THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION On August 24, 2014, the history committee started filming and documenting the rich history of Olivet Baptist Church. Organized by Victor Calbaltera and Amber Iwamoto, the group,

consisting of members from the 1960’s, gathered together to share pictures, stories, and memories of Olivet’s past.

Follow up sessions will be scheduled in October, so keep on the lookout. If you or anyone you know would like to be part of this event, please contact the church office.

Dear Friends:

We have an active and committed congregation

whose support is readily visible in so many of

Olivet’s ministries. I’m always astounded by the

energy and passion that you give to each

endeavor. This is especially true when we are

given the opportunity to serve in the name of

Christ.

During the month of September, the church will be

actively engaged in two areas - our Sunday School

Kick-off and the 2015 Stewardship

Campaign. Since Jason will be speaking to you

about Sunday School let me spend a moment to

talk about Stewardship.

The emphasis will be placed on our role as

“stewards” before God, our Creator and our

Redeemer. As persons created in God’s image, He

calls us to consider what it means for us to live

based upon gratitude for all He has done and will

do for us. In fact, our response in faith to follow

Him signifies to all that He makes His claim upon

our lives. It also denotes our desire to grow in our

relationship to God.

Entrusted by God with responsibility to “invest”

ourselves for the sake of His kingdom, we find

ourselves with many choices of becoming engaged

with “mission of God” in this world. One of the

primary avenues for joining God’s mission

continues to be our participation in the ministries

to which God has called Olivet Baptist Church.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “LOVE

GOD WITHOUT RESERVATION.” This is

based on 2 Corinthians 8.9, “For you know the

grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, who for our sakes

became poor so that we by His poverty might

become rich.”

The goal is to give to each member a clearer

understanding of how richly blessed we are as

believers and members of Olivet Baptist

Church. But this does not come without cost. God

gave up His Son to make eternal life available to

us.

While I’m not in any way suggesting that we can

ever compare our sacrifices to the sacrifice of

Christ, I want to tell you that many in our Olivet

family, past and present, have given and continue

give, the best that they have to the Master.

B U I L D I N G FA I T H I N Y O U R C O M M U N I T Y

Often, by His grace, God calls us to step back,

re-evaluate our lives, and once more commit

ourselves to Him. He calls us again and again

to “seek first His kingdom.” On Sunday,

September 28, we will be taking the

opportunity to consecrate to the Lord as

“living sacrifices” offered to Him. As part of

our worship experience, you will be invited to

express that commitment through the use of a

pledge card. Everyone will be encouraged to

bring his/her card forward at the conclusion of

the service. If you are uncomfortable with that

visible expression, you can always just return

your card to the office at a convenient time.

The use of the card serves as a tangible way

for us to give public testimony to our desire to

serve the Lord at Olivet Baptist

Church. Whether in the willingness to give in

ministry or in the provision of financial

resources, both elements represent our desire

to consecrate ourselves to our gracious

God. We would ask that you prayerfully

consider both parts of your act of grateful

service and how God might be leading you. If

you are unable to attend on September 28, we

would ask that you return your card by placing

it in the offering plate on any Sunday or

dropping it by the office.

May I ask that you pray for our Finance

Committee as well as others who will be

working to make our Stewardship Campaign

not only meaningful, but most importantly,

faithful to our Lord’s leadership.

Sincerely,

Pastor Tim

Be sure to follow us on social

media for the most up-to-date

information, events, and

outreach opportunities.

Ogenki Desuka? お元気ですか? “God’s Plan Brings You Prosperity and the Future You Hope for”

Jeremiah 29:11-14 “I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not

disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for. Then you will call to me. You will come and pray

to me, and I will answer you. You will seek me, and you will find me because you will seek me with all

your heart. Yes, I say, you will find me, and I will restore you to your land. I will gather you from

every country and from every place to which I have scattered you, and I will bring you back to the land

from which I had sent you away into exile. I, the Lord, have spoken.” (TEV)

The Bible tells us that God’s plans are to bring us prosperity, and not disaster, plans are

to bring about the future we hope for. These verses are talking about the captives in

Babylon who will be freed from all the agonies and sufferings. It was a time for the

Israelites to be patient and to exercise endurance. God told them to build houses and

settle down. He continues to tell them to work for the good of the cities in the foreign

land.

We may sometimes come to a place or time where we feel awkward and not

accustomed to; just like in a foreign land. We may feel like running away from that

place but there are times that we cannot escape. For those times, God encourages us to

be patient, settle down, and to work for the good of these places. God says that His

plans are to bring prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future we hope

for.

God says that we will find Him when we seek Him with all our heart. God will answer

us when we come and pray to Him. “Come and pray” demands action on our part. We

must be willing to come to God and pray. God answers us as we go to Him with prayer.

We are to move closer to where God is. Be near to His presence. As we are present with

God, we will know how much He loves us, planning to bring prosperity for us and not

disaster, plans to bring about the future we hope for. When we are in His presence, our

hope may be closely related to His. In Christ’s love, Makito

Musical Concert by “The Silver Foxes” Olivet’s Senior Ohana enjoyed a special treat on June 19, 2014. They were delighted with the performance of “The Silver Foxes.” Mr. Hans Krause is the Musical Director of the group of nine performers and assistants. Together they presented a program of favorite melodies, many of them from the 50s and 60s, some lively, other romantic or nostalgic, but all familiar to the group’s forty-six seniors, who made up the attentive audience. Added to the enjoyment were the different costumes worn by the vocalist appropriate to their song, the wonderful commentator, who introduced the performer and provided information about the melody, and the great sound system. At the end of the concert, the entertainers were introduced. The seniors were pleased to learn that all in the group had retired from successful careers and had found personal satisfaction in belonging to a musical group who brought entertainment and joy to others by sharing their love for music through their voices and their talents. Karen’s Kitchen prepared delicious spaghetti and served it with French bread, tossed green salad, fruit salad and dessert, which was enjoyed by the group.

A Unique Experience at Iolani

Sportwear in July

Olivet’s two trusty buses, plus a private auto, transported 31 eager senior adults to Iolani Sportwear for a tour of the historic facility tucked away on Kona Street in Kakaako. Carla Kawakami, co-owner with her husband Lloyd of the thriving aloha attire manufacturing business, was our gracious guide and hostess. She shared the history of Iolani Sportswear, which was founded more than 60 years ago by her father-in-law, Kauai native Keiji Kawakami and his wife Edith. The company was formed on the basic business philosophy of hard work, honesty and a commitment to producing an excellent product. Through the generations, the Kawakamis have also been dedicated to taking care of their employees. Today, Iolani is one of the oldest and most respected clothing manufacturers in Hawaii. Their creations are classic and chic, comfortable, cool and timeless. Our group enjoyed the walk-through of the factory, observing the fabric patters being created and the finished fabric being hand cut for sewing into garments, and then the completed pieces being pressed and inspected for distribution to the retailers. Especially memorable was the interactive workshop where each senior completed coloring a chosen design that was transferred (in seven seconds!) onto a tote bag or a t-shirt. What a fun activity that was! Carla served an island-style lunch catered by Side Street Inn. Iolani treated the group to a dessert of Kauai Kitchen cookies, another Kawakami ohana enterprise. There was time to browse and shop in the Iolani showroom before departure.

Seeking God’s Vision

From March of this year, a small group of members have been meeting, praying and talking story. It has been a wonderful experience walking with these brothers and sisters as we prayerfully seek God’s specific vision for Olivet. The first few meetings were spent reflecting on who we are as a church. This involved looking into the past at who we were and the present in who we have become, followed by discussion of the current needs and challenges.

In the last couple of meetings, we were able to explore some ideas about the future. Here are two major areas that were discussed:

Connection/Community Looking back at Olivet’s history we see that there was deep connection and sense of community. This seemed to be the strength of the church. People lived life together. Today, society has changed so much around us and “community” has shrunk to the size of our immediate families. Life is not lived together in the same way that it was before. Our church family is limited to Sunday interactions. So what do we do? Small groups We discussed the potential of starting small groups in areas where members lived. Two families will be-gin a pilot program this September and we will see how it could grow to multiple communities around the island. Affinity groups Groups with shared interests are a great way to build community. Hiking, fishing, surfing, arts and crafts, cooking, or whatever your interests are. We would love to see our church family come together and live life together in the things you are interested in. Some already do this; we would like to encourage more of it. Work and role of the Holy Spirit Whatever the reason, there is not an overflow of testifying of what the Spirit is doing in the everyday life of the church and the life of the individual believer. We serve a living and active God! What has God been doing and how has the Spirit been moving in and through you? Testimony We hope to see more testifying with each other of how the Spirit is actively moving in your life. Is there change, growth and stretching? We look forward to more sharing, both formally in service and infor-mally in our conversations. Teaching We are all still learning and experiencing God’s goodness, no matter where we are in our faith walk. We plan to have more teaching about the Holy Spirit’s presence, both from the pulpit, in Sunday school and in Bible study. This is such an exciting time for Olivet. Per-haps we are in a time of transition as many of us pass along the responsibilities to the next generation of those who will carry on Olivet’s journey with God. Please continue to pray for us as we continue to seek God’s vision and di-rection, and support the leadership that en-courages us to walk steadfast in His will! - Terrance

Lead by Example Being a parent is frightening! Much of what you do and say will be mimicked by one or more of your children. If you lose your temper with them, you will see them lose their temper with oth-ers. Recently Aubrey starting responding to me with the phrase, “That does not even make sense!” The funniest part is that phrase often doesn’t make sense in the context. “Aubrey, if you want a snack, you have to eat your dinner first.” She replies with a grin and chuckling voice, “That does not even make sense!” Where in the world did she learn this??? Emily said, “I say that all the time to them.” Just this morning as we were getting ready for the day Aubrey searched for her belt and her watch. After she put them on she said, “Look Dad, I’m just like you!” Good or bad, our kids will learn from us. It becomes critical that we know how to teach them. It’s an interesting dynamic; as we teach our children, we learn ourselves. Next month on October 24th and 25th, Chap Bettis will be at Oli-

vet Baptist Church teaching on how we can disciple our chil-

dren. This is a conference not only for parents, but for all believ-

ers as we are a church family and we are all responsible for the

discipleship of the children here at Olivet Baptist Church.

Please join us for this special event. The cost is just $4 to pay for

the booklet which you will keep. I hope to see you there! -jason

Purpose Statement:

As servants within the worship ministry, we aim to worship God through serving and ministering to the members of Olivet Baptist Church. As a ministry we commit to offering all that we have: our hearts, minds, spirits, voices, hands, feet, and gifts and talents so that we may be used by God to bring Him glory. We commit to preparing ourselves spiritually as well as honing the gifts that God has given us so that what we offer the Lord may be holy and pleasing to Him. As a ministry team, we recognize that we are one team operating with many parts. We commit to encourage one another and serve each other in love and grace. It is our goal to work together seamlessly as one team so that through the leadership and empowerment of the Holy Spirit, we may provide a sacred space of worship for all who walk through the doors of Olivet Baptist Church. If you are a member here at OBC and this resonates within you, I would encourage you to contact me to see where we can plug you in within the worship ministry! Where is God calling you to serve Him? What unique role is He asking you to fulfill? Prayerfully consider how God is asking you to give of yourself to further His ministry and His Kingdom! God’s blessings,

In light of our stewardship emphasis this month, I would like to encourage all of you to think about how you can offer up your time and talents to serve the Lord! God has given each of us unique gifts that are meant to edify and build up one another. What are your gifts and passions that you can use to serve God here at Olivet Baptist Church? The worship ministry leadership team recently met and solidified our purpose statement as a ministry. Our purpose statement is based on Romans 12:1, 3-6: A Living Sacrifice 12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Humble Service in the Body of Christ 3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. ~Romans 12:1, 3-6

As the children have been learning about school and making changes, preschoolers can

sometimes have trouble identifying their feelings and without words, can resort to using

their hands to communicate feelings they may not be aware of having.

Our suggestion for parents of preschoolers is to:

1. Sit down with your child to look through magazines for pictures of people in everyday

situations.

2. Focus on faces. Cut out pictures and glue or attach to a paper

3. Help your child label the feeling verbally or by writing it down on the paper.
