September 2019 Issue 9 United Methodist News Listening to the Spirit: Hospitality On September 8 we will unveil our new hospitality area and updated Welcome Center. I am so excited to have this area for us to gather and share! Hospitality is one of the key factors in growing and healthy churches. Growing churches and healthy churches actively welcome newcomers and find ways to incorporate them into the life the of the church. The tricky thing about hospitality is it depends upon everyone. Yes, everyone! Why? Imagine you are a guest at a church and 8 people greet you warmly, but one person is crabby. Who do you remember when you leave? If youre like most people, you remember the irritable person. Its hard to believe, but according to Church Leaders magazine, first-time guests to our church make up their minds whether theyre coming back or not in the first 10 minutes of their visit! From the parking lot, to first impressions of the facility, to if they feel welcomed or not, those first 10 minutes make a crucial impression for the church! Improving our gathering area outside the sanctuary helps with that welcome! It also invites people to pause and visit over refreshments. It gives us a chance to share the love of Jesus with guests who might be at critical places in their spiritual journeys! Heres how you can be a part of our welcome: *Wear your name tag! It makes it easier for all of us to connect. *Sign up to provide refreshments. These are more than just cookies and coffee. These little vittles invite people to stay and chat. It is a chance to connect and build relationships. *Pray before worship that you might have eyes to see who needs some extra care. *Pass the peace, dont just chat with friends. Really, see who is around you and include them in Christ s peace! *Thanks so much for all you do to make this church a place for all people! Our next steps with our Healthy Church Initiative Prescriptions! We have completed some of our HCI work. These are the remaining steps as we continue in this process of transformation. Prescription 1. Grow Your Existing Sunday Morning Worship Services and Guest Hospitality. On or before September 30, 2019 Pastor and the Coach will name a Worship Team for the continuous improvement of worship. This will include a Deep Dive not only in to the Howand Whatof your Traditional and Contemporary services, but most importantly this team will dive into the Whyor the purpose of worship in each of these services. After the purpose or the Whyis clear, this team will then evaluate each element of worship to see how it fits in and supports the Why.Prescription 3c. A Desire to Experience Unity Even as You Grow Young (Congregation Separation) Building on your experience with the season of Missions and Relationships, the Missions team in consultation with Pastor and the coach will develop a plan for regular, on-going relationship development within the church. This could include regular intergenerational service groups, cross worship service small groups, interest groups, all-church events outside the church among other ideas you will have. This plan will be implemented by the end of March 2020. Prescription 4. Facilities. It is our recommendation that the Trustees receive insight from all of the other work that is happening in the church, paying particular attention to the function and purpose of the church building space as it relates to your core values and to the Whyof your church. The trustees shall formulate a plan to continue to improve and update your space so that it can be a tool for ministry. This plan shall be outlined by January 2020, but work on projects can begin sooner. Prescription 5. Strategic Leadership Development—Embedding Authority, Responsibility, and Accountability. Following your initial work with Core Values in January 2019, the Staff Parish Relations Committee will consider the strengths and opportunities of your staffing for the continued growth of your church. They will make an initial recommendation about number of staff and responsibilities of the staff to the Administrative Board by the end of April 2020. Note: some staffing changes have already been made. Building off your work with the book Growing Young,by June 2019, the Pastor, in consultation with the Coach, will appoint a short-term team to develop a plan for cultivating, identifying, mentoring, and authorizing leaders in an environment that links authority, responsibility, and accountability to each ministry area in this church. This team will present its plan to the Administrative Board for implementation by the end of January 2020. Then, at the beginning of February 2020, the Pastor, the Administrative Board, and the Coach will discern if there is a need to adjust the organizational structure of the church. The Pastor, in consultation with the Coach, will determine appropriate next steps accordingly. 6. Renewal Leave for the Pastor. (Anticipated in 2021) ~ Pastor Vicki

Listening to the Spirit: Hospitality On September 8 we will unveil our new hospitality area and updated Welcome Center. I am so

excited to have this area for us to gather and share! Hospitality is one of the key factors in growing

and healthy churches. Growing churches and healthy churches actively welcome newcomers and

find ways to incorporate them into the life the of the church. The tricky thing about hospitality is it

depends upon everyone. Yes, everyone! Why? Imagine you are a guest at a church and 8 people

greet you warmly, but one person is crabby. Who do you remember when you leave? If you’re like

most people, you remember the irritable person.

It’s hard to believe, but according to Church Leaders magazine, “first-time guests to our church

make up their minds whether they’re coming back or not in the first 10 minutes of their visit!” From the parking lot, to first

impressions of the facility, to if they feel welcomed or not, those first 10 minutes make a crucial impression for the church!

Improving our gathering area outside the sanctuary helps with that welcome! It also invites people to pause and visit over

refreshments. It gives us a chance to share the love of Jesus with guests who might be at critical places in their spiritual journeys!

Here’s how you can be a part of our welcome:

*Wear your name tag! It makes it easier for all of us to connect.

*Sign up to provide refreshments. These are more than just cookies and coffee. These little vittles invite people to stay and chat. It

is a chance to connect and build relationships.

*Pray before worship that you might have eyes to see who needs some extra care.

*Pass the peace, don’t just chat with friends. Really, see who is around you and include them in Christ’s peace!

*Thanks so much for all you do to make this church a place for all people!

Our next steps with our Healthy Church Initiative Prescriptions! We have completed some of our HCI work.

These are the remaining steps as we continue in this process of transformation.

MISSIONS

Have you heard about the Kindling Club? Iowa United Methodist Camps are seeking to decrease their apportionment footprint and become financially sta-ble. If United Methodist Camps have impacted your life in any way, please consider a monthly gift. De Streeter, a new member, says "I have seen what a difference camps make in children's lives as well as adults." The Kindling Club is off to a HUGE start! 54 individuals have joined the club, which has translated to over $13,000 of sustainable support for the camping program. What will happen when the Kindling Club has 100 members? 200 members? 1000 members? We can do it! Contact the church office for more information or check out https://www.iaumc.org/camps.

Home Ministers needed!

You can make a difference by become a Home Minister! Home Ministers are trained to take communion to those who are home bound, in nursing homes, or in long term care at the hospital. Home Ministers work in pairs and

Already, But Not Yet How do you stay hopeful when today is so hard?

Right now, there’s a gap between your current circumstances and what you’ve prayed for God to do. Sometimes in the wait – maybe in the first few days or weeks – it’s easy to trust God

with your prayers and have hope. But what about when those days and weeks turn into months and years?

Whatever you’re waiting on, we can find hope in the hard days together. As followers of Jesus, our hope is in Him, our greatest source of hope and joy.

Join us as we study the books of 1 & 2 Thessalonians, 1 & 2 Peter and Jude. Peter, Paul and Jude have plenty of practical advice for our daily life today.

Begins August 29 Choose the time that works best for you.
