REAdy OR NOt?do you want to know?
Yes? Then the best answer is probably Simon Fraser University.
But if you want to make sure, think about it. This university is designed for people who want to know…
Who is in this world and where do I fit? What is going on with the planet and how can I help? What does opportunity look like and what are the real consequences of my actions? Who am I and how far can I go? What happens when I push this button? Who says you can’t change the world?
Think about what you could do if you knew…
Some of the brightest minds are here: outstanding researchers, awesome professors and amazing students. And they have come to know the difference about studying at SFU, versus ordinary universities: more choice, more experiences, more freedom and a warm community – with a world-class view of the Pacific Rim as well as the future.
If you’re thinking about what you want, you’re already halfway there. If you’re also thinking about the world, you’re right on our doorstep.
Welcome to SFU.
At SFU we believe that you can learn anywhere, any day. So take advantage — learn your whole life and come to us when you want to know more.

there are hundreds of combinations: choose your programSFU is best known for its ground-breaking interdisciplinary approach — which means we don’t put learning in boxes, we keep it out in the open, share it, let ideas and subjects mix and then celebrate the results.
SFU offers programs in eight faculties. Focus on one major program, or combine elements of two or more programs across faculties: our joint programs are what make us unique. Read our list to get you started... it’s all about choice.
There are three SFU campuses, each unique and all linked by Skytrain:
vanCouver – downtown heritage buildings on the east side and now also in the community-focused Woodwards project.
BurnaBy – mountain top with great views, surrounded by forest, comes with residence for 1766 students and an established, sustainable community of 3000.
surrey – award-winning architecture of glass and inspiring lines, connecting campus to the community.
For a campus tour: students.www.sfu.ca/tour
All three campuses operate on SFU’s flexible full-year three term system. Designed to provide students with the maximum amount of flexibility so they can choose their own pace. This flexibility lets you select which of our three terms you want to take courses and allows greater opportunities to intersperse co-op work terms.

WE ARE SO REAdy FOR yOUSFU faculties give you a home baseChoose your own path. Go directly to the future you envision. Or explore. Or maybe constant exploration is the future you envision? Either way, your route goes through the heart of SFU.
Your faculty is home base, but the whole field is open. Take courses in any of our 100+ programs. Sample, branch out, cross boundaries, and cross-pollinate ideas. Choose a major and a minor from different faculties; combine areas of interest to really customize your degree.
We have eight faculties at SFU: applied sciences arts and social sciences business administration communication, art and technology education environment health sciences science
SFU is already well known for successful educational cross-pollination, with nearly 50 joint major programs. But that’s just the beginning. There are countless ways to combine courses, programs, disciplines and ideas, add on special programs and learn in exciting places throughout the community and around the world.
New courses and programs continue to be added to keep the university and our students current and relevant in a society that changes daily.
33192 SFU viewbook 2011_FINAL.indd 6 8/23/10 12:15:56 PM
Start a new venture. Build a career in a leading enterprise. Or improve the business acumen of a not- for-profit organization. All of these results are within your reach as a Business Administration graduate.
The Faculty of Business Administration combines a superior academic program with résumé-building experience that maximizes student talents. The Bachelor of Business Administration program, at both Burnaby and Surrey campuses, immerses you in real business dynamics, ensuring graduates are well-grounded. You can expect classroom, workplace and international experiences.
Create your path to your own individual goals, supported along the way with resources and guidance. And co-op terms are an excellent way to finance your education as you apply what you’re learning, while an
exchange term at a university overseas gives you a window into global cultural and business differences.
Clubs, conferences and competitions are a big part of Business life, providing life-changing and fun opportunities to explore organizations, network with business leaders, hone skills and advance careers. In addition, a dedicated Business Career Management Centre will connect you to resources that prepare you to find that perfect career.
Business graduates are broadly educated, enterprising, socially responsible managers who make positive contributions to their organizations and communities. The Faculty sets high standards. BBA students consistently surpass them.
business.sfu.ca
Faculty of Business AdministrationLaunch an enterprising life.
Understand and change the world around you through explorations in contemporary art, new technology, emerging media, and culture. This brand new Faculty brings several disciplines together in one environment, with some amazing results. You’ll collaborate in innovative research to create novel forms of communication, technology, design and art that influence all aspects of our lives. There’s nothing quite like this Faculty anywhere in the world — and it’s just the sort of radical innovation you’d expect from SFU.
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION You’ll engage in the critical, interdisciplinary study of media and technology with an emphasis on social theory and political economy. Collaborating with other applied scientists, use these combined insights in many areas of the human experience; graduates permeate every career type and sector.
www.cmns.sfu.ca
SCHOOL FOR THE CONTEMPORARY ARTSStudy and produce contemporary art in a dynamic and integrated arts curriculum. Programs in art and culture,
dance, film, music, theatre, and visual art inspire and develop creative artists and scholars who graduate equipped to excel in their fields of interest. The School is now in its stunning new home in downtown Vancouver at the famed Woodwards complex.
www.sfu.ca/sca
SCHOOL OF INTERACTIVE ARTS + TECHNOLOGYThis School, on our Surrey campus, invites you to explore ideas where technology and art meet. This is an education that brings together the science of human experience, the analysis of media and culture, the creation of art, and implementation of new technologies.
www.siat.sfu.ca
TECHONE Also at the Surrey campus, this exciting cohort program is designed to ensure first year is indeed one you’ll remember — and build on.
www.techone.sfu.ca
Faculty of Communication, Art and technology Be where art, technology and media converge.
Explore an abundance of possibilities in unique programs and innovative schools and departments on all three campuses, and forever enrich your life.
The Faculty offers more than 40 programs in the humanities and social sciences, and is home to some of the most legendary interdisciplinary programs—and professors. Dive into a deep pool of knowledge and emerge with the broad perspectives most valued by society. Use the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as a portal to the skills, knowledge and cultural literacy that will allow you to be imaginative and resourceful throughout your life.
Even if your ultimate goal is in a different field, a foundation in arts and social sciences will give you
vital capabilities: critical thinking skills, clear writing and verbal expression, as well as a deep understanding of humanity. And the Faculty is also known for some very cool thinking along the way.
Become empowered to shape your career, through study, research, dialogue and learning experiences beyond the classroom.
Did you know that arts graduates enjoy above-average satisfaction and pay, and that many technology and business leaders started out with a Bachelor of Arts?
www.fass.sfu.ca
Faculty of Arts and Social SciencesEngage your mind in civilization’s vast web of knowledge about itself.
Imagine the future in a community of globally minded applied scientists who seek new and better ways of doing things.
The Faculty of Applied Sciences unites two schools, Computing Science and Engineering Science, in the pursuit of leading-edge research. Boundary-breaking interdisciplinary programs broaden and deepen your learning, while valuable industry placements provide opportunities to gain practical experience both within Canada and beyond.
COMPUTING SCIENCEThe School of Computing Science enjoys an international reputation for solving real world problems. One of Canada’s largest computing programs, the School offers 18 diverse labs, enabling its award-winning work in artificial intelligence, data mining and software
engineering. Interdisciplinary opportunities abound, with two major programs, five joint majors, six concentrations and a specialized dual degree program with Zhejiang University in China.
ENGINEERING SCIENCEPowerfully practical and boldly interdisciplinary, the School of Engineering Science develops solutions to complex technological problems through concentrations in biomedical, computer, electronics, physics, systems, and mechatronic systems engineering. A wireless heart-rate monitor that can instantly determine a pulse and nano robots that swim through the bloodstream collecting important data, are just two examples of impressive SFU-developed technologies that are improving lives around the globe.

Faculty of EducationLearn to teach locally, and educate globally.
Advance your passion for a healthy society in a pioneering faculty with a growing international reputation for improving public health.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best more than a century ago: “The first wealth is health.” The Faculty was founded to address the health challenges that often stand in the way of economic and social development. Its overarching mission is to advance public health through learning, discovery and communication.
From global epidemics and catastrophes to local health care issues, Health Sciences focuses on many facets of human well-being. Health Sciences faculty and students pursuing both BSc and BA degrees collaborate with other disciplines, as well as with external partners. Working relationships have been forged with grassroots, university, NGO, or government-based local and national experts in places as diverse as Northern Manitoba, the Yukon, Uganda, Mongolia, Zambia, Mexico, China, India and Guatemala.
Undergraduate programs explore broad knowledge, including individual health, health policy, infectious disease, immunology, mental health and illness, environmental health and policy, global health, and ethical issues in health, medicine, and globalization.
Graduates pursue careers in fields that increasingly demand critical thinking, interdisciplinary skills and international perspectives. Most Canadian medical schools now expect applicants to demonstrate a broad understanding of world health concepts as well as strength in bio-sciences.
www.fhs.sfu.ca
Faculty of health SciencesAdvance your passion for a healthier society.
Join this new faculty, where solutions become clear. Its mission: to prepare for new and emerging environmental challenges, with teaching that integrates natural, social and policy sciences, as well as pure and applied research.
This is a rapidly growing academic field, as we face the increasing challenges of climate change, loss of biodiversity, depletion of resources and pollution. To address these issues effectively, the Faculty looks at them from all sides: you’ll study both the scientific foundation and the human dimension of our complex interactions with the natural world.
Your professors are specialists from such fields as urban, human and physical geography; policy development; cultural and economic geography; sustainable community development, geographic information science; and ecotoxicology. They will engage you in all kinds of projects and all kinds of learning: lectures,
team work, workshops, seminars, lab work, tutorials—and field work, too.
As a graduate, you will be prepared for a career in many areas: non-governmental organizations, government, environmental regulatory bodies, sustainability and conservation initiatives, economic analysis and modeling, data mapping and analysis, policy development and enforcement, conservation, assessment and rehabilitation, collaborative community development, and environmental consulting.
In the Faculty of Environment, you’ll gain an expert command of environmental issues and an understanding of the science-based and human-focused strategies necessary for moving toward sustainability in every part of life.
www.fenv.sfu.ca
Faculty of EnvironmentFind ways to live lightly on the planet.
Excellence flourishes in the Faculty of Science, known for its outstanding mix of teaching, research and attention to individual students.
Science professors from every department and in over 30 distinctive programs teach and do research alongside students, whether in the classrooms, in the labs or in the field. Independent study terms and research courses allow you to tackle important scientific issues under the guidance of world-class experts. You can pursue the answers to your questions in every area of scientific study, from big problems like global warming to very small ones like unlocking a strand of DNA to find a cure for diabetes — even out-of-this-world projects like simulating life on Mars.
There are virtually limitless possibilities for you to combine subjects within the Faculty or, like the joint degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and Business, to connect to broader areas involving other
faculties. Work Integrated Learning and Co-operative Education opportunities also let you work in a professional capacity even before you graduate. But it’s not all work and no play: science students display their search for knowledge and fun during “Geek Week” on campus each year.
Graduates of the Faculty of Science have the background knowledge and the hands-on experience necessary for careers with some of the nation’s leading businesses. Many grads also continue on to professional fields, like actuarial science or medicine.

It’s no surprise that Denmark’s Jacob Lennheden is aiming for a career in international development. After all, in high school he started a non-profit group that’s been supplying thousands of mosquito nets to people in Sierra Leone, to save lives by combating malaria. And he spent his gap year teaching in Central America. Now, through SFU, he’s heading off to the University of Ghana for a four-month International exchange. So what has Jacob learned so far about helping developing countries? “The biggest thing they need is trade. We need to buy their goods and services and respect them.”
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SFU?I want to understand why the world’s problems are there in the first place. If you want to solve them, you have to understand them. SFU’s International Studies was the ideal way for me to do that and experience a broad scope of studies. Specialization, yes, but in the context of a broad base, because the world is so interconnected. There is a need for people to know about, say, biology and politics. In Ghana, I’ll be immersing myself and really talking to people there.

Stephanie Wong is an outstanding 4th year business student who had her choice of universities. A super volunteer, she founded SFU’s Young Women in Business, a non-profit society for ambitious young women from a variety of disciplines and industries that, among other programs, pairs female students from any faculty with an SFU alumni mentor. “We are all in the business of building a career. So all women here are technically in business,” says Stephanie.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SFU?The entrance scholarship I was offered was a large factor! But other universities offered me scholarships too, so I took the time to look at them all. Really, it wasn’t even a comparison. I was blown away by the calibre of SFU’s faculty and students. It’s so easy to have a conversation with the professors here.
HOW HAS REALITY LIVED UP TO YOUR FIRST ExPECTATIONS?It exceeded them. I really like how well the students are supported here, encouraged to fulfill their potential. It is a very warm environment; quite a contrast with other universities. You feel the pride and passion when you are working on something you care about. I am a very proud SFU student.

James Liu had it all figured out in first year. Science would equip him to teach high school, a career plan he was really stoked about. But after two years of studying, a health science co-op work term, and volunteering with humanitarian organizations, his goal changed. James decided to combine his passion for education and science by pursuing a career in medicine, and made the switch to SFU’s Faculty of Health Sciences.
WHY DID YOU SWITCH TO HEALTH SCIENCES? I became really interested in humanitarian issues, and saw that health is where I can make the biggest difference. I have discovered that the most basic human need is health. When you don’t have access to resources, your health is very vulnerable.
HOW DID SFU SUPPORT YOUR NEW GOAL? SFU was very supportive. For medical school admissions, a large emphasis is now put on ethics, on problem solving, and having a global view. And to be an effective practitioner, you need to be a team player. All these areas are emphasized in SFU’s Health Sciences program. The interdisciplinary nature breeds very good communication skills. This increases the quality of the healthcare professional.

An international student from China via New Zealand, Jin has just graduated — and her career is already flourishing, thanks partly to an award-winning product she helped develop. A sustainable solar-powered home design called North House took 4th place (out of 20) in the US Energy Department’s Solar Decathlon. A Fine Arts devotee all her life, Jin says she chose her faculty to make the dimensional leap to designing innovative technology. And a Publishing minor will equip her to communicate smoothly across disciplines.
I have a broad interest. Here we not only study traditional areas like communication design, industrial design and photography, but we go beyond that and design new technology. In my research, SFU came out on top, and ranked really high in Canada for comprehensive universities. Right now I am a research assistant … with a long-term involvement in sustainability research.

Gianmarco, who is from Italy, chose SFU mostly because he liked the global way we think here. An International Baccalaureate graduate, he has found at SFU not only a stimulating environment in which to study engineering, but a warm community as well. Gianmarco sees a future of multiple career choices, including education and sanitation projects in rural communities of South and Central America.
My high school was international, so SFU seemed like the perfect continuation. ‘Thinking of the world’—I was inspired by that. SFU is highly ranked internationally, and one of the top places for semi-conductors, my field. And I wanted a whole life experience, not just the Big Result. SFU is very welcoming to international students. There is a lot of community here, and a lot of support. The professors are so easy to talk to, and they have this amazing world view. It’s all here.

At SFU, there is always the possibility that an elective will change the very course of your life. Julianne Kucheran, as a third-year Kinesiology student, became “enthralled” by Resource and Environmental Management 100, and overnight a new life fell in her lap. Now Julianne is working on a future she’s passionate about and, to that end, spent a mind-blowing term on Haida Gwaii studying economic and environmental solutions for the islands. And that kinesiology background? An SFU certificate in Health and Fitness Studies only enhances her plan to work in a holistic way.
Environment includes people, so knowing how human minds and bodies work, is a strength for me. It’s not just about scientific environmental studies but also bringing community, culture and politics into the solutions. And I wish everyone could travel — it’s a way to see that all communities need and want the same things, and how intrinsically connected humans and the environment really are.

Natasha Richardson has always loved learning. From a young age she’s wanted to be a teacher. Throughout university she taught dance and tutored math, but her goal was to teach secondary school.
Maybe it sounds like a straight line from kindergarten bliss to elite math/science teacher, but the middle part, the getting there, took Natasha well off the traditional path to teaching. “I explored other options,” she says. “I had some great experiences — and I love math, but not as much as teaching.” Starting in Arts, transferring to Science to get a BSc in Math, and working in research for several years, Natasha then felt ready to go into education knowing it was the best choice for her. “Teaching is my passion, my love. Now I know it was meant to be.” She graduated in August with a Bachelor of Education, and is already teaching at St Thomas More Collegiate.

Sienna, who has many life passions, wants a career focused on improving the human condition, starting with aboriginal youth. Her studies in Dialogue, along with her entire SFU experience, are positioning her to do that and much, much more.
The Dialogue experience was incredible. As a group we decided on our direction, then had to defend it to politicians and the entire community. It was real! We were marked on participation and quality of the presentation, like a mini-Master project. We definitely made an impact.

GLOBAL CIty. GLOBAL OUtLOOkCultural diversity, biodiversity, diverse programming and three campuses make SFU the choice for youAt SFU you will find more than 28,000 students, 1,000 teaching faculty and 100,000 alumni spanning the globe and they’re all thinking of the world. www.sfu.ca
Burnaby campusLocated in the thriving and culturally diverse city of Burnaby, only a 20-minute Skytrain ride from downtown Vancouver, our main campus has one of the most awe-inspiring settings in the world. The summit of Burnaby mountain offers a stunning panorama of mountains, ocean and
islands: and you can see the towers of both our downtown and Surrey campuses. In addition to a wealth of learning resources, Burnaby campus houses student residences, the main library and the new UniverCity community of residences and shops.
Surrey campusSurrey’s new city centre features a flagship library, community plaza, city hall, performing arts centre and new commercial and residential developments. Situated in the middle of this emerging metropolitan centre, our Surrey campus offers an intimate environment set in a
stunning architectural complex recently acclaimed as “the world’s best business centre.” Conveniently located adjacent to the Surrey Central SkyTrain station, the campus embodies innovative design and technology and, in 2011, will add an additional 5,000 square metres of teaching and specialized science and research labs.
Vancouver campusIn the heart of downtown Vancouver, Harbour Centre offers leading edge research programs and a wide range of courses. In addition, the campus features two unique heritage sites, the Wosk Centre for Dialogue and the Segal Graduate School of Business, as well as the newly renovated and
repurposed Woodward’s site which houses the School for Contemporary Arts. Lectures, programs and events for the public keep this campus a lively downtown destination.
