Most of Canada’s population lives within 100 miles of the country’s southern border. Why do you think that is?

How do you think life along Canada’s southern border is different from life in the far northern part of the country?

How do you think life in the eastern part of the country is different from life in the western part?

How does where you live influence how you live?

ESSENTIAL QUESTION

Introduction• Geographers often break Canada into 5 different regions.

• What factors do you think might lead to differences in the way people live in these regions?

Population

Which regions have the highest populations, and why? The lowest?

What factors would make someone want to live, or not live, in each region?

Next:Read Section 3.4, pages 56-57, Settlement Patterns: Who Lives Where?

Make changes to your graphics on the laminated map as you read.

Write two key things you learned about population for each region.
