    Originally published in six volumes, this work stands as a major literaryachievement of the 18th century, and was adopted as a model for the

    methodologies of modern historians. Gibbon is often called the rst modernhistorian of Ancient Rome.

    An extensive history based on excavations Schliemann conducted at Hissarlik, which isnow presumed to be the site of Troy. Schliemanns work lent credence to his belief thatthe classic epic poems of Homer and Virgil were based on historical events. The textrecounts ndings that indicate the presence of seven separate cities on the excavation site,and is illustrated with numerous wood engravings. The appendices, containing numer-ous essays related to Schliemanns research, and the index, are both enormous, togetherrepresenting nearly one quarter of the text.

She includesinformation about the sources from which the writings were taken, as well(e.g., Lines written by my father to Mr. E.F. Chase of Rochester on his 55thBirthday, January, 1887).

    George H. Newell was the rst commodore of the Rochester Yacht Club, andcaptain of the yacht Ripple. This volume recounts numerous voyages theRipple took on Lake Ontario in journal-style entries.

    The rst work to be released by the Shakespeare Head

    Press, a ne press in Shakespeares hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon which undertookto carry on the sort of printing that the Kelmscott Press made famous. The only completeset of his works to be produced in his hometown, and is often called The Stratford TownShakespeare. This set was reproduced by Dufeld & Company of New York in anotherlimitation of 1000, which is the set offered here.

    Very good. No jackets. Spine labels toned with loss from two volumes, boards of a couplevolumes lightly soiled. Descriptive label tipped in on front endpaper of rst volume.

    Sarah Adamss illustrations. Sadly, neither Mrs. Westervelt nor Sarah Adams survived tosee the books publication, but another copy of this book, which we donated afterlearning the works history, is now held in the collection of the Rochester School for theDeaf.
