Summer Conferences

Summer. That special time of year where relaxation is key. Where you don’t have to worry about home-work, deadlines, or Greek business. How-ever, that wasn’t totally true for a few members from our community. Many of our chapters sent multiple members to their na-tional convetions this summer. These ladies and gentlemen were given the opportunity to

connect with members from all over the coun-try. An opportunity most don’t get to enjoy. When asked, the students that got to go, say it was a great learn-ing experience. Business was conducted, but it never felt like that. Yes, business can be fun. Conventions allow us to realize that our community is so much larger than this tiny Minnesota town. Alpha Sigma Alpha trav-

eled to Virginia Beach, while Gamma Phi Beta hung out in Denver. We also had four members attend UIFI. Christina Miller, who was granted the op-portunity to work as an intern, Matt Ward, Jeff Purdy and Jacob Moe. It’s amazing to see the opportuni-ties Greek Life gives us. There really are no limits in these organiza-tions.

The Greek community wasted no time getting back into the swing of things. Welcome Week is a huge event on our campus, and we were more than willing to help out. Starting bright and early on Thursday, August 23, many chapters gathered on campus to assist with move crew. The day was divided into two shifts, and you couldn’t walk down any block without seeing someone in letters lending a helping hand. It was a busy day, but it was great to see our whole community coming together for one common goal. On Friday, August 24 Impact and the Greek community joined forces to host Backyard Bash. This huge event was held in he U parking

lot and featured a live band, 4 story tall water slide, and delcious food. The Broken Resolve played two sets that morning, keeping the crowd energized. During their break, DJ’s Lambda Alpha mixed and enteretained the crowd. The music scene was a fun way to welcome students to their new home. Finally, the waterslide. As tall as the library, you couldn’t miss it. Impact always had the best toys. The slippery attraction kept people cool for hours. The event went off without a hitch. A lot of thanks goes out to all of our members that showed up to mingle and help throughout the entire event. Our final Greek sponsored event was the Help Tents. Set up at

all of the busiest corners were tents staffed by community members ready to make students’ first day at school easier. Each tent was loaded with maps, gum, mints, water and friend-ly faces. The best part, everything was entirely free. this event proved to be very successful, one tent even ran out of supplies on the first day. This was a great way for all chapters to connect with students, and to shine a positive light on Greek life. So far our school year has proved to be a very busy one, but being able to enteract and help out on campus has been a wonderful opportunity for us. We look forward to a fun and exciting year!

Formal Recruitment. It’s a cra-zy time of year, but a wonderful one. It’s the time of year where each chap-ter gets to put their story out there in hopes of reaching girls that will help grow and continue their legacy. This year proved to be a suc-cessful one. Keep Calm and Go Greek was the theme that worked wonders for us. The sororities have welcomed 54 new girls with open arms. Pi Rho Chi’s were busy this summer tabling, hanging out at ori-entations and preparing for the crazy

weekend. But in the end it all paid off. Gamma Phi Beta and Sigma Sigma Sigma each added 16 new girls. Alpha Chi Omega welcomed 15 and Alpha Sigma Alpha gained 7. Most chapters have reached total, but those who have not will be hosting recruitment events over the semester hoping to reach that num-ber. The fraternities have been par-ticipating in continuous open bidding all summer, and semester. they are also preparing for Fraternity recruit-

ment week which took place Septem-ber 10-14. Each chapter hosted their own events, and also participted in the Fra-ternity Meet and Greet on September 6. By the looks of things, recruit-ment is going well for everyone and we can’t wait to watch our commu-nity continue to grow. It may be a stressful time of year, but if we follow our slogan, this year should go off without a hitch. Keep Calm and Go Greek!
