PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI...Once again the High Holidays have come and gone. Every year our services seem to be more meaningful and spiritual than the previous year. One of my favorite responsibilities as President of our Temple are the daily birthday and anniversary calls - the happy calls! With the holidays being in early September this year many of our

congregants were still in their homes around North America and had not returned to Florida for the season. Almost every one I spoke with who is still up north told me they streamed our services and couldn’t say enough positive things about the Temple. Many people did not go to their local synagogues and simply prayed with us from afar. They said that no service compares to the beauty of what we offer here at Temple Emanu-El. We have several congregants who fly in for these 10 days every year and then go back to their northern homes for another month or so before returning for the “season”.

We are so fortunate to have such committed and talented clergy leading our Shul. The Rabbi’s sermons and commentary were right on point as usual. The music was just beautiful and uplifting. Once again this year our talented teen-agers Mya Bodnick, Emily Kirschner and Kate Richman joined the Hazzan on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. They were just amazing! Looking around the sanctuary I saw many people with tears in their eyes as they performed. The prayers they sang were captivating and added so much spirituality to the services. Hazzan Feuer, along with Claudio, continues to elevate us all with their magnificent music.

The spectacular services that we all enjoyed are continued all year long on Friday evenings at 7 pm for an hour and Saturday morning from 9:15 to 11:45. Of course, we always have an Oneg (dessert) on Friday evenings and a beautiful Kiddush luncheon every Saturday!

Attending services at the Shul even occasionally throughout the year is so meaningful for all of us because it gives us a time away from the constant pressures and distractions of the outside world. I am so thankful for our Shul because it stands for everything that is good, true and sacred. It is impossible to attend one of our beautiful services in our magnificent sanctuary and not feel inspired.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah, I hope that all of us take the spiritual beauty that we experienced throughout the Holidays and share them with others through acts of love and kind gestures. Let us truly shine as a community this Holiday season as we celebrate the warmth of Thanksgiving and the enduring light and joy of Hanukkah - the festival of lights.

P.S. Once again the Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, Dr. Arnold Eisen, will be with us for an entire weekend December 7-9. He is a captivating speaker and will surely en"light"en us on the last days of Hanukkah when we also celebrate Gilda Block, Torah Fund honoree.

B’Shalom,Rob Gordon

I’m getting older.

I came to this remarkable realization the other morning after having only received four hours of sleep the night before. There was a time in my youth when I could manage such a feat and still be productive the next day. Not so much today. I was a zombie.

What surprised me is that I was surprised. The truth is, most of our adult lives are lived in the shadow of aging, but because this shadow tends to frighten us, we are inclined to pay it little heed.

But life reminds us of its inexorable march onwards and we get reminded periodically that we are all – in fact – getting old day-by-day.

Some of us manage this with grace and acceptance. Some of us fight against the grey tide with all the means at our disposal. However, there is only one real way to cope with the inevitable decline of our mortal selves, and that is by refusing to see aging as equivalent to dying.

In the Torah, Moses and his brother, Aaron, receive God's com-mand to appear before Pharaoh to demand the freedom of the Jews. In what looks like an unnecessary digression, the Torah mentions that "Moses was 80 years old and Aaron was 83, when they made their demand on Pharaoh." In the words of the Talmud, "Eighty is the age of strength."

The strength of 80 – or 50, 60 or 70 for that matter – is the wisdom that comes from experience and completion. As we age, we can review our life, make sense of it, and come to peace with it.

The Talmud relates that Rabbi Hanina used to say that one was regarded as healthy "as long as one is able to stand on one foot and put on and take off one's shoes." It was said that Rabbi Hanina was able to do so at the age of 80. He remarked that "the warm bath and oil with which my parents anointed me in my youth have stood me in good stead in my old age."

Commenting on this passage, a rabbi wrote that Judaism is the “warm bath” and Torah is the “oil” with which we anoint our children and ourselves. It is the “bath” we need to keep away the chill. It reminds us what really matters.

With these thoughts in mind, I want to invite you to a 6-session workshop at Temple Emanu-El called “Wise Aging”. Facilitated by Linda Abrahamson LCSW – along with some involvement from yours truly – we will explore what the Jewish Tradition has to say about the social, emotional, and spiritual challenges that arise as we age, as well as seeking strategies that can help us all experi-ence a deeper sense of well-being, regardless of where we are in the aging process. The program will be held on Sunday mornings, 10:30am-12:00pm beginning January 13, 2019 and is free for members and guests alike.

We hope you can join us!

B’Shalom, Rabbi Michael Resnick

HOW DID I BECOME SO JEWISH?Raised in an Orthodox family by parents and grandparents who fled pogroms resulted in my living in a strictly religious home and having a thorough Jewish education. At the same time it created difficulties for me as a child and teenager growing up with the strictness of Orthodox law

and friends whose families were not religious.

The other influence in my home was my mother's dedication to Israel and the Jewish Welfare Fund, the precursor to Federation. Another great Jewish influence in my life was my older sister who made aliyah to Israel at a young age. At the time I didn't know that I was being led to a personal and professional commitment to Jewish life.

As a young married woman, I made a conscious choice to affiliate with the Conservative movement. No more strict Orthodoxy for me! Becoming a Conservative Jew was my rebellion! Though I could read Hebrew fluently, I decided to learn to speak Hebrew and switched from Ashkenazic pronunciation to Sephardic. I taught Sunday school while my own children attended a new Solomon Schechter Day School. I became president of the fledgling school.

After serving on several boards in the Federation network I decided to go back to school to become a Federation professional. I graduated as an adult from Yeshiva University's Wurzweiler School of Social Work with an MSW and a discipline in community organization and landed a super job at the New York Federation. After a number of years there, I then worked at JESNA, the Jewish Education Service of North America, at the same time serving as President of Oheb Shalom Congregation in South Orange, NJ. As I look back now, I feel fortunate that I had that intensive "indoctrination" growing up.

When I moved to Florida a priority was to find a Conservative synagogue. After a while I found my second home here at Temple Emanu-El. I figured I had "paid my dues" after so many years in synagogue leadership but it didn't take long for me to become involved in Women's League. That's been such an important part of my membership and together with coming to Shabbat services every Saturday, Temple Emanu-El has truly become my second home.

The

Cantors

Azi Schwartz Yaakov “Yanky” Lemmer

Thursday, February 21, 2019 at 7pm

We are very excited about this year's concert. It will bring together three young cantors for an evening of sacred and secular music. The trio has performed together and separately at prestigious venues in the United States and abroad.

Brooklyn-born Yaacov (Yanky) Lemmer, Cantor of the Lincoln Square Synagogue in New York City, is the grandchild of Polish Jews and grew up listening to Jewish music which inspired him to become a cantor. He studied with several well-known cantors and later at the Betz School of Jewish Music at Yeshiva University. With a Masters degree from Touro College in special education he also works as a special education therapist.

Azi Schwartz, Senior Cantor at New York's Park Avenue Synagogue, was raised in a traditional community in Israel. His grandfather, also a cantor, inspired Azi to pursue his passion for singing and music. After graduating from Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute and studying under the top cantors in the world, he continued his studies and graduated from the Mannes School of Music with a Masters degree in Classical Singing and Conducting.

Born in London, Natanel Hershtik began singing as a child with his father Naftali at the Jerusalem Great Synagogue. He is Cantor at the Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach. After serving in the IDF as a combat paramedic, he studied law and received an MLL degree from the University of Miami. He also pursued musical studies at the Tel Aviv Cantorial Institute with other cantors and composers.

The Palm Beach community can expect a magnificent evening with the stars of the world's Jewish music scene. For a preview of what to expect, you'll find them on You Tube, "New York Cantors Live in Concert".

We welcome our new members, returning snowbirds and travelers as we kick off an exciting lineup of programming and activities. Now that our beautiful and inspirational High Holidays are over, we are ready to keep you busy. We encourage your involvement, ideas and help.

Please join us on Monday, November 12th at 1 PM for an insightful panel discussion -- “Memories of Growing Up Jewish Around the World”. We will take you on an amazing journey from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Germany, Morocco and Shanghai to the United States as four of our members share their memories and incredible journeys. Chairs Haviva Langenauer, Belle Winston and Hillary Wohl have planned a thought provoking afternoon.

We are thrilled to be honoring Gilda Block at an elegant Torah Fund luncheon on Sunday, December 9th at 11:30 as our “Woman of Achievement”. We thank Gilda for her commitment to the Jewish Theological Seminary, Temple Emanu-El and our Women’s League. The luncheon is the culmination of the Seminary Weekend at Temple Emanu-El.

The Women’s League Torah Fund campaign supports The Jewish Theological Seminary and Conservative/Masorti Judaism. This year’s Torah Fund theme is Atid, which means “future”. You may have noticed the beautiful pin many of our women are wearing as a sign of support for our future. Be sure to join us!

The Women’s League-sponsored Adult B’nei Mitzvah class, which starts on November 28th at 12:30 PM, was featured on the front page of the Jewish Journal in October. We have generated much enthusiasm for this two year program, which will culminate with a group B’nei Mitzvah and offers a remarkable journey into Jewish identity and tradition as viewed through the lens of Jewish ethics. Rabbi Resnick will be team teaching with Michael Ross. Call the Temple office to enroll. Ilene Goldstein and Hadar Mehl are chairing this endeavor.

Our Gift Shoppe has an exciting new line of fashion Israeli jewelry featuring a “nanochip” with the entire Tanach imbedded. These creative necklaces and bracelets make great gifts. (Hanukkah is coming!) We are also featuring a mega clearance sale to make room for new merchandise. Please be sure to check it out.

Did you know that Women’s League has a Tribute Fund? Consider making a donation as a way to recognize a special occasion or express sympathy to an individual in your life. Proceeds of the fund are used to supplement youth activities and support the work of Women’s League. To make a contribution, please call Ruth Stein at 561-585-2357 or email her at [email protected].

Women’s League plays an important role in supporting and strengthening our synagogue. A record number of women have already sent their dues to support our mission to make Judaism meaningful, dynamic and vital for every one of our members and her family. If you have any membership questions, please call Ellen Levy at 505-235-7417 or email her at [email protected]. We invite every woman to participate with us.

December 17, 2018RACHEL CALOF’S STORYAuthor: Rachel CalofReviewer: Emily Gardner

The author's memoir relates an unusual Jewish immigrant experience. Eighteen year old Rachel leads a terrible life in the Ukraine, becomes a “picture” bride and manages to build a life homesteading in

the Northwest Plains.

NEW IN THE KRAMER LIBRARYOur book titles will soon be available through a laptop in the library, thanks to Sylvia Lewis, a retired librarian and Temple member. Sylvia has been inputting each volume and is more than halfway through the collection. When complete, you will be able to see if the Kramer Library has the book you are seeking.

Temple member Alan Newman has published a very readable, multi-family saga, the novel, "Good Heart." It is on the New Books shelf.

Amazon offers this summary. "Good Heart interweaves the stories of a Jewish family and a Christian family over three generations. Bobby Langford and Danny Baranson lead classic American childhoods together in small-town Indiana in the 1960s and 70s. But any notion that these boys lives are run-of-the-mill is dispelled when we flash back to the family histories that led them there. As we follow Bobby and Danny's lives through adulthood, characters from vastly different backgrounds are pulled together by twists of destiny, drawing them all to one special place: the land of Israel.

Good Heart is embedded with gems of Israel's history and culture, giving nuanced insights through tangible human stories. From an Israeli army base to an Indiana evangelical church, from World War II Austria to the Sudanese desert, exotic locales pepper this adventure with the ultimate discovery that even those who seem worlds apart are all interconnected."

Gilda BlockTORAH FUND 5779 HONOREE

DECEMBER 9, 2018 AT 11:30 AM

Business executive, philanthropist, artist - what a biography! As a 20-year old novice in the retail business, Gilda started out working for Abraham and Strauss in her own Brooklyn back yard and progressed to become a Senior Vice President and the only female member of the Operating Committee. From there she moved on to the May Company, a national group of department stores, progressing to the high-level position of Senior Vice President of Sales Promotion and Product Development. Her creative talents took her around the globe seeking new products and ideas for merchandising. For forty years she led the way for women in a male dominated business.

During her 60+ years of marriage to Henry z"l, they traveled exten-sively and owned several homes including one in France. Art and religion became their philanthropic focus. They endowed the Block/Kolker Center for Spiritual Arts at the Jewish Theological Seminary with Rabbi Jan Urbach as its director. And, according to Gilda, dozens of rabbinical students have been recipients of their scholarships.

Art lessons at the 92nd Street Y helped her develop her unique, colorful abstract style. These paintings along with Henry's glass sculp-tures adorn her homes and those of many other family members and friends. Their mutual interest in art led to the sponsorship of memo-rable jazz concerts at the Y and the endowment of the Gilda and Henry Block School of the Arts, regarded as one of the country’s top community-based art centers.

Supporting Conservative synagogues has been another major area of interest of the Blocks. Living in Manhattan led to membership in the Sutton Place Synagogue. Summering in the Hamptons finds Gilda worshiping at the Conservative Synagogue of the Hamptons where Rabbi Jan Urbach presides. And, of course, Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach has been the Blocks' spiritual home for many years. Rabbi Resnick and the Temple Emanu-El family always look for Gilda in the third row on Shabbat during the season. Music is a key factor in her life; have you ever seen her face light up when Hazzan Feuer sings "L'dor v'dor"? It was an easy decision to endow the Gilda and Henry Block Cantorial Chair to perpetuate liturgical music and fabulous concerts far into the future. And when Women's League needs a helping hand, Gilda is always there.

We honor Gilda Block as Torah Fund's Woman of Achievement for her accomplishments and her generosity.

Temple Emanu-El’s Adult B'nai Mitzvah program is a remarkable journey into Jewish identity and tradition as viewed through the lens of Jewish Ethics. Consisting of 26 sessions spread over two years, participants will learn everything about Judaism – its holidays, history, rituals and customs – in a manner that is fully integrated into the ethics and values of the Jewish People. No prior knowledge of Hebrew is required. (We’ll teach you everything you need to know!)

This program is sponsored by Women’s League of Temple Emanu-El and is open to women and men, members and guests alike.

DIRECTOR OF YOUTH EDUCATION & PROGRAMMING

The year is off to a great start in the Rothman Religious School and Beach Youth Groups. We have already accomplished so much and are excited to continue the learning and fun.

The students in the Rothman Religious School have already been hard at work learning about everything that Judaism has to offer. Our main curriculum is centered on seven core values; Teshuvah, B’Tzelem Elohim, Gevurah, Achrayut, Hakarat Hatov, Koach Hadibur, and Shalom. Each month our students explore the connections that can be made to Torah, Holidays, and everyday Jewish life through each value. Throughout the months of September and October they studied Teshuvah, taking responsibility for one’s own actions, and B’Tzelem Elohim, honoring the

image of G-d in ourselves and others. Through these lessons they are becoming more knowledgeable Jewish youth which leads them to developing a positive Jewish identity.

Registration is currently open to all families with children in Kindergarten through 7th grade. If you or someone you know would like to receive more information about our school, please contact us or visit https://www.tepb.org/education/religious-school

Yala! is also off to an amazing start. Our post-B'nai Mitzvah teens are exploring the Jewish take on current events and “Hot Topics”. Yala! is open to all and registration is still open. If you know of anyone that would like to participate they are always welcome to join. See our calendar for exact dates.

Beach Youth also has an exciting schedule. Our year started at the Rapids where our teens had a blast riding the water slides and reconnecting with old friends. We then celebrated Sukkot with our annual Sushi in the Sukkah and Havdalah Dinner. Most recently our teens planned and implemented a fun and exciting Fear Factor program that pushed them to the limits of their comfort zone through various activities, games, and challenges. If you haven’t already registered for Beach Youth Groups, please do so. Membership information can be found at https://www.tepb.org/youth-families or contact us so we can send the information your way.

Please remember that our school and youth programs are open to all families in the community, so if you know of anyone bring them to an event! Again, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out by phone (561) 832-0804, or [email protected]

Rose FriedmanNovember 17, 2018Rose is in 7th grade at Bak Middle School of the Arts, where she majors in piano. She also attends Temple Emanu-El’s Yala program, and attended the Temple’s Rothman Religious School for many years. In addition to her love of piano, Rose likes to ride her bike, swim, and spend time

with her friends and cousins. She also enjoys cruising and traveling, and a highlight of her travels was a special family trip to Israel. Rose is excited to celebrate her bat mitzvah with family and friends from near and far.

Haylie Emme FineDecember 1, 2018Haylie Emme Fine is excited to be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on December 1, 2018 at Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach. Haylie is a seventh grade Honor roll student at The Benjamin School, where she

plays on the varsity volleyball team. She also enjoys playing on the school’s soccer team with her friends. Haylie is part of a travel volleyball team and when she is not having fun playing volleyball with her friends she loves to have fun hitting balls on the golf course with her father and grandfather. This last summer Haylie traveled to Israel with her family and had the opportunity to visit the Holocaust Museum. It was an incredibly moving experience, which she will never forget. It really contributed to her appreciation of Judaism and made her realize how important it is to be proud of her Jewish identity. Never forget who you are and where you came from, so that nothing like that can ever happen again.

Mentoring 4 KidsInspire Empower Enrich

The Judith & Jack Rosenberg Mentoring 4 Kids program at Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Service has helped dozens of families since its inception in 1998. M4K works to achieve a healthy future for children ages 6-14 who are being raised in single-parent homes. This free program pairs children with same gender adult volunteer mentors who provide unconditional friendship and support by participating in fun, community activites as they build a lifetime friendship.

To learn about becoming a volunter or to learn how an M4K mentor can help your child who has lost a significant role model, please contact the following:

CLERGY GRATUITIES

Members inquire from time to time what the proper protocol is for recognizing the Rabbi and Hazzan for officiating at life-cycle events. The answer is that the Rabbi and Hazzan are paid by the Temple to provide those services to our members. Therefore, separate compensation is neither charged nor expected for those services. However, if a person feels motivated to do more, we recommend that contributions be made to the Temple in honor of the Rabbi and/or Hazzan. Each of them also maintains a discretionary fund from which financial assistance is provided to those in our congregation and our larger community who are in need.

Memorial Plaques

Honor your departed loved ones with a plaque installed

in the lower lobby’s Ruth & H. Bert Mack Memorial Room.

Memorial Plaques: $500 eachPlease contact the Temple office for more

information, (561) 832-0804, or email [email protected].
