Yom Kippur Afternoon: Repentance and Forgiveness: Conversations with a Former Inmate and a RI Parole Board Member September 30 – 2:45 PM – Bohnen VestryAs many of you know, in past years we have devoted the time during our break on Yom Kippur afternoon to open-ended dis-cussion of questions you have posed to our clergy about Judaism. “Ask the Rabbis” has always been stimulating and enlightening. This year we have decided to do something very different: We’ve decided to explore, in a deeply personal way, what it means to wrestle with key Yom Kippur themes. We will to do that by featuring two people who have spent a great deal of time think-ing about what it means to make mistakes in life, learn from them, and seek redemption. Our guests are Temple member Frederic (Rick) Reamer, Professor of Social Work at RI College and former member of the RI Parole Board, and lifelong Rhode Islander Peter Slom, who has a timely and poignant story to share with us. There will be opportunities for you to share your thoughts and reflections during the discussion. Please come and participate in this very important conversation.

Parking Lot for Yom KippurThe Temple parking lot is reserved for members who wish to leave their cars overnight after Kol Nidrei and will be walking to and from synagogue the rest of the Holiday. Please use street parking if you will be using your car during the Holiday; you may be blocked in if you park in the lot.

Shabbat mornings

Early Service in the Fishbein ChapelThe 8 AM Shabbat service in the Fishbein Chapel is a favorite of those who are up early and like an abbreviated davening. This service is lay led. Participants enjoy a warm camaraderie that enhances the spirited singing in the worship experience.

Sanctuary Service in the Main SanctuaryEach week, services are held at 9:30 AM in the Main Sanctuary for the entire Emanu-El community. This service is where members celebrate a host of life cycle celebrations, including baby-namings, Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations, Aufrufs in anticipation of forthcoming weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and trips to Israel. All these celebrations are conducted within the embrace and support of the congregation that gathers faithfully to daven, learn and socialize together. All are welcome. “Regulars” are ready to help newcomers to find their way and become comfortable in the service.

Minyan HadashMinyan Hadash meets the 2nd and 4th Shabbat of each month at 9:45 AM in the Fishbein Chapel. The style of the minyan is lay-led, warm and informal. It is a traditional, egalitarian, and spirited service that includes a full Torah reading, a brief D’var Torah, and all of the other parts of the service. People of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Soulful ShabbatShabbat each week reminds us that meaning in our lives lies not in what we accomplish but in being part of the universe. Soulful Shabbat meets the 3rd Shabbat of each month at 10:00 AM for a Shabbat morning worship experience that creates a space for pause and reflection by simplifying and slowing down the tradi-tional Shabbat service. Soulful Shabbat, led by Rabbi Alan Flam, emphasizes silence, quiet melody, meditation, and movement, along with traditional davening and Torah study.

Many members of Temple Emanu-el have worked hard for four years, lobbying the RI General Assembly to pass legislation keep-ing guns out of the hands of people convicted of domestic violence. On September 19th, in a special legislative session, the General Assembly passed the bill! Mazal tov, yasher koach and kudos to everyone in our community who helped make this happen.

Working together we helped create positive change to advance public health. Emanuelites met with their legislators, attended legislative hearings, wrote letters, editorials, emails, made phone calls, attended demonstrations and press conferences.

Our Social Action Committee is continuing its work with the RI Coalition Against Gun Violence, promoting (a) a bill that allows only law enforcement personnel to carry guns in k-12 schools, (b) a bill that limits high capacity ammunition magazines (RI law currently limits ammunition magazines for duck hunting, but not for weapons used to shoot humans).

For more information about how to participate in these and other social action projects, contact Joanna Brown or Rabbi Franklin. What better time than a new year to get involved in promoting social justice!

Hi! My name is Katrina Waldmanwerth, and lately I’ve beenthinking a lot about the importance of caring for everyone, even the little guys. Animals are really important to me, and I decided that I would contribute to helping them and organizations that help them. I started volunteering my time at PARL, (ProvidenceAnimal Rescue League of Rhode Island), a few weeks ago. Though I’m still too young to clean cages and feed the animals, I am volunteering my time with animal enrichment. (Basically, I get to cuddle bunnies and kittens all day!)

For my Bat Mitzvah project, I am asking for donations to help PARL help even more animals in need. Please take a look at the Everyday Wish List below and see how you can contribute to PARL. Maybe YOU can also visit PARL and cuddle bunnies and kittens! (Fun Fact: PARL had over 60 animals adopted in August!)

There is a box for donations at the Temple Office. Thank you!
