iguales a Dios. El resultado fue caos. Sufrimiento y

lengua.

Este mensaje de unidad en el

Espíritu se repite en la lectura de

Corintios. Hay diferentes dones

espirituales, muchos modos de

servir. Un modo no es “superior,” ni

una persona es “mejor” que otra.

Hay un solo Espíritu que obra todo

en todos.

THE DAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

John’s Gospel tells us that when Jesus “breathed”

on the disciples, the Holy Spirit came into them,

empowering them to forgive sins and to gather all

people into union with one another.

The book of Genesis had explained the divisions

among nations with the story of the Tower of

Babel. In rebellious pride, human beings had

struggled to become equal to God. The result was

chaos, strife, the inability even to speak the same

language among themselves. Today’s reading

from Acts tells how the Spirit has just the

opposite effect. Strangers from many nations hear

and understand one another, each in his or her

own tongue.

This message of unity in the Spirit is

repeated in the reading from

Corinthians. There are many gifts,

many ways to serve. One way is not

“higher,” nor one person “better”

than another. There is but one Spirit,

who accomplishes all the different

works we do, acting through us.

VOCATION CROSSES: “Vocations Don’t Just Happen. Ask Someone.”

The Serra Club of Reno has provided St. Francis of Assisi with 5 beautiful wooden Vocation Crosses for

sharing amongst our parishioners. You are invited to take one of these crosses to your home and say the

Vocation Prayer (provided with cross) along with your own daily prayers. You can sign-out one of these

Vocation Crosses from the office during the week. We simply ask that you return the cross within two

weeks so that others can share in this prayer experience.

Serra International is formally recognized by the Holy See as the global lay apostolate for vocations in the

Catholic Church. Named after Franciscan Blessed Junípero Serra, who founded missions up and down the

California coast, the Club supports our priests, fosters vocations to the ministerial priesthood and religious

life, and calls its members to holiness.

CRUZADA De VOCACIONES:

Pídale a alguien."

Office of the Bishop Pentecost Sunday

2013

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

On this Solemnity of Pentecost, I am announcing my decision, with the recommendation of the

Priest’s Council, to convoke a diocesan synod. In the Church’s tradition, a synod is the premier

assembly in a diocese held from time to time and whose purpose is to assist the bishop in addressing

the broad concerns of the local Church.

In the Acts of the Apostles, we hear how, after Christ’s ascension, the disciples with one

accord gathered in prayer in the upper room, awaiting the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. In a similar

way, a diocesan synod is a moment for us as the Church in northern Nevada to gather to pray

together, to reflect and discern together what it is the Holy Spirit is calling and directing us to be and

do to fulfill our mission in the particular circumstances of our time and state.

The last and only time the Diocese of Reno held a synod was in 1958. This is not unusual

because there is a great deal of effort and time involved in a synod. It doesn’t just happen but takes

preparation and, most importantly, the participation of as many Catholics in the diocese as possible.

It is vital that all the voices of the faithful be heard. So a major part of the process of the synod is

broad consultation, gatherings in parishes, for you to pray, reflect, discuss and express ideas on what

we are called to be and do as the Church in northern Nevada. What is heard in these gatherings will

then be brought for deliberation to the synod proper, an assembly made up of representatives from all

the parishes and missions, clergy and religious. As you can imagine, such a process will take some

time, at least two years.

What outcomes can we anticipate from the synod? I would hope a unified vision of our

mission as Catholics in northern Nevada as well as practical goals for fulfilling that mission and even

particular legislation for the governance of our diocese. While the end result is important, so also is

the entire event of the synod itself, which includes not only the assembly but also the gatherings that

precede it. I pray that the synod process will build up and strengthen our communion, for our unity in

faith and in charity is necessary for our mission to proclaim the Gospel and gives witness to the love

of Christ.

This letter is to announce the convocation of the diocesan synod. In the coming months, there

will be more information on the synod. In the meantime, I ask you to join me in invoking the Holy

Spirit to inspire the work of the synod, so that we as the Church in northern Nevada may be renewed

and strengthened to let the light of Christ shine brightly in our midst.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo

Bishop of Reno

Office of the Bishop Domingo de Pentecostés

2013

Rvdsmo. Randolph R. Calvo

Obispo de Reno

Chuck and Cathy Cecil continue serving this important ministry which helps to feed several families in our

North Lake Tahoe community. Collection of nonperishable foods on the last weekend of each month helps support

this mission. The community and visitors of St. Francis have been very generous in serving those who are struggling

and hungry, and we are so grateful! The outpouring of love and gratitude from those receiving your gifts is immense.

If it is more convenient for you to make a monetary donation, you may enclose it in an envelope and drop it off

at the parish office downstairs. Checks may be made payable to St. Francis of Assisi, earmarked for “Food for the

Hungry.” You can also contribute through the Online Giving program at our website. (sftahoe.org) If you have any

questions, please feel free to call Cathy or Chuck at 622-3378.

Issues of Peace and Justice

On this Pentecost Day, the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church by the

Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace reminds us: “Thanks to the Spirit, the Church

is aware of the divine plan of unity that involves the entire human race, a plan destined

to reunite in the mystery of salvation wrought under the saving Lordship of Christ all

of created reality, which is fragmented and scattered. From the day of Pentecost, when the Resurrection is

announced to diverse peoples, each of whom understand it in their own language, the Church fulfils her

mission of restoring and bearing witness to the unity lost at Babel. Due to this ecclesial ministry, the human

family is called to rediscover its unity and recognize the richness of its differences, in order to attain

‘full unity in Christ’” (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church by the Pontifical Council for

Justice and Peace, #431). We, in this country, are today challenged to “rediscover [this] unity” as we

consider seriously the need for Immigration Reform.

The Justice for Immigrants website states, “The Church believes that current immigration laws and policies

have often led to the undermining of immigrants’ human dignity and have kept families apart. The existing

immigration system has resulted in a growing number of persons in this country in an unauthorized capacity,

living in the shadows as they toil in jobs that would otherwise go unfilled. Close family members of U.S.

citizens and lawful permanent residents must wait years for a visa to be reunited. And, our nation’s border

enforcement strategies have been ineffective and have led to the death of thousands of migrants”

Fomentar La Paz y La Justicia
