Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On November 27, 2011, the English-speaking Catholic Church in the United States will begin using a new translation of the prayers that are used at Mass. A series of questions and answers on this topic will appear here each week to help explain the thinking behind these changes. Please consider today’s item below.

Why is there a need for a new translation?

Pope John Paul II issued the third edition of the Missale Romanum (the Latin text of the Roman Missal) during the Jubilee Year 2000. This new edition included many new texts requiring translation. In addition, the experience of the years after the Second Vatican Council gave rise to a desire for more formal and literal translations of the original Latin texts. This new translation will employ the best of what we have learned about translation and liturgical language in two generations of celebrating the Liturgy in the vernacular. It will provide an opportunity to reflect ever more deeply on the eucharistic celebration that lies at the heart of the Church’s life. (Copyright 2010, USCCB, Washington, DC. Used with permission. Thank you to all who continue to respond for the 2011 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Our current pledge total has risen to $157,758.00, which is 165.4% of our goal of $95,371.00, and already more than 65% of our stretch goal of $242,021.00. Let’s see what we can do together to reach this year’s stretch goal. Won’t you please take a moment to fill out a pledge card, available in the church or rectory? Your gift is a concrete example of being a good steward of God’s gifts.

Reflection on Today’s Gospel

Floods exact a tragic toll (as do earthquakes and other natural disasters), especially for the poor whose homes are built on hillsides and without adequate foundations. Last year the news was full of stories from Pakistan, Nigeria, Thailand and Southern China. Thousands of homes were swept away in the torrential rains that engulfed cities and villages, leaving countless families homeless. Last autumn the eruption of Indonesia’s Mount Merapi killed 49 people and forced 75,000 to flee when the government ordered evacuation off the mountain. We are well aware of the devastating earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and New Zealand. Jesus used the image to teach us to build our house of faith on the rock of God’s word. Jesus implies that we may give lip service to this word, but that deep down, we may not be so faith-filled. With our weak faith, we find ourselves on shifting sands in the path of floodwaters. Our house of faith might be swept away in an instant. The gospel urges us to take stock of where we are. If we are not standing on rock, we had better get there fast. We delay at our own peril.

Where Have All the Catholics Gone? There are approximately 12 Million school aged Catholic boys and girls in the United States. Religious Education and Catholic Schools educate approximately 6 Million School age children.

Where are the other 6 Million? Jesus, as Master Teacher, addressed His apostles and charged them with the responsibility to “Go, teach all Nations.” As His disciples, we are charged with this same responsibility! Catholic parents and guardians, through baptism, promised to raise their children in the Catholic faith. While some may attend church regularly, are they really being taught their faith, or just fulfilling a requirement? We adults complain about the state of our society, the lack of moral and ethical values, the quality of our public educational systems, but what are we doing about it?

Transfiguration Academy Has An Answer. The Catholic School is unique. It is a community of learners and educators, administrators and parents. It is a faith community of students and teachers who come together to make Christ present in their lives. As a Catholic school, Transfiguration Academy has a twofold purpose, learning and believing. To be an exemplary Catholic school there must be the proper balance of both. We are particularly mindful of our mission as Catholic educators to balance:

SCHOLARSHIP, SPIRITUALITY AND SERVICE.
