General Guitar Stuff

AcousticsElectric guitars are actually acoustic instruments. Perhapsnot particularly loud, but the point here is that if a solidbody guitar does not sound good un-plugged then it won'tbe saved by a great set of pickups and a nice amp. Thereare many factors that contribute to the un-plugged soundof a solid body guitar but most of the response of theinstrument comes as a result of the wood used along withfit and finish.

Godin guitars are made using only solid wood, guitarsmade from plywood or particle-board tend to lack sustainand can be somewhat muffled sounding. Here is a brieflist of some of the tone woods used in key parts of Godinguitars.

BodiesThe bodies of the SD, SDxt and Radiators are made froma blend of two tone-woods. A center of silver leaf mapleserves as an anchor for the neck and is flanked by poplarsidepieces.Exit 22 and LG bodies are made of mahogany.

Neck Fit/PitchThe angle of the neck attachment—called pitch—has ahuge impact on sound, a slight tilt forward will cause theguitar to sound boomy, a slight tilt backwards can makethe guitar sound tinny. Equally important is the fit of the

neck into the body. Godin guitars are renowned for tight-fit-ting neck attachments that support excellent neck/bodyenergy transfer and precise neck pitch.

Rock Maple Necks There are many grades of maple available, rock maple isthe term often used to describe the particularly hard varietyof the wood that grows in colder climates. Rock maplenecks produce excellent sustain, stability and feel. Rockmaple necks also work well with either Rosewood or Maplefingerboards.Note: A rosewood fingerboard will emphasize a little moremid-range and produce a more aggressive sound. A maplefingerboard will have the opposite effect and sound a littlemore 'acoustic'. These are generalizations however, notrules. Always choose your guitar based on feel, sound andlooks. Not what it’s made from.Rock maple necks are used exclusively on the followingGodin models; SD, SDxt, Exit 22 and Radiator.

Mahogany NecksHonduras Mahogany has a long history as the tone-woodof choice for acoustic guitar necks. The same propertiesthat give mahogany its appeal in an acoustic guitar namelya warm harmonically rich sound have a similar effect in asolid body electric guitar. Mahogany necks are used on the LG-SP90 and LG HMBmodels.

ErgocutEvery Godin neck features an Ergocut shaping techniquewhich bevels the edges of the fingerboard and frets back intowards the center of the fingerboard providing anextremely comfortable worn-in feel.

PickupsGodin pickups are designed to be dynamic, responsive andtransparent. Whether you play lightning fast country licksor big fat power chords you'll appreciate the versatility ofthese pickups as they were carefully chosen for their abilityto compliment the natural tones of the guitar.

* Throughout this manual we refer to humbucker and/orsingle coil pickups as magnetics.

As mentioned earlier, great pickups won't save a badsounding guitar, but they are an essential componentnonetheless. On the following pages you will find descrip-tions of the various pickups used in the Godin PerformanceSeries by model, as well as the pickup selector settings.

Tone tipsGetting the ideal sound is very subjective and there aremany factors that affect the overall tone. Your amplifier, playing style, and of course the guitar itself including thewood selection, pickups and set-up are just some of thesefactors that affect the tone of your guitar. Taking this intoconsideration, we decided it would still be fun to give you acouple of suggestions that can help you on your way to

finding your favorite sounds on the guitar. In general lower-ing the guitar's volume slightly will clean up your tone whenthe amp is in overdrive. You may also want to experimentwith the tone control, which can accentuate different fre-quencies depending on the pick-up switch position and givethe guitar a different tonal character. Unless otherwisenoted the volume and tone control for the examples wereset to 10. See individual models for some suggestons toget you started.

Care and MaintenanceThe easiest way to keep your guitar clean is by simplyusing a polishing cloth without using any polishes at all. However if you are going to use a polish please use a non-abrasive non-wax based polish. Apply the polish on a clothfirst. Do not spray it directly on to the guitar. After you havepolished the area you are working on turn the cloth over toa 'dry' side and remove any excess residue.

FingerboardsFor Rosewood fingerboards we suggest removing thestrings and applying lemon oil to a cloth, then working theoil into your fingerboard. Let the oil soak in for a few min-utes before wiping off the excess. This should be done atleast once a year. Doing so not only cleans and avoidscracking it also keeps your fingerboard from losing its lus-tre. Generally, maple fingerboards are pretty much mainte-nance free. However if the neck starts feeling sticky youcan use a slightly damp polishing cloth without any guitarcleaner on it followed by a dry cloth.

Strap pinsEvery Performance Series guitar—with the exception of theRadiator—comes standard with Schaller locking strap pins.Having locking strap pins prevents your guitar from acciden-tally falling off. If you do not have a strap with the corre-sponding "male" lockers you can purchase these at anymusic store.

*Specs subject to change without prior notice.

Double-action truss rodThe neck on your Godin guitar is reinforced by a double-actiontruss rod system, the truss rod provides for easy adjustmentwhen the neck reacts to changes in relative humidity. Truss rodadjustments should only be made by a qualified guitar techni-cian.

The Humbucker-single-humbucker pickup configuration (GodinGHN1, GS1, GHB1) and five- way switch makes the SDxtextremely versatile. Instead of splitting the humbuckers inpositions two and four we augment the sound by adding themiddle single coil to the humbucker already selected.

Monstrous distortion tones are easily dialed in via theaggressive Godin bridge humbucker and stinging clean tones arealso at your fingertips thanks to the Godin single coil pickups inthe middle and neck position.

The LG features a Mahogany neck and body with a rosewoodfingerboard. Two Seymour Duncan P90 Custom 3 single coilpickups and a three-way selector switch make the LG versa-tile yet straightforward. The unique recessed bridge on the LGmodel allows for greater right hand comfort and the fact thatthe strings resonate closer to the body adds to the over allsustain. You will notice that the bridge features 2 pole piecesthat double as adjustment screws. Since the bridge isrecessed into the body this allows you to adjust the bridgeheight with a flat screwdriver without having to remove thebridge and use the conventional adjustment wheels.
