registration is necessary, and there is no charge. More information about the speaker series and the Divorce and Beyond support group can be found under the Pastoral Care Link at www.GAchaska.org.
