From the Pastor’s Desk 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Theme: Wanton Luxury
Unfortunately, this time around, we do not study (much less practice) the cardinal
virtues. Today we are more at home with “values” and opinions.” Virtue has about it a
kind of antiquated ring. It sounds so obsolete and unenlightened. It sounds a little too
self-righteous. It isn’t “compassionate” or “understanding” enough of the human
condition. Values, opinions, options and lifestyles are much more in tune with our world
in flux and pluralism. Diversity is the name of the modern game. Yet before dismissing it
altogether, let’s dust off the word “virtue” and see what lies below the surface.
Virtue is the excellence of the soul or character. Virtue bespeaks strength of intellect and
will. The cardinal virtues are the hinge on which our character moves. There are four of
them: prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude. Our readings this 26th Sunday seem to

tiene una especie de anillo anticuado. Suena tan obsoleto y no iluminado. Suena un poco
demasiado farisaico. No es "compasivo" o "entender" lo suficiente de la condición
humana. Los valores, opiniones, opciones y estilos de vida están mucho más en sintonía
con nuestro mundo en flujo y pluralismo. La diversidad es el nombre del juego moderno.

las cosas materiales de manera desmedida. Los ricos no son
condenados porque son ricos. Son llamados a la tarea debido a cómo
han obtenido su riqueza. Han retenido injustamente los salarios de sus
trabajadores. Este beneficio se ha utilizado indebidamente para
proporcionar a los ricos "lujo sin sentido". El trabajador ha sido
explotado y no se le ha otorgado la parte que le corresponde. Los ricos
han engordado con el trabajo de los trabajadores. Pero este es el
paraíso de los tontos. Doom es el pago final para todos los que

temperance is crucial for inner peace, especially in an age of
imbalance and discriminations.
St. James 5:1-6, calls to task all those who relate to material
things in an intemperate manner. The rich are not condemned
because they are rich. They are called to task because of how they
have obtained their wealth. They have unjustly withheld wages
from their workers. This profit has been misused to provide the
rich with “wanton luxury.” The laborer has been exploited and
has not been given his fair share. The rich have grown fat off the
labor of the workers. But this is a fool’s paradise. Doom is the
final payment for all who exploit the poor and the powerless.
The sinister aspect of wanton luxury is that the rich come to
believe they are exempt from the laws of God and man. They
believe their money and position are such that they need not
answer to God or any human authority. The rich need not to live
temporally. The just man can be ignored and even killed, racially
discriminated, and called names. Even the most basic laws of
human dignity do not apply if one has enough money, clout and
pull. The wanton rich develop an arrogance which numbs them to
the basic standard of decency
But God does not remain indifferent to the cries of those who
suffer injustice and exploitation. “Here, crying aloud, are the
wages you withheld from the farmhands who harvested your
fields. The shouts of the harvesters have reached the ears of the
Lord of hosts.” Two things are crucial-the very source of wanton
luxury are corrupt profits stand in testimony against the rich. The
things they intemperately sought will rise up as evidence against
them. Also, God is on the side of the exploited and those who
have no one to defend their cause. God must act because no one
else is acting.
As I mentioned before, the letter of James is concerned with
unjust riches and intemperate living. The rich of themselves are
not being condemned. It is how one obtains and uses one’s riches.
The danger is always to desire more and more. To believe that
one is more because one has more, that others are less if they have
less. Temperance, balanced living, are required so that our
possessions do not become wanton luxuries and stand in
testimony against us on the day judgment.
