26th Sunday in Ordinary Time AMOS 6:1a, 4-7 Woe to those who lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat lambs from the flock, and calves from the midst of the stall. PSALMS 146:7-10 The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. 1 TIMOTHY 6:11-16 Fight the good fight of the faith. LUKE 16:19-31 And he said, “Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.”

Joanne Gibson, Editor Diana Zuna-Nieves, Associate Editor Bulletin announcements and columns are due on Mondays before 2 PM except before holidays.

Bulletin drafts are submitted to Msgr. Flynn for review. Email submissions to [email protected]. Email photos of St. Mark’s events to [email protected].

In 1999, Pope John Paul II proclaimed Our Lady of Guadalupe the Protectress of unborn children as well as the patroness of the Americas and empress of Latin America. So it was two decades ago that the Knights of Columbus adopted Her as the fraternal order’s patroness. As a way to honor their new patroness, the Knights commissioned the production of multiple replica paintings of the relic located in the basilica in Mexico with the intention of having them travel across their jurisdictions. Each copy was painted in Mexico and signed by the rector of the basilica before Pope John Paul II blessed them.

According to the Knights, the role of Mary as Our Lady of Guadalupe in this century is to crush the serpent and end our

own era’s resumption of human sacrifice through approved abortion.

St. Mark’s parishioner, Bernard “Bernie” Ricciardi, was instrumental in bringing the icon to St. Mark’s for our vibrant Spanish community. His life-long devotion to helping the parish community and raising funds for the most vulnerable in our midst are the reasons why Bernie has been named Mary’s Child Pro-Life

Ministry’s 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Bernie will be honored, along with Msgr. Flynn who was voted the 2019 Champion for Life, at a dinner on Sunday, October 27th, at Doolan’s Shore Club, Spring Lake Heights.

Reservations are coming in and tables are filling up so please complete the form on page 9 and submit today!

Collecting and perhaps secure the offering. Distributing the bulletins. Checking after Mass for articles left behind. Msgr. To be human is to suffer—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In addition to our own suffering, we also encounter the suffering of those around us. While the world of medicine attempts to relieve suffering and the media tries to sell us on a life without pain, only the Church offers the perspective that suffering has meaning.

St. John Paul II said that suffering without meaning can lead to despair, but if we can attach meaning to our suffering, we are capable of going through anything. Come join us as Jeff Cavins will helps us discover the Biblical Keys for Hope and Understanding in times of suffering.

Sept. 29, 2019: CYO school year is off to a great start!!! Lots and lots of new members and every one of them is awesome!

This past Sunday, my sister Adele, who had been visiting me for a few days, asked me if she could attend our CYO meeting. She just wanted to see what we did and why it is such a joy for me to work with our CYO youth. I asked her if she would share her adoption story.

Adele is the second oldest of my parents’ eight children. She was the dream big sister—always giving so much love, affection, and great advice and support. Generous to a fault, once she began her teaching career, she actually took me on a vacation to Puerto Rico and paid for the whole trip!!! We had a blast! She also joined me when I was “backpacking” through Europe for three months. She had a suitcase.

Adele always dreamed of marriage and family but for many years this did not happen. She dedicated herself to teaching, got a doctorate degree, became an author of many ESL text books, and was a long-time professor at CUNY.

She finally married Ed in her mid-40s and was hoping they could have children but a medical condition prevented it. So they sought to adopt. This was difficult to do because adoption agencies prefer younger couples. It’s a long story (filled with Holy Spirit-guided miraculous moments) but eventually they went to Russia and adopted two girls—ages 9 and 12. These girls had been separated as young children but were biological sisters. One had cerebral palsy.

Both had been severely abused. While in Russia, another girl with facial deformities begged them to adopt her, too. It took almost two years but eventually they were able to adopt her as well . She was 16. Once they were all here, Adele was able to get her girls the corrective surgeries they required so that they could live happy, healthy lives. My three nieces are now all beautiful and thriving!!!

Adele freely admitted that she had not planned to adopt for any humanitarian reason. She merely wanted to have her own children. Little did she know that she had rescued three girls that had been severely abused, and eventually, when put out of the orphanage, would have been targeted by human traffickers. Statistically speaking, these orphans die within ten years.

The CYO teens were very moved by Adele’s story. Many of our CYO members at the end of the meeting went up to her and gave her a huge hug. She was so moved by this. It was as if Jesus was hugging her through our CYO angels for all that she and Ed had done to give these three girls a beautiful life here in the US.

I am so proud of Adele. She has worked hard all her life, been very active in the pro-life movement, and gave three orphaned girls the love and joy of a family. Most importantly, she lives her Catholic faith. She currently runs the Legal Center for Defense of Life in Morristown, NJ. Reminder: CYO meets today, Sunday, Sept. 29th, at Lanes at Sea Girt from 2-3:30 PM. Bring $12.50 and a permission slip!!!
