SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND THE TRINITY

If you sometimes find the Church’s teachings incomprehensible, be encouraged by today’s Gospel. Recognizing how bewildered his disciples have become, Jesus says, “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.” Then he promises that “the Spirit of truth” will come to make things clear. Even with the coming of the Spirit, we never fully understand. Today we hear the ancient poetry of the book of Proverbs, singing of God’s wisdom “playing on the surface of his earth,” delighting in humankind. We hear Paul boasting of his joy—not only in the blessings God sends, but even in “our afflictions.” Theologians wrestle with the mystery of the Trinity; with the help of the Spirit they make that divine mystery a little more clear to the Church. We understand a little. But mostly we listen, we pray, and we ask the Spirit for more clarity

Peace and Justice / La Paz y La Justicia

Issues of Peace and Justice

The social doctrine of the Church grew out of our understanding of the Trinity. The Church’s call to renew those social structures that do not reflect true love of neighbor is based on God’s loving, relational nature. “The Face of God, progressively revealed in the history of salvation, shines in its fullness in the Face of Jesus Christ crucified and risen from the dead. God is Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; truly distinct and truly one, because God is an infinite communion of love. God’s gratuitous love for

humanity is revealed, before anything else, as love springing from the Father, from whom everything draws its source; as the free communication that the Son makes of this love, giving himself anew to the Father and giving himself to mankind; as the ever new fruitfulness of divine love that the Holy Spirit pours forth into the hearts of men. By his words and deeds, and fully and definitively by his death and resurrection, Jesus reveals to humanity that God is Father and that we are all called by grace to become his children in the Spirit, and therefore brothers and sisters among ourselves” (#31). Let us keep this Trinitarian love in mind as we struggle with the current issues around immigration law reform. “The Church has a responsibility to shine the message of God on this issue and help to build bridges between all parties so that an immigration system can be created that is just for all and serves the common good, including the legitimate security concerns of our nation” (Justice for Immigrants, http://www.justiceforimmigrants.org/faq.html) .

A Day of Remembrance—Arlington National Cemetery

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service to our nation. On this National Day of Remembrance, services are held around the globe honoring those patriots who have fought and died in preserving our nation’s freedoms and helping our Allies deter tyranny. One of our most sacred and hallowed grounds for these patriots is Arlington National Cemetery. It is the final resting place for over 330,000 of America’s finest men and women. It is also the home of the Tomb of the Unknowns, where the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) provides a constant 24/7 vigil, guarding the tomb with a sentry of the highest caliber. It is considered a true honor to be able to pay your respects on Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery. A couple of years ago, at a ceremony presided over by President Barack Obama, Richard and Katy Lyons were honored to be the guests of the legendary Society of the 4th Infantry Division (Rock of the Marne) at Arlington, as they participated in two distinct military ceremonies paying respect to our war fallen of past and present. In his speech to the gathered crowd of 1,000 visitors, President Obama stated, “across our nation we’ll pause to honor all those who’ve given their last full measure of devotion in defense of our country. Theirs was the ultimate sacrifice, but it is one that every man and woman who wears America’s uniform is prepared to make so that can live free. The men and women of our Armed Forces are the best our nation has to offer, and they deserve nothing but the absolute best in return.” Rich and Katy first served as the lone wreath bearers in the ceremony honoring the 3rd Infantry Division located at their memorial inside Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony included a brief review of the divisions’ numerous campaign accomplishments, a reading from the book “To Hell and Back,” and the playing of Amazing Grace by famed Piper, Eric Rice-Johnston. A moment of silence was observed honoring the service and ultimate sacrifice made by the Marne Soldiers. Following the 3rd Infantry Division ceremony, Rich and other—including his daughter Donna and granddaughter Brittany—humbly participated in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

“Memorial Day is a national day to remember. We remember and honor not only our war dead but also all who were in the military service. Katy and I were honored to take part in the ceremony and place the wreath in honor of the 3rd Infantry Division, the “Rock of the Marne”. It was also an honor to participate with the Old Guard—they are the custodians of Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknowns. Their military history is legendary! It truly is a day that we will always also remember.” Lyons said.

REMEMBER, TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. RECUERDE, QUE JUNTOS PODEMOS HACER LA DIFERENCIA.
