As you drive down Wilson Road you will now notice

that construction to the Youth Sports Complex is at a

minimum, that is because the Family & MWR Team is

putting the final touches on the facility for its Grand

opening on September 11.

The Sports Complex will be the extreme experience

for Youth ages three through High School. The Sports

Complex comes fully equipped with five soccer fields,

one football field, two minor baseball fields, one major

baseball field, and one Babe Ruth baseball field. Each

sports field will have lights to make night games the

ultimate experience. The complex also includes a

concession stand, press box, scoreboards, and electric

marquee to assist in advertising upcoming events.

Playgrounds, covered pavilions and walking paths are

also available for Soldiers and Families to enjoy.

The Youth Sports Complex will provide a centralized

location for Fort Knox Community youth sports

activities and a state of the art venue for youth to develop

their skills in team and individual sports, as well as

experience friendly competition and sportsmanship.

The Fort Knox Community is invited to join the Family &

MWR Team on September 11 from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM

as they celebrate this special event. The ceremony will

begin with Welcome and Remarks from BG Petrenko.

This celebration will kick off the first games for the

Fall Soccer and Football seasons. Activities for the day

include an inflatable water slide, inflatable jumping

activities, and special guests to include the Fort Knox

Fire Dept., Fort Knox Law Enforcement, and Former

NFL and U of L football player, Mike Brown. Mike

Brown played football for the Falcons and Red Skins

and will be bringing some signed NFL memorabilia

with him the day of the event.

A FREE soccer clinic will also be available for all Fort

Knox soccer participants provided by the Kentucky

Youth Soccer Association. Coaches and participants

are invited to join the KYSA staff for fun, games and

the opportunity to enhance their soccer skills.

Spend the day at the new Youth Sports Complex.

Everyone in attendance will have the opportunity to win

give-a-ways and receive a free hot dog, chips and drink!

Construction has consumed Family & MWR buildings

for the past several months. It is hard to miss the

work going on at the Barr Memorial Library, Rocker

II, Houston Bowling Center and the list goes on. One

facility in particular that has been closed for the past

several months is being transformed into a new and

improved state of the art facility that our soldiers and

families will be proud to utilize in the near future.

The Otto Physical Fitness Center was built in 1970 and

was named after 2LT William F. Otto, who in 1966 was

tragically killed in action in South Vietnam by small

arms fire. Lieutenant Otto was given the Distinguished

Service Cross for his heroism and bravery. Since that

time the fitness center has met several different needs.

During the 70’s and 80’s, it served as a gymnasium for

personnel working on the installation. In addition, it was

also used for an inclement weather PT site and a payroll

center for incoming Reception and Basic Trainees.

The newly renovated Otto Physical Fitness Center has

something for everyone. Renovations include a 20,784

square foot facility, which boasts a 6,000 square foot

mirrored wall weight room extension, an overhead

running track, over sixty-seven pieces of Nautilus and

Hammer Strength free-weights, and circuit equipment.

A separate 3,840 square foot section offers a mirrored

wall balcony area holding over twenty-five cardio

machines, such as, treadmills, ellipticals, stair climbers,

upright and recumbent bikes and eventually a TRX

training system. There will be wall mounted speed-bags

and heavy bags for boxing enthusiasts. It also contains

a 10,944 square foot basketball court with one main

floor goal setup or two side floor setups. Electronically

raised goals, scoreboard, and bleacher system will

appeal to Intramural Sports, Unit ceremonies, and

special Family and MWR functions. The facility has

enlarged saunas, new lockers, central heating and air

and an in house stereo system. The balcony and weight

room sport 55-inch fully loaded HD televisions.

On September 2, 2010 the doors of Otto Physical

Fitness Center will once again open to meet the needs

of the Fort Knox Community. Please join the Family &

MWR Team for an Official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM to celebrate the completion

of the locally funded construction and renovation

project. There will be a ceremony provided by our

Garrison Commander, to include refreshments, a

tour, and demonstrations of the new facility.

Family and MWR staff of Otto and other staff of the Family

and MWR team will be present to answer any questions

about using Otto Fitness Center. Hours of operation,

starting Tuesday, September 2, will be Monday through

Friday, 5:30 AM – 9:00 PM and Saturday, Sunday,

Holidays, and Training Holidays, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

For more information, please call (502) 624-3316.

In addition to learning choreography, performers memorize as many as 40 songs, ranging from country,

Why is Oktoberfest in September?

www.KnoxMWR.com

The answer goes back to 1810 during the dark days of beer drinking before the modern miracle of refridgeration.

In those days in Germany, beer would never be brewed in the summer months. The batches would never turn out good.

The last batches were usually made in March. These last batches would have higher alcohol content to take advantage of alcohol as a preservative.

Traditionally, there would be a big fest starting on the last Saturday in September until the First Sunday in October. The purpose was to drink up the old stocks of beer to make room for the new brew that would be made after harvest. The tradition goes back to the 15th and 16th Centuries.

in 1810. Crown Prince Ludwig threw a big party to celebrate his wedding to Princess Therese on October 12, 1810. The party was open to all. Everyone liked it so much they kept having the party every year.
