FAZtor’s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora A film crew was on location deep in the desert. One day an old Indian went up to the director and said, "Tomorrow rain." The next day it rained. A week later, the Indian went up to the director and said, "Tomorrow storm." The next day there was a hailstorm. "This Indian is incredible," said the director. He told his secre-tary to hire the Indian to predict the weather for the remaining of the shoot. However, after several successful predictions, the old Indian didn't show up for two weeks. Finally the director sent for him. "I have to shoot a big scene tomorrow," said the director, " and I'm depending on you. What will the weather be like?" The Indian shrugged his shoulders. " Don't know," he said. " My radio is broken." It was a very interesting and meaningful way of cele-brating the new year of the church on the first Sunday of Advent - a blackout Sunday, reminiscent of the olden days where religious practices were celebrated in the catacombs. The church was without electricity for most of the masses. The power came back on towards the mid-dle of the 11:30AM mass, reflecting the hope and the light that shine in this Advent season. The rain is back and so are the leaks. While people were looking at the floor hoping to find their way, I was looking at the walls and ceiling hoping not to find any leaks. The drop of water from the sacristy’s ceiling could not be denied and the puddle in the rectory’s garage could not be left unnoticed. All I could say was “Ayayay! Oh why, oh why?” But for every problem there is always a solution. Be-yond those thick clouds is the beautiful sunshine. Indeed, the sun came up later that blackout Sunday morning. Everything will be bright again. To solve a problem, to tackle the demands in life, to face every endeavor, the best advice is to start with a prayer. As a man once said to his minister, “Pastor, you never asked for money, but for sure prayed for it.” In my case, I guess that’s where I failed. I must have not prayed enough. We are still $9000 shy for our Archbishop’s An-nual Appeal. And as the year is ending quickly, my heart is palpitating. But I cannot lose hope. Together we will pray hard! We are in the season of hope. We are in the season of great miracles. Although sometimes we need to create our own miracle, you can also be the instrument of miracles. At this time of the year, some of you might be inun-dated with requests to give to charities. Please consider Holy Name of Jesus Church as a recipient of your 2012 tax-deductable donation. Your parish is a good place to make a contribution and your year-end gift could certainly help the parish with its needs. Thank you for your prayers and for the miracles in you!

HOLY NAME LADIES AID SOCIETY Next Sunday, members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Baskets will be by the exits.

THE YOUTH GROUP MEETS EVERY 1st & 3rd Sunday after the 9:30 AM Mass.

The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve

By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

"Va can II was by inten on a pastoral council. It did not devel-op new dogmas to correct errors of the faith. It was doctrinal in principle, but pastoral in its presenta on." ‐ U.S. Cardinal William J. Levada

"It was a moment of extraordinary expecta on. Great things were about to happen." - Pope Benedict XVI, regarding the opening of the Second Va can Council.

The Second Va can Council, also known as Va can II, through its developed and then pronounced cons tu ons, addressed issues regarding the nature of the Church (Lumen Gen um), the Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium), and scripture and divine revela on (Dei Verbum). The impact on the Church via these cons tu ons has not lessened over me, and since many of us were children or, perhaps, not even born during the me of Va can II, a 50th anniversary overview might be considered helpful and welcomed.

Please note, I only ask the ques ons--all answers come directly from the actual Council documents found on the www.Va can.va website.

Ques on: The Dogma c Cons tu on on the Church, Lumen Gen um, is one of the most significant products of Va can II. Into what sec ons is it divided?

Answer from Lumen Gen um:

1. THE MYSTERY OF THE CHURCH

2. ON THE PEOPLE OF GOD

3. ON THE HIERARCHICAL STRUCTURE OF THE CHURCH AND IN PARTICULAR ON THE EPISCOPATE

4. THE LAITY

5. THE UNIVERSAL CALL TO HOLINESS IN THE CHURCH

6. THE RELIGIOUS

7. THE ESCHATOLOGICAL NATURE OF THE PILGRIM CHURCH AND ITS UNION WITH THE CHURCH IN HEAVEN

THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF GOD IN THE MYS-TERY OF CHRIST AND THE CHURCH Ques on: How does Lumen Gen um define "the Laity?"

Con nued next column ——->>>

Answer from Lumen Gen um: The term laity is here under-stood to mean all the faithful except those in holy orders and those in the state of religious life specially approved by the Church. These faithful are by bap sm made one body with Christ and are cons tuted among the People of God; they are in their own way made sharers in the priestly, prophe cal, and kingly func ons of Christ; and they carry out for their own part the mission of the whole Chris an people in the Church and in the world.

Editor’s Note (Jerry Back): To mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Va can Council, let's take me over the next several weeks to review this historic council and many of its teachings. Par cular a en on will be made to Lumen Gen um's "The Laity" and "Call to Holiness" chapters. May this series of ar cles encourage all of us to dive deeper into the actual documents of Va can II and answer the Coun-cil's "call to holiness."

Dear Holy Name Families, I wrote to our school families yesterday that Natasha Holmes, our 7th grade student, passed away on Satur-day, December 1, as a result of her long battle with brain cancer. Natasha was at home with her parents and sister when she died. Natasha came to Holy Name as a 6th grade student. Her parents looked at many schools and decided on our school because they wanted Natasha to be safe and happy. Last evening Mrs. Holmes told me that it was the best decision she and her husband made for Natasha. Natasha was unable to attend class this school year, but she received emails, cards, gifts and homework assign-ments from teachers, staff members and classmates. She did homework as often as she could as a way of be-ing connected to school. The Holy Name Community had Team Natasha, wrist-band and Patxi’s Pizza fundraising activities and raised a significant amount of money. This money benefits the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, which supports pio-neering research and life-saving treatment at medical centers including UCSF where Natasha was a patient. The Holy Name School community was blessed to have Natasha as a student, classmate and friend. Please continue to bring in baby items for our Christ Child Layette Drive. There are many clothes, blankets, diapers etc. surrounding our manger and beautiful nativi-ty scene already, but we would like to donate as many items as possible to needy mothers and their babies dur-ing this holiday season. This Friday, December 7, we will have a $2.00 free dress day to benefit Firemen’s Toys for Tots. Student Council members will purchase toys, stuff them in large bags and bring them to the firehouse on 45th Avenue. These toys will be distributed to children in San Francisco. We are a community who shares our blessings with oth-ers. Thank you for your support during the Advent sea-son. (Please note the Advent prayer further down in this bulletin.) God bless you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos

HOLY NAME SEASON OF GIVING MISSIONARY CHILDHOOD ASSOCIATION (MCA) Students will be bringing home Advent boxes today. The money collected from these boxes will go toward the Mis-sion Childhood Association (formerly called the Holy Childhood Association). Your generosity is always appre-ciated. Please return all boxes before December 19. Thank you.

TOYS FOR TOTS FREE DRESS There will be a $2.00 collection for Toys for Tots this Fri-day, December 7. You may have Free Dress with your donation.

CHRIST CHILD LAYETTE DRIVE Thank you for sending in new, newborn for the Christ Child Layette. Holy Name School has traditionally sent hundreds of items in to clothe underprivileged newborns.

CLOTHING DRIVE Please bring in useable clothing that can be donated to the underprivileged of San Francisco. The collection will continue until Friday, December 14.

HOLY NAME SCHOOL

Reflecting on God’s Word On most days since early October, the students in the college residence in which I live have been eagerly and insistently bouncing Christmas carols off walls and into hallways. It began with occasional songs on the piano. Soon after, the Christmas CDs were brought out, and a week later one of them came upon an old turntable and some Sinatra Christmas LPs. As they left for Thanksgiv-ing vacation, they each reminded me that the radio would begin playing Christmas music all day long on the day after Thanksgiving. As a result of all this I’ve found myself wondering what it is that’s driven these twenty-year-olds toward such early visions of Christmas sugarplums. I’ve come to believe that beneath all the glitter draped and swagged with ribbons and bows over these days, deeper longings are at play, longings beyond desire for the newest iPod or the latest cell phone, longings for community or healed relationships, longings too for peace among nations and for some sort of equality among peo-ple. Curiously, such deepened longings are never marketed by any hype. Yet like Christmas spirit, they just seem to sprout wherever the human spirit finds a niche. I suppose one could make the observation that a twenty-year-old’s longing for Christmas is little more than leftover nostalgia for childhood Santas and once-upon-a-time daydreams. Maybe so. Yet Paul once wrote to the Philippian commu-nity that such urgings for goodness all begin with God and that ultimately “the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Je-sus” (Philippians 1:6). In other words, these deeper long-ings, they seem to be God’s doing, and who are we to put them on a timetable? —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. Living God’s Word Advent is about the very place from which all of our dreams begin—in God. It’s where gorges of human pain and suffering are filled and where mountains of injustice are brought low. It’s the way God begins to lead the people home to where it all began. Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
