Catechetical Sunday “Do This in Memory of Me” Why has a special day been set aside to celebrate and commission catechists? Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Catholic Church. “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life…her inner growth and correspondence with God’s plan depend essentially on catechesis” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 7). This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others. As we focus on this year’s theme, “Do This in Memory of Me”, let us each reflect on the role that we play, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. It is also a time for all of us to rededicate ourselves to this ministry as a community of faith. Catechetical Sunday “Do This in Memory of Me”

Why has a special day been set aside to celebrate and

commission catechists?

Catechesis is a distinct and special ministry in the Catholic Church. “Catechesis is intimately bound up with the whole of the Church’s life…her inner growth and correspondence with God’s

plan depend essentially on catechesis” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 7).

This ministry of teaching in the name of the Church has a

profound dignity, which is why catechists are formally commissioned by the Church. It is only fitting that we set aside a day to highlight this ministry and invite the entire church community

to think about our responsibility to share our faith with others.

As we focus on this year’s theme, “Do This in Memory of Me”, let us each reflect on the role that we play, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. It is also a time for all of us to rededicate ourselves to this ministry as a

community of faith.

LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, Years ago the Bishops of our country decided to honor the men and women who are catechists in the field. Thus Catechetical weekend was designated each fall as the time to remember how much intentional work goes into all the phases of religious education, catechetical formation and sacramental preparation. In our parish, we have all kinds of catechists who work with children, adults; those seeking sacraments; those who are exploring faith and returning to Catholic faith life. Please pray for our catechists as we remember them this weekend at Mass. We start this week with Religious Education for High School and Elementary School. The calendar continues to unfold! I hope you are finding the three minute catechesis pieces we are doing during Mass on the revised translation of the Roman Missal helpful. We are almost finished. You can find these brief texts both in the Bulletin and on the parish website www.stjeanvianney.org. I am aware that St. Michael High School homecoming is this week. Hope the young folks at St. Michael’s enjoy the events of Homecoming week. Next Saturday morning, the 24th, there will be altar server training for both the new trainees and the veteran servers in Church from 10:00am until 1:00pm. I am grateful to the parents who provide our servers for Masses each weekend. Small Faith Communities is a tradition in our parish during the Fall and Spring semesters. We are using again this year QUEST which brings the Sunday Scriptures into focus through faith sharing and prayer. Since the commitment is for only six weeks or so, Small Faith Sharing Communities can really enhance your faith journey. Give it some thought and prayer. Our parish will welcome the week of November 7th Fr. R.B. Williams for our annual Parish Mission. Fr. RB is nationally known for his Parish Missions and in fact, he recently gave the Priest Retreat for the priests of the Diocese. I think you will really find Fr. R. B.’s wisdom helpful in your spiritual life. Mission nights’ will be Monday-Wednesday.

We extend our sympathy to the following parishioners who recently lost a loved one:

Jim Ledford on the death of his mother, Marie Ledford.

Mr. & Mrs. Paul Gantt on the death of his mother, Jean Celestin.

Hope you are having a great week. Love,

WOMEN’S RETREAT OCTOBER 15-16, 2011

The Mystery of Faith Once again, we are taking the time to review the changes in the language of the Mass that we will begin using on the

First Sunday of Advent. Today we continue our ex-amination of the elements of the Eucharistic Prayer by focusing on the acclamations in the middle of the Eucharistic Prayer called the Mystery of Faith or the Memorial Acclamations. Midway through the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest repeats the words of Jesus from the Last Supper over the bread and wine. This is a crucial part of the Mass because it reflects our belief that during the Eucharistic Prayer, the bread and wine are consecrated to become the body and blood of Christ, just as at the Last Supper. You will notice some slight changes in these words of institution spoken by the priest that are intended to add richness to these important words. After the words of Institution, the priest currently invites us to “proclaim the mystery of faith” and we respond with one of four different acclamations. Beginning in Advent, those acclamations will change. The first change, is the priest’s introduction to the acclamations. We are accustomed to hearing the priest invite us to proclaim these acclamations by saying, “Let us proclaim the mystery of faith.” In the new translation, the priest will simply say, “The Mystery of Faith.” Instead of an invitation, it becomes a simple, faith-filled statement that prompts our response. At this point in the Mass, the priest is in the midst of a lengthy prayer to God the Father. By saying, “Let us proclaim,” as he does currently, he shifts his focus from the Father, to us, in order to extend an invitation. By omitting the words, “Let us proclaim,” he is able to keep centered on his role. Instead of the four acclamations, we will now have only three. The most significant change you will notice with the new acclamations is that they are now, not proclamations of faith as before, but acclamations that are directed to someone. That “someone” is Christ. Thus, the new translations “acclaim” Christ. Next week we will learn some new musical settings for these acclamations.
