The 22nd Annual Margot Brown Wheelchair Regatta was hosted by Encinal YC on Saturday, September 29.

Margot Brown, a staff commodore of PICYA started the event as a way to say, “Thank You” to the veterans living in the various veterans' homes and veteran residence living in masonic homes around the Bay Area. Some 300 ambulatory, sight impaired and wheelchair board attend. For many, it is their only real day out of their homes. These veterans come from as far as the

California Veterans Home in Yountville, the Livermore, Palo Alto and Ft. Miley VA homes and even the VA Clinic in Martinez. The event had over 600 veterans, escorts, and volunteers on hand. Just as impresive was the 25 volunteer boat owners and their boats from the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA) and the Army Corps of Engineers boat “Dillard”. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts in Castro Valley provided hot dogs and hamburgers for everyone. PICYA members clubs helped in the kitchen and Martinez YC baked up hundreds of cookies. Anita Mahoney, Stacy Paluch and Susan Nork kept the flow of veterans and escorts going smoothly to the boats. Bill Nork, Shelly Bliss and crew worked the docks as folks were loaded and off-loaded. Our port captain, Michael Byroads sent boats out and brought them back. No one was lost overboard! Oakland & Alameda Firefighters, Local 55, Random Acts volunteers and the Coast Guard Petty Officers mess on Coast Guard Island, all worked shifts loading and off-loading the veterans in wheelchairs. Deputy Sector Commander for the Coast Guard Captain Marie Byrd and Lieutenant-Colonel Travis Rayfiend of the Army Corps of Engineers were our honored guests.

Rigo, Jerry and our club folks did their magic getting things ready for the Skippers’ Dinner Friday night in the Regatta Room and then having things ready Saturday morning. LOTS of coffee on hand. Eric Schoenwisner from Alameda YC provided bagels and cream cheese for a wee continental breakfast.

The club was decorated with the military service flags, the POW-MIA flag on our mast and we had a small band play sea chanties while the veterans arrived. A festive day made all the better by having nice weather. This event has been hosted by EYC from the start and is a very wonderful activity.

The Christmas Lighted Yacht Parade is coming up on Saturday, December 1st, from 5pm to 9pm. The theme this year is "A California Christmas." Whether on your boat in the parade or watching from the EYC clubhouse, this is a great kick-off event for the Holiday Season! The following Saturday the club will host the Children's Holiday party. Please mark your calendars!

That is about it in the way of news. Cheers, Fred

EYC members this is the Commodore, switch and answer channel 68, over…The season is changing, and the change of watch is around the corner. Pretty soon we will have a new group of volunteers taking the responsibility of managing the Club and planning its many events. We would not have a functioning club if it weren’t for the countless volunteers that donate their time

for the only reason that they love this Club, want it to succeed, and to help make it the best. Because the Presidents manage the Clubhouse, the Commodores attention can be directed to “On-The-Water” events. By the end of this year I am proud to report that the Flag will have planned and run 44 races this year, created the Paddle Club, helped revive the Lipton Cup, created the Encinal Regatta, acquired the “Blue Jay” a J-22 sailboat for all members to use, reestablished a sponsorship and donation program, established the Race Council, and made it so volunteers can sign up on-line. These Flag accomplishments are a result of the very hard-working Theo Rohr (Vice Commodore), Ted Floyd (Rear Commodore), the past Commodores, spouses, families, and the many volunteers that populate the race committee. I have been privileged to work with all of them and honored to be able to throw in my “2-cents” of improvement ideas to the organization, thank you all.I have enjoyed being a part of and amazed by the network of behind-the-scene dedicated volunteers. During my three years on the Board/Flag I have met and worked with some of the most energetic, fun, hardworking people that I can call friends. I highly recommend anyone who is thinking of getting involved with the club to just do it; through comradery come friendships, you will not be sorry. My grandfather used to say, “many hands make light work”; without the many hands EYC could not function as we know it. This year we abruptly lost our active duty Port Captain Tom Paluch to a fatal illness. I will miss Tom around the Club for his spirited bar banter with me, stories about over-renovating his Tolly Craft, and his controversial but well-organized Port Captain booking system. Tom became a volunteer almost immediately after becoming a member so that he and Stacey could meet most all the members, and they did. I hoist a glass in your honor, Tom.This year, the “Commodores Ball” is themed as an appreciation of the Club, it’s volunteers, and all members please consider attending this celebration to all. This will be my last Soundings communication as the Commodore of Encinal Yacht Club… switching back to channel 16 - Commodore Out.

Howdy folks! We have lots of updates during this time of transition between the summer and fall seasons, and they’re all positive! Activity hasn’t slowed down a bit, and the program is enjoying a spike in all enrollments. Thank you to everyone who supports the EYC Jr. Sailing Program through participation, donation, or volunteer service.

Summer Wrap-upWe celebrated the end to our summer sailing program with our annual

Jr. Sailing Summer Luau on August 16, and were thrilled to see everyone there. An amazing dinner was cooked by our volunteers (led by the amazing Flor Delle Cesse) and we served over 400 guests with ease. Congratulations to all summer sailors for completing their classes, and especially to those members of the Race Team who were selected as recipients of our perpetual awards! Our final regatta in the local summer series (2018 Summer B.A.Y.S. Series) was hosted by Treasure Island Sailing Center during Labor Day weekend. We brought a record number of optis to this regatta (15!), and enjoyed perfect sailing conditions on both days. Since this was the last event in the summer series, overall trophies were awarded. Congratulations to Daniel Erisman / Devon Kurisu for placing third overall in the C420 fleet, to Dylan Wondolleck for placing first overall in the Opti fleet, to Jonathan Andrews for placing first overall in the Laser Radial fleet, and to Jack Obot / Elek Strong / Alec Smith for placing third overall in the CFJ fleet! We’re thrilled with our results and can’t wait to dig into the Winter B.A.Y.S. Series to see if we can improve. The last event on our summer race team schedule was the West Marine Fun Regatta, hosted by Santa Cruz YC. We brought a small group to this event, where they enjoyed two days of amazing beach weather and some fun, challenging conditions. Thank you to West Marine for sponsoring the event, and for SCYC for hosting us and inviting us back for more sailing in the near future!

Fall SailingFall sailing is off and running with massive momentum from the 2018 winter and summer seasons! Our fall programs this season are the High School Race Team, the Advanced Race Team, and the Opti (Champ/Green Fleet) Race Team. Our High School Race Team is enjoying an extremely vigorous start to the season with approximately 90 sailors registered from 14 different high schools! Things have been busy already with practices under weigh and a beginning sailing clinic already completed. All teams are absolutely chomping at the bit to get racing, and are excited to compete in the first two local events of the season, Nor Cal #1 and Nor Cal #2, which will be hosted by Richmond YC. We’ve pulled out all the stops, bringing and borrowing every boat we can to get 44 sailors on the race course each day in 16 boats. Buckle your seatbelts, it’s going to be quite the season! Our Advanced and Opti Race Teams have also begun with fall practices and are eager to carry forward their summer momentum into our local winter series, as well as discussing the goal of traveling nationally to represent Encinal YC. We can’t wait to report back about our first event, which will be hosted by St. Francis YC at the end of October.

Last month, Mike’s Paddle offered a discounted Intro to SUP class here at the club. For a couple of us, it was our maiden paddleboard voyage. I will be honest, I did not have high expectations for my ability to get on, stay on or steer my SUP in any meaningful way. I planned to be very very wet, and I doubted I would get my board beyond the end of the docks. But alas, I was pleasantly surprised how helpful and effective this straightforward class was for me. By the end of the session, each of us were able to safely start, stop, turn, fall and get back on our boards. We’d love to offer more of these classes at the club. Let us know if you’re interested and we can schedule a class for 5 or more people.

Our active cruising fleet was busy in August and September. We had 8 boats make the annual trek to the Delta spending a week anchored in Potato Slough from August 4th through the 10th. In attendance were:

• Painkiller– Ed & Lori Lecco• Paramour– David & Anneke Dury joined

by Mike Pernitzke & Ina Tabak• Albatross– Chuck & Edie Herro• Zenith– Bill & Susan Nork• No Worries– Mike & Wendy Scheck• Tripple Crown– Patrick Welch • North Star II– Alan Almquist

The fleet rode up to the Delta on a nice flood tide and had wonderful weather which provided great sailing conditions for the sailboats. On Sunday after getting our water toys launched we kicked off the week with an awesome cocktail party hosted on Paramour. On Monday EYC General Manager Rigo Headley met the fleet for our Annual Delta Daze BBQ at Willow Berm Marina’s “Sand Bar”. Rigo cooked up burgers and hot dogs for a wonderful feast that was washed down by Painkillers mixed up by yours truly. The rest of the week was spent relaxing, tinkering on boats, dinghy trips to the various marinas for lunch and dinners ashore. One of the highlights was a dinghy raft up. There is something magical about tying up a bunch of dinghies’ and passing around appetizers while drifting around with little control of your direction. On Friday the fleet weighed anchor for home with most boats opting for an overnight stop at the Pittsburgh Yacht Club or Benicia. All in all, it was a great “Delta Daze” event.

Delta Daze was followed a few weeks later by another annual event – the Half Moon Bay Labor Day cruise hosted by Cruise Leader and EYC President Bill Nork. This year EYC joined up the Islander 36 Association and BCBC YC for this popular cruise South along the NorCal coast. We had a total of 15 boats, 48 skippers and crew plus one land yacht make the trip. There was not much wind for the cruise down, but we did enjoy following seas and the occasional whale sighting. Most of the fleet departed on Friday with some joining us on Saturday. As always, Half Moon Bay YC did a great job hosting all of the visiting crews that came from Yacht Club’s from the North and South. On Saturday Bill setup a most wonderful dinner at Mezza Luna which was attended by 50 people. Sunday was a day of relaxing for most, while others took a hike over to Mavericks Beach. The majority of the fleet headed back to San Francisco Monday late morning. We caught nice breezes resulting in a relaxing reach along the coast. Thanks Bill for planning and hosting a great weekend. We still have two more official events on our cruising calendar. China Camp the weekend of October 5th and our Cruising Awards Dinner Friday November 30th. Keep an eye out for more details on the Cruising Awards Dinner.
