SPORTS TOURISMMICHAEL Mabuyakhulu, Kwa-Zulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, shares his thoughts on Sports & Event Tourism Exchange.

DEAR colleagues, I am extremely proud of the fact that the province of KwaZulu-

Natal has secured the right to host the Sport and Events Tour-ism Exchange for 2012 – 2014, Africa’s most important sport event trade show. The provin-cial government of KwaZu-lu-Natal is acutely aware of the important impact which events and conference del-egate spend can have on the economy of our province. However, we also realise that the impact of such events ex-

tends way beyond this simple fact. One of the core ben-efits of hosting such events is the actuality that it builds the knowledge and capacity of our local population in impor-tant realms such ‘the hosting and bidding for major sporting events’ which is the important focal point of the congress component of SETE 2012.

We are hoping that this conference will lead to an

improved understanding amongst the planners and strategy formulators in our re-gion and country of the sig-nificance of sport events and how to secure such events in the most strategic manner.

Durban and KwaZulu-Natal are renowned for their ability to successful host major inter-national events of the like the Soccer World Cup Matches, the Comrades Ultra Mara-thon, Top Gear and the Dusi Canoe Ultra Marathon. I am convinced that SETE 2012 will be also be a key opportunity for this region to showcase its world class sport facilities and ability to host major events.

Our province is also well-known for its conservation ef-forts, natural attractions, pre-historical and historical sites.

Another core benefit of business events is that they stimulate leisure tourism and further business event or tour-ism opportunities. Research has revealed that as many as 20 – 40% of conference delegates and exhibitors that attend a business event and have a stimulating overall ex-perience of the destination in which it is hosted return as leisure tourists and very often with their family and friends.

In addition they very often become key ‘word of mouth’ ambassadors for such regions which assist other potential

leisure tourists and meeting and business delegates to ulti-mately make up their mind to visit or use such a destination as a meeting place.

We have no doubt that you will have this experience in KwaZulu-Natal, an area which we fondly refer to as the ‘Zulu Kingdom”. We look for-ward to hosting you and have no doubt that your visit to our province will be memorable.

Yours Sincerely,

Michael Mabuyakhulu, MPPKwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development and Tourism

SPORTS TOURISMMEMBERS of the public and ex-hibitors are invited to celebrate South Africa’s Olympic heroes at the gala dinner on 12 Sep-tember 2012. Those attending include Olympic swimming gold medallist Chad le Clos.

THE Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) Gala Dinner taking place on 12 September 2012,

which is to kick off the SETE exhibition (12–14 September) and conference (12-13 Sep-tember), has also been cho-sen by SASCOC (South Afri-can Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee) to cel-ebrate the hugely successful South African Olympic Team.

A night of glitz and glamour is guaranteed, with multiple-SAMA winner Lira set to en-tertain a star-studded crowd that will include Durban-born Olympic gold and silver med-alist Chad le Clos. The Gala Dinner will take place at the ICC Durban, and is hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Depart-ment of Economic Develop-ment and Tourism (KZN DEDT)and EThekwini Municipality.

Members of the public will be able to join sponsors, dig-nitaries, and their Olympic he-roes in expressing their grati-tude to our Olympic athletes who flew the South African flag

high at the London Olympics. An evening dedicated to

promoting South African Cul-ture will see welcomes from KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Eco-nomic Development Tourism Mike Mabuyakhulu and Mayor of Durban James Nxumalo, as well as from a selection of ath-letes and sports celebrities.

Autograph and photo op-portunities for guests with ath-letes and personalities will also take place, allowing local, na-tional and international busi-nesses, sports fanatics, spon-sors and supporters a chance to rub shoulders and share in the athletes’ experiences in London.

James Seymour (CEO of the Durban KwaZulu-Natal Convention Bureau, which was responsible for bidding for SETE 2012 - 2014 and acting as the KZN DEDT implement-ing agency for this event) said that “we are looking forward to showcasing and congratu-lating the achievements of our London 2012 Olympic athletes at the SETE 2012 Gala Dinner. By sponsoring the SETE event, KZN DEDT hopes to raise the level of awareness amongst sport and event organisers of the wide range of sporting fa-cilities that exist in Durban, and the rest of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as of the successful track record that this region has in terms of hosting significant

events. SETE is able to success-fully expose major sport and event buyers and organisers to the sporting facilities and sport sponsoring and support agen-cies in South Africa”.

Sugen Pillay, Director for Business Development at TEPG and SETE Conference Director, said that “we are looking for-ward to welcoming home our Olympic athletes, especially gold medalist Chad Le Clos, to the SETE Opening Dinner. These athletes have become brand ambassadors for South Africa and will definitely con-tribute positively to promoting our country as a sports tour-ism destination – something that SETE is striving to achieve. The evening promises to be a memorable one that will showcase South African cul-ture through world class en-tertainment, also providing an opportunity to network with in-dustry leaders”.

Both the SETE conference and exhibition (12-14 Sep-tember) are intended to pro-mote the country as a popular sports and events destination by facilitating relationships be-tween South Africa’s tourism, sport and event industries.

SETE GALA DINNER PAYS TRIBUTE TO OLYMPIANS

SPORTS TOURISMSPORTS and Events Tourism Ex-change (SETE) 2012 organisers’ Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group is proud to announce its partnership with iSportconnect, the world’s largest sports busi-ness community.

THE partnership will bolster both the scope and effi-cacy of Sports and Events Tourism Exchange’s on-

line marketing campaign in the lead up to their event at the ICC Durban later this year (12-14 September).

Tasked with creating syn-ergy between South Africa’s tourism, sport and event indus-tries and promoting the country as a popular sports and events destination, there is a clear op-portunity with SETE 2012 to max-imize communication between the various elements with the help of a powerful specialized social media platform like iS-portconnect, as well as others like Twitter, LinkedIn and Face-book.

SETE Conference Director Sugen Pillay said that “maximis-ing our online presence is a big part of our marketing and PR strategy. Identifying the appro-priate social media platform and choosing from one of the many channels available to ensure that our messages are targeting the right audience is crucial, and in this way the spe-cialised nature of the iSport-connect community is an ideal match. The ability to communi-cate with a captive audience

is crucial, and the user-friendly way in which iSportconnect amalgamates all relevant and useful information renders it a powerful tool in the sports busi-ness industry”.

iSportconnect offers an ex-clusive online platform that brings together thousands of sports business professionals worldwide. With a wide range of applications, iSportconnect combines business and social networking, detailed insights into the latest sports business news and market data, list-ings of business events and ex-ecutive jobs, as well as market analysis to provide a one-stop shop for the sports business community. Existing LinkedIn and Twitter profiles can be syn-chronised and updated from iSportconnect, which also has iPhone and BlackBerry appli-cations. iSportconnect has no introductory fees, and has no limit on communication.

iSportconnect’s Marketing and Partnership Manager Xavi-er Cureau said, “We are very pleased to be contributing to the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange event, as this will fur-ther expand our image in South Africa, and we look forward to promoting a major event from Africa across Europe, USA and the Middle East”.

Oe needs look no further than Africa’s biggest horserac-ing event, the upcoming Vod-acom Durban July (7 July), to see how an effective social media campaign can con-tribute to the success of an event. Dave Macleod, Game-plan Media Managing Direc-

tor, said that “in its 116th year, the Vodacom Durban July poses numerous challenges when communicating to its extremely diverse audience of potential clients, who each have very different expecta-tions of the event. The core racing community thrives on a nourishing stream of online rac-ing communication, betting and studying form online, and take a major race meeting like the Vodacom Durban July in their stride. They are however outnumbered on the day by the tens of thousands of social-ites and fashionistas who need to be reached and inspired to attend this event every year. Social media, and Facebook

in particular, has succeeded in entrenching their loyalty. Re-search done in 2009 showed that just under 20% of the race day attendance came from outside of KZN, in 2011 that fig-ure had grown by 50%, much of which is attributable to the viral ‘July Fever’ that was culti-vated on Facebook. The event Facebook page (The official Vodacom Durban July) is alive with daily banter from its core 6500 followers. Beyond that figure, 60 000 Facebook users a week browse the content of the page and virally the core community that “likes” the page reaches 2 111 244 peo-ple through their viral connec-tions”.

This year’s 2nd annual SETE exhibition will feature a number of high profile international and local exhibitors, as well as more than 60 international buyers who have been attracted by South Africa’s solid reputation as a viable location for events. The two day SETE conference (12-13 September) boasts a line up of respected and influential speakers who will engage and exchange ideas that will ulti-mately enhance South Africa’s sport, tourism, and event in-dustries. As one of the quickest growing types of global travel, the sports tourism industry is es-timated to have contributed over R6 billion to the South Afri-can economy last year.

SPORTS TOURISMCATHSSETA (Culture, Arts, Tour-ism, Hospitality, Sports Sector Education and Training Author-ity) have recently joined this year’s Sports and Events Tour-ism Exchange (SETE) conference (12-13 September) as naming sponsors.

AS one of 21 SETA’s (sec-tor education and train-ing authority) in South Africa, the partnership

of CATHSSETA with the high profile SETE conference is sure to bolster what is already shaping up to be an influential event, featuring the National Sports Tourism Steering committee’s presentation of the national sports tourism strategy, as well as presentations, debates and discussions with a number of high profile international and lo-cal speakers.

CATHSSETA are indeed a fitting sponsor for the confer-ence, which itself looks to stimu-late the exchange of ideas that will enhance the sport, tourism, and event industries in South Africa. According to Mike Tso-tetsi, CATHSSETA CEO, “following South Africa’s successful hosting of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, sports and events tourism was identified as one of the big-gest avenues to be pursued and supported in order to boost South African tourism and contribute

to the economic growth of the country”.

Tsotetsi also said that “CATHSSETA has a responsibility to facilitate skills development within South Africa by creating strategic partnerships to ensure a meaningful contribution to eco-nomic growth across our sports tourism and other sectors. The SETE conference is an existing platform which attracts impor-tant decision makers and key industry stakeholders, and our in-volvement therefore ensures that we have the opportunity to pro-mote our objectives by engag-ing with the relevant audience at a proven successful annual event”.

In support of these objec-tives, CATHSSETA’s primary aim is to create an environment that allows the youth better employ-ment opportunities through skills development and training within the sports tourism industry, whilst also addressing the shortage of skills in critical areas. “CATHSSETA is looking to realise the govern-ment’s priorities of social co-hesion and economic growth through tourism and sport, both of have been identified as play-ing a catalytic role in attracting global tourism for South Africa, and therefore the SETE confer-ence has value for CATHSSETA as it presents a platform for the shar-ing of ideas around issues central to the sports tourism industry”.

According to Director for

Business Development at TEPG and SETE Conference Director Sugen Pillay, “as the official train-ing authority for sport and tour-ism, CATHSSETA’s participation in this year’s SETE confirms the importance of skills development within the sports and tourism in-dustries. Major international sports events like the Olympics demand high levels of service excellence and therefore CATHSSETA’s role will add value to the industry’s at-tempts at bringing more interna-tional events to South Africa, one of SETE’s core objectives”.

Held at the ICC Durban later this year, both the SETE conference and exhibition (12-

14 September) will look to fa-cilitate relationships between South Africa’s tourism, sport and event industries and promote the country as a popular sports and events destination. To this end, the SETE exhibition will fea-ture an estimated 100 exhibitors as well as over 60 international hosted buyers (IHB’s), whilst the conference programme will in-clude presentations and panel discussions anchored by keynote speakers who are all specialists within their respective fields. The National Sports Tourism Steering committee that was appointed at last year’s SETE conference will also be presenting the na-

tional sports tourism strategy at the conference, outlining the key sports events which SASCOC and its partners will be bidding for until 2030. Focused on identifying the key events which will require government’s support between 2013 and 2030, the plan will be discussed and finalized at the conference.

The Sports and Events Tourism Exchange is hosted by the De-partment of Economic Develop-ment and Tourism KZN, and part-nered by CATHSSETA, SASCOC and Tourism KZN.

SPORTS TOURISM

WITH the past tourism focus hav-ing been on the Leisure and Busi-ness sectors, the introduction of the Sports and Events Tourism Exchange (SETE) Exhibition and Conference has played an inte-gral part in promoting the new “sports” trend within the industry.

THE programme includes a talk by KZN MEC for Arts Cul-ture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Sa-

phetha on Kwazulu-Natal as an events destination, followed by Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula who will introduce South Africa as a Sports Tourism Destination. SASCOC will also speak about its role in positioning South Africa as a sports tourism destination.

Other topics to be covered include skills development, Glob-al Communication Strategies for Major Events, sponsorship and bidding.

A highlight is Chris Foy, Head of 2012 Games unit Visit Britain Tourism, who will be taking dele-gates through Visit Britain’s Glob-al Strategy for London 2012.

Sports and Events Tourism Ex-change provides a platform to: Pursue bidding and hosting of major international events; Pro-mote South Africa as a training destination for northern hemi-sphere athletes in their winter months and Promote South Af-rica as a destination for social

participants in sport, exploiting our golf courses, beaches,

stadiums and hiking trails. It also promotes the provinces and what they have to offer.

Sports tourism and Mega Events in South Africa is esti-mated to contribute more than R6 billion to our tourism industry. More than 10% of foreign tourists come to South Africa to watch or participate in sports events, with spectators accounting for 60% to 80% of these arrivals.

Research undertaken by South African Tourism on the im-pact of the Confederations Cup and the Lions Rugby Tour, found that the two events brought in approximately 52 000 visitors and contributed an estimated R669 million in direct expenditure to our economy. More than 90% of these visitors indicated that they would return to South Africa and, very importantly, that they would recommend South Africa as a destination to others.

Sport tourism is one of the fast-est growing areas of the global travel and tourism industry. Quite obvious are the links between the Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Networks – spotlight-ing the interplay between these markets and the economies of the driving countries.

Sport and its allied events play an integral part in the develop-ment of all aspects of a countries economy, be it the sociocultural dynamics, job creation, health,

environment or GDP.The pressure to win the bid

to host mega-events and reap the rewards thereof, is evident in the increasingly aggressive bid-ding process that precedes the awarding of mega-events to bidding countries. Eg. London’s bid for the 2012 Olympics – and

the fierce competition from both Paris and Madrid.

ITTFA reports that the UNWTO, has been actively advocating to position sport and mega-events in national tourism develop-ment strategies in order to maxi-mize their potential as a driver of growth and development.

The Sports and Events Tourism Exchange, with the backing and support of both South African Tourism and the dti, will ensure that South Africa is seen as one of the top Sports and Mega Events destinations.

50 INTERNATIONAL BUYERS CONFIRMED

SPORTS TOURISMTEN learners from South Africa’s nine provinces, who are actively involved in school sports ranging from tennis to chess, have been given the opportunity to experi-ence the Olympics live in Lon-don. thanks to CATHSSETA.

A majority of these learn-ers come from rural and impoverished com-munities but through

their determination and perse-verance in wanting to see their lives change for the better, they took the opportunities available to them at school to focus on developing their sporting talents, a move that has now afforded

then the opportunity to experi-ence the world’s greatest sport-ing event live.

SASCOC together with the Culture, Arts, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA) identified an opportunity to build on career and vocational guid-ance for the youth, for which the objective was to identify learn-ers who have already taken part in the International Inspiration Leadership programme which is initiated by the South African British Council, to grow and en-hance their love for sport.

“As a SETA we are respon-sible for Skills Development and Training in the sporting world and have a duty to ensure that we

expose our youth to the many aspects and careers that exist in sport. This tour will ensure that coupled with their leadership qualities, these learners get first hand exposure of what it means to be a professional athlete” says Mike Tsotetsi the CEO of CATHS-SETA.

During their weeklong stay at the Olympics the learners have also played an ambassado-rial role at the Ekhaya, a London Olympics home base of the De-partment of Sport and Recre-ation (SRSA) with the hope that they will use the acquired experi-ence to inculcate a love for sport amongst their peers when they return to their schools and villag-es. CATHSSETA has also undertak-

en to invest R35million in a bursary programme for underprivileged learners around the country over the next three years.

It is our intention to sup-port the education and training

of these learners beyond high school should they still show such keen interest and excel in sport as is currently the case” says Tso-tetsi.

SPORTS TOURISM

SETE aims to analyse success-ful sports tourism industries and consult with industry stakehold-ers.

SHAPING and advancing South Africa’s develop-ment as a sports tourism destination, the National

Sports Tourism Steering commit-tee’s presentation of its 17 year strategy will identify the key in-ternational events that South Africa should bid for, as well as the domestic events that need governmental support, in order to grow the country’s sports tourism industry.

The presentation is sure to garner much interest at the Sports and Events Tourism Ex-change (SETE) conference to be held at the ICC in Durban alongside the second annual SETE exhibition from 12-14 Sep-tember.

Appointed by the South Af-rican Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) at last year’s inaugural SETE conference, Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group brought to-gether the National Sports Tour-ism Steering committee, which was tasked with developing and implementing a national strategy that would outline the key sports events which SAS-COC, as well as its federations

and partners, will be bidding for between 2013 and 2030. Almost a year of research and careful planning and preparation is set to come to fruition when the recommendations of the strate-gy are discussed and adopted at the upcoming SETE confer-ence.

According to SETE confer-ence director Sugen Pillay, the process of forming the strategy first involved the analysis of case studies of global destinations that have successful sports tour-ism industries. Here, countries such as Australia, Brazil, Spain and the United Kingdom were studied and key success indica-tors were identified, which ap-plied locally may contribute to situating South Africa as an in-ternationally competitive sports tourism destination.

Working within and devel-oping existing governmental frameworks, the genesis of the strategy understandably took into account all policies and strategies of South Africa’s gov-ernment institutions relevant to sports and tourism. “The out-come of this analysis resulted in the identification of criteria that will inform government’s deci-sion to invest in and support bids for local events, ensuring that domestic sports events are supported,” said Pillay.

Triangulating the informa-tion gathered by the case stud-ies and the analysis of govern-

mental policy and practice, the next phase involved consulta-tion with key role-players iden-tified by SASCOC, including a sample of national sports fed-erations and tourism stakehold-ers, who provided information on the principal international

events that South Africa should aim to host, as well as the key domestic events that need government support should it wish to bolster the local sports and tourism industries.

Both the SETE conference and exhibition will look to fa-

cilitate relationships between South Africa’s tourism, sport and event industries and promote the country as a popular sports and events destination.

Island offers a truly diverse ex-perience with the swim being in the harbour, and the cycle and run legs taking the ath-letes to the various landmarks on the island including the Limestone pits, Lighthouse and famous WW2 cannon.

The race will consist of a morning sprint distance of a 400m swim, 14km cycle and 4km run with the afternoon race consisting of an 800m swim, 28km cycle and 8km run.

Due to the heavy rain and wind forecast for the original Sunday, Robben Island will not permit ferries to run. Although the weather might improve, the organisers of Tri-Robben island cannot take the risk and cancel

at the last minute, as athletes from out of town are travelling to Cape Town for the event.

The new date will fall on the Saturday of Heritage Week-end and the race schedule will remain the same.

Entries will automatically be transferred to the new date, and refunds are possible.

“We apologise for any in-conveniences caused, but sadly we are at the mercy of the weather gods”, said Grant Kunneke, organizer of Tri-Rob-ben Island. “We still hope to see all athletes at the event on the 22nd of September”.

SPORTS TOURISM

CAROL Weaving of Thebe Ex-hibitions and Projects Group, who are the organisers of Sports and Events Tourism Exchange, explains why sport is important.

How is South Africa ideally suit-ed for sporting events, specifi -cally mega events?WITH the success of hosting the FIFA World Cup and other ma-jor events like the IPL, British & Irish Lions Rugby Tour, Cricket World Cup, Rugby World Cup and other major events – we have the capacity and infra-structure to host more inter-national events. SA was also voted last year by the World Travel Awards as the World’s Best Sports Tourism Destination which reaffi rms our position as a mega events destination.

What is the value of the sport-ing events industry?IT 2011 it was estimated that the sports industry contributes about USD 182 billion to the global tourism economy which translates to an 18% contribu-tion to tourism. The FIFA World Cup contributed about R3.6 bil-lion to the SA economy based on visitors’ direct expenditure during the world cup.

Is this an industry that is grow-ing?THE 2011 estimate of sport contributing 18% to the tour-ism economy globally is 8% up from 2006, which means that the industry is defi nitely grow-ing. Also the travel trends in Europe have changed since the world economic crisis of 2008/09 where research has shown that most Europeans do not travel for leisure purposes but for specifi c reasons – sport being a key driver for European travel.

Is there government support (in the form of incentive or otherwise) in bringing sporting events in to the country?CURRENTLY SA does not have a proactive bidding strategy. Sports Federations have to submit proposals to the Sports Minister via SASCOC for gov-ernment to issue guarantees to bring events into SA. At this year’s SETE conference a plan

developed by THEBE which outlines the key sports events SA should be bidding for over the next 17 years will be dis-cussed. One of the key rec-ommendations of the plan is the establishment of an Events Fund to support bids for events.

What infrastructure would a venue have to have in place to attract a sporting event?IT depends on the event. An Olympic event will require world class infrastructure to accommodate all 26 Olympic codes of sport in one city. An event like the Athletics World Championships will require stadium capacity of 20,000 – so its really event specifi c. The plan which we developed ad-dresses this issue for each sports code

What are the challenges in-volved?FOR most sports federations the lack of funding is a key issue. The lack of adequate world class facilities for most sporting codes is also a major issue. This is mainly the reason why many federations cannot bid for in-ternational events. The plan developed by THEBE and SAS-COC which will be discussed at the conference will hopefully address these challenges.

How big is the inter-school tournament industry?ITS dependent on each sport-ing code. SRSA has a school sports program and I’m not sure how successful this is. Rug-by, cricket and athletics have been successful in this area but other sporting codes and look-ing at this as a future growth opportunity

What are the limitations of sponsorship?DUE to the recent economic crisis most major corporates in SA have withdrawn or reduced their sponsorships from sports – Standard Bank, Sasol, etc. The market for sponsorships is limited and most sponsors are looking for opportunities that will translate into increased sales with less investment. At this year’s SETE conference we have Adidas speaking about the sponsorship trends in sport and what are the implications.

How can a small event man-agement company get in-volved?THE SETE platform is aimed at encouraging collaboration between the sports and tour-ism industries. This is an ideal

platform for event manage-ment companies to promote themselves to the international buyers, government and sports stakeholders. The conference also presents a great oppor-tunity for event companies to

understand the opportunities available within the sports tour-ism industry and government’s strategy to grow this industry.

VENUETHE Durban ICC, the first interna-tional convention centre in South Africa, celebrates its fifteenth an-niversary during August 2012.

“THE Durban ICC has cer-tainly developed its cre-dentials as South Africa’s foremost international

convention centre delivering fifteen years of world class hos-pitality and service to our many clients”, said Durban ICC’s, Chief Executive Officer, Julie-May El-lingson.

The Durban ICC story is re-markable. It is a story of foresight and vision, co-operation, en-deavour, bravery, patience and above all triumph. It is a story that the eThekwini Municipality and the citizens of Durban can be justly proud of.

The formation of Operation Jumpstart, which was created to kick-start development in the city and region, brought together role players from all sectors of the community. Operation Jump-start recognised the role that in-ternational conferences could play in stimulating the economy of the city and recommended as part of its proposals, a propos-al to build an international con-vention centre in Durban. After

many months of discussions and negotiations by the Operation Jumpstart team, the city council approved the proposal to build the centre and the first phase of the development of the Durban International Convention Centre commenced.

The then Durban City Council officially launched its internation-al convention centre project with a media briefing held in Decem-ber 1992. This was followed by a comprehensive feasibility study carried out over nine months by a core team of six consultants supported by additional spe-cialist consultants and included in-depth research programmes and study tours to various Con-vention Centres in Europe. At the time the Durban ICC was one of the single largest investments made by the City of Durban and represented a statement of con-fidence by the city fathers and the people of Durban in the fu-ture growth and development of the city.

November 1994 saw the turning of the first sod for the construction of the Durban ICC by the then premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Frank Mdlalose and the Centre was officially opened on 8 August 1997 by President Nel-son Mandela.

To cater for increasing de-

mand the Durban ICC was ex-panded with the opening of the ICC Arena in March 2007 transforming the centre into the largest flat floor, column free ex-hibitions and meetings space in Africa. Combined with the ICC Exhibition Centre, the Durban ICC can provide up to 33,000m2 of conference and exhibition space to clients. The full ICC complex was renamed the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Con-vention Centre Complex in 2007 in remembrance of the former Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of the African National Congress.

The Durban ICC has proved a pivotal money-spinner for the KwaZulu-Natal economy. It has generated in excess of R1-billion in income over the past fifteen years and firmly established Dur-ban on the global conferenc-ing map. The centre has been the trailblazer for the growth of the conferencing, meetings and exhibitions industry in South Af-rica with the other major cities in South Africa following Durban’s example in constructing conven-tion centre’s of their own, which collectively have catapulted South Africa into the 37th ranked global conferencing destination and Africa’s number one confer-ence destination in terms of the

ICCA 2011 rankings. “The Durban ICC was originally developed as a catalyst for economic devel-opment and growth at a cost of R900-million and it has more than delivered on its return on invest-ment for the city and province.” commented Ellingson.

The Durban ICC has contrib-uted significantly to the econ-omy of Durban over the past fifteen years with economic impact studies indicating that the centre contributed approxi-mately R2.7-billion to the gross domestic product of KwaZulu-Natal during the 2010/11 finan-cial year. In the same year 3,376 people were employed directly in the province as a result of the activities of the Durban ICC with a further 4,462 employed indi-rectly throughout the country. In addition the Durban ICC was a net generator of R467-million in foreign exchange earnings in the same year. Measured over the past five years up until the 2011/12 financial year the Dur-ban ICC has made a cumulative contribution to GDP of R11.4-bil-lion.

The Durban ICC has become a world-renowned landmark in the city and has developed an enviable reputation with its ability to host the largest and most com-plex international conferences and meetings including events such as the XII Non-Aligned Sum-mit in 1998, the Commonwealth heads of Government Meeting in 1999, XIII International AIDS Conference in 2000, the World Conference on Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and related Intolerances in 2001, the 2002 African Union Summit and the COP17/CMP7 Climate Change Conference in 2011.

Reports from Durban’s lead-ing hoteliers are fulsome in their appreciation of the value that the Durban ICC contributes to the success of their own busi-nesses. Many have indicated that their businesses would have consistently performed at lower levels without the presence of the Durban ICC attracting thou-sands of delegates into the city on an annual basis. Large events such as the annual Indaba Travel Trade Show and other large con-ferences and exhibitions consis-tently contribute to the bottom line of Durban’s hotel, transport, restaurant and retail sectors proving the importance of the

Durban ICC as a catalyst for economic growth and sustain-ability in Durban. “For those who are still skeptical about the value of the Durban ICC another way of looking at its contribution is to imagine how things might have been if it had not been built. The foresight of those who originally conceptualised the Durban ICC as an important catalyst for eco-nomic growth and development cannot be over estimated. The fact that the Durban ICC was the trailblazer for the meetings and conventions industry in South Af-rica is an enormous accolade for those who pioneered its devel-opment in the city” said Ellingson.

The Durban ICC will continue to act as a catalyst for the eco-nomic well being of the tourism industry in the city and region with a very important role in off-setting the seasonality that ex-ists in the leisure tourism industry, contributing significantly towards the well-being and sustainability of the hotel, transport, restaurant and retail sectors in the city.

During the past fifteen years the Durban ICC has been the recipient of many prestigious awards but more recently the centre was again voted Africa’s Leading Meetings and Confer-ence Centre by the World Travel Awards. This is the tenth time the Durban ICC has been awarded this prestigious award and has been nominated in this category again this year. The centre is rat-ed as a 5-star venue by the Tour-ism Grading Council of South Af-rica. In addition the Centre is ISO 9001, 14001 and 22000 certified and HACCP accredited, which are internationally recognised quality standards focused on service delivery, environmental management and food safety. The Durban ICC is the only con-vention centre is the country to have achieved all these certifi-cations.

“The success of the past years is indicative of a team that has been totally committed to ex-cellence and creating a sustain-able convention centre. Our staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Durban ICC as a venue has the capacity and capabil-ity to host both small intimate events and some of the largest and most complex events in the world.” said Ellingson.

Thank You

Special thanks to all our Partners, Sponsors and Supporters

On behalf of Thebe Exhibitions & Pro-jects Group, I would

like to thank all our Partners, Sponsors and Exhibitors for the continued support throughout the build-up and planning of the Sports & Events Tourism Exchange 2012.

The success of this event is due to this support, from both the public and pri-vate sectors, and to the combined belief that we all, as South Africans, have what it takes to successfully host events, both large and small, international and na-tional – and to compete in

the bidding process on a global level. In our introduction to the inaugural SETE last year, we communicated to all that the time had come for all South African enti-ties to unite to work on the sustainability of the world-class infrastructure that was

built to accommodate the World Cup in 2012. It gives us great pleasure, as the or-ganisers of SETE, to see our fellow South Africans come together to plan how best to make this happen. I would like to say a very special thank you to James Seymour and his team at

the Durban Kwa-Zulu Natal Convention Bureau for their incredible efforts towards ensuring the success of this event.Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.
