Emanu-El Hanukkiah-Lighting
Reminders:
During the eight nights of Hanukkah (Sunday, December 2nd-Sunday, December 9th), the Hanukkiah is lit in homes after
sundown. On Friday, December 7th, we light Hanukkah candles immediately before lighting Shabbat candles.
On the nights of Hanukkah when we will have afternoon minyan (Monday, December 3rd-Thursday, December 6th),
we will light Hanukkah candles in the Steinberg Chapel immediately before the ma’ariv (evening) service.
We also are proud to once again display our Synagogue’s electric Hanukkiah during the holiday.
Have a wonderful, light-filled Hanukkah!

Bill Watterson’s comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes” centered around the relationship between a six-year-old boy, Calvin, and his stuffed-animal tiger, Hobbes. While Watterson’s humor is often childlike and playful, his words sometimes offered some profound ideas.
In one such cartoon, Calvin impatiently waits for his father to begin a family barbecue, but his father urges him to think of other things while he waits: “Here we are, it’s a beautiful evening. It’s nice to just sit here and look at the trees while we wait for the coals to get hot, don’t you think? Dinner will be over soon, and afterward we’ll be distracted with other things to do. But now we have a few minutes to ourselves to enjoy the evening. … It’s good that every now and then we have to wait for something.”
Unfortunately, Calvin’s response is to suggest instead that the family go to a fast-food restaurant. “Yeah, I know,” his father replies. “You think you’re going to be six all your life.”
Even though the holiday of Hanukkah does not typically involve barbecues and sitting outside, it does provide a precious opportunity to soak in some enjoyable moments.
In the minor Talmudic tractate of Sofrim, the rabbis tell us that the Hanukkiah – the apparatus that holds our Hanukkah candles – is one of our most poignant symbols of beauty. They mention a verse from the Song of Songs, one of the Hebrew Bible’s most beautiful poems, that says: “How fair you are, how beautiful!” (Song of Songs 7:7). According to these rabbis, the portion of the verse that says “How fair” should be attributed to the mezuzah, the scroll of parchment that we attach to our doorways. These mezuzot usually are stored in artistic and attractive cases.
Then, the rabbis tell us that the portion of the verse that says “how beautiful” refers to the Hanukkiah – not only because it is important for us to light the Hannukah candles, but also to place our Hanukkiah next to a window, so that those inside and outside of our homes can witness its beauty.
Many of us enjoy Hanukkah for various reasons, but perhaps the moment when we light the candles is the very best. Most Hanukkah candles burn completely after only a short time – in many cases, after only thirty minutes. That time span can allow us the chance to take a deep breath, to watch the colors of the wax as the candles burn, to watch children play dreidel or other games. It is a half-hour or so to watch and appreciate the beauty in our lives, the beauty that can take place by simply being together.
I pray that all of you will enjoy a Hanukkah in which beauty can enter your home.

I hope everyone had a meaningful Thanksgiving. Our sold-out celebration at synagogue got the holiday off to a wonderful start. Many thanks to Joan Halushka, Brenda Lederman, Karen Stark and Janet Freidman. As we recount the many things we are thankful for, security and safety at synagogue is regrettably something we can never take for granted. The Pittsburgh massacre was a painful reminder. You likely have noticed the installation of cameras and an increase in sight lines at our doors. Policies and procedures are under review. With thanks to Federation, we have received a Homeland Security grant that has been augmented by a generous donation from a congregant. We are far from finished but are well underway. We couldn’t have moved so quickly without board members investing their time. On behalf of the board, we are thankful for the many congregants who made their voices heard and responded to the High Holiday survey. You will help guide us as we plan High Holidays 5780. The following are some highlights of the survey responses: Approximately three-quarters of respondents said they enjoyed our services more
with a cantor. Regarding services meeting expectations, Kol Nidre and Neillah were particularly
impactful, with support for Yuriy Becker being unequivocal. Responses were generally positive or neutral about moving the president’s remarks to
Rosh Hashanah but comments indicated that the change was not well communicated. You provided strong kudos to Leah for the High Holiday booklet. Stay tuned for an outreach from the Rabbi on our educational offerings. When asked, the vast majority of congregants have said education was important. We have to ask ourselves why classes are not better attended. Please, let the Rabbi know your thoughts. We hope everyone has a joyous Hanukkah! The Emanu-El tradition of shopping
for the Kosher Food Pantry on “Night of Giving” is a perfect way to kick-off our
celebration.

HAPPY HANUKKAH!!!! The Officers and Board of Sisterhood Emanu-El wish you a wonderful Hanukkah 2018. Once again this year, the Friday Night Live Sisterhood Thanksgiving Dinner was a sellout and a complete success! Thank you to Karen Stark, Janet Friedman, Joan Halushka, Harvey Friedman and Brenda Lederman for making this event so special. This is a huge undertaking with much coordination required. On the 8th of this month, Sisterhood looks forward to honoring Charlot Karesh with the Synagogue. Charlot, along with her late husband, Stanley, was a founding member of the Synagogue and a very active Sisterhood member! Please join us at Shabbat services on the 8th to celebrate Charlot and thank her for all she has done for our Synagogue family! Sisterhood is planning to host the Southern Region Women’s League for Conservative Judaism conference on March 31-April 1, 2019. We expect women from Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. This is a wonderful opportunity to show off our Sisterhood and the amazing women who make it so successful! Watch for more information!! Volunteers wanted!! This year we are trying to have programs for everyone and in all areas of Charleston! While every program won’t be for everyone, we hope to have at least a couple of interest to each member. Some programs we are considering include self-defense, painting, making French macaroons, movie club, a single women’s event, and “your choice”. Please let Victoria Yaitsky or me know what programs you would be interested in having. Please be safe this holiday season and I’ll see you back in 2019!

We had a good turnout at our November Spirit Night at the Kickin’ Chicken. The Men’s Club has two important functions coming up in early December. We will have our Outreach Program at Bishop Gadsden on December 2nd and our annual Baked Potato Bar for Hanukkah Dinner on December 7th. Many hands make light work. We need you to ensure that these events are enjoyable.
We also will participate in the Synagogue’s Night of Giving on
December 2nd, supporting the Kosher Food Bank. There will be gatherings in West Ashley, Mt. Pleasant, and Summerville. This is a popular family event. Come and bring your children and grandchildren. It is never too early to participate in Tikkun Olam.
Sunday, December 9th, is the annual Chanukah in the Square. Come for a fun
and festive evening in Marion Square from 4 pm to 6 pm. Welcome to our newest member, Leonid Dolbir. December is an eventful month throughout our lovely city. Make time to have
fun with your Synagogue Emanu-El family and our community as a whole. Join us for one or all of these events. Your presence is an important part of the community’s effort of Tikkun Olam.

Join us for the 11th annual Chanukah in the Square extravaganza, sponsored by the Norman and Gerry Sue
Arnold Foundation and the City of Charleston.
Once again the Yaschik/Arnold Jewish Studies Program and Chabad of the Lowcountry, have
partnered with the City of Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs, and many other community organizations. Chanukah in the Square is the largest annual Jewish event in
the state of South Carolina, and is a wonderful, family friendly way to come together as a community.
Our local Holocaust survivors will continue the tradition of lighting the menorah candles. Please plan on being there with your neighbors, friends, and family. Bring an appetite and your dancing shoes. We will supply the hot
food, the live music, and the festive atmosphere! Once again, there will be no shortage of potato latkes.
We need volunteers to hand out popcorn!

Do you have doorposts that don’t have mezuzot? It’s considered a mitzvah to hang a
mezuzah (an ornament with a small scroll containing the words of the Shema) on most of our homes’ doorposts. Rabbi Rosenbaum would be pleased to come to your home to help you hang your mezuzot with proper
blessings. This occasion can be simple and private, or more elaborate if you choose.
Please be in touch with the Rabbi if you’re interested
