    Fountain Hills, AZ September 2013

    From the Pastor

    Our Vision:

We hear our LORDs commandments -- calling us to be a city on a hill; reflecting light into Fountain Hills and all the worldbeyond, giving glory to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

    calls us to . . .

Our Mission :We respond in faith, hope, and love stretching upward to the One God and reaching outward to all people through worship, education, fellowship and service.

    THE COMMUNIONOF SAINTs. . .

We must always give thanks to God for you,

brothers and sisters, as is right, because

your faith is growing abundantly, and the

love of everyone of you for one another is

increasing. Therefore we ourselves boast ofyou among the churches of God for your

steadfastness and faith during all your per-

secutions and the afflictions that you are

    enduring. (2 Thessalonians 1:3-4)

I am so proud of us!

Let me draw you a picture: When I first arrived here in No-vember of 2010 it seemed we were suffering from a paralysisof uncertainty. Nobody was sure what they could or shoulddo; and so they turned to their new pastor for direction. Thephone rang incessantly and a seemingly-endless parade of

folks passed through my office seeking guidance or permis-sion for a multitude of decisions, both large and small. Formonths I attended virtually every meeting that went onaround here because it seemed my presence was a necessityof communal comfort. In those days, not much happenedwithout my involvement.

Now let me draw you another picture: Fast forward to Julyof 2013, just 2-1/2 years later. I spend the entirety of themonth in way-off Wyoming. Far from coming to a halt, lifeat FHPC continues unabated. Here in no particular order is just a sampling of what transpired in my absence:

    Two weekly worship services were filled with meaningfupreaching, inspiring visual elements, and uplifting music and, yes, there was food and fellowship afterwards;

    Debby D and Tyson Robinson led five of our youth in joining 5,000 other Presbyterians from around the world in aTriennium held on the grounds of Purdue University;

Our Treasurer John Skewes and Finance Chair Jerry Cain

    completed favorable negotiations for renewal of our mortgage loan;

    Childrens Choir as well as our increasingly powerful praiseband, Hilltop, continued to gather weekly under DebbieFishers direction;

    Marta and the ever-present Office Angels maintained a highstandard of hospitality, problem-solving, information processing and business administration in our church office;

Mission Elders Susan Owens and Terri Schmidt, were instrumental in the implementation of SWATT (ServantWith a Task & Testimony), a new initiative seeking to bringrepresentatives from multiple Christian churches in Fountain Hills together to fight hunger amongst our High Schoo

students; Construction of our new Cell Tower commenced under the

    watchful eyes of Elders John Brockelman and Bob Lull;

    We continued to serve our greater Fountain Hills community by welcoming multiple AA meetings;

    Yvonne Ellingson, Ruby Pearson and our Deacons carriedout their ongoing ministry of home and hospital care;

Our Mens Fellowship, Mens Bible Study and PW Afternoon Circle all carried on with their regular gatherings aswell as impromptu and casual Music Ministry Gatherings.

Two very different pictures, wouldnt you agree? Know whathe difference is?

When reviewingJulys shortfall inIncome, please recallthat Junes favorable results were largely attributable to afifth Sunday in June (June 30th), wherein several individu-als dropped their July Pledges into the offering plate a littleearly. (This is never discouraged, by the way.) Conse-

quently, we expected a self-correcting drop-off inIncomefor July and that is what occurred. For Year-to-DateIn-come, we are still tracking favorably, but continue to ex-pect some gains to erode as we progress through the end ofthe summer and into early fall.Expenses for July and Year-to-Date are running slightly above Plan, but nothing alarming as yet. All consid-ered, the Church remains in a good position as we head into the last five monthsof the calendar year.

What a wonderful summer it has

been at FHPC! There have beenso many opportunities to get toknow some of those who areinvolved in our music ministryin small rehearsal groups, and,for those in town who wereable, meeting in a more casualsetting of a local restaurant everytwo to three weeks. We listened

to each other as wewould share thoughts, ideas

and dreams. We'dmeet after Mary LeeLehrich, our Topicand EntertainmentCoordinator for theMusic Ministry Gath-erings had given us atopic to discuss. Shec o o r d i n a t e swith Helen Quigley, our Music MinistrySecretary, also Wor-ship and Music Minis-try Elder, and therewould be the placeand time set for our

gatherings. We wereg i v e n t h ename Tweets, some-how, (I must've beenin a conversation orthe bathroom when itoccurred to me) andhopefully it doesn't stick! There were people who've beeninvolved for years in our music ministry sitting by thosewho have come along in recent years. What a fabu-lous and healthy experience. It was a valuable fellowshipand appreciated by so many. We have such a time re-straint during rehearsals once they begin, and it felt good

to get to know a person who shares the same faith and hasthe personality of one who wants to share their faiththrough music. We plan on keeping the gatherings go-ing, though more infrequent through the season of rehears-als. It seems to go along with the fact that shared musichelps to form social bonds, according to Norwegian re-searchers. They reported that singing in particular can trig-ger the release of endorphins, along with laughter, boost-ing your feelings of happiness and pleasure. Fur-ther exploratory research has found singing to have the

    Music MinistryMusic MinistryMusic MinistryMusic Ministry

    Debbie Fisher, Director of Music

same positive effects as Yoga for regulating breathingpatterns and reducing the variability of your heart-

beat. Add that to what researchers have discoveredabout how music lowers cortisol, the stress chemi-cal, and releases serotonin and oxytocin, which whenmeasured by researchers, found a decrease in anxietyand stress among the singers who were studied. Theresearch is fascinating. God, thought of everything!

I am excited to begin rehearsals for the sea-son. Though some involved in our music ministrywon't return until after Christmas, we hope to have awonderful turnout. If you are interested in being in-volved, please don't hesitate. Bring a friend. There is

a lot to do, andwe need the sup-port of all wholove music to beinvolved. Thereis room for youwhether singing,r i n g i n g ,or playing aninstrument ofa n o t h e rkind. You canspeak to me, oranyone you mayknow that is in-volved, and we

will be glad tog e t y o ustarted. Youmay contact methrough the

    church office,837-1763, or call

my cell phone, 480-688-0828. I'd be happy to speakwith you. As I once read:

A regular time and place. An open Bible.

    An open heart.

Let God have you, and let God love you, and don'tbe surprised if your heart begins to hear music you'venever heard before and your feet learn to dance asnever before.

If we did all the things we are capable of doing, wewould literally astonish ourselves. -Thomas Edison

I find that doing Mission work of any kind, to be astonishingas well as fulfilling. It takes so little to do so much good forothers, and Mission work is just that. It takes so little effortand time to make a difference in the lives of others. You canput a lot of time in or just a small amount of time, it all de-pends on you.

Heifer ProjectWe have started collecting money for this project.

We will continue to collect through Easter, and then we will

decide what the money will be used to buy. If you wish todonate to this project, and want your money to go to purchasea certain object, you may specify when donating. If it is notdesignated for a special item, we will put it in a joint kitty tobe used to purchase a larger item.

If you know someone who has everything but you wantto give them a gift, you can contribute in their name and theHeifer Project will send them a card stating the item that waspurchased for them and by whom. For more information thematerial is on the table in the Narthexor ask Terri orSusan.

    Extended Hands Food Bank

It is that time of the year again, when we need tohelp build up the food supply at Extended Hands Food Bank.We will be asking for more donations of non-perishablefoods. We need to help restock the shelves, before it getscool. Thank you to all who continue to bring in food items. We appreciate all of the items you have so generously givenin the past. Thank you to the Mens Club who take theseitems to the food bank for us. A BIG THANK YOU goes

out to Lynn Medley who has done this job single handed

over the summer months. We collected $44.00 in the month of July for Ex-

tended Hands Food Bank. This was just in the loose change

    In Touch page 4

    Mission MinistryMission MinistryMission MinistryMission Ministry

Terri Schmidt and Susan Owens, Elders

that you so generously gave each week. So all that bother-some loose change in your pockets and coin purses adds up

to do good things. The Food Bank is continuing their Friday Night

Fish Fry. We have told the Food Bank we will be happy tohelp them the first Friday of the month. Thank you toSusan Owens, Nancy Saine, and Nancy Wulfmeier forhelping with the first Friday back after the Food Banksmonth off. The cost of this Fish Fry is $11.99 for all youcan eat. This also includes a beverage and desserts.

Water for the HomelessWe are continuing to collect cases of water for the

homeless and less fortunate in downtown Phoenix. Thankyou to all who have brought in cases in the past. This issuch a small way to help those less fortunate than our-selves. Water is the most important thing that we can givethose in need. People can live longer without food thanwater; and this is why this mission is so important. We allneed water to survive, especially in this heat.

SWATTThis is our new Community Mission Project.

SWATT stands for Service With A Task and Testament. We have established a group of people from the Commu-nity and Fellow Churches here in town, to try and cometogether to do good things for the community. We have

had interest from several other Churches and townspeoplewho feel it is a worthwhile project as well. If you are in-terested and would like more information, you can talk toTerri or Susan.

Christmas for Changing Lives CenterWe will help Changing Lives Center again this

Christmas time. We want those of you in the congregationwho have sewing machines and would like to make Christ-mas stockings, to contact us. We thought it might be funfor those children living at the Center to have ChristmasStockings full of goodies. We will provide the material ifyou will donate your time to make the stockings. We will

fill the stockings and take them to the Center. This is asmall way to make these Childrens Christmas a little hap-pier.

These are just a few of the things we at Missionare doing. If any of these projects look like something youwould like to help out with, be sure and contact either Terrior Susan. If you want to be on this committee, we meet onthe second Monday of the month in the Conference Room

at 4:00pm. Thank you to all who have helped us

succeed in so many of our projects. You are

such a loving and giving congregation.

The Presence of Godin Exodus andDeuteronomyby Janice Catron

The books of Exodus and Deuteronomy invite us to re-member that the central actor in human experience in ourown lives and in the experiences described in Exodus andDeuteronomyis God. Our God is one who redeems, whobrings liberty and fulfillment even when we do not deserveit, when we cannot redeem ourselves. We have the assuranceof Gods abiding presence as individuals and as a commu-nity of faith. This presence helps us see that Gods redemp-tion is more than a saving from harsh circumstances; italso is a saving to the fullness of life God intends for hu-

    manity.

A woman and her grandson were spending the day together. Suddenly, the boy had an a-ha! expressionand asked, Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike? The grandmother smiled to herself and mentally polished her halo a bit. No, she replied. How?Youre both old! the boy said.Ah, but most grandparents really are like God in many ways kind, loving, forgiving, understanding, com-forting, creative, wise. Above all, theyve guided us to walk in Gods paths.Thank you, God, for these special people who have lived long enough to become like you, in many ways.

WHY DEUTERONOMY?The Old Testament book of Deuteron-omy is the anchor of the Jewish faith.Deuteronomy is the last of the fivebooks of Moses, called the Pentateuch. Its contents also contain all the laws thatJesus came to fulfill not to abolish.Do not think that I have come to abol-

ish the Law or the Prophets; I have not

come to abolish them but to fulfill

them. (Mt. 5:17) Some eighty times inthe New Testament these laws are refer-enced. Christs coming was Gods wayof showing the Israelites what the bookof Deuteronomy really was all about.

So, beginning Sunday, September 8thwe will begin the study of the book ofDeuteronomy. Written as the Israelitesare about to enter the Promised Land, the relevance of this 3,500 year old bookis startling. Come on this exciting jour-ney with us as we find out why we as

Christians should understand this impor-tant Old Testament document. Bring afriend!

We will resume at 10:15 am note theearlier time in the Adult Center.

    PRAYER

Does it Make a Difference? What is prayer? How does

it work? And more importantly, does

it work?Does prayer change us orGod? Or both?

If you've ever wrestled with this cen-tral practice of Christian life, this

class is for you!Building upon his fine book, Prayer, acclaimed author Philip Yancey leadsus on a DVD exploration of the topicwhich is as honest in its yearning as itis in its avoidance of easy answers. The key, Yancey tells us, is thatprayer is a window into knowing themind of God, whose kingdom is en-trusted to all of us frail, selfish peopleon earth. The book's strength lies inits balance, with Yancey holdingequally important ideals in a lively

tension; action and meditation, doubtand certainty, and the unchangingGod with the God who appears somoved by people's petitions in theBible that he changes his mind.Join Pastor Bill as we return to THEWAYfor this entertaining and insight-ful 6-week study on prayer. We highly recommend the Partici-pant's Guide by the author which willbe available in the church office or at

ing, brightand early(7:00 a.m.),we gather in the Adult Center for Fel-lowship, Bible Study, and confiden-tially share our joys and concerns. Allmen of the church of any age are in-vited and encouraged to join us for anhour that will be worth your time andenergy. Coffee and donuts are shared. But more important, we are learningmuch more from the study of theScriptures what God is calling us todo and be through his son, JesusChrist. Most of us are lacking inknowledge of the Bible. We are havinga lot of fun learning the context andmessages we find as we together ex-plore His Word. Why not give it a try?Men, it is just for you and we welcomeyour participation!

From the Director of Christian FormationFrom the Director of Christian FormationFrom the Director of Christian FormationFrom the Director of Christian Formation

A frequent question good to ask is: Whose lives are differ-ent because of this church? I delight inknowing the answer at FHPC is both

internally and externally focused forchanged lives.Externally you all serve others as a nor-mal way of living the Christian life andknow that good works of justice andmercy cant be separated from the GoodNews. I have always been impressed bythe grace here and how many of ourchurch members are in the communityand marketplace being the churchthrough love and action.Internally, here is one way lives are dif-ferent because of your love and sacrifi-

cial giving! The sending of the sevento the Triennium has watered souls forindividual growth and inspired each indifferent ways! This month youth willpersonally thank you and share how Godthrough the experience of the Trienniuminspired and changed them.Lets start with a few comments from my interview ques-tions with Tyson Robinson, our youth leader (and newdaddy) who attended the Triennium as a youth.

For what moment or experience were you most grateful for

    during the Triennium?

The moment that I am most grateful for was walk-ing into worship that first day. It really brought meback to the two prior Trienniums and enhanced theworship experience. I am also really grateful that Icould watch the youth grow in their faith and thechange from I am not sure I want to be here tothis is awesome. I love it here.I enjoyed the first service and the first skit whenthey were talking about why we were here. Itreally reflected what the students were think-ing. Another reason why I enjoyed the first servicewas the overwhelming noise, music and studentsthat were there. It is always a shock to walk intothat!

Debby: I agree, worshipping with 6000 people who were

mostly Presbyterian teens was awesome. I wish I had a pic-

ture of our group the first service sitting with mouths and

eyes wide open while teens and adults were standing, danc-

ing, singing in worship to the following days where our

group, in body and soul, fully entered into the joy of commu-

    nal worship.

What about this experience challenged or inspired you the

most?I think the change in attitude and the transformationin the youth from the beginning of trienniumthroughout this time was amazing to watch. It in-

    page 13 September 2013

spired me to be more involved with the church andyouth.Debby: We are blessed by your playful,

faithful commitment to God, our church anyouth. You and Kristi, despite long hours o

driving, work and family have never waned

in your desire to be a mentoring influence

    for our teens.

Tyson, you already have committed to go t

the next Triennium either as a leader or a

small group leader! Tell us about that dec

    sion! :)

It really was not a hard decision. Trienniumeant so much for me as a youth when

went that I always wanted to go back as aadult to see if it was as great as I remembered. I do have to say it is a little differenbut it helped me see the progression of mfaith and recharge my faith batteries. If all possible, I would love to go to the futuTrienniums- but I think I will have to tak

Kristi the next time!Debby: I am certain the grandparents would love to enjoy

    Ella in your absence!

Growing Souls Numerically and Spirituallyin All AgesIt takes a greenhouse to nurture the souls of young people, agreenhouse formed by adults who want to know God. A younpersons faith is best tended by a variety of relationships.

    - Mark Yaconelli

Ministry is a gift shared in community with others. It is nottask to be done or to do for others. Ministry is a sacred, nuturing place where God grows and shapes souls. Soulscapin

is my word for it. You may find that ministry with children

youth is like a spiritual practice. I have found this true. G

makes use of this sacred place to bring me to a more experie

tial knowing and trusting of Him. Many find it healing a

transforming. Participation in ministry with children oteens is intimately connected to God's movement in our livand with others. No one is to minister alone! Even Jesus d

not. I am praying for 12 disciples who will disciple others.

We are presently forming a group of people who can see thministry setting as part of their own spiritual growth whinurturing children and families. I am planning a different wof being together for this adventure. We are now blessed wi

children in nursery, preschool, elementary and teens. Moopportunities to make disciples who make disciples to changour world!

    A Cross to Eternity

Everyone has, or will have, "a cross to bear", aheavy burden of responsibility or a problem forwhich they alone must cope. Some last a life-time. Others are temporary. Yet, as difficult asour burdens may be, Jesus promises He willnever leave us, never forsake us and will help

each of us carry our cross into eternity with Him,where we will bear them no more. That can betoday all you need to do is ask

Robert Coleman, in Written in Blood (Fleming H. Revell), tellsof a boy whose sister needed a blood transfusion. The boy wasthe ideal donor because the two children had the same rare bloodtype. When the doctor asked, Would you give your blood toyour sister? the boy hesitated. Finally, with a trembling lip, he said, Sure, Id do it for her.Soon a nurse inserted a needle into the boys arm. As hewatched his blood flow out, his voice shook. He asked, Doctor, when do I die? The doctor then realized the gravity of the boys

decision. Hed thought giving his blood to his sister meant giv-ing up his own life. The boys love for his sister mirrored Jesus love for all. Fortu-nately for us, Jesus loved us so deeply that he was willing to dieso we might live.

    At the memorial service for

Rev. Glenn Atchinson, ourchurchs founding pastor, thehymnI Love to Tell the Storywas the theme of the servicebecause this is what Glennliked to do and did it well.

And he wrote down some of those stories and pub-lished them in both a book and booklet that areavailable in the Church Library.

His book is titled A Sliver of Light Out of Darkness:Gathering Truth Through Life Stories. It is a collec-

tion of life stories where truth found root in humanlife. Each chapter begins with a story about a spe-cific person that he knew and is followed by hiswords shared with his congregations, expounding onthat theme as a message of life to all who have earsto hear. His handwritten inscription in the front ofthe book reads To my many friends at the FountainHills Presbyterian Church. Many of the stories ofyou are in this book!

It continues throughthe years to our present church campus and Glennsretirement in 1998 with interesting narrative, in-cluding the names of many church leaders and staffinstrumental in the establishment and building ofthe church over the years. Every one counts!Im an avid player of Yahtzee, in which you roll five dice to collect different number combinations. Its a

game of both chance and strategy. Because it seems less problematic to accept a roll thats short by one pointrather than a roll thats short by, say, six, every so often Im disappointed to discover Ive missed winning by onlyone point.

We do something similar in church and other parts of life: dismiss a childs idea as less important than anadults; worry more about pleasing the big givers at church than the ones who contribute less; check in on thelongtime member who misses worship once but forget about the newcomer who attended twice, then didnt return.

Jesus, the Good Shepherd, leave 99 sheep in order to go after just one who is lost. May we learn from hisexample that everyoneevery onecounts.

Their eyeswould always light up with awe, but she never got a response equal to four-year oldDavid's comment. Gently she tucked the stethoscope into his ears and placed thedisk over his heart. 'Listen', she said...'What do you suppose that is?' He drew hiseyebrows together in a puzzled line and looked up as if lost in the mystery of thestrange tap - tap - tapping deep in his chest. Then his face broke out in a wondrousgrin and he asked, 'Is that Jesus knocking?'

    Spotlight . Did you know?Spotlight . Did you know?Spotlight . Did you know?Spotlight . Did you know?Matt Jefferson

Matt was born in Balti-more, Maryland but grew up in

Southern California in SanDiego, Los Angeles and Pasa-dena. He has lived in Arizonafor 23 years. His first summerhere was the year the tempera-ture hit a record 122 which re-sulted in the temporary closingof Sky Harbor.

Matt has four siblings and what is nice is they live in verydesirable places to visit. He has sisters in San Diego,Sherman Oaks, and San Francisco and a brother in Paris,France. Thank heavens he is on good terms will all of them. For the most part he tries to stick to the 3 day rule when hestays with family members.

When asked what was the craziest thing you have everdone, Matt responded, As a teen I joined with three of myfriends one evening and we successfully TPd the substa-tion of our local law enforcement agency. I think we did acouple dozen rolls worth. You can imagine our horrorwhen as we were making our getaway, we noticed severalblocks later, that a roll of toilet paper was streaming fromthe rear door of our vehicle, a tell-tale sign that we were theperpetrators. You will notice that I have not provided thename of the agency or the town. Although I can assure youI was a minor at the time, Im just not sure what the statue

    of limitations is.

Matts first job was as a Summer Day Camp Counselor forthe Pasadena YMCA.

His favorite job was as a Manager with Pacific Telephonebased in San Francisco in 1983. He was responsible forfinding office space and developing floor plans for ten of-fices covering 14 western states in preparation for thebreakup of the Bell System. They started in March and hadto complete their tasks by December 31 because Divestiturewas effective 1-1-84. According to Matt it was great towork with a team that had a shared sense of urgency. Theyopened every location on time but the real challenge was

trying to satisfy all of the local stakeholders in each loca-tion.

A side benefit of this assignment was traveling to differentcities, i.e. Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Portland, Boise, Seattle,Laguna Hills, Monterey Park, and Denver. Matt earned somany frequent flyer miles he was able to subsequentlytravel first class to Tokyo, Japan with lodging included.

Matt has been a member of Fountain Hills PresbyterianChurch since January 2005.

When asked what was the most interesting event or accom-plishment in your life? Matt responded that hesurvived Marine Corps Boot Camp in 1966. He was able to

turn it into a positive outcome as evidenced by 3 meritori-ous promotions and the ability to select, all of his perma-nent duty stations including Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii for 3

years. He was honorably discharged in 1970.

The best advice he was given was to follow the GoldenRule and to change the oil in his car every 3,000miles.Matts parents have had the most impact on his life. His Dad was a Methodist Minister and his Mom was anElementary School Teacher. It was not uncommon forMethodist Ministers to move to a new church every 4-5years; he learned to adapt to new places and to make newfriends. He also developed an early interest in reading andlearning.

Matt humbly admitted that he may have had the mostpositive influence on hundreds of young people who now

range in age from 22-32. Thats because when he retiredfrom the corporate rat race in 1997, he served as CampDirector the summers of 1998 and 1999 at Camp Wamato-chick in the Prescott National Forest. His first year asCamp Director, he encountered a camper who was experi-encing a difficult case of homesickness. He worked withhim several times every day of his week at residence campto let the camper know how proud he was that he wasmaking it through another day. The next year he returnedto camp and brought a friend with him. He made a pointeach time their paths crossed to let Matt know how hisconfidence in him the previous year had made all the dif-ference for his first time away from home experience.

There are others out there just like this camper. Most ofthe time, we just never know the impact we have on otherswith our words or deeds. For a more recentpositive influ-ence example here at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church, please see page 51 of the One in the Spiritpublished byour Presbyterian Women in 2010.

Matt advises that everyone follow the Golden Rule, getthe oil changed in their car every 3,000 miles and buy lowand sell high. In addition he would suggest that theytravel throughout the U.S. and abroad. Traveling givesyou a different perspective and most of the time makesyou appreciate what you have here at home.

The thing that Matt likes best about our church isthe fellowship with members and the camaraderie he en-joys with his fellow choir members.

Finally, Matt would like to add, Many of you know that Irefer to myself as a recovering retiree. My second careerhas focused on the non-profit world. I have primarilybeen employed in fund development roles. The singlemost important principle that I learned is before you canask someone else to give of their time, talent and/or treas-ure you have to be willing to make an investment first. Ithink this is referred to as walking the talk.

    God bless!

    Hospitalized? Call the church!

Ifyou are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from ill-ness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a con-gregation like ours where people leave in droves for extendedsummer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to

assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simplyvacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick andwe are not aware of it.You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know ofyour situation. We have an excellent support system in placedue to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve youby communicating your situation.

    Saving grace
