Photos of Roseville Area Senior Program men and women who served in the United States military or RASP family members will be on display in the Senior Lounge November 1-14.
“We are proud to honor those who have served our country,” says Norm Kunselman, RASP Coordinator. “They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The stories behind each one of these veteran’s photos speaks volumes.”
To all service men and women on Veterans Day (November 11) and everyday, thank you for protecting our freedoms and keeping our country strong.
Complimentary coffee and tea is available to all veterans in the RASP Senior Lounge November 6-10.

Kari Kearns and Tiffany Jones (above) from Cherrywood Pointe Senior Living kept busy scooping at the RASP Ice Cream Social August 15. Roy Halvorson (above right)joined Lara Hermanson, music therapist at Cherrywood Pointe, as he sang a hilarious song about the “golden years.” Helen Soren-son (right) is served ice cream as she prepares to join friends and enjoy the music. The RASP Ice Cream Social was sponsored by Cherrywood Pointe of Roseville & Cherrywood Pointe of Roseville at Lexington.

Honoring Our RASP Veterans
2 | Roseville Area Schools | November/December 2017
Writing this column conjures up thoughts of family and friends as we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving and the holidays – Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Mawlid. It’s a time for coming together and giving thanks.
There’s that famous adage, “You can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family.” For some, friends are closer in heart than family. We often align our lives to those who share similar likes and dislikes, values, interests, political views, and dismiss family members for their differing perspectives and beliefs. Perhaps, like me, you know family members and friends who will not celebrate the upcoming holidays together because of the differences that they have with their families. I can’t help but think how sad it is that it has come to this. Because they can’t have a respectful discourse and honor one another for
not what their political views might be.
Listening, compassion and understanding deserve a place at the holiday table this year…along with family members we may otherwise want to cast aside. Give them the gift of you. You at your best. Granted, it may not be easy. Heck, let’s face it. It may take all your gumption, but this gift has the potential for a lasting impact. Hopefully, they will share the same gift with you in return.
You may even want to present them with a wrapped package. When opened, ta da! They will discover an olive branch. :-)
Wishing you and yours the best of the
holidays!
!"#$
P.S. Speaking of gifts, I hope you will remember RASP and the great services (Meals on Wheels, Transportation, counseling and support), and all the programming and activities that are provided, when you receive our Annual Giving Campaign letter.
Getting Help – For people who don’t think they need itOne of the toughest issues is getting help for your loved ones who don’t think they need assistance. How do we ask them in a respectful way that in-home services would make their lives easier, safer and healthier?
Many of our older adults do not want to pay the price for services and others think it’s a waste of money. Of course, some of them believe they are doing just
They don’t want their children controlling their lives or their pocketbooks. So how do we phrase the questions without getting them upset? You need to be respectful with words and actions or it may ruin your relationship. Here are some suggestions:
Meals on Wheels
1) Would you like to have a hot nutritious meal brought into your home by a neighborhood volunteer who is happy to see you and ask how your day is?
2) Doesn’t cooking and cleaning make you tired and take away your energy to have fun?
3) Don’t you want to pamper yourself like your friends who never complain about cooking?
where you can pick and choose the number of meals you want each week Start with three meals to see if they like it. Let them know cancelling a meal is easy. They can give RASP a 24 hour notice. If they’re not home they can use a cooler and we’ll drop it off.
Transportation
If you have concerns about your parent’s driving, here are some suggestions:
1) Ask your parent to take you for a ride. This way you can see how they drive. Do not criticize while they are driving.
2) Tell their doctor your concerns and a letter will be written to the Department of Transportation asking your parent to come in for a driver’s test.
3) Take your parent for a driver’s evaluation test through AARP or Courage Center. If your parent fails the test, discuss transportation options.

RASP has two programs – Medical Transportation to appointments with a stop at the pharmacy. We also have the Roseville Shuttle Bus that can help with your errands in the Roseville Area School District boundaries and select areas beyond.
Social Activities
I have brought many older adults to community centers and watched how their eyes light up as they notice a new world around them. Many seniors spend all day in their homes.
1) Ask your loved one if they would like to go out to lunch at the Flaming Spoon Restaurant. Hours are from 11:00-12:15 pm. , Monday-Friday.
2) Show them around the senior area
personal tour.
3) Find out what activities they like and RASP will get them involved. We can even provide the transportation.

News from Roseville Area Schools
Last year’s launch of the Partners for the Future initiative was wonderfully successful with more than 100 volunteers working with students in Roseville Area Schools. Partners for the Future initiative pairs community members, businesses, and organizations with students to provide
reading and mentoring support. “We
know that students who interact with
caring, committed adults are more
likely to succeed academically and
professionally,” says Superintendent
Aldo Sicoli.
To ensure community members have a number of opportunities to work with
students, Partners for the Future is focusing on:• Mentoring: Creating one-on-one supportive relationships between students and community volunteers • Tutoring: Providing reading support to elementary-age students• Creating Career Connections: Identifying work-based learning opportunities such as onsite visits and internships
This is your opportunity to have a direct impact on the life of a student in our community. We truly believe stu-dents “win” when community members step up to support their academic goals and needs. At the same time, com-munity members — and the broader community — will grow stronger when youth feel supported.

Thank You Sky!
Schuyler “Sky” Gillespie was the interim Roseville Meals on Wheels Program Assistant this past summer while Tara Garvin was out on medical leave.
“I knew the minute Sky started training that everyone was in good hands during my absence,” said Tara. “He enthusiastically jumped in and was able to navigate the day-to-day operation of Meals on Wheels. It was his ability to learn and his passion for the service that brought me the greatest comfort.”
Sky is the new Adult Basic Education (ABE) Coordinator in Mounds View Schools.
We wish you much success in your new career, Sky!
