Café OMI

• Now a Subway Franchise!– Currently serving sandwiches (eventually soups

and salads) – Over 600 eating daily, a 30% increase of

participation over last year– Breakfast alternating between bagels, cereal,

yogurt, etc– Wednesdays and Fridays arePapa John’s Pizza!– Still complies with Federal NSBLP guidelines

New Leaders of Character Building

• 9000 SF; six classrooms• About 85% complete now• Scheduled grand opening 1 Nov• All military staff will have offices• Regimental HQs• Cadet leadership “lounge”• On budget and on time!

Honors/ Movement toward IB

• Sixth grade honors section• 7/8 honors science, social studies and English• Team of middle school teachers investigated IB

over the summer and wants to begin to move in that direction, possibly for the entire middle school

• Added an AP Human Geog class for grade 9

Common Core

• Moving quickly toward full implementation• Still many unanswered questions from the state regarding

assessment and materials• Money set aside this year and next to help with

professional development and materials purchases• Multiple math classes transitioning thanks to great work by

math teachers in summer PD• English classes transitioning as a result of PD attended by

various folks• Sci/HSS also incorporating various elements of CC• Introducing a Common Core 3 class in Math

Cesley’s New Role

• Director of Alumni and College Outreach– Will help get scholarships for all students– Will help alums get through college successfully– Will create a robust outreach program to alums– Will work toward partnerships with colleges who

will give “full rides” to our grads

New military staff

• Now a TAC Officer and TAC NCO in each company, including music

• Support NCOs at regimental level to help with citizenship processes

• Operations SGM to focus on formation, cadet leadership development, curriculum and instruction, physical education program, etc

• SGM Depp as Dean• Very successful summer camp

Library

• Doris Lundy a 20 hour/week trained librarian through Diablo Valley College

• Cathy Francioch, retired Oakland Librarian continues to volunteer services

• Linh Nguyen will help run Udacity classes each period in VLC

Luis Garza: Data Coach

• Focus on using data to inform instruction• Narrowing the achievement gap• Getting us to 800• Interim assessment analysis• Helping us individually examine data from

various sources to focus energies on places we can make the biggest impact on student achievement

• Assisting with the WASC process

Special Education

• Now almost completely “in house”• Audit of suspension/expulsion rates• SPED Staff– Director– Two resource teachers– Two aides– Two educational psychologists (for assessment and

counseling)– Speech therapist (contracted) along with other special

services contracted

Other Facilities Issues

• Working with Lena Sullivan and with additional Lusk owner for purchase

• Facilities Master Planning project• Solar installation possibility on main campus• Partnership with Longfellow Community

Association for Community Garden and community clean up efforts

Platoon Teachers

• Attend morning formation– Assist with calling habitually absent or tardy students– Ensure there is a daily “grade” recorded by cadet leaders for both

uniform compliance and attendance on time– Daily check of a particular uniform item to be announced at

formation • That teacher’s room on rainy days• Support at Pass in Review, Cadet Corps Birthday Challenge,

Cadet Olympics, etc.• In emergency drill with a formation, go to that place• Motivate platoon members on “competitions” such as candy

sale, food drives, etc

Academic Support

• 6th graders are here until 5:30 daily• All “low performing” 7th graders will also be

here daily until 5:30• Students below proficient automatically

assigned AS along with ALL new cadets

• All periods throughout the day in VLC• Linh Nguyen (OMI alum) is manager• Many lessons learned from last semester

Some Areas of Strength• Excellent growth in 6th grade in math and English

– over 15% growth in English– More than doubled math proficiency rate (from 24% to 55%)

• Steady growth in MS math scores • Steady growth in MS science and history scores• Great improvement across the board in the 9th grade

– English proficiency up 13% – Algebra proficiency up over 10%– Geometry proficiency increasing

• 10th grade CAHSEE -- 91% pass rate in English and• 88% pass rate in math

AFRICAN-AMERICAN• 6th grade doubled ELA scores and tripled the math scores!!!• 8th grade improvement across the board

~ELA almost 10% improvement~science over 30% improvement~history and Algebra almost 30% improvement~Geometry doubled: 100% proficient in Geometry

• 9th grade doubled ELA proficiency (24% to 50%)• 9th grade nice improvement in Alg and Geometry-- Went from 0% to

17% (Alg) and 33% (Geometry)• 11th grade approximately 10% improvement in ELA and US History • -11th grade improvement in Biology went from 0% to
