Cultural Religious Psychology of the Hispanic Community towards the Virgin Mary

In these moments in which we live in polarized societies we find it more difficult for groups to understand the religious psychology of Hispanics, especially when it comes to the Christian faith. First, we must understand that in western cultures the role of the family falls above all, morally and religiously speaking, on the mothers of those homes. It is from this fact that an indissoluble bond of filial relationship of the children towards their mothers develops. There are three characteristics of the religious psychology of Hispanics that we have to keep in mind when understanding the popular religiosity of these brotherly people. First, the expressive and emotional bonding to The Person, in this case to the religious agents of the faith community, priests or religious agents. Second, the link to A Place, that is, with the Church as a place of encounter with God, and The Mother, the latter as the third link in the popular religiosity of Hispanic Christians in their countries. It is important to understand this, since the lack of knowledge of the religious psychology of these cultures is the first obstacle to being attractive to these Hispanic communities to our Anglo-Saxon Church in the United States. It is important to understand that educating in faith means maturing in faith. If we have a picture of St. Peter enthroned on the altar, why not have one of the Mother of Jesus on the same altar? Many times what we see seemingly opposed is more complementary than opposition. United all in the Christian faith, we liturgically commemorate Mary three times in the Book of Common Prayer, why not have a picture to remember, not worship, her? In the end, mothers are the reconciling and unifying entities in families, in society and in the Church at least, that’s the way it has been to the present.

Blessing of the BACKPACKS

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS

Priest: Our backpacks contain things we need, lunches and snacks, books and papers, sweaters and shoes. Gracious God, each day you provide for all our needs. People: Lord, keep us in the palm of your

hand.

Priest: We put on our backpacks and go out into the world. Whether we walk to school or bus, whether we drive to work or bike to the university, we take our backpacks with us. Lord, we need you with us even more than our backpacks. People Lord, keep us in the palm of your

hand.

Priest Lord bless these your children and their backpacks as they begin another school year. Keep them from danger and from fear. When they are in new places and with new people, help them to remember that you have written their names on the palm of your hand. Let them always know that they are your children in the world. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Celtic Christian Spirituality

1pm at the home of D’Ann Downey, 401 E. 4th Avenue. In the Celtic Christian world, heaven and earth are not divided. Spirit and matter are woven together inseparably. If we are to be a part of change and healing, we must also find a practice that strengthens the deepest yearnings of our being for wholeness. This is what the focus of these sessions will be about.

EYC NEWS….. The Senior EYC Room is being renovated! After more than a decade the Senior EYC will be updated over the coming month. Keri Herring has helped us to redesign the room to be a more welcoming space for our youth.

This past Wednesday we had 18 youth help us demo the wooden risers and the drop-down ceiling. The new design will feature a more industrial look, with the exposed concrete ceilings

and industrial pendant lighting. Please come check out the Senior EYC room as we update the space. The Junior and Senior EYC (6th grade to 12th grade) meet Wednesdays nights from 6:30-8:00 for Dinner and Formation and Sunday mornings from 9:15-9:50 for Breakfast and Fellowship. The first Wednesday of every month the EYC will meet at Schroeder's for our Food and Friendship night. Each youth needs to bring $5 for dinner. Invite your Friends! Please contact Mtr. Melissa with any questions that you may have about EYC happenings. Email: [email protected] Cell phone: 719-351-1904
