Theme: Fidelity
What is fidelity? Fidelity is faithfulness to a person, cause, or belief, demonstrated by
continuing loyalty and support. It is unfortunate fidelity to commitment and the honoring
of pledges seem to belong to a distant Golden Age when a person’s word was as good as
his bond. A handshake was sufficient to seal a deal. Good morning means good morning.
I love you means I love you from the heart. All of these things seem to have changed.
Today, pledges and commitments seem to last about as long as a crease in our permanent-
press clothes. As we prepare to “tie the knot,” we seek out our lawyer. We want
“marriage insurance” or rather “divorce insurance” in the form of a pre-nuptial agree-
ment in case the marriage becomes a divorce statistic (anticipation often brings this about.
We want to safeguard our assets. Like so much of life today, we want “no-risk, no fault”
commitments. Is it any wonder that we find so little generosity and risk-taking? We get
what we expect.
Our readings today are about fidelity to commitments. The book of Genesis speaks of the
marriage commitment. “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his
wife, and the two of them become one body.” Life is a never-ending set of commitments
and pledges. The commitment to one’s family of procreation, the leaving of one’s par-
ents. This is not abandonment but being faithful to all that they have been taught.
Marriage is a lasting commitment to faithful love.

Podemos fallar a nuestro esposo o
Note que David no le dijo a
(Continued from page 1) We have all been drilled in the sixth commandment. It rules out
adultery. One can only have sex with one’s marriage partner.
Marital fidelity requires an exclusive giving of one ‘s self in sex-
ual, genital love. We reserve our bodies for the one to whom we
give ourselves totally and lastingly. We can only give ourselves in
such a way to the one with whom we plan to spend the rest of our
lives. The vulnerability of marital love in its sexual expression can
only be truly given to the one who cares for us and reverenced us.
But fidelity requires more. It is not limited to the physical. There
are many ways to be unfaithful. We can fail to give our best and
challenge the other to give his or her best. We can fail our spouse
by our coldness, insensitivity and lack of caring. We can fail our
husband or wife not only in the bed but in the kitchen, living room
and family den. One can be unfaithful without committing
adultery. We may very well keep the letter of fidelity without its
spirit. Granted, we can make tragic mistakes about whom we
marry. We are limited. However, God’s original plan is for us to
be faithful to our commitments. We should strengthen marital love
and the bonds of family life.
In the final analysis, we are to be faithful because God has been
faithful to us in Jesus Christ. Jesus was made for us little while
lower than the angels, that through God’s gracious will he might
taste death for the sake of all men.” We see clearly that God’s
commitment to us did not come cheaply. His grace is at work.
Jesus remains faithful to the Father by accepting the cup assigned
him to drink. For if we are to remain faithful to our many
commitments, in doing so, we imitate Christ in his commitments.
The Christian is not concerned with worldly success or making it
to the top. We are busy being faithful to our commitments to God
and each other. If we do this, we are indeed successful. Notice that
David didn’t tell his son to build up his kingdom with great armies
or to gather wealth from other lands or to defeat his enemies in
battle. Instead, his formula for success was to follow God and
obey him. When Solomon became King, he didn’t ask the Lord for
wealth and power, but for wisdom and discernment in order to
lead God’s people. God was pleased by this request and granted it
giving Solomon a wise and understanding heart, more than any
man had ever had before. (1 Kings 2:3) Let us pray that the Lord
will always give us the grace to be faithful in all our promises to
God, church and our neighbor.
