From the Chair of theBoard of Regents Dear Alumni and Friends of Serra,

When I began my term as chair of Serra’s Board of Regents, I gained a “bird’s-eye” view of the wonderful work of this group! Comprised of alumni, alumni parents, and “Friends of Serra” from the various professional communities, this board is committed to securing Serra’s future in a variety of ways. In particular I would like to point out the work of two “ad hoc” committees that have been formed to address critical needs at this point in the school’s history: The Phase II Core Team and the Admissions Marketing Committee.

The Phase II Core Team has been convened to assist the Serra administration’s efforts to design, fundraise for and build the facilities designated for Phase II of our Master Plan, “Building for Our Future.” The current scope of this project calls for the construction of the following:

New Art and Music BuildingNew 35 meter Pool New facilities for the Academic Resource Center Three new classroomsExpanded locker/training and custodial facilities

Spring semester will be devoted to an architectural design review and fundraising feasibility study. I ask that the entire Serra Community keep this effort in your prayers as the case for the construction of these facilities is compelling and urgent! Brian Morton (Serra ’83), Bob Olson (Serra ’85) and Kathy Lavezzo (mother of Donnie Lavezzo, Serra ’06) are the board representatives on this committee.

Although Serra enjoys record applications and enrollment, the board has created the Admissions Marketing Committee to review and enhance current efforts in this regard. We want to ensure that the good news about Serra’s academic and extra-curricular programs is effectively spread far and wide! With the advent of our new web site (www.serrahs.com) the school now has another wonderful communication tool to tell Serra’s story. Don Transeth (father of Chase Transeth, Serra ’06), Anne LeClair (mother of James LeClair, Serra ’07) and David Philpott (Serra ’87) are the board representatives on this committee.

In future editions of Traditions, it will be my pleasure to update you on the work of the other board committees: Strategic Planning, Finance, Development and Buildings & Grounds.

Dear Friends,

Too often we hear about schools facing severe financial straits that result in tragic cutbacks to student services and extra-curricular activities. In contrast, Serra High School has built new state of the art facilities, is actually expanding student services programs, and has added new courses to its curriculum. We simply could not do this without the support of our friends and benefactors.

Let me give but a few examples of how your generosity is being put to good use:

Each year we provide $750,000 in tuition assistance to qualified students;

Our new Assistant Principal’s efforts are adding great value to programs that develop student leadership, spiritual formation and other vital student services;

Your Serra Padres are making full use of the new athletic and academic facilities we opened last year;

New Advanced Placement Computer Programming and Virtual Enterprise courses are providing students with key 21st Century knowledge and skills;

An Advanced Placement Spanish course is in the works for the very near future;

We are conducting a national search for a new Campus Minister who will add significant value to existing spiritual formation programs;

The Parent Education Program, now in its 4th year, provides parents great information about the issues and challenges their adolescent sons face. This program also presents strategies for keeping open the lines of communication between parents and sons;

Planning has begun for fundraising and construction of a new pool, new Art and Music facility, expanded facilities for the Academic Resource Center, new classrooms and expanded locker and maintenance facilities.

So Serra continues to move forward expanding student services programs, curriculum and facilities. We do so mindful of our ultimate goal: to help our students grow as men of Faith, Wisdom and Service -- leaders who will make a difference for the good in the lives of others.

On behalf of our current and future Padres, thank you for your generous support of Junípero Serra High School. Your support makes all the difference in the world!

ProgramIn a given year, total operating expenses at Junípero Serra High School exceed the tuition and fees collected. The differential varies with emerging educational programs and facility improvements that enhance both student instruction and the physical plant. The revenue generated by our Parent Pledge Program helps close this gap and allows the administration to address planned and unexpected needs throughout the year. The Parent Pledge Program flows directly into areas of school life experienced by students. Most recently this money has been directed to the Building Fund and the need for new and better facilities. The parents listed below and on the following four pages have generously contributed to the Parent Pledge Program during this fiscal year (July 1, 2005 thru June 30, 2006). We couldn’t provide the programs we do without this much needed support.

The Academic Resource Center, which began in 1999, started with 22 students and was housed in the area that was once the library’s workspace. The program, now with 110 students, helps those with learning differences to reach their full academic potential through assistance, appropriate accomodations and tutoring.

We propose an enlarged classroom area that will provide more space for teacher-led study groups, technology, student privacy and a conference area.

When the Serra swimming program began in the early 1960’s, it first used the swimming pool at the Elks Lodge down the street on 20th Avenue. As the progam became more successful, the need for our own pool was apparent. In the mid-1960’s, a group of parents spearheaded a drive to build the pool. When the pool was completed in the summer of 1966, it was state-of-the-art and the envy of other schools. Now the pool is one of the oldest in the county and no longer meets the needs of our growing aquatic program.

What has Serra meant in my life?

Serra is the foundation for all of my academic, professional and personal

achievements. I learned the values of a lifetime -- integrity, trust, loyalty, and what

it means to work towards a goal.

At Serra I gained life-long friends; I was taught the art of critical thinking, how to

work with other people and, finally, how to respect and care for all those I meet along

the way.

I am truly blessed to have attended Serra and I am proud to give back.

Panther to Padre

In October of 1964 my family moved from Cincinnati, Ohio to San Mateo. I personally moved from being a Panther (nationally renowned Elder High school) to being a Padre. Or, so I thought. At age 15, that was a traumatic move. Fortunately for me, it was Serra High to which I moved. I remember suiting up for a basketball game early that first season. As a typical superstitious athlete, I was still wearing my purple Elder High gym shorts under my game uniform for good luck. The color purple is hard to hide. Our senior captain, Jim Olsson ‘65 noticed this odd ritual and confronted me about it. He was so great. He didn’t embarrass me. I really believe he understood what I was going through. Instead, with the positive spirit of Serra, he invited me to be a Padre. He said that we have our own great tradition , and I can join any time I want. Needless to say, the purple shorts were never seen again. Then the next year, I got to witness for the first time the famous “Squashing of the Prunes” ceremony before the Bellarmine football game. What an awesome spectacle! I was hooked as a Padre!

At some point in life, we realize there is no going back. For me it came at Serra. What helped me most was being accepted so readily by everyone at Serra for who I was . . . something every adolescent craves and needs. I’m sure that the environment that helped me so much still exists at Serra today. I’d like to invite all the alum to keep on being a Padre. Keep up the great work, Serra High, and “Go Padres”!

Giving back to Serra High School has always been a high priority for our family. The friendships, education, and life lessons that Serra provided for me as a student continue to influence me every single day. The brotherhood that is so often spoken about is so tough to explain to many people, but whenever we return to Serra for athletic events, fundraisers, and more, it’s absolutely there.

A perfect example of why we give to Serra and why Serra continues to be such a great place to send young men is the football game against St. Francis this year. Standing amongst a large group of my close friends who graduated in the 70’s, along with my son’s friends and nephew’s friends who graduated twenty to thirty years later, it was amazing to see how the Padre brotherhood could bridge any gap. After the game, as the fans poured onto the field, it was again truly unique to see faculty and Padres of the past celebrating and mingling with current and future Padres alike.

Over the past 40 years, I have seen first hand how times may change but Serra High School remains dedicated to producing the young men, guided by the faith and values of Junipero Serra, who will excel in every facet of life. For this reason we remain committed to supporting Serra High School.

Attending Junipero Serra High School was one of the best experiences of my life. More important than just the academic preparation, it helped me to develop a discipline that has been a key factor in my professional success. Not only was I fortunate enough to attend Serra, but my two older brothers and my five nephews attended Serra as well.

The environment at Serra helps young men build character and establish a strong sense of values that will provide a foundation for them for the rest of their lives. Serra makes a difference -- the kind that will affect a young man’s future direction, in particular, at a formative stage of his life.

My wife and I are blessed and appreciate the opportunity that we can share our good fortune with others, so that the next generation of Padres will have the same opportunities that I had.

There is no greater pleasure than seeing the direct benefits associated with our contributions.

Although it has been many years since our son, Troy ‘91, graduated from Serra, we still remain very committed to the brotherhood that is built among the ‘extended family’ at Serra High School.

As a family we have always supported Catholic Education and putting our son at Serra challenged him spiritually, academically, athletically and socially. In addition, we wanted a learning environment that would become an extended family for our son. That is exactly what our four year experience at Serra was. These bonds of friendship are as strong today as they were then.

We continue to give as we believe deeply in the mission Serra High School has set forth . . . helping our boys challenge themselves and not to settle for less. We are forever grateful.

What a great time to be a Serra Padre!! A thousand young men in the process of becoming adults. If you walk the halls of Serra during the day, you see so much taking place. If it is 6:00 a.m., the crew team is practicing on the erg machines and the water polo team is beginning their warm ups. At lunchtime numerous clubs are meeting to plan future activities. Classrooms have outstanding teachers engaged in the art of teaching. The College and Career Center hosts college representatives describing their institutions to our students. The Campus Ministry team gathers to plan future retreats and service

projects. After school, the cross country and football teams are practicing until the sun does down. And, later in the evening, the Board of Regents, Boosters’ Club, Mothers’ Auxiliary or Fathers’ Club are meeting to plan Serra events and Serra’s future.

What you may ask is the point in mentioning all this? Simply stated . . . We could not do all we do and provide so much for our young men if we did not have the outstanding support of each of you! As you read this Annual Report, please note the generosity and diversity of support that is illustrated in these pages. Such generosity allows Serra to continue its work, ensuring future generations of young Padres.
