From the Desk of Fr.
Most of this past week, during daily mass, Jesus was on a roll telling the scribes and the Pharisees as it was. He criticized them for their hypocrisy and it was not pretty. This Sunday is no exception. In today’s gospel the Lord, once again, lets it come down on them.
Contrary to what we might think, Jesus is not doing this to humiliate or destroy them—keep in mind that God does not see and treat others as we do. He was doing it in an attempt to open their eyes to the contradictions in their hearts. He is trying to tell them of the evils they were harboring while at the same time pretending to serve the Lord, who is love.
The catalog of evils He saw in them was pretty long, “…evil thoughts, unchastely, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly…” Phew! The list may go on and on. The good news is that Jesus is blasting the scribes and the Pharisees only. The bad news is that we all have a little of them in us. All of us have come in close contact with some or all of the evils He mentioned.
What we have, that the scribes and Pharisees also had but could not see, is a Savior. Jesus came to them first, to save them from all these evils, but their hearts were too hardened to accept Jesus as the Son of the living God who had come to deliver them from evil. They rejected the gift of forgiveness the Lord was offering them and the healing of their hearts.
It is the same today, in the sense that Jesus offers us the gift of forgiveness and healing in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and very few people accept it—even Catholics. We reject it, just as those disciples who found the teachings of Jesus about the Eucharist too hard to accept rejected that.
Do we really know what we are doing in rejecting such a gift? Is our heart in need of purification right now? How is it going for us, trying to purify it ourselves? Is it working? Are you sure?
Let us see Jesus’ gift for what it is—a help to our salvation! He wants to bless us with His mercy. Let us accept it as He is offering it and not as we want it to be offered to us.
Save the date…

Dear People of St. Barbara,
As I promised, I’m letting you know where I’m being assigned. I just heard that I’ll be going to Divine Savior in Norridge. I’m familiar with the area and the parish.
I was in their cluster when I was stationed at St. Gertrude in Franklin Park. My great aunt, who was a nun, taught in Divine Savior School and lived in the convent back in the early 1960’s. With my family, I visited there as a kid. The pastor is a classmate of mine, whom I’ve known since the early 1970’s.
I appreciate my time with you. I thank you for your hospitality and support.
Thank you, and know that I keep you all in my prayers. Please keep me in yours.
Gratefully, Rev. James D. Beath Divine Savior 7740 W Montrose Avenue Norridge IL 60706-7211 708.456.9000
