and more!
September 2015
It is no secret, I am new to
pastoral ministries. Preaching
has been my greatest joy during
my time here at Colby. I have
put a great deal of thought into
what to preach and why a
particular message. The more I
have worked at preaching, the
more systematic I have become
and long range message
planning has become more and more important to me.
During August, guided by the Revised Common
Lectionary, we have taken a close look at Jesus’ message
regarding “The Bread of Life” in John chapter 6. I hope
you learned something and gained a closer insight into
Jesus, bread and communion and how they all relate to
personal spiritual relationships with God. I know I did.
During September and early October I will be taking
a particular focus on personal spirituality and
discipleship. This all relates to the group study of
Revival by Adam Hamilton. Along the way we will look
at some very basic, and very difficult questions: What is
a Christian? What is a Methodist? Are we in
Communion? and Are we Disciples? These questions
really do cut to the heart of our spiritual nature and
relationship with God, both as individuals and as a
church community.
As we look at ourselves through these different rolls
and perspectives, we should not be lamenting the things
we are not, rather let’s identify the areas we would like
to improve, and make plans to strengthen our community
and ourselves as we move into a new Christian year with
the start of Advent, November 29, 2015.
God is always looking to the future, rarely the past.
That is the great power of God’s forgiving grace. Let’s
be honest through this process and think forward into the
future.
Colby is an amazingly loving and caring community,
let’s pray about how to widen our circle and invite new
families to join us.
~Pastor Brian
Message from the Pastor
PNW Wildfires
We are still in the midst of wildfire season in the Pacific Northwest. It has already proven to be a time filled with personal tragedy and significant property loss. Our continued prayers are very important.
We don’t know now what the recovery efforts will require but we do know that volunteers will be needed to help rebuild the homes of those who don’t have the means to do it themselves. We are optimistic that faith-based organizations will once again partner to get the job done!
Now is the time to start building a financial resource for the recovery. You can make a donation to our PNW Conference’s Disaster Fund (Advance #352) through Colby UMC or by sending a check to:
Pacific Northwest Conference Office C/O Conference Treasurer P.O. Box 13650 Des Moines, WA 98198 with Conference Advance #352 on the memo line.
Gifts given to the Disaster Fund are coupled with the hard and generous work of United Methodist volunteers to respond to need that arises across the conference. Our volunteer efforts are intentionally collaborative so we can have the best opportunity to continue making a difference long after the news cameras move on to the next story.
Finally, please do not send donations in kind to the area unless an official request is made for specific items.

September Worship Plans
~Message from the Colby UMC Council~ The Church Council has asked the Trustees to proceed with insulation installation, roof removal and roof replacement for the church building. The work is estimated to cost no more than $40,000 and will be funded from portions of the Memorial and Capital Funds currently available in church accounts. These anticipated expenses will significantly reduce available Capital Fund reserves and your continued generosity to replenish the Capital Fund is greatly appreciated. Your earlier gifts to the Memorial and Capital Funds make this urgently needed work possible.
Thank you and God bless our Church,
The Colby United Methodist Church Council
Bible Study
New Bible study coming in September. Revival by Adam Hamilton, a study in spiritual development by following the path of John Wesley, will begin Wednesday evening, September 9th at 6:30pm and also during the weekdays
starting Thursday, September 10th at 1:00pm. This is a wonderful journey and is only 6 sessions. I would recommend this study to all kinds of small groups, and it is also very readable on its own. I would love to see each and every member take on this short, 6 week, study. Materials are available, just ask Pastor Brian.

September UMW Meeting
UMW meetings resume on September 2nd at 7pm. This meeting will feature a guest speaker from TCH. The topic will be DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Everyone is encouraged and welcome to attend. Please RSVP with Ledine Wilson or Jenniefer Sather so that we are able to plan for desserts. A field trip to TCH will occur later in the fall.
We’ll be collecting money to buy gift/gas cards for the women being assisted by Tacoma Community House. If you would like to help, please contact Cindi Irish or Jennifer Sather. Either one would be happy to accept your donation.
The UMW meetings are an opportunity for women at Colby United Methodist to strengthen our community of women and support each other in fellowship.
The purpose of UMW “is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.”
If you have any questions, please give us a call. Phone numbers listed below.

Bazaar Buddies
What is Bazaar Buddies? A group of women who get together to make things (and have a lot of fun and laughs while working) to sell at our annual November Bazaar.
When & Where do they meet? At church in the upstairs front classroom (unofficial ‘Buddy Room’) on Mondays from 10am-2pm. (Don’t forget to bring your lunch.)
What kind of things do they work on? Aprons, potholders, embroidered dish cloths and pillow cases, baby blankets & sweaters, hats, ornaments, and assorted decorative and kitchen items.
What do they do with the money made at the Bazaar? The money raised in the Bazaar is used to support local, national, and international organizations that help those in need. Some of the organizations we support are South Kitsap Helpline, Kitsap Community Resources, Stand-up for Kids, Etta Project, Coffee Oasis-Port Orchard, Discovery Alternative High School, UMCOR, Tacoma Community House, and Red Bird Mission.
If you have an idea or have seen something in a magazine or on Pinterest, that you think would be a good item, bring it with you and give the group a try.
If you have any questions, please contact Cindi Irish (360) 871-1376.
