Captain Lazar’s Message

Captain David Lazar

Commanding Officer Central Station

Recent Activities in the Central

Today I was reflecting on the plans for Halloween thisweekend. As we know, once we get through Halloween, the Holiday Season has arrived and this meanswonderful events, generous giving and a beautifulscenery in the Central District.

Sometimes this may also mean an increase in thefts suchas auto burglaries, retail theft and personal theft. I willbe spending time in Union Square this year primarily onduty working to make sure our visitors are safe. Ofcourse, I will be Christmas shopping off duty as well.

Robberies

Just this afternoon, a woman was on the 100 block of Powell Street, in the middleof the day and with people on the street, when her cell phone was grabbed out ofher hand.

A couple of things to consider to reduce these crimes:

1. Be aware of your surroundings at all times

2. Do not use or display your electronic devices while in public (I often see peoplewalking around with their cell phone in their hand).

3. Place your wallet in your front pocket and be aware of your valuables on thestreet.

4. Zip up and secure your purse and personal belongings. Keep your valuables infront of you.

5. If you are bumped into, immediately check to make sure you still have yourwallet and valuables. Many times, this could be a person attempting to takevaluables out of your pocket.

6. Call 911 if you witness a theft.

Have a wonderful Halloween this weekend. Tomorrow, I will spend time with Dr.Dennis Chew and the children from Gordon J. Lau Elementary school as theyperform their Halloween parade.
