The Forgotten Gift by rabbi kirshner
Passover is most people’s favorite holiday. Just ask them. Many will tell you it is because of the culinary experience, enjoying leaven-free food for 8 days. Others will tell you it is because we become historical in the re-telling of the Exodus from Egypt. Most, I imagine would say they love the time with family and friends, gathered around the table and breaking matzah together at the festive Seder.

Interestingly, I doubt that more than 5% of the people I were to ask about Passover would tell me they enjoy the holiday because of the freedom it affords us. But, isn’t that the essence of the holiday? At its core, isn’t that what it is all about? It is ironic how the core principle of the Seder and the holiday that ensues is almost forgotten and under appreciated during this season.
Freedom is a strange thing to appreciate for an entire generation of people that never knew anything but its rewards and beauty. My children will live in a world that will witness little division between black and white people. The idea of a black president will not be a dream but a proven history. Jews are afforded rites and properties in a way that our history never allowed before. The State of Israel is flowing with milk and honey; technological advances and accessibility that the likes of David ben Gurion and Theodore Herzl could only dream about. Our kids sleep under a blanket of protection and comfort with countless possi-bilities at their fingertips. How could they properly appreciate the gifts of freedom they are surrounded by daily? I wonder how any of us can appreciate something that we have always had and was never taken from us?
Maimonides, the 12th Century rabbi, physician and philosopher teaches that the things that matter more than anything else to us are the things we never pause to appreciate. He begins to enumerate such things; our breathing, our heartbeat, the sun rising from the sky, oxygen in the air. Our vision, hearing and other senses. How true he was. I have found that most people appreciate the beating of their heart most, after that beating stops. The person who appreciates breathing the most is the person that just choked.
Similarly, Israel is facing a new phenomenon; a generation of people born into the country that only knew of its existence. The formation of the state, the wars for its independence and the sacrifices made are not fresh like they were for the Rabins and the Peres’ and Meirs’ of this world. How do we train people to defend and love a land like we did when it was just born?
This question is much bigger than Passover, but the holiday embodies the dilemma perfectly. We are celebrating our freedom when we have never experienced slavery; choices when we have never been denied free will. Perhaps the most potent verse of the Haggadah is when we are told, we must see ourselves as if we personally came out of Egypt. What this line is teaching us hundreds of years after the author put it in the text is that while certain amenities and choices might be afforded us today, we can never forget where we came from or those that made sacrifices on our behalf. If we do, then we have lost the essence of what the holiday of Passover, and freedom in general is about in the first place. Our generation might have it easy in some respects. But, our challenge is to create a generation of apprecia-tion and understanding of the freedoms we are afforded so we can indeed, maximize this holiday as Zman Chayrutainu - a time of OUR freedom.
Happy Passover.

This past Saturday evening, we celebrated our Temple’s 85th Annual Gala Dinner Dance, honoring Mark and Debra Hirschberg with the Founders’ Award, Michael Kollender with the Community leadership Award and Donna Weintraub with the Young Leadership Award. This was certainly one of the high points of my Presidency as we came togeth-er to celebrate the achievements and dedication of each of these people, raise essential funds for the congregation and have fun.
It would be impossible to truly communicate my respect and admiration for all that the honorees have collectively done for our community in just a few short words. In fact, I hope that the elegance and spirit of the evening conveyed just how much you all mean to me and our Temple community. In agreeing to be honored you again stood before us as role models of what it means to be leaders of a community and how to do it with love, humility and little regard for what you receive in return. You have also helped us raise essential funds for our operating budget through your personal contributions to this event and the “elbow grease” you put in to working with the Journal committee to encourage congregants, friends and others to support the Temple.
I am humbled and most grateful for all of the energy and enormous commitment of time that you have dedicated to our shule. And, I want to acknowledge your families for enabling you, and in fact encouraging you, to give your all to Temple Emanu-El.
Lisa Beth, Benjamin, Jordan and I send our love and best wishes that you and our entire community continue to go from strength to strength.
Sincerely,
Gregory Meisel

Our Children, Our Future
A great deal of my time is spent working with our Bnai Mitzvah students as we help prepare them for this special milestone in their lives. We know what an exciting time this is for the children and their families and we too shep much “nachas” from seeing each child shine when they have their day on the Bimah. While the children make it look so easy, there are many people at the Temple that have put a great deal of thought and planning into the process and program that is in place today. We realize that for our young Jewish men and women to stand on the Bimah and read from the Torah and chant their individual Haftorah entails much more than just learning the Trop. Many of our Bnai Mitzvah students share their day with one of their peers, and this helps them learn how to work with others and show respect to their part-ner. We also realize the importance of having our children learn the components of the service that are not specific to the Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Kabbalat Shabbat and Shacharit (morning) services are taught in the early years of Hebrew School, and have prepared the students to be able to lead Friday night and Shabbat morning services prior to starting their Bnai Mitzvah preparations. We want them to be proud of their heritage and to feel connected to their fellow Jews around the world. We hope this experience and knowledge helps them feel at home in any synagogue as they embark on their lives as young Jewish adults. On a programming note, I am very excited to announce that for our next Spirit & Song service on April 5th, we are welcoming back Dan Nadler and his guitar. This promises to be a very special treat for all of us. Please join me in welcoming him to our Temple and welcoming the Shabbat into our heart and souls, as we raise our voices in song. Soon we will celebrate the holidays of Passover and Israel Independence Day. These holi-days both symbolize the great miracles that God granted us, saving us from slavery and death. I hope you will join us as we celebrate our rich history, redemption, freedom and commitment to our Jewish people, past, present and future Yours always, Cantor Israel Singer

On Saturday evening March 2nd Temple Emanu-El hosted its 85th Annual Dinner Dance where we honored Mark and Debra Hirsch-berg with the Founders’ Award, Michael Kollender with the Com-munity Leadership Award and Donna Weintraub with the Young Leadership Award.
I was delighted that we had the opportunity to recognize these very special people for all that they have done and continue to do to make our shule a second home for our congregation. It was also a wonderful way to celebrate the Temple’s 85th anniversary. In case you did not know the Dinner Dance is our single largest event fundraiser and provides essential dollars for our operating budget (think books for our reli-gious school, tutors for our b’nai mitzvah and upkeep of our beautiful building). And as we relish the special moments from the Dinner Dance we are also moving ahead to raise the remaining dollars needed to reach our Dor Chadash – Campaign for the Next Generation (CNG) goal. As I write this we have raised 88% of the total goal. Our beautiful and very active Promenade level was made possible by the generosity of those that have made a financial commitment to CNG. There are still much needed renovations for our administrative wing to provide increased security and serve you better. To our congregants that have made a gift I thank you and to those that have not I invite you to contribute by being a part of our Promenade level Dedication Wall. For more information you can contact Bob Cook, Steve Rog-ers, Arthur Sinensky and Howard Breindel, our CNG Co-Chairs. Finally, I invite you to make note of the many activities taking place during March and April including Sisterhood Shabbat on March 16, our Second Night Seder on March 26th and Men’s Club Shabbat on April 30th as well as many other oppor-tunities to socialize, learn and be together. I hope you take advantage of all that Temple Emanu-El has to offer!! Chag Sameach,

The Klatskin Matching Fund for the Next GenerationCharles & Lynne Klatskin, long-time Shul members and 2009 recipients of Temple Emanu-El’s Founders’ Award, have graciously agreed to establish a matching fund of up to $500,000 that will donate an additional 50¢ for each $1.00 contributed to Dor Chadash – The Campaign for the Next Generation (“CNG”). For example, if a commitment of $10,000 is made to CNG, the Klatskin Matching Fund will provide a grant of $5,000, turning a $10,000 donation into a $15,000 contribution.
With additional congregant commitments to CNG of $1 million – and the $500,000 Klatskin Matching Fund grant – the Campaign will successfully conclude.
As they have for decades, Charles & Lynne are leading by example. They want to encourage others, especially those that have not yet contributed to the building of our magnificent Shul, to join them in ensuring the continued vibrancy of our congregation and our people. The goal of CNG is to raise the funds necessary to create a synagogue that truly meets the needs of today’s congregation – and the congregation of tomorrow.
Donations to CNG are payable in three installments. We request an initial payment of one-third of your commitment within 30 days, with an additional one-third payable on each of the first and second anniversaries of the initial payment. Generosity is recognized through plaques and similar dedications throughout the Shul. Your dedication will be based on your actual contribution amount (excluding the match from the Klatskin Matching Fund).

A Team Approach
Shalom Temple Families,
I hope you are all well! We are having a great year at Kesem. One of the most amazing parts of our program is our teams of teachers. Every grade is led by a “Rosh” – head teacher. Our “Rashim” (head teachers) men-tor, support and guide the other professionals in their grade. This system supports our children’s education in ways that continue to surprise and delight me. During our weekly staff meetings, our teaching teams share their successes and support each other through challenges. Recently, our Bet team reported on a family day where parents joined students in moving from station to station for a mezuzah making project. Three other grades decided to plan a similar event for their parents!
One of the biggest challenges of teaching is isolation. When a single teacher is facing a class of 15 students it can feel overwhelming. When a team is there, there is always a second set of eyes and hands, as well as a wise word, smile of support and quick advice! As Director of Education, I get to team not only with our entire staff, but with my invaluable assistant principal Naama Heymann, Board chair Andi Wolfer and amazing secretary Leah Mendyk. When we work together, we are so much greater than working in silos! You are on our team as well! As always, we love to hear from you – stop by anytime, speak to your child’s teacher after class. We value you and love seeing you at Kesem. B’Shalom

the seder platepreparing the seder plate requires attention. the special foods we eat on passover are also food for thought. every item on the seder plate abounds in meaning and allusion. the seder plate has six items on it, arranged in a special order. the plate is placed on top of the covering of the three matzot and is placed in front of the head of the household. the foods of the seder plate are listed below, with the reason each is included, the method of preparing it, and its role in the seder meal.
The shankbone a piece of roasted meat represents the lamb that was the special sacrifice on the eve of the exo-dus from egypt, and annually, on the afternoon before passover, in the holy temple.
The egg a hard-boiled egg represents the holiday offering brought in the days of the holy temple. the meat of this animal constituted the main part of the passover meal. a popular way of eating these eggs is to chop and mix them with the salt water which was set on the table. the eggs prepared this way are then served as an appetizer before the fish.
The bitter herbs bitter herbs (maror) remind us of the bitterness of the slavery of our forefathers in egypt. fresh grated horseradish, romaine lettuce, and endive are the most com-mon choices.
charoset a mixture of apples, nuts and wine which resembles the mortar and brick made by the Jews when they toiled for pharaoh. preparation: shell walnuts and peel apples and chop finely. mix together and add a small amount of wine.
The Vegetable a non-bitter root veg-etable alludes to the back-breaking work of the Jews as slaves. the he-brew letters of karpas can be arranged to spell “perach samech”. perach means backbreaking work and sa-mech is numerically equivalent to 60, referring to the 60 myriads (10,000), equaling 600,000, which was the number of Jewish males over 20 years of age who were enslaved in egypt.
The Lettuce the lettuce symbolizes the bitter enslavement of our fathers in egypt. the leaves of Romaine let-tuce are not bitter, but the stem, when left to grow in the ground, turns hard and bitter.

a musical mitzvahhospital beds and wheelchairs crowded into the social hall. Residents of the Rockleigh Jewish home waited to hear the singers from hooshir, indiana university’s premiere Jewish Co-ed a Capella choir. accompanied by aides, relatives and visitors from temple emanu-el in Closter, the residents were alert as the young men and women of the choir began to sing their repertoire of Jewish, hebrew and pop music. the energy and talent of the young choir was infectious. the singers entertained for one hour and the room remained silent and attentive. in most cases, silence would be viewed as a negative, but, in this case, the silence was the highest compliment! a daughter of a long time resident explained, many residents have some form of dementia. one consequence of dementia is a short attention span accompanied by verbal outbursts. the choir connected to the audience and brought a special musical gift to this wonderful community. starting with a chance meeting on a beach in mexico in december, the men’s Club was able to bring this wonderful choir to the Rockleigh Jewish home. the lessons learned by the young singers and the joy they brought to the residents will long be remembered. bruce pomerantz for the men’s Club

make a difference the sisterhood of temple emanu-elWhen we chose our theme this year for mishloach manot, make a difference, we hoped it would resonate with our community as much as it did with sisterhood. We want everyone in our synagogue to know why this mitzvah and endeavor are so important and the foundation which permits and supports all sisterhood’s projects and programs.
this year, with the suggestion and guidance from Rabbi Kirshner, we added a hang-tag to every bag which encapsu-lated the mitzvah of mischloach manot and easily identified the bag as coming from the sisterhood of temple emanu-el.
our mishloach manot is our single major fundraiser and from the profits, sisterhood provides services to our entire temple community. We send shiva meals to emanu-el families, give sedurim for b’nai mitzvoth, provide scholarships to schechter students to participate in their class trip to israel as part of our community outreach mission, offer emer-gency relief to the temple in times of need, help stock the shelves of local community food banks, send Chanukah packages to our college students, provide bimah flowers for unsponsored shabbat services, as well as a host of other services. We also give hamantaschen to all the students in the religious school, as well as hamantaschen for the megil-lah reading. the sisterhood also continues to support the israeli economy by purchasing food from israel.
each and every year, the family of david taubenfeld contributes the fruit in each and every bag. david’s spirit rejoices as he celebrates purim with his temple emanu-el family, for he is content to know all the good that comes from this project.
our sisterhood purim project continues to grow in ruach and commitment. in spite of the challenging weather condi-tions this year, our volunteers came with smiles and good will to help pack and deliver over 750 bags to the homes of our members. each one of our volunteers, participants, and supporters helped make this project a successful reality.
our purim committee is comprised of extraordinarily capable, efficient, and selfless women: Ruth pomerantz, Ruth Yung, lauri bader, toby glazer, Karen farber, and ellen grosovsky. We are grateful for our newest committee mem-ber, gloria nelson, who stepped up to the plate for every job. our purim committee performed so many tasks that the overlap blurred, which only served to confirm that we all handled a plethora of tasks. each and every one of you
March/april 2013 33
helped turn a challenge into a reality. We also thank annette stern for continuing to manage the finances. We are grateful to ilene anesini, audrey greenberg, Jeanine Corrubia, Chareen Kramer, phyllis Cunningham, and aaron billig.. each one of you provided invaluable advice, details, and insight.
sisterhood raises the bar for volunteerism, mitzvot, and community outreach. on behalf of the sisterhood, i extend my heartfelt thanks to the temple emanu-el family for allowing us to support you, your children, your grandchildren, and our temple.

the orient express
sisterhood’s 2nd annual progressive dinner was held on sat. January 26th. this year, the party goers” hopped” aboard the orient express, which took everyone to three homes all located on laurence Court. Well, the train was a figment of our imagination since we didn’t have far to travel, so the mode of transportation from house to house this year was by foot. first stop was at the home of stefanie and steve Rosner. the next host house was at elissa and Ken miller and dessert was at shari and andrew moss’s house. asian fare, catered by northern Val-ley affairs, was paired with asian themed beverages, such as sake martinis. it was a fun night and seems to be a tradition in the making!
