A Heart for God & for People...

Reflecting with Rick…

It was such a blessing being away for a while to rest, relax and recharge. Nancy and I enjoyed being with our family and some friends. However, it is great to be back. I missed being in the pulpit preaching God’s Word to His people.

I am excited about fulfilling our evangelistic vision of becoming better witnesses to the unsaved people we encounter on a daily basis. We want to penetrate our community and beyond with the gospel of Christ. To do this, we must do several things:

1: We must trust in the power of the Gospel. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is our ONLY hope for influencing our community for Jesus Christ. We can never forget that we were once lost and hopeless until we trusted in the reality that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and raised on the third day to give us forgiveness, power and hope.

2: We must see our community as it really is. Communities and cities change continually. Demographic shifts alert us to some challenging demographic realities. We must see Northwest Guilford County as it is, not as it used to be or as we choose to imagine it to be. If we do not know our community, how can we reach them?

3: We must determine to hear God’s voice and do whatever He says. That means as a church family we must make a strong commitment to hear God’s voice through Scripture as led by the Spirit, and do whatever He says to do. A strong commitment must also be made to pray. We will lift up the names of people we love and care for in our small groups and in our worship services. In addition, beginning on September 2, we are starting a weekly Midweek Service in the sanctuary that will include a time of earnest prayer and Bible study. I hope you will join us. SUNDAY SMALL GROUPS - Fall Focus (Sept-Nov) New Studies BEGIN: September 6 Bible Studies for Life: (Focus= Life)

Promises & Game Changer: How to Impact Your World.

Covenant-Maker. Classes: 9:00 am – Porter/Dubose, Moss/Byrd | 7:45 pm Tuesdays – Nealy

See Guest Connections on Sunday morning or Pastor Forrest for small group info: [email protected].

A Heart for Evangelism: “Making a list & checking

it twice”… Our new church year has begun and so has the intentional focus upon the good news of the Gospel and of getting that good news into the lives of those who need it most. We have started compiling a list of those people that we, as members of Cornerstone, know who do not have a saving relationship with the Lord Jesus. We are gathering first names and last initials only (for the sake of confidentiality), and Sunday, September 6 we will begin to intentionally pray for the lost by name.

If you haven’t submitted names yet, you may do so

through your small group, through the station in the prayer

room (Room 132), to any minister, or in worship services.

CBC Distinctives Series:

The CBC Distinctives sermon series dealt with three Distinctives: Christian, Baptist, and Cornerstone. The series was an in-depth teaching of what we believe and what we are as Christian Baptists who form the faith family of Cornerstone. The series is available online and will be simplified into our new CBC Distinctives class which will be offered mid-fall. If you’ve been a part of this preaching series and are ready to take the next steps in joining this church, please contact Pastor Forrest – [email protected]

A Heart for Evangelism:

“Cultivating our hearts”… If we are to be a church who reaches out to those who need Christ, we will need the heart of Christ for those who do not know Him. This is a work that only God can do within us. However, we can meet with Him in a way that provides the opportunity for Him to do this work in our hearts. And this is what we will begin in September starting this Sunday. With the names we already have (which will be added to throughout the year), Cornerstone will begin making time for a) God to work in us and b) to intercede together for those who don’t know Christ. Our worship services will contain intentional time set aside to pray for the lost and to ask for a God-given heart for one another and for those who need Christ. We will be reading a short list of first names during the services and will then pray together for these dear ones to come to know Christ. During our prayer for them, we will be asking God to work in our midst in ways that cause us to encounter His presence, allows Him to change us and gives us a heart and mind for those whom we are praying for.

We encourage you to begin praying for those that God

wants you to add for us as a church to pray for.

Small Group Fellowships Feedback: Numerous groups got together during the two weeks we set aside for small groups to have time to fellowship. Opening up a couple of Sunday nights made space for relationship to happen. Some of the things our small groups did:

Southern Veggie Dinner Fellowship Homemade ice cream fellowship social Swim/Karaoke family party Some classes got together numerous times doing things like cookouts, going to a grasshoppers game, lunch together after church, a Friday night fellowship that included food and making lunches for the homeless, going to deliver bags the next day, and attending a Social Justice Gala together that evening. Other groups have plans for combined fellowship and routine fellowship as we head into Sept.

Life happens in proximity to one another. As a reminder, the Greatest Commandments are relational in their entirety. Loving God with everything and loving our neighbor as ourselves can only happen through the context of relationship. Be encouraged to continue to invest yourself in relationship with those around you so that the Kingdom, which is relational, may flourish in our midst.

End of Summer Fellowship Feedback: Sunday evening August 16, we had a major turnout for the cookout/dessert contest. Quite honestly, there were many more people than were expected! As many of you know, the Riccio family won the dessert contest with their famous homemade Oreo ice cream. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the plethora of homemade options, playing games out back and spending time in conversation. All in all, it was an extremely “sweet time” of fellowship together.

"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do

good works, which God prepared in advance

for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10, NIV)

This month I simply want to give you a word of encouragement and remind you that every little thing you do matters to God and to the people around you! Allow me to illustrate by sharing a personal story. August 20th Wayne Reich and I played a free worship concert in Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem. It was a part of a Christian concert series put on by WBFJ and Chick-fil-a. Despite thinking through every little thing I thought I'd need to do the show, I somehow arrived to the venue to discover I didn't have a guitar strap. How did I grab merchandise, back up 9-volt batteries, extra cables, and forget something as basic as a strap?! Wayne brought a wireless system to use with his violin and somehow he arrived in Winston then realized he left AA batteries sitting on his desk in Greensboro. He and I are usually not so...well, "Magoo" might be the best word. We knew we could easily buy batteries in the mall, but were at a loss for finding a guitar strap. I told Wayne to go get his batteries, and I resigned myself to having to sit in a chair on stage to play the concert, which wouldn't be the end of the world but would feel strangely lethargic to me since it wouldn't match my musical energy. A few minutes later, Wayne comes back and hands me a guitar strap. I immediately ask, "What?! Where did this come from?" He tells me that as he went to the other side of the mall to get batteries he ran into a homeless man who was playing guitar outside a retail store. This man is paid a small amount by the store owner to play and hopefully attract people to the store. Wayne struck up a conversation with the man, told him we were about to play, and said, "I have a strange favor to ask. Do you think we could borrow your strap for an hour?" The man said yes and said he loves Christian music. Wayne offered him a free CD, but the man said, "I live in a shelter so I'd really have no way to play it." Wayne offered him money and food to thank him. Eventually, they agreed Wayne would return with a Chick-fil-a sandwich with cheese. We played the show and I was thankful to have the strap. As we exit the stage, the radio station representative says, "Hey, if you guys want to eat Chick-fil-a for dinner they'll give you a free meal." Wow! Wayne was able to return the strap to this homeless man with a free meal that we didn't even have to buy! As the next worship leader began her set, she broke her capo and was immediately freaked out because she wasn't sure what to do without it. I was able to lend her my capo, save her set, and "pay it forward." God allowed us to minister to someone in poverty and allowed a man to serve others out of the little he had. Worship isn't music. It is our lives surrendered to God's plan. How does He want to use you? Maybe you can post words of encouragement on your social media that a friend will see at just the right time. Maybe you can exercise hospitality and help someone by allowing them to interrupt your life like this gracious homeless man did for me. Allow your life to be surrendered to God as your Lord and then prepare to be amazed by what He'll do! Dennis

Now that the kids are back to school “hitting the books”, why not stop by the library to check out a few books of your own? This month we are highlighting books which will help in your study of The Book. Here are a few you might want to check out!

Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem This introduction to systematic theology has several distinctive features: a strong emphasis on the scriptural basis for each doctrine and teaching; clear writing, with technical terms kept to a minimum; a contemporary approach, treating subjects of

special interest to the church today; a friendly tone, appealing to the emotions and the spirit as well as the intellect; frequent application to life; resources for worship with each chapter; and bibliographies with each chapter that cross-reference subjects to a wide range of other systematic theologies.

Living by the Book by Howard and William Hendricks With this classic book, Howard and Bill Hendricks invite you on one of the greatest adventures of your life – the journey through Scripture. In the Bible you can interact with the living God who wants a personal relationship with you. And no special skills are needed. If you can read, you can glean important insight from Scripture. 40 Questions About Interpreting the Bible by Robert L.

Plummer Answer questions such as: Which is the best English Bible translation? What are some general principles for interpreting the Bible? Can a text have more than one meaning? What are some helpful books or tools for interpreting the Bible? Do all the commands of the Bible apply today? And many, many more!

The MacArthur Bible Commentary by John MacArthur A complete Bible commentary in one volume. This commentary treats every passage of the Old and New Testaments phrase by phrase, with hundreds of word studies as sidebars throughout. It offers a broad overview of each Bible book and the internal consistency which results from having a single commentator.

Hope to see you in the library!

WOMEN’S MINISTRY… WOMEN’S MINISTRY… WOMEN’S MINISTRY… WOMEN’S MINISTRY… With the beginning of

the new church year, we will also begin a new focus in the Women’s Ministry this year—building relationships among our ladies. Hebrews 11:24-25 says, “And let us consider

how we may spur one another on toward love and good

deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in

the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and

all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Our goal this year is to do just that….get to know each other, fellowship together, encourage one another, worship together, love each other, and grow together in our faith and Christian walk. There will be many different opportunities to get-together as a group throughout the year: potlucks, movies, game nights, crafting classes, outings, and so much more. More information coming soon! We look forward to a fun and exciting year!

LADIES BIBLE LADIES BIBLE LADIES BIBLE LADIES BIBLE STUDYSTUDYSTUDYSTUDY “All day, every day, an invisible war rages around you—unseen, unheard, yet felt throughout every aspect of your life. A devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you: your heart, mind, marriage, children, relationships, resilience, dreams, your destiny. His battle plan depends on catching you unaware and unarmed. If you’re tired of being pushed around, this study is for you. The Enemy always fails when he meets a woman dressed for the occasion. The Armor of God, more than a biblical description of the believer’s inventory, is an action plan; it

is developing a personalized strategy to secure victory.” DATE: Mondays starting September 21 TIME: 7:00-8:30 PM PLACE: Fellowship Hall LED BY: Lynn Graham

STUDENT Ministries 6

Cornerstone College Ministry The Cornerstone College Ministry (CCM) exists for the purpose of investing in the lives of students, 18-25, to share the love of Christ displayed through the gospel. As we start another year, our hope is to expand our reach beyond just our 9:15 Sunday Morning Small Group. We are actually planning some future events, gatherings and opportunities to just hang out. If you know a college student looking for a great group of students to get connected with and/or if you have a heart for reaching and ministering to college students, please contact Patrick.

The Student Ministry has had an incredible summer! The Student Ministry has had an incredible summer! The Student Ministry has had an incredible summer! The Student Ministry has had an incredible summer! We have been serving on mission, building relationships, growing in our

understanding and love for Christ, and of course having a BLASTBLASTBLASTBLAST doing all of it. This past month we

officially sent off our graduates and welcomed up our new rising seniors into their senior leadership roles after a game of slip-n-slide kickball of course!

As we look to the new school year, we expect to have another incredible year ahead of us.

One of the biggest reasons we have been so successful as a Student Ministry is because of the love, energy, faithfulness, and hard work of our numerous Adult Leaders serving in our Wednesday Night iGroups, Sunday Morning Small Groups, and Sunday Night Discipleship. I want to take this moment to acknowledge all the hard work of the previous year and the excitement I have in serving along side of them this coming year.

Adult Leaders, it is because of everything that you do that we, as a student ministry, can strive to disciple

the next generation of leaders. Thank You!

Fall Retreat Dates Parents, while I will go into more detail about the Fall Retreat at our Annual Parent/Family Meeting, I did want to go ahead, for the sake of your scheduling, and let you know that our Fall Retreat will be October 23-25.

Parent/Family MeetingParent/Family MeetingParent/Family MeetingParent/Family Meeting We will be having our Annual Parent/Family Meeting on September 13, following the Sunday Morning worship service in the FLC. Lunch will be

provided, and your whole family is encouraged to attend. This meeting should last for just about an hour as we talk through dates of events and look at what we as a Student Ministry will begin doing. Last year was a great time for me to communicate my philosophy of ministry and vision for the Student Ministry. I look forward to this meeting being a time of communicating a little more as to what that will look like in moving forward.

Please RSVP to Susan Lee: [email protected]

PRESCHOOL & CHILDREN’S Ministries 7

Kendra’s Korner: Hello Cornerstone Family,

Praying you have had a wonderful summer and are all ready to join us as we begin a new church year with great excitement and joy! We are preparing for a year of focusing on evangelism and are even encouraging our children to participate as well. The Lord gives us each people in our paths daily to share Christ with. I pray that you will join us in praying for the lost even as families during your time together. I also want to encourage you dig into the Word together as a family as this new church year begins. What a joy to see so many children come to join us this summer for Centri-Kid Camp, VBS, and other activities where they were encouraged to spend time together in the Word of God. I pray that you as parents, will take time out of your busy schedule to dig into the Word of God with your Children and pass on the legacy of discipleship and living for Christ. Don’t miss out on being part of the Body of Christ and making an impact in the lives of your families for a lifetime by modeling for those around you what discipleship looks like! Praying many blessings ahead in our New Church Year!!

In His Grace,

Kendra Joyner

EVANGELISM is...intentional focus on the Good News of the Gospel and getting that Good News into the lives of people who need to receive it. You are encouraged to begin praying for those God wants to add to His Kingdom—through each of us! Watch for the ways you will be encouraged and challenged to pray for those who do not know Jesus Christ as Savior. Remember that we have partnered with truelife.org to provide an invitation resource specific to our church but that points people to videos to answer many of life’s hard questions.

Throughout the new church year, we are focusing on:

EVANGELISM — Having a heart for

everyone, in a rapidly changing culture, by

intentionally sharing Jesus in everyday

encounters.
