client responsiveness

Everything we do at SG&A provides measurable value to our clients – or we don’t do it. Whether it is a private college, law firm, or internet start-up, we always strive to understand the vision, mission, culture, and operation for each organization we work with.

It is this “intellectual capital” related to our understanding of our client’s goals for their entire organization, not just their goals for real estate and facilities performance, that provides great value. And how we use that information to turn the every day into extraordinary is what sets SG&A designs apart from the competition.

bim [building information modeling]

Seeing is Believing : BIM & 3D VisualizationSG&A is committed to improving design processes and client interactions through the use of building information modeling (BIM) technology. BIM is the creation and use of coordinated, consistent, computable information about a building project that yields reliable digital representations of the building in both two dimensional and three dimensional representations used for design decision-making, production of high-quality construction documents, clash detection, performance predictions, cost-estimating, construction planning, and facilities management. We are embracing this new technology and becoming a leader in our local design community with the implementation of Autodesk Revit, a BIM software program.

Vision. Mission. Culture. Operation. It is what makes every client unique. And, every SG&A building design uniquely responsive.

So much happens inside the contemporary office building during today’s fast-paced world of work. First impressions, receiving visitors, maintaining security, taking calls, expressing corporate brand, providing comfort, safety and even some light refreshment = and you haven’t gotten passed the lobby yet!

We have learned over the years that a poorly designed building might not hinder a truly innovative company with lots of big ideas - think computer giant and the home office in the garage - but a well-designed building can sure improve efficiency, productivity, and retention of your best employees.

And, we know that it can improve team work, communication and collaboration among the five generations working together under the same roof for the first time in modern history. And, we have proof that it can improve the bottom line by being more energy efficient.

The results are in ...don’t take it from us, ask our clients.

We strive for the best in design. We know our design is at its best when it helps you to do your best.

Reservoir Woods is the renovation of Polaroid’s 1968 manufacturing plant into a Premier Class “A” office building located at 920 Winter Street in the heart of Waltham’s Class “A” Office Building market. A clean, contemporary approach was incorporated into the exterior design which takes advantage of the generous floor to floor heights and tenant flexibility to provide for increased fenestration.

The program includes a 41,000 SF central lobby and amenity center which includes entries into the individual wings. Each wing of the project is designed to function as separate “stand alone buildings” while maintaining a connection to the main lobby and amenity center.

The Sun Financial site master plan and building design in Wellesley Hills is the result of a collaborative team effort involving the client, architect and community. Through intense regulatory and neighborhood focus group meetings, SG&A created a design that provides the necessary buffer separation between the commercial use and the long established residential area. The master plan involved the redesign of the entire campus including a housing component of nine new residences along the western edge of the site. Extensive berms, landscape features and a two acre conservation area provide an environmentally responsible solution to Sun Financial’s expansion program.

SG&A is uniquely qualified to deliver the experience, resources and services needed to provide solutions, to meet your challenges and exceed your expectations.

Although we have a particular affinity for working with companies and organizations that are “on the move” that is where the similarity between our clients end. Whether they are healthcare service providers, research organizations, manufacturers, software engineers, defense contractors or law firms and whether they are going commercial, going public or going international, our design teams create environments that work best for each unique company and respond accordingly to what they do and how they do it.

Our work is inspired and informed by the unique ambitions of each client and, because each client is different, our response is distinct each and every time. Our creativity is enhanced, never hampered, by the realities of aggressive schedules and tight budgets. Codes, statutes, financial goals and scheduling needs are at the core of all we plan, all we design.

The SG&A design team provided focus on both redefining Acme’s brand identity as well as incorporating that identity into the built environment. The environmental branding created by the team reflects and supports the company’s commitment to its staff and corporate customers. We identified the key messages to infuse into the workplace and communicated those through the use of finishes, materials, colors, environmental graphics, ancillary seating and special lighting. This new office facility provides an opportunity for visitors to experience Acme’s corporate vision and values as well as manufacturing and lab operations. At the same time, the environment reiterates to its employees that they are a part of a collaborative team within a “mature, but entrepreneurial” hi-tech company.

Creating a sense of place. you either have it or you don’t. There really is never anything in between.

Sometimes fitting in is exactly what you want. Other times making a bold and foward looking statement is the only right thing to do. Work, live, learn and have some fun - a great place, a great mixed-use development is all of these things to those that experience it. The best ones look, feel and operate like they always have been part of the landscape. Whether the landscape is urban, suburban or rural, a successful mixed use development should be something more than the simple sum of its parts. It must be integral to, if not the center of its surroundings.

The best mixed used developments are the result of careful, creative and collaborative planning. It takes a special kind of design firm to create a great place. At SG&A, we design great places where people live, work, play and learn - and then stay awhile.

At the center of every college experience and the mission of each educational institution is learning.

The path to learning is different for each shaped by history and tradition as well as by its own vision of the future. Preparing every student, generation after generation, for the new world each will encounter upon graduation is at the heart of what you do.

We understand the goals are many, the constituents are diverse, and the resources are strained. Our creativity is enhanced, never hampered, by the realities of aggressive schedules and tight budgets. Our design work is inspired and informed by the unique ambitions of each college we work with and, because each institution is different, our design response is distinct each and every time. Just as it is always on time and on budget each and every time.

let there be lightproject type: Residence Hallarea: 54,000 Square Feet

Julie Hall has tremendous sentimental value to many but its original layout was an old–fashioned double-loaded, corridor style residence hall. The project was a challenge in other respects: no documentation existed for the original building nor for the subsequent office renovations. The schedule required extreme coordination and fast tracking with the builder. An extraordinary concept was needed to create the kind of building that Emmanuel wanted within the footprint of the building. Our “big idea” was the conversion of a two floor computer room into a dramatic, center atrium with a glass roof that served as common space, lounge and community room. The basic structure was retained but the building itself was virtually gutted and built new from the inside out to accommodate suite style rooms as well as new building envelope, windows, roof, mechanical and electrical systems, and elevators.

The George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security at Northeastern University, as planned, is a world-class facility dedicated to the advancement of national security research. As an innovative, knowledge center, the building’s traditional vernacular and contemporary aesthetic expresses the progressive and collaborative nature of the institution, the scientists, the entrepreneurs, and the advanced research and discovery that will be accomplished there. The architectural expression is a manifestation of the vision to create a unique and special place to welcome knowledge workers. Located on a prominent site on the Burlington campus, a hierarchy of forms creates a visually coherent architectural statement appealing to both corporate and institutional users. The landmark building creates immediate visual impact and defines the Institute’s important presence at the entrance to the site.

Located directly on the upper campus quadrangle, Packard Hall serves as home to the development offices and is occupied by Tufts University’s Vice President. Renovated to better accommodate the building’s administrative functions, SG&A utilized period color schemes, detailing and light fixtures. The hall now boasts increased organizational abilities while offering visitors a sense of authenticity within this historic landmark.

Tufts University at Grafton, MA is a nationally recognized veterinary school. SG&A was commissioned to design a new 12,000 square foot Wildlife Center to accommodate the rehabilitation and study of wildlife throughout New England. With 120 acres of open land and future building concerns in mind, SG&A worked closely with Tufts to pick a site appropriate to the new facility as well as future construction. The Tufts Wildlife Clinic is a unique facility, providing veterinary care, classroom and laboratory teaching methodologies as well as an education center for children and adolescents. The central core encom-passes the reception, waiting areas and educational displays. Overlooking the natural wetlands is a 40 person lecture hall with access to an outdoor patio for animal observation. One of the most distinctive features of the wildlife center is housed in the clinic wing. Care is provided for the animals in their natural surroundings. Three separate wards extend care to aquatic, envi-ronmental and carnivore species. A fourth ward serves as a multi-purpose and surgical suite.

Brewster Academy commissioned SG&A to design the largest expansion in the school’s history. Taking advantage of the beautiful views on Lake Winnipesaukee, SG&A designed a 42,000 sf academic building with a program that includes a library, classrooms, chemistry laborato-ries, lecture space, and audiovisual studios for the 300-student campus. Separate classroom “villages” feature distinc-tive class configurations, student study areas, instructional support rooms, and teachers’ offices. These “villages” create environments that accommodate various teaching modalities, encourage team teaching and maximize opportunities for individualized, interdisciplinary instruc-tion throughout the space.

campus connectionsproject type: Renovation and Addition area: 30,000 Square Feet

The Flanagan Campus Center at Beatty Hall is a touchstone in so many ways for the Wentworth community. As one of the most public of buildings on campus, it is a facility that is integral to the daily lives of many WIT constituents – students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Creating an energetic vibe and a sense of place is an essential element to the project’s success as well as meeting the strict budget and schedule. The Flanagan Campus Center at Beatty Hall project includes the construction of approximately 7,000 gsf of new building space in order to expand and renovate the dining commons, kitchen and servery as well as renovate approximately 23,000 gsf of other existing space. The $10 million project includes the development of a new, two story addition to the Ward Street side of Beatty Hall, removal of pre-cast panels from the northerly façade of the building and installation of new fenestration to enhance building appearance. This allows for modest floor space expansion and development of a new main entrance to the building to provide a new interior lobby and enhanced access and egress to the first three floors of the facility. This project also includes an array of improvements aimed at enhancing pedestrian access to, and connections through, Wentworth’s campus.

adaptive reuseproject type: Renovation area: 40,000 Square Feet

Built in 1948, the same year that Stonehill opened, Merkert-Tracy Hall was the young College’s first major construction project. It opened in February 1949 as a science center and classroom building. An addition was constructed in 1979. In 2009, Stonehill built a new state-of-the-art science building on its lower campus and made plans to renovate the old facility into an administrative office building for two divisions, Advancement and Finance as well as the Human Resources Department.

Initially, SG&A provided a feasibility study which documented existing conditions, determined the best new use for the building, created a preliminary budget for the agreed upon use, and a subsequent schedule for design and construction. The findings of the study were presented to the Board of Trustees for funding approval. Working with the Facilities Department team as well as senior management, SG&A continued with programming, design and construction administration. The $6 million project was completed in October 2010 and staff moved into the facility on November 11, 2010.

His client-driven focus toward responsiveness, efficiency and quality control is critical to the firm’s continued reputation for excellent design work.

Jeff Tompkins iiDA LEED AP works with every client to create great spaces that respond to their unique goals and challenges. From concept to closeout, Jeff works to understand and clarify client expectations then works to assure our team tracks those expectations and delivers on shared goals. Jeff is particularly skillful at finding the “sweet spot” where design excellence, constructability, budget, and schedule meet. In partnership with Howard, Jeff provides leadership to the Interior Design Studio within the firm.

point of view: “The client’s culture is central to our design inspirations. It takes precedent over everything else that we draw upon as professionals and as individuals to inform the work. Maybe that’s why there is no definable SG&A “style” - because in the end, the space will always say more about you than it does about us. And, it will always evoke excellence.”

point of view: “Creativity, originality and innovation exist without promise unless they are tempered by reason and practiced with organization. We balance each SG&A project team’s skill set so that we are equally good at project management and design. You can trust us to cross the t’s and dot the i’s – which, we will confess, is done with a flourish at SG&A!” -matt
