Cantonese Day...Can or Can Not?Local Guangdong citizens have been campaigning to name every July

25 - "Cantonese Day". The campaign followed reports that Guangdong TV had planned to switch the language of most programmes on its

news channel from Cantonese to Putonghua, starting in September. The plan for the network to switch its news channel to Putonghua has

now been shelved indefinitely.

Triple HappinessThe Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou has unveiled newborn panda triplets, billed as the world’s first known surviving trio and hailed as a “miracle”, given the panda bear’s famously low reproductive rate. The mum, Juxiao, meaning “chrysanthemum smile”, and her babies, are said to be in “good condition”.

Get Your Masks On!With new -- and stricter -- air quality monitoring standards now

applied by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, only nine of 161 Chinese cities have been found to have “acceptable”

air quality. In Guangdong, only Shenzhen and Zhuhai made the cut. Hope you’ve bought an air purifier!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare’s The Globe TheatreA wickedly funny and dazzling farce filled with inventive magical elements, A Midsummer’s Night Dream follows four lovers who enter a forest filled with fairies and magical spells, only to become embroiled in a battle of love between the fairies. William Shakespeare put some of his most dazzling dramatic poetry at the service of this teasing, glittering, hilarious and amazingly inventive play, whose seriousness is only fleetingly glimpsed beneath its dreamlike surface. In commemoration of the 450th Birthday of Shakespeare and directed by the Globe’s Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole, the Globe’s production brings the play back to its Elizabethan roots with authentic Renaissance costumes and staging, as well as live music by musicians on stage...definitely NOT to be missed!

T his year's

Italy Wine Tour was so amazing with stunning places,

lots of new faces, with gorgeous hidden talents!

As we explored the streets and vineyards of Italy, we could all feel everybody's free, joyous spirits and creative

natures. Because everyone was in a theatrical mood, with the drama heightened during various photo shooting sessions, one couldn't

help but follow the crowd! This journey was not simply an in-depth study of wines, but also gave us benefit of witnessing the full performance of

different facets of human nature.

Trip highlights included: the debut of 2016 trendy fashions; doing boring morning exercises; Alps mountain 'Sherlock Holmes' three female detectives at the Alps mountain range; "a romantic couple's" celebration of their romance, heedless of all others; the trip's tall, super-handsome drivers and an annual birthday party celebrating the gossip lions' foursome. Most important was the companionship of loyal and fun-loving friends. Wow!

It was truly marvellous - hope to see you in Italy next year!

12 PAPER MAGAZINE cover story

As summer began in June this year, Hainan Airlines announced that it was starting direct flights from Beijing to Boston; in July and August, the airline increased the frequency of flights from four to seven departing per week. The reason? No, these Chinese visitors were not particularly enamoured of the long-favoured Massachusetts holiday destinations of the East Coast elite: Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket or the quaint little New England towns dotting the coast of Cape Cod.

The latest most sought-after holiday hot spot for Chinese students and their parents? Harvard University.

Reputed cerebral heavyweights Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), along with other Boston-area schools, such as Boston University and Tufts University, are now attracting visiting Chinese students and their families in such large numbers that the airline felt compelled to add flights. As for the schools, they are now organizing separate tours designed exclusively for Chinese visitors.

The surge in interest underscores both the prestige of obtaining a degree from Boston-area colleges as well as the growing ambitions - and affluence - of Chinese families invested in a single child. The number of Chinese students in the greater Boston area has almost tripled to 10,913 in 2013 from 3,800 in 2009. The growth nationally of the number of Chinese students in the US has more than doubled, according to the Institute of International Education in New York. Chinese now make up the largest segment of foreign students in the US at 27 percent

Harvard University has recently retained its number one spot on the Times Higher Education’s world reputation ranking of universities, with US institutions taking eight of the top 10 positions. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stanford follow to make up the top three. Cambridge and Oxford in the UK are both down one place on last year’s rankings which puts them in fourth and fifth place respectively. The University of California, Berkeley, Princeton, Yale, California Institute of Technology and the University of California, Los Angeles take the remaining places in the top 10.

The US, with 46 institutions in the ranking's top 100, is named as an “undisputed superpower when it comes to university brands” by the creators of the list.

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2014 employ the world's largest invitation-only academic opinion survey to provide the definitive list of the top 100 most powerful global university brands. A spin-off of the annual Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the reputation league table is based on nothing more than subjective judgement - but it is the considered

expert judgement of senior, published academics - the people best placed to know the most about excellence in universities.

According to Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, “Made in USA is a very important brand. It represents educational quality, opportunity, and an open-and merit-based admissions process that differs from China’s.”

Another survey, by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), also named Harvard at the top of seven of its eight criteria, including quality of education, alumni employment, influence, and broad impact. While the 2,000-university list represents schools from across the globe, eight of the CWUR's top 10 universities are in the U.S. These include (in order): Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Columbia, UC-Berkeley, University of Chicago, Princeton and Yale. The other two top 10 schools — the University of Cambridge (4th) and the University of Oxford (5th)— are in the U.K.The CWUR is based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and claims to be "the only global university ranking that measures the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions."

Made in the USAWith the strong “Made in USA” brand, it is hardly surprising then that international student enrollment is on the rise at U.S. colleges. In total, 764,495 international students were enrolled at colleges and universities across the United States during the 2011-2012 school year, up 5.7 percent from the previous year, according to a November 2012 report from the Institute of International Education. The U.S. News Best Colleges rankings can help prospective American and international students refine their list of target schools in the United States, but some of the world's best universities can be found outside the U.S. as well.

14 PAPER MAGAZINE cover story

Global EducationChina, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany and France all attract more than 100,000 international students each year, according to IIE data. Latin America, the Middle East and other parts of Asia have also seen an uptick in international student enrollment over the past decade, according to a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

One explanation for the trend toward international education: an "exploding demand for higher education worldwide," the OECD notes. Studying in a foreign country - whether for a semester, a year or for an entire degree - also helps prepare students to enter a high-tech and highly global economy, says Mr. Goodman.

Executives at multinational corporations might work in nine or 10 different countries throughout their career. Those who stay closer to home will likely still work with people from other cultures on a regular basis, says Goodman, who co-authored "A Student Guide to Study Abroad."

Sorting out where to study and why can be a multipronged equation.

For some, language is a primary factor. Students either want to learn in their native language or become fluent in another. Others want to gain business expertise abroad in order to get a leg up in an increasingly competitive workforce.

Many international students also choose where to study based on where they hope to start their careers, says Daniel Obst, IIE's deputy vice president of international partnerships in higher education. Whatever the motive to study overseas, each major region has something to offer students bent on studying overseas.

Go West - To EuropeThe United Kingdom alone is home to some of the world's best universities. University of Cambridge and University of Oxford, both in England, and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland excel in literature, English and creative writing. Each college has educated its fair share of the literary greats, including T.S. Elliot, Sylvia Plath, C.S. Lewis and many others. International students accounted for 18.6 percent of total higher ed enrollment in the U.K. in 2010-2011, according to IIE.

Students can venture outside of the U.K. and still get a great education in Europe. Schools such as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Ecole Normale Superieure de Paris, the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and Ruprecht-Karls-Universitat Heidelberg in Germany also have strong global reputations.

East is Best - Stay in AsiaStudents from China, India and South Korea account for 52 percent of the 4.1 million international students worldwide, according to the OECD. But the region has also emerged as a top destination for foreign students. Schools in Japan, South Korea and Singapore - as well as China’s own Peking University - have prominently figured in the world’s top university rankings.

Foreign investors visiting China usually receive a personal introduction to clean energy-or at least its importance. With every breath, one is reminded that China relies on coal for 65 to 70 percent of its energy needs-40

percent above the world average-and leads the world in carbon emissions. The latest annual environmental report revealed that acid rain fell upon 44 percent of Chinese cities. If China is serious about improving air quality, then coal and carbon energy will need to be replaced by renewable clean energy, namely wind, solar, hydropower, biomass and other viable alternatives such as geothermal and ocean energy.

Globally, clean energy investments in 2013 still trailed investment into fossil fuel by US$43 billion. Last year marked the first time ever that China invested more in renewable energy than Europe, and thereby, led the world. Though compared to the year before, total investment was down in several countries around the world: China by 6 percent to $54.2 billion; Europe by 42 percent to $55 billion; the U.S. by 9 percent to US$36 billion; India by 15 percent to $6 billion; and Brazil by a whopping 55 percent to $3 billion-its lowest since 2005. Exceptionally, Japan’s solar boom helped to drive an 80 percent jump in renewable energy investment to US$29 billion in 2013.

China has also built the world’s largest renewable energy capacity of 191 GW. In 2013, the country installed a record 12.1 GW of solar and 14 GW of wind energy capacity. Its stated goals for 2014 includes 14 GW of new solar capacity and 18 GW of new wind capacity.

China aims to increase the share of renewable energy (excluding natural gas and nuclear) in its overall energy profile from 9 percent in 2009 to 15 percent or more by 2020:

Dezan Shira & Associates is a specialist foreign direct investment practice, providing corporate establishment, business advisory, tax advisory and compliance, accounting, payroll, due diligence and financial review services to multinationals investing in emerging Asia. Since its establishment in 1992, the firm has grown into one of Asia’s most versatile full-service consultancies with operational offices across China, Hong Kong, India, Singapore and Vietnam as well as liaison offices in Italy and the United States.

So, where are the opportunities for foreign investment?

Hydropower would appear the obvious answer. China is already home to a fifth of the world’s hydropower capacity and half of its largest dams. The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze, the world’s largest, generates 22.5 GW-about 14 percent of China’s total hydropower and 1 percent of its total energy. Moreover, China aims to add 15 GW of hydropower per year. Currently, the government is focused on building large dams on the Yangtze and Yellow rivers and their tributaries, such as the Jinsha. The latter is the site of the Xiangjiaba Dam-with eight giant 800 MW turbines, the largest in the world. These projects require capital, long investment horizons, and household relocation projects suitable only for bulk investment banks and MNCs.

Other hydropower investors in China have focused on smaller dams scattered between Yunnan and Fujian. One such firm is CHC (China Hydroelectric Corporation) with 25 dams generating 0.5 GW (518MW). In 2011, during the sell-off of U.S. listed Chinese stocks, CHC fell about 90 percent, resulting in a shareholder revolt that forced out the founder and CEO. Despite this, the company continued to suffer at the mercy of rainfall, and from tariffs imposed by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), resulting in a string of uncontrollable losses. After investment cuts allowed the company to return to a positive cash flow, CHC announced in 2014 that it would merge with clean energy fund NewQuest.

Wind energy in China is currently over capacity, with little room for expansion. Domestic wind farms are prevalent in Inner Mongolia and Yunnan, with few other installation destinations available, except abroad. OECD markets are now sensitive to China underselling their own industries, driving China-based exporters to South America and Africa, where wind power can compete with coal. But the wind energy sector may be headed for a capacity correction much like the solar industry of two years ago.

China recently invested massive resources into producing solar cells for the rest of the world, especially Germany - which currently derives about 4.5 percent of its electricity needs from solar power, and aims to produce at least 80 percent of its energy via renewables by 2050 under its Energiewende policy. China’s solar industry then over-expanded and overleveraged, and when German subsidies moderated, Chinese producers needed to be rescued by the PRC government. With reduced leverage and lowered production capacity, China’s solar industry now seems to be stabilizing.

It also helped that in September 2013, the NDRC established a 0.42 RMB/KWH subsidy for distributed PV (photovoltaic) units. Previously, the Central Government had subsidized clean energy equipment producers only on a project basis-a form of “cost-push.” Now, it has introduced distributed consumption, a “demand-pull.” But given that China has already cut capacity to strengthen pricing and fight domestic firm bankruptcies, it is unlikely to welcome additional foreign investment in solar power, unless it remains committed to pushing solar power in Tibet and displacing over 160,000 tons of burning coal.

Biomass, plant-based fuel, has been a focus of China’s large-scale SOEs such as CNPC (China National Petroleum Corporation), Sinopec, CNOOC (China National Offshore Oil Corporation), COFCO (China Oil and Food Import and Export Corporation) and others-some of which are cooperating with European technology leaders in this regard.

Natural gas represents a non-renewable but clean source of energy, contributing

4 percent of China’s total energy needs. Consumption first outstripped supply in 2009 and has since continued to do so. As a result, China has considered overland natural gas pipelines from the west (including Central Asia, Myanmar, and Russia) and imported LNG from the coast. Global leaders in natural gas such as Shell have been active in China. Opportunities for large-scale foreign investment are to be found in exploration, production, and pipeline development in areas where domestic competition is limited (e.g., the Ordos, Sichuan and Talim basins).

Investment into China’s clean energy sector may be “hot” but related political issues-such as domestic grid rates and dumping allegations by foreign countries-have been known to “cool off ” returns, beaconing a range of consultants to sell advice without risking principal.

Nevertheless, for serious investors, three opportunities remain glaringly open. Real estate developers can build “greener” offices and homes-powered by anything other than coal. Secondly and on the supply side, the challenge is to build a more efficient electrical grid through which to move electricity. Thirdly, innovation in lowering vehicle emissions is needed to clean up vehicle pollution. In a word, efficiency on both the demand and supply sides will remain an important theme for successful investors.

An ancient whaling port, now designated a National Historic District, this exclusive enclave has extremely strict landmark and preservation regulations dictating the shape, colors and shingles of all structures and which effectively prohibit national chains from opening (although somehow, a Ralph Lauren boutique has managed to escape censure). Grey-washed seaside Cape Cod cottages, old whaling captains’ mansions, among the priciest real estate in the United States, perch next to historic harbours and contain quaint inns, preppy boutiques and upscale dining delights. Yet for all its swank, it is still possible to catch the island’s working-class spirit; linger over pints at one of the many harborside pubs, especially at sundown, and watch the local sailors and fishing boats return to port.

Whether visiting for the day or staying for a week - here are ten things you can’t miss on Nantucket.

Windswept beaches, sand dunes, blinking lighthouses, cobblestoned streets and a charming pace of life await on the “Little Grey Lady”, Nantucket, a 50-square mile island off the southern coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Koenigsegg: The King of SupercarsKoenigsegg Automotive AB is a Swedish manufacturer of high-performance sports cars, also known as supercars or hyper-cars, based in Ängelholm. Since the factory is located on the still-active Ängelholm airport, clients can arrive by private jet next to the factory.

The company was founded in 1994 by Swedish entrepreneur by Christian von Koenigsegg when he was only 22 years old. As a five year old toddler, Mr. Von Koenigsegg became infatuated with cars after watching the Norwegian stop-motion animated movie Pinchcliffe Grand Prix. When he was six years old, Mr. Koenigsegg drove a go-kart for the first time in his life, an experience he vividly recalls as "one of the best days" of his life. His first summer job was at a Suzuki dealership outside Stockholm, cleaning cars.

Many years of development and prototyping led to the company's first street-legal production car delivery in 2002 when its first customer took delivery of a red CC8S at the Geneva Auto Show; four more cars were built that year. In 2004, the new CCR was unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show; only 14 were ever made.

In 2006, Koenigsegg introduced the CCX with custom engines in order to meet worldwide regulations for road use. Koenigsegg is the only supercar and low-volume manufacturer to pass European pedestrian impact tests. The CCX is street-legal in most countries.

In 2007 Koenigsegg premiered the CCXR, a biofuel/flexfuel version of the CCX. The car features a modified engine, fuel system, and engine management system that enables the car to run on regular gas or ethanol, and any mixture between these two fuels. Ethanol has a higher octane rating compared to regular fuel and has an internal cooling effect on the combustion chamber, which allows increased performance.

In 2009 Koenigsegg released a special edition car called the "Trevita" Meaning "three whites", the Trevita has a body made entirely of Koenigsegg's proprietary material consisting of diamond-coated carbon fibre. The Trevita is based on the CCXR, and therefore produces 1,018 hp when running on biofuel. That same year, the CCXR was chosen by Forbes as “one of the ten most beautiful cars in history”.

Contributed by Dr. Clive FerminDr. Fermin is a medical physician, self-confessed speed freak and gearhead, who has named his sons after Formula 1 racing champions. When not in a hospital operating theatre, he regularly burns rubber on go-karting zones.

At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, Koenigsegg introduced the “Agera”, which means "take action/act". The Agera features a Koenigsegg-developed 5.0-litre variable geometry twin-turbo V8 engine capable of 910 hp, coupled to a newly developed 7-speed gearbox. The Agera's design recalls previous Koenigsegg supercars, but adds many special new features, such as a wider front track, new styling and aero features, and a new interior; including a new lighting technique called "Ghost Light," which consists of microscopic holes to hide the interior lighting until turned on, and then shines through what appears to be solid aluminum. The Agera has been in production since late 2010 and that year, won BBC Top Gear’s “Hypercar of the Year” Award.

Such devotion to design, craftsmanship and engineering does not come easy or cheap. Koenigsegg supercars are bespoke - handcrafted and made-to-order - and come with matching hefty USD million-dollar price tags. And they haven’t forgotten about China.

In 2012, Koenigsegg announced that it would be entering the Chinese market in close cooperation with FFF Automobile, China’s most famous super car broker and Koenigsegg dealer, by developing the One: 1 only for China, so named because it makes one horsepower per kilo, the fastest car ever (0-60 in 2.5 seconds). The supercars were finally spotted arriving in Beijing earlier this year so if you just happen to have an extra USD $2 million dollars lying around, you maybe one of only five very lucky guys in China who may own one.

MuseTRENDREPORT

A spring fashion trend that has survived a welcome transition to fall is the bomber jacket. Whether in silk, cotton, jersey or satin, in florals, stripes or heavily embellished, it’s a sporty chic way to start layering up for the coming cool season. Bombers away!

Originally from Kansas, after studying fashion design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, Jeremy Scott launched his own attention-grabbing, irreverent label in 1997, often cited as examples of lowbrow culture, using streetwear, graphic cartoon prints and abstracts, transformed into high art. Often more conceptual than wearable, the designs change drastically every season with the evolution of Mr. Scott’s whimsy. The most recognisable was his bestselling collaboration with Adidas, the gangster/angelic wing design on the hip hop hi-top sneakers. Most recently appointed creative director at Moschino, Mr. Scott has been singled out by Karl Lagerfeld as the only designer who could possibly succeed him at Chanel.

Rory McIlroy was born on May 4, 1989, in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland, the only child of Gerry and Rosie McIlroy. His father introduced him to golf when he could barely walk and the little boy soon hit a 40-yard drive at the age of 2, and scored his first hole-in-one at age 9. In order to support his son’s golf education, Mr. McIlroy’s father worked

three jobs and his mother worked extra night shifts. At age 16, Mr. McIlroy himself left school in order to focus on the game.

With a record-breaking amateur run under his belt, Mr. McIlroy focused on setting records in the professional arena. After a strong start at the U.S. Masters in 2011, M. McIlroy famously choked and went from a four-shot lead to a heartbeaking 15th place. He came roaring back in the U.S. Open, however, by winning his first major title. His score of 268 set a record for the lowest 72-hole total—a record previously held by only Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

When he's not on the road competing, Mr. McIlroy lives in Carryduff in County Down, Northern Ireland, where he has a custom practice facility. He is an ambassador for UNICEF Ireland (also known as the Irish National Committee for UNICEF). In 2011, Mr. McIlroy began dating Caroline Wozniacki, Denmark’s reigning tennis princess and together, they were deemed the “golden couple of sports”. The couple announced their engagement on New Year's Eve 2013, only to break up earlier this year, just months before their planned November wedding

Dismal love life aside, 2014 is a good year for Mr. McIlroy as he won the 143rd British Open championship and sealed his place in history with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to win their third major title by the age of 25. He has continued his winning streak by recently capturing the 2014 U.S. PGA Championship, his fourth major, just one stroke ahead of Phil Mickelson, bringing him currently to No. 1 in golf ’s world rankings.

Honey Beam’s EateryNot Ho-Hum!

The exotic hybrids that comprise the otherwise straightforward menu at Honey Beam’s, the hip, new Korean-style eatery in Zhujiang New Town, remind us a lot of Los Angeles and the ubiquitous food

trucks dotting the city’s more ethnically diverse neighborhoods. Remember umami burgers, anyone? Then, the flat screen TV on the wall flashes Honey Beams’ own TV commercial featuring two guys out on a road in the middle of nowhere, one of them ecstatically accepting a taco from a passing, you guessed it...food truck.

At Honey Beam’s, the specialties include such exoticisms as Korean-style grilled tacos and burritos and kimchi quesadillas. The important question is: does it work? We’re pleased to report, that although the blend of flavours and spices may be sometimes new, sometimes unusual, often exciting, to our untutored palates - at the end of the day, in a funny (good-funny) kind of way, it

all DOES work, some more than others. The food is prepared with daily all-fresh ingredients in a stark white open kitchen visible through extensive plate glass windows. Honey Beam’s uses premium

certified meat from South Korea and, to maintain freshness and quality, prepares the day’s ingredients for sale every morning and stops using that day’s ingredients by closing time in the evening.

Even though Honey Beam’s styles itself as a Korean grilled taco place, we tried both the tacos and burritos and were more partial to the burritos (RMB 48); its spicy kick got us going, as did the spicy fries, with

cheese. We were at first hesitant to try the kimchi quesadillas (RMB 59) and were pleasantly surprised that it is actually yummy! It must be one of the bestsellers as it was sold out on two out of three

occasions that we visited Honey Beam’s. For those looking for more heft to their meals, Honey Beam’s also serves reasonably priced sets, ranging from RMB 35 to RMB 58, where one

can get a fix on marinade short ribs, chicken drumsticks, shrimps, gochujang pork bulgogi, sitting on tortilla wraps and accompanied by kimchi salsa, coleslaw, guacamole and many more options. Of course, one can also be plain vanilla boring and just order the breakfast set of scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and tomato (RMB 50).

The vibe is decidedly L.A. casual - and not in a snooty way but with stylish graphics, clean lines, simple furnishings such as high stools and a communal table, and flows fluidly into a hip-casual boutique next door, by the same owner. The youthful staff are pleasantly smiling and smartly presented, with subtle K-pop style aesthetics. Overall,

we’d say Honey Beam’s is definitely not boring or average and makes an unexpectedly excellent new addition to Guangzhou’s informal dining scene.

Honey Beam’s is open from 11 am to 11 pm daily. No. 27 Hua Li Lu, Zhujiang New Town, Tianhe District, Guangzhou

Lazy Guys Bar is open nightly from 6 pm to 2 am. Building 105-106, Overseas Chinese Paradise Street (Hua Qiao Le Yuan), Yuexiu District.

Looking for a clear road sign that leads you right up to the porch of Lazy Guys Bar? Sorry, there’s none but beams of green lights slip through green plants at the front door. Want to have a look at about how many types of beers and snacks they serve? Sorry, food doesn’t have a say here

and there’s no such a thing as a “menu at hand” but there is a low-profile magnetic pad on the ice box. Also, the owner himself or his two cute staff members are patient and professional in introducing Lazy Guys bar to thirsty customers.

The guy behind the bar is actually not so lazy, in fact, far from it. During a home stay in a Canadian craft brewer’s house two years ago, hardworking, talented and ambitious young owner Rocky Wong apprenticed and swiftly mastered the science of brewing craft beers. Spotting an opportunity upon his return to China, Mr. Wong then proudly opened his craft beer-oriented “Lazy Guys Bar”, as a perfect counterpoint to the mass-produced lagers proliferating in the country.

Bottles of various beers drunk by Rocky himself are displayed behind the bar counter. Faded photos of breweries throughout the world hang in frames on the wall downstairs, right above a couple of chubby national flag-pattern cushions and wooden stools. Upstairs, there’s botanically-adorned loos, more comfy furnishings and an American pool table where friendly games frequently take place.

But no doubt, it’s all about beer here. Rocky explained that of about 280 flavors he has experimented with and succeeded in producing, four stood out as the most popular: Wheat and Barley, Pale Ale and Dark Ale, all made of authentic Australian malt, water, hop and yeast in his own brewery.

With the Pale Ale, it’s amazing how Rocky has managed to balance the bitterness in the gold-plated red malty body whilst the entrance of Dark Ale captures taste buds with an ever-growing note of roasted coffee. To sum up, Lazy Guys Bar is really about appreciating beers on a whole another level.

A Steel Magnolia: Helen Leung

Page 37: September 2014 - neo-ads.com · "Swan Lake" by the Russian State Ballet The beloved Tchaikovsky ballet as performed by the Russian State Ballet, one of the leading Russian ballet

As General Manager of Guangzhou Marriott Hotel Tianhe, Helen Leung is that rare breed of hotelier, a steel magnolia and iron-willed female leader who has achieved the pinnacle of male-dominated hotel senior

management. During a recent chat with Paper, she shares key learnings from her approximately 15 years in the hotel industry, thoughts on female leadership and her dream vacation:

What event/person/situation in your past was instrumental in your decision to become a hotelier?

I had studied computers and knew that I was never going to be in IT, so after finishing school, I worked in an advertising agency and then a public relations agency. Some of our clients then were hotels. Eventually, I made the decision to transition from agency side over to client side. I realized that I enjoyed the hotel industry because I like communicating with people and I saw that there was huge potential and plenty of opportunities for career growth, especially in China.

So that decision to change industries also came with a decision to change locations, from Hong Kong to China. Of course I initially experienced culture shock. Hong Kong has a very fast, very straightforward way of communicating and doing things. In China, I had to adapt very quickly to a different way of accomplishing things. But that decision changed my life - now, I’m working for a great hotel company, work in a really nice setting everyday, where I’m surrounded by colleagues whom I really like.

As one of a rare breed of female general managers in the hotel industry, the top management of which is still usually male-dominated - what advice could you share to other aspiring young women hoteliers still starting out in their careers?

I’m very fortunate that I work for Marriott where there is a tremendous focus on equal opportunity and there are an increasing number of women in senior management, including hotel general managers. To those young people who aspire to be senior managers someday, I would say:1. Put people first. This is one of Marriott’s core values and it is extremely important. The hotel industry has a high turn-over and a good leader knows how to value the support of the team. You only have 24 hours in a day and it is impossible to do all the things you need to do at once all by yourself. So take care of your people.2. Have a long-term plan. It is very easy to get busy just putting out fires and getting caught up in the small details of everyday life. You must have a vision for the long term about what you want to be, where you want to go and how you intend to get there. And no matter how busy you get everyday, as a leader, it is crucial to stay focused and stay true to your vision.

It seems that there is extreme pressure on women these days - especially on successful, powerful women rather than on successful, powerful men in similar positions. Would you agree and why do you think this is so?

When a woman assumes a senior, powerful leadership position - which is usually occupied by a man, people sometimes have a misperception.

Too often, people will doubt or ask questions: Is she tough enough? Will she work hard enough? Will she be able to handle it? Questions which are sometimes not fair because most people would not have doubts when a man assumes a leadership position.

So for a smart, successful, hardworking woman, being in a position of authority is not enough. She has to prove that she can overcome those doubts, that she earned the right to assume that position because of her skills and experience, and sometimes, she may have to work twice as hard as a man in that same position. In

the hotel industry, female general managers have been receiving good feedback, for being detail-oriented, for emphasizing good communications and relationships with clients and employees.

Do you have a role model - if so, who is it and why?

It would have to be Bill Marriott. He has been very influential for me. For his solid beliefs, his integrity and his focus on people, on treating people well - which form the core values of the company he established 80 years ago. To me, he is the epitome of a real leader to emulate, somebody with a vision and good core values.

What are your proudest accomplishments, professionally and personally?

At work, I’m very proud of being the recipient of a 2015 award for leadership excellence. It is fantastic recognition from the company; it means we’re delivering on guest service, profitability to our owners and the satisfaction and happiness of our hotel employees. Guangzhou Marriott Hotel, Tianhe is a fairly new hotel, this is my first position as a hotel general manager and I’m very fortunate to be part of such a hotel and such a strong, wonderful team.

Personally, I’m a big believer in spending quality time with family and I’m proud that each year, I can take my parents to travel somewhere, to other countries or to other cities in China. To see them enjoying the pleasures of travel and spending time together as a family - this makes me happy.

What are your toughest challenges at the moment?

People. There’s lots of competition coming into Guangzhou; expectation from guests is increasing so it is crucial to deliver consistently good service. Turn-over is high and recruitment is tough; young people these days have become very choosy and some have the perception that a service industry job lacks prestige or status. Some don’t want to earn their promotions and want to have a senior position immediately, even though it is clear that they are not yet ready for it.

Competition. More and more new hotels are coming up in the city, which means that we have to be clear in communicating and establishing our market positioning. We have to make more of an effort at client retention and always have to be innovative and creative in offering something new, something interesting with our product and service offerings.

Lack of a personal life! (laughs) This hotel is still like a baby; you can’t really leave it alone yet. You have to be devoted, make sure you’re around and hands-on, to make sure that it grows properly and well and that everything is running smoothly. Unfortunately, it doesn’t leave much time for anything else!

If you could have your dream vacation - money and time no object, what would you do, where would you go, with whom and why?

A dream vacation would definitely mean no early wake-up calls, no scheduled appointments or fixed itinerary and ALL the time in the world to do anything you want! I would love to go to Italy with a group of my closest girlfriends and just take the time to truly enjoy the beautiful pleasures that the country has to offer...relax, see the gorgeous sights, go to concerts, drink wine and eat delicious, fresh food, go shopping, lots of shopping!
