Dear Olivet Family and Friends: This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody,

and Nobody. There was an important job to be done. Everybody was sure

Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realized that

Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody

when Nobody did what Anybody could have

done!!

Love,

Pastor Tim

Whose job is it?

Reconnected

Well, my experiment failed. I was supposed to stay off of Facebook and Instagram for 2014. That didn’t last very long. I jumped back on Instagram soon after because I started working with college-aged adults. I still stayed off Facebook, but I did log in a few times throughout because I needed to get someone’s contact information. Then, last month I moved forward in starting a social media initiative for the church. At this point I decided, I might as well just log back in my personal account. I’m reconnected. Social media truly is amazing, both problematic and beneficial. It’s just the reality of how the world connects. This is not just a generational phenomenon, there’s a good chance your parents have a Facebook account (or your kid is refusing to acknowledge you have one!). I love the good ol’ days. I love simpler times. Person-

ally, I wish social media never existed. It does, and the

world connects through it. Truth is, to stay connected,

social media is important. Hopefully, it never takes the

place of personal interaction, but enriches it. - jason

Thank You Very Much for Your Prayers!

The Japan Mission Team is Back in Hawaii!

Romans 8:28 【TEV】: “We know that in all things God works for good

with those who love him, those whom he has called according to his

purpose.”

With your prayer support, the Japan Mission trip was so blessed by the

Lord through the Holy Spirit. We were able to visit over 10 different

locations of service and ministry in 10 days in Japan. Our Mission Team

always reminded ourselves that we are a family of God who love each

other. We understand that it is the best way to testify God’s love and mercy

to this world.

We met and worked with people of varying backgrounds and ages, from

children to the elders in Japan. It was a full time ministry experience for all

the mission team members. We have learned that “in all things God works

for good to those who love Him” is true as Romans 8:28 states. Now, pray

with us that those with whom we met and shared the love of Christ in Japan

would somehow find salvation and peace with God through Jesus Christ. I

am looking forward to sharing more about our mission trip later in the next

article.

In Christ’s love, Makito Watanabe Your Japanese Language Pastor

1. What would you describe as the best part of the mission trip? Chie: I was able to see different ministries and how God is working in each place in Japan. It was so nice to reconnect with people who I used to serve with at church in Japan and I was very encouraged. Roger: Our hosts were amazing. They prayed for us from the time they knew we were coming to Japan and during our entire time there. They went to great effort and expense to make us feel welcomed and planned our events so well. As a result, I felt we were able to accomplish much for God and our working together in ministry was such a joy. It made our parting moments so difficult and filled with heart felt emotions.

WE ASKED CHIE

WATANABE AND

ROGER HONDA TO

THE JAPAN MISSION

TRIP. HERE ARE

THEIR RESPONSES

Q&A

Chie: When I was talking to tsunami victims at temporary housing, I thanked God that I was

able to be there and share. Roger: We felt the Holy Spirit within our midst all the time but it was evident to me when we met strangers at the airport waiting to board the same flight with us. But even more so when Pastor Tim and I were sitting in the plane and a Japanese lady was in the middle seat between him and me. I thought I'd practice my Japanese so I asked her, "Eigo ga wakari-masu ka?" She replied in English, "A little." That started our conversation off. I knew for certain the Holy Spirit was present. I had a most enjoyable time speaking with her which made the 8 hour flight seem shorter. Before we landed, I introduced her to several mission team members and they gave her a pretty little card the team had made which had our church email address and name. Her name was Mrs. Oki and she said she was glad we met and talked.

4.Any other thoughts, prayers, praises you would like to share? Chie: I would like to ask prayer for people who try to recover from this disaster, especially for the health of children and Baptist workers who continuously visit people and share the love of God. Roger: Our mission team really worked hard, especially the ladies. The Masters Touch hula did an outstanding job. The hula and our Hawaiian gifts really warmed the hearts of the people we ministered to. It was unbelievable. Plus the personal testimonies shared by our team were so powerful that we could see that hearts were deeply moved by them and the people responded with words of gratitude. We also were so encouraged and impressed by the Christians in Japan. Once they've committed themselves to Christ, their devotion and loyalty to Christ is so strong and genuine. We were the ones who were blessed by their witness and love for Christ and His church. A recent Gallup Poll survey said that the percentage of Christians in Japan actually is about 4% of the population instead of the less than 1 % that has long been reported. Rev. Tomono commented that he feels God's Spirit is moving among the people of Japan. Let's continue to pray for the people of Japan!

3. Could you share with us a time when you felt the Spirit moving?

BONUS QUESTION: What was the best thing you ate on your trip? Roger: Sushi at a little sushi bar in Fujisawa not far from our hotel. Takako Okada kindly helped me order so I enjoyed everything I ate. It was so "oishii" (delicious) and cheap, too. Chie: Everything was so delicious in Japan but the best food that I ate was kuri gohan(chestnut rice), zukkini nitsuke and tuskemo (vegetable pickles) made by a lady at temporary housing. It was a surprise lunch from her.

2. What surprised you most on this

trip? Roger: There were several things that surprised me but one touched my heart so much. It happened at Tokiwadai Baptist Church. I had met Mr. & Mrs. Go in Oct. 1997 at the church on my first mission trip there and Mrs. Go was expecting a baby at the time I left Japan. Well, when I met Mrs. Go this time she said her son, Shuto (who was born soon after I left Japan and is now 17 years old) wanted to meet me. Mrs. Go had shown him a letter I had written and a photo of me. When we met, I learned that he had taken off from school that day just to meet me. I also learned he had an exam on the next day. What a surprise that was for me. I was very touched to say the least. Chie: I was more shocked than surprised that there are still many tsunami victims living in temporary housing and learned that almost 90 children are getting cancers from radiation. After I met tsunami victims and heard the stories and saw what happened with my eyes, I really felt that we need to pray for them.

What is your purpose?

Matthew 25:35-40 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to Me.’

We are closely approaching the

start of a new school year! The youth department is looking forward to the upcoming students in September! This summer, our theme passage of Scripture has been Matt. 5:14-16; 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” In line with this passage, we have been focusing on being intentional in the relationships we have with others to pray, witness, and exemplify the love of Christ to all with whom we come in contact. One Sunday morning we gathered together and made care packages for our neighbors living around the Church and passed them out (pictured right). Even though it was a bit out of their comfort zone, our youth were so brave and determined to love on our neighbors that morning! Another Sunday morning, we made a friends and family prayer wall. Each youth spent some time in prayer and reflection as they wrote out prayers for their friends and family members that don’t yet have a relationship with Jesus. With finger paint, they wrote the initials of the person they prayed over on the wall along with their prayer scroll taped next to it (pictured right). We have seen how God has placed us strategically in the schools, communities, even families that He has so that we can be His expression of love to all those around us! Will you partner in prayer over our youth as they

seek to be God’s light to those around them?
