SEPTEMBER
Meadow Vista — On June 4, 2015, 23-year-old David George Eugene Davison Jr. losthis life battle with Duchenne Muscular Dys-trophy (DMD). But in those 23 years, David
affected the lives of hundreds of people farbeyond his home.
According to the Muscular Dystrophy Asso-ciation, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is “agenetic disorder characterized by progres-sive muscle degeneration and weakness.”
According to his parents Maria and David E.Davison, David, or Junior as the family re-ferred to him, always had a smile on his faceand always wanted to talk to and meet newpeople. He had two passions in life, motor-cycles and his church. His mother recalledthat “Once at Mass he had the opportunityto talk to the congregation, and he did nothesitate to take the mike and share his lovewith everyone in attendance.”
His love for motorcycles went far beyond afascination — he was crazy about motorcy-cles. Fast Fridays was one of his favorite plac-es to visit. He became very good friends withthe sidecar riders, who travel from SouthernCalifornia and visit the Auburn venue severaltimes a year. His father said, “All of the side-car riders work out of the same shop in CostaMesa, and David would call down there whenhe knew they were working on their bikes, and they would put him on speaker phoneand he would ask questions and give adviceto the crews.”
One of his most prized possessions was ared, white and blue helmet signed by manyof the riders from Fast Fridays.
As his he grew older, the ravages of DMDbegan to take its toll. Although he could

PHEF, a charitable organization that raisesfunds in support of programs at the SierraHills and Weimar Hills Schools, sold over250 tickets for the event. With the Meadow Vista Lions Club manning grills to supplygourmet burgers, and the Leo Club, aLions Club feeder program at Colfax HighSchool, set up and cleaned up after thenight was done.
Besides the good food and entertainmentby the band Killer Fish was the home brewcontest which was being held for the rsttime. Winners in this inaugural event wereAdam Deiter and Carlos Del Pozo, their
Vanilla Bourbon Porter was a clear favorite. Many of the teachers and administratorsfor the two local schools also contributedtime and effort in making the evening ahuge success, and according to organizersover $10,000, double of last year’s total, was raised this year.
According to Barbara Webb, one of the
event’s organizers, the evening was a hugesuccess, “All and all, I think everyone hadfun. I look forward to seeing how thesefunds will enrich the lives of the students ofPlacer Hills Union School District.”

walk when he was younger, by his teen yearshe was primarily conned to a wheelchair, and by the time he graduated high schoolin 2010 he had already been dependent ona respirator for several years. But that neverstopped him.
His father talked about how they would gohunting and shing together, his dad carry-ing young David on his back to a duck blindand then going back to his car for the gear. His dad built a special trailer that could hecould roll up into and then be pulled by amotorcycle. “He would take his motorizedwheelchair and cruise through the neighbor-
hood, telling us that he was OK,” his fathersaid. In addition, he always thought of oth-ers rst. “He knew he was sick, but he neverfelt that he was disabled,” his sister Jennifersaid.
Through David, the family was very involvedwith helping to raise money and awarenessfor MDA. His sister helped organize “TeamHarley Boy,” a team that eventually includ-ed 50 to 60 members who would annuallyparticipate in the MDA march at the StateCapital. And, in his usual manner, just a cou-ple of years ago David got up on stage atthe march and shared with the crowd, “I amgoing to live forever.”
David continued to give and share, evenafter he was taken to the hospital on June2. Two days after arriving at Sutter Auburn
Faith, a successful harvesting of his organswas performed and he shared his liver andkidneys with an anonymous recipient, andheart and skin tissue, as well as heart valveswere harvested for future use.
“He was an inspiration, a light that will nevergo out,” his mother said.
David’s sister Jennifer Campbell has orga-nized a memorial indoor soccer tournamentJuly 18 in Sacramento, and a Go-Fund Meaccount to help with nal costs and a cele-bration of life that will be held Aug. 1, at theGold Country Fair Grounds. CHP helicoper rescues vacaioning manColfax — An injured hiker was rescuedSunday with the aid of the California High-way Patrol’s helicopter.
Around 1 p.m. Aug. 23 the CHPs H-20 wasrequested for a Search and Rescue (SAR)by Grass Valley Cal Fire dispatch center.
They received a call for an injured hiker onSteven’s Trail east of Colfax, CA. H-20 re-sponded from Auburn Airport and arrivedin the area within ten minutes and beganthe search. The crew obtained the partiescell phone number from Cal Fire and wasable to call them directly from the heli-copter. This aided the search and allowedthem to nd the injured hiker immediately, ofcials said.
During the cell phone call, ofcers learnedthat the victim was visiting from Spain andwent on a hike with friends along Steven’s
Trail. The hiker, identied as Anes Sassitook a 100 foot tumble down a steep em-bankment and severely injured his ankle tothe point he was unable to walk. A friend
used their cell phone and called 911.H-20 located Sassi and friends and directedCal Fire ground personnel to their location. They were approximately three miles eastof Colfax on the trail which took rescue per-sonnel a while to reach them. Once rescuewas on scene, they determined the safestoption was to hoist Sassi to the helicopterand deliver him to a ground ambulance inColfax. H-20 completed the hoist withoutincident and delivered him to an awaitingground ambulance. He was transported toAuburn-Faith Hospital for treatment.
Even though Steven’s Trail is a well main-tained, popular hiking trail, you never knowwhen something can go awry.

Sierra College Spanish sudens collaborae wih local non-profiThe Akwaaba Foundation, a Meadow Vista based educational non-prot(501c3) organization (www.akwaaba.org), provides cloud-based educationalsoftware to students and educatorsaround the world for free.
Simpolicon is currently in Beta testingand the Foundation has sought pro
bono assistance with foreign languagestranslations to help eliminate barriers toparticipation. Simpolicon (a simulationof political and economic sustainabledevelopment) is a computer-simulatedworld, based on real world conditions.Students act as the political andeconomic leaders of their respectivenations using their own naturalresources and trading with other nationsto create sustainable economies fortheir own countries and for the entireworld. The Foundation’s goal is tohave students in different countriesparticipate in the same simulated worlds, thereby experiencing international
communication, cross-cultural learningand cooperation. Such experiencesare meant to give today’s youth —tomorrow’s future world leaders —insight and experience in economics, leadership, and international relations.
Sara Casler, Spanish Department Chair, and Wendy Crawford, have taken onthe translation project as part of theirclassroom work this semester.
When interviewed about the project,Professor Casler had this to say:
Q: Why did you agree to take on thisproject?
Sara Casler: There are several reasonswhy we thought this was a great tfor the World Languages and Spanishprograms at Sierra College, butthe most important is the commongoals that the Akwaaba Foundationand our programs have: to helpothers collaborate in meaningful andproductive ways; to educate otherswith the most effective and affordablemethods and tools (free in the caseof the Akwaaba Foundation); and toinspire life-long learning in students. Also, after I met with Denney andLaura Daetz I felt that they sincerelyunderstood the level of service wecould provide and were happy to work
within those parameters.
Q: How is it going?
SC: I couldn’t be more pleased with theprogress my fourth semester studentsare making. After the rst week of class Iknew that this particular group of studentswas ready to take on the challenging skillof translation in the safe and controlledenvironment of the Simpolicon interfacelanguage. I just nished evaluating therst drafts of the students’ translationsand I am very proud that their work is highquality and professional. There are someareas where we need to revise in orderto keep common terms consistent, thereare a few spelling errors to be corrected, and there were a few lines that we have
needed to clarify with the Simpolicon
[developer], but I am condent that theirnal drafts will be ready to pass to ourclient.
Q: Are your students enjoying theproject?
SC: Yes, I felt that after I explained theproject and the goals of the Akwaaba
Foundation I had total buy-in from thestudents. I hope that they also feel proudof their work because it is not commonfor second year students to provideprofessional translations. The studentshave worked individually and we havealso had two “translation workshops”where they could ask others for theirideas and support for difcult terms.
Q: What is unique about the project?
SC: There are many factors that make thisproject unique, the rst being the missionof the Akwaaba Foundation to providefree educational software to students
and educators around the world. Formy students, this project is uniquebecause they are able to participatein a community service project wherethey are able to use the language theyare working so hard to learn. I noticedthat I had a higher participation rate inthis “homework” project compared toother homework assignments becausethe students feel a healthy sense ofobligation to our client, and they can feelthe practical application of their skills. As an instructor I’ve been challenged tocreate a carefully scaffolded assignmentto help my students complete thetranslations accurately, feeling supportedthroughout the process.

The tomato sandwich is one of my all-time
favorites. I have many fond memoriescoming home after school and throwing aquick tomato sandwich together to curb mycravings. Toasted white bread, slathered inmayonnaise sprinkled with black peppersandwiching the perfectly ripened redtomato — the simplest of ingredientscoming together to make a great afternoonsnack.
I came across a recipe by one of my favoritechefs, Jose Andres. It was his beefsteaktomato sandwich — a large and in chargetomato sandwich made with brioche buns, caper aioli, alfalfa sprouts, avocado andpickled onions.
I saw this beast of a sandwich and I was
in love. I knew I had to play with this andmake it my own.
Dan can be reached at [email protected]
1. Make the pickled red onions: Place the onions in a medium nonreactive bowl. In a small-size saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the water, red wine vinegar, sugar, salt, thyme and black peppercorns. Bring to a boil. Pour over the red onions and let maceratefor 1 hour. Drain the liquid and discard the thyme and peppercorns. Makes 1½ cups.
2. Make the herbed mayo: In a small bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, mustard, capers, parsley and lemon juice. Season with salt and set aside. Makes 1 cup.
3. Make the sandwich: Prepare an ice bath. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Using aparing knife, cut a small “x” on the bottom of each tomato. Using a slotted spoon, lowerthe tomato into the boiling water and cook until the skin starts to peel back slightly, 10 to20 seconds. Immediately transfer the tomato to the ice bath. After about 10 to 15 seconds, remove the tomato from the ice bath and use the paring knife to peel off the skin. Cut thetomato into four ¾-inch-thick slices.
4. Spread both halves of each bun with the herbed mayonnaise. Season the tomato andavocado slices with salt and pepper. Place 1 tomato slice and a few slices of avocado oneach bottom bun. Top each sandwich with pickled onions, pea shoots and the top bun,and serve.
