Why do we sing? “1. God has bestowed upon his people the gift of song. God dwells within each human person, in the place where music takes its source.
Indeed, God, the giver of song, is present whenever his peo- ple sing His praises. 2. A cry from deep within our being, music is a way for God to lead us to the realm of higher things. 3. As St. Augustine says,“Singing is for the one who loves.”4 Music is there- fore a sign of God’s love for us and of our love for Him. In this sense, it is very personal. But unless music sounds, it is not music, and whenever it sounds, it is accessible to oth- ers. By its very nature song has both an individual and a communal dimension. Thus, it is no wonder that singing together in church expresses so well the sacramental pres- ence of God to His people.” Interestingly enough, the Bishops wrote pages and pages on “Why We Sing?” This small section of the 87 page docu- ment is a very important part because it denotes where this gift comes from and how it relates to liturgy. Since coming to St. James, I have noticed how much the congregation sings. What a blessing to not only have talented Cantors, Psalmists, Choir Members, Clergy & Instrumentalists, but also a congregation that recognizes the importance of par- ticipating in the Mass through song! If you would like to try participating in song in a slightly different way by singing with the Choir, please email, call or text me at 716-239-2822 or [email protected]. You may also pop by our Wednesday 6pm Choir rehearsals up in the choir loft. Your desire to serve The Lord is the main requirement, everything else, I can teach you! Regard- less of where you sing, in the loft or in the pew, God bless you! Peace, Georgia Stockman

“WHO AM I TO JUDGE ?”
Each one of us is created for love. The good news is that we don’t have to figure out how to live up to this pur- pose on our own. In this week’s session of “Who Am I to Judge?” we’ll discover that there really is a set of skills that will make us capable of living our relationships well and eventually building up a great society: the virtues (and how these virtues are the skills we need for life). Everyone is invited to join us! In order to make this pro- gram more accessible, this class will be offered in multiple parishes. Each week you can go to the class that best fits your schedule.
Mondays 8:45 - 10:15 am St. James the Less 6:30 - 8:00 pm St. James the Less Tuesdays 6:30 - 8:00 pm St. Patrick’s 6:30 - 8:00 pm MMOC Wednesdays 8:00 - 9:30 am Blessed Sacrament 9:45 - 11:15 am Roncalli Newman 1:00 - 2:30 pm Holy Trinity Thursdays 9:15 - 10:45 am St. Patrick’s 6:30 - 8:00 pm Cathedral Fridays 10:30 - Noon Cathedral

Last week the bulletin letter explored the presence of heroes in the Church. Saints whose heroic lives of great love as they live daily for the Lord. In the coming days, however, we ven- erate not the saints, but we venerate angels whose feast days appear on the Roman Calendar. It is important to keep the distinction for theological and practical reasons. Although we share some attributes like the presence of intellect and will, what we don’t share in common makes all the difference. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, angels are pure spirit, creatures of an invisible reality. Their splendor is far beyond that of anything created in the invisible world. Some we know by name from Sacred Scripture. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael even appear in recognizable forms in order to impart the message God gives through them to the people be- fore whom they appear. Others remain nameless but their protective work is clearly felt in the world. Sacred Tradition is consistent throughout the centuries about their worship of God in the sanctuary of heaven and their role in our lives, even as Guardian Angels. They are surpas- sing in beauty, strength and knowledge. So it may come as a surprise to many to know that angels are lower than humans in the hierarchy of created beings. An unfortunate misunderstanding regarding the distinction between angels and people has crept into our common parlance, albeit through a good intention. It comes in our culture from a desire to help those who suffer grief at the death of a loved one. We can hear people say, “She is an angel in heaven.” Or, “He is one of God’s angels now.” It is okay to receive the sentiment of hope behind such statements. We appreciate the fact that friends and relatives just want to help make us feel better in a time of separation and sorrow. But not knowing what else to say, they resort to common phrases they have heard or seen but are empty of theological meaning. In reality, properly understood truth is far more consoling. As described above, angels are pure spirit; they are non-corporeal. Humans, on the other hand, from the moment of conception are equipped with a spirit and a body. Therein the at- tractive nature of angelic life is understandable. By comparison, the earthly experience of hu- man life is clumsy, limited and vulnerable. But, against many heresies which have attempted to intellectually shake off the weaknesses of our mortal coil, the Church has always upheld the one truth that gives the body potential glory far beyond that of the greatest angels, Christ Je- sus Himself. Sharing equality with God, He emptied Himself and accepted to take on our flesh. He did not do that for any other reason but out of the Father’s love for us. Jesus is God incar- nate, enfleshed, embodied, so that we can see the One Whom we worship and by His grace share in His divinity. Even as I write these very familiar words, my heart begins to race and my skin grows goosebumps. In the days to come, as we celebrate the Archangels on September 29 and Guardian An- gels on October 2, you might open the Catechism of the Catholic Church and read about the angels in paragraphs 328-336. You might also pray to the angels thanking them for their min- istry from God and petitioning them for the needs of the world. But I would certainly suggest that you meditate through their splendor on the glory destined in Christ for you and every hu- man person created in God’s image and likeness. That is our reality and it is served in humble joy by every angel obedient to God out of love for you. Father Woodrow Pace
