Temple Topics Vol. LXXXVIII No 11 • JUNE 2017 Sivan/Tamuz 5777 From The Pulpit Congratulations Rabbi Nichols, on your Ten Year Anniversary at Temple Israel of New Rochelle Back in 2007! 2017! Dear chevrei (friends), It is hard for me to believe that the first part of my sabbatical ended a month ago and that the second part of my sabbatical is only a month away (I will be gone for July and August). So many of you wrote, called and stopped by the office to hear about my sabbatical, that I thought I would share with the community the wonderful time spent away. A sabbatical, as described in the Torah, in Leviticus, was initially intended to allow the land to rest, as well as those who till it, one year out of seven. The idea extends further, with the intent that both the land and the farmer will be more productive after the rest of the year off. While I was not gone for a year (it will be three months in total), I was able to rest, and I have certainly felt refreshed and reenergized by the time away. I am sure part two will be no different in that regard. In my first time away, there were three wonderful things that happened as a part of my sabbatical, whose sum total led me to this feeling of renewal! First and foremost, I got to spend time with my family in a way that I am not usually able to do so. I got to do the most mundane of fatherly and husbandly tasks – have dinner with my family almost every night, shlepp my kids to sports practices and games, help with homework, make lunches, do errands, make home repairs and just, well, be around. A rabbi’s day-to-day schedule doesn’t allow for those things very often and I truly enjoyed doing them. The second thing I had time to do was to spend time with colleagues both formally and informally. In my travels (which I will describe in a moment), I visited several different congregations for services; it is always good to see what other communities are doing to build a stronger worship experience and be able to bring those ideas back here – ordinarily, there isn’t much opportunity to do that with my responsibilities on our pulpit. I also had countless lunches with colleagues from here to Israel and back. Hearing their challenges and successes was excellent grist for the Temple Israel mill. Lastly, and the part that most people wouldn’t find “restful” was my completing 5 marathons in 37 days! Many of you know that just a few years ago, it looked like I would no longer be able to run at all, let alone aempt and succeed at such a thing. But, changing how I run, particularly by training less, less intensively and less often, it showed that I could still get out there – as long as I kept my goals within reach of the new running me: older, slower and hobbled. The races were in places I had always wanted to run and each was a different experience. I met all the goals I had set for myself, and that might have been the most renewing part of it! I packed a lot into that 6 weeks, but it was amazing. In this next stage, I have totally different plans. For most of July, I will be volunteering at the URJ Kuꜩ Camp, as I do most summers, but with the time away, I will be able to be there far longer. That means, I will be able to have deeper relationships with my colleagues who will be there, the staff that I mentor and, most importantly, with the teen participants in the program. The second stage of the summer will bring our whole family to Israel for the longest stretch since Limor and I lived in Israel full-time. We look forward to exploring the country from top to boom with our children, visiting with friends and family there and deepening our Zionism in new ways! Limor and I are also celebrating our 20th anniversary, back where it all began, in Israel, so we’ll be taking a vacation while there to mark the occasion. If being away one month left me feeling renewed and refreshed, I cannot wait to bound back into the office after Labor Day ready to tackle the year ahead. I’d like to thank my colleagues and the entire Temple team for picking up the slack while I am away (and for tolerating all of my excited suggestions and new ideas) and to the Temple leadership for seeing the value in clergy sabbaticals. Have a great summer and I will see you in the fall! Senior Rabbi Sco B. Weiner

Back in 2007! 2017!

Dear chevrei (friends),

It is hard for me to believe that the first part of my sabbatical ended a month ago and that the second part of my sabbatical is only a month away (I will be gone for July and August). So many of you wrote, called and stopped by the office to hear about my sabbatical, that I thought I would share with the community the wonderful time spent

away.

Many of you know that just a few years ago, it looked like I would no longer be able to run at all, let alone attempt and succeed at such a thing. But, changing how I run, particularly by training less, less intensively and less often, it showed that I could still get out there – as long as I kept my goals within reach of the new running me: older, slower and hobbled. As Temple Israel’s one hundred and ninth business year comes to a close, we will gather on June 7th at 7:45 pm as a congregation to reflect on the successes of the year and plan for the next. The Annual Congregational Meeting gives us an opportunity to attend to the business of the congregation. The 2017-18 operating budget will be presented for approval, new board members will be elected, as will members of the nominating committee.

As we elect new board members, we will thank the outgoing board members, most of whom become honorary trustees. Honorary trustees are those who have served three full terms. The class of 2008 has served the congregation for nine years. They have distinguished themselves by their devotion to the congregation and their impact on programming and development. The hours committed are rivaled by their commitment to excellence in living the values we espouse. I thank them each for the impact they have made on the lives of our congregants. The vitality of congregational life is in no small part due their contributions.

Deborah Blatt – Deb revitalized the Social Action Committee ten years ago. During those years she has ensured that TINR’s rich history of commitment to Tikkum Olam is incorporated in our programming throughout the year. Temple Israel continues to be recognized as a congregation with social justice at its core due to Deb’s devoted leadership.

Brian Heaps – Brian has a long history of leadership in Temple Israel’s activities. His service on the board included his tenure as the president of the Brotherhood which he served with honor. Brian continues as the co-chair of the worship committee, a position that has cultivated a vision of participatory and spiritually moving worship opportunities.

Beverly Hoffmann –Beverly’s business and management background matched by her enthusiasm for the Kehillah School, its students, families and staff, has made her service on the board one which has

made a remarkably strong impact on the school’s success. As chair for many years, she now serves as co-chair, sharing her institutional knowledge and commitment to Kehillah as central to the Temple’s mission with a growing and involved committee.

Lloyd Robinson – Having grown up at Temple Israel, Lloyd knows the importance of the role of this congregation in the community. Through his leadership as Financial VP and President of the Temple, he created programs to ensure our healthy future. His commitment to the Reform Jewish community from his days as TIFTY president is also apparent in the improvements to the physical environment of the building, starting with his chairmanship of the House & Grounds committee into the capital campaign Temple Israel 2100. Lloyd’s inspiration is credited with the Kehillah classroom expansion, and refurbishing of the Lapidus and Goldstein Cultural Center spaces.

Richard Stoerger – Having worked in the Reform Youth Movement, Richard has insight into the lifelong impact the youth movement can make on our kids. Richard’s enthusiasm for our tremendous programming is evident in his advocacy and partnership as Youth Committee co-chair for so many years.

Mark Kleinman – Mark & Lisa have recently moved to Long Island. Mark has served on the board since 2012, and is stepping off due to their move. Mark has shared his love of Judaism and Israel through his service to our community. As a Vice President, he has brought his business expertise to board discussions. He fostered an excellent relationship with our tenants, the WTA, which has developed into a multi-year successful opportunity for their school to flourish. As a musician with strong spiritual ties to TINR, he has led the Bernie Wasko Memorial Shofar Choir for many years, and has graced us with his own musical talents in worship and at celebrations.

My deepest gratitude to Deb, Brian, Beverly, Lloyd, Richard and Mark. I hope your years of board service have been gratifying and you can now enjoy the fruits of your labor at Temple Israel for many years to come.

From the President

On Sunday, May 21 we concluded another wonderful year in Chavaya as we celebrated our accomplishments, and celebrated the faculty and teens who make it such a special place.

Rabbi Joshua Abraham Heschel says, “What we need more than anything else is not textbooks but text people. It is the personality of the teacher that is the text that the pupils read; the text that they will never forget.”

By now you should have received a letter in the mail explaining the 2017-2018 registration. We will be sending online registration in the first week in June. Please watch your in-box. Have a great summer!

This time of year is always a tear-jerker for us. Just seeing a Graduation Cap makes us emotional. Here, at Kehillah, we call our “graduation” ceremony a Seeyoom. A Seeyoom is a celebration of learning. We have 29 students that will be leaving Kehillah and moving on to Kindergarten. Many of them have spent their first part of childhood here at Temple Israel. So many important developmental

milestones have happened here and now we are celebrating them. It is time to celebrate the learning and teaching that goes into the Early Childhood Years. We will miss seeing them every day, however many of them will be in Chavaya and we know they will all come to visit us We want to take this time to congratulate them with a big Mazel Tov. We also want to make mention of our fabulous teachers here at Kehillah. The teachers spend so much time with our students fostering development. They create and maintain strong bonds. Thank you to all the Kehillah teachers! We wish everyone graduating all the best!

My name is Jessica Schlamkowitz and I will celebrate becoming a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, June 17, 2017. I will be chanting from Shelakh L'kha in the Book of Numbers. I belong to Temple Israel with my parents, Amy & Mathew Schlamkowitz, and my brother Jack. I am in 7th grade at Albert Leonard Middle School. Outside of school, I ski, play soccer, lacrosse and play the drums. For my Mitzvah Project, I volunteered at

the Costa Rica Animal Rescue Center. It is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of Costa Rican wildlife. This project is important to me because I love animals and the environment, and I want to help bring injured or sick animals back to health. This will help them thrive in their natural habitat. I hope to see you at services when I am called to the Torah.

My name is Jessica Shapiro and I will celebrate becoming a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, June 10, 2017. I will be chanting from Shelakh L'kha in the Book of Numbers. I belong to Temple Israel with my mom, Wendy Shapiro. I am in 7th grade at Albert Leonard Middle School. Outside of school, I play tennis, take singing lessons and I play the piano. For my Mitzvah Project, I organized a walk in honor of my great-uncle

Bobby. He died in 2015 from Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). Not a lot of people know about PPA and there isn't a cure so I decided to raise money for the National Aphasia Association and the research of PPA. This project is important to me because there isn't a cure for Primary Progressive Aphasia and I hope that with the money that I raised a cure will be found soon. I hope to see you at services when I am called to the Torah.

Board of TrusteesHere are the highlights of the Board of Trustees Meeting from Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 7:30 pm:

• Rabbi Weiner reminded the BOT of the upcoming events including Confirmation on Shavuot, Brotherhood Shabbat on Friday, June 9th, and the Annual Congregational meeting on June 7th. Attendance by BOT members was encouraged.

• Rabbi Nichols expressed appreciation for the honor at the gala. She discussed the 2018 Amsterdam Trip for 10th, 11th, 12th graders to support teens connecting with their ancestry through the generous contribution of the Keller-Yakas family. In preparation for the trip, the Yakas family will host two lectures.

• Executive Director, Anita Aronoff, reported that the 2017 Gala exceeded the fundraising goal.

• Homeland Security completed photographing the building in preparation for the creation of our virtual security system.

• Treasurer, Mindy Stark, reported on April financials. The budget for next year was presented and predicated on the belief that we will move to the alternative dues model.

• The board recommended the congregation accept the proposed 2017-18 budget as presented. The Motion Passed-16 in favor, 1 abstention.

• Alternative Dues – Rich Alter reviewed goals and updated the BOT on the the alternative dues meetings and their results.

• A camp committee is currently being formed, and we are working on the architectural plans for the facilities.

• Rabbi Nichols shared a slideshow presentation reviewing the process of creating the TINR Mission Statement. She shared the final draft of the mission statement:

"We are a community that adds meaning and purpose to modern lives through an inclusive approach to Judaism. We live our Jewish values in our worship, celebration, lifelong learning and Tikkun Olam-the repair of the world."

• The BOT voted to release $27,800 from the Hirshenhorn Fund to support scholarships to Israel (6) and first time campers (4) in the amount of $7,800 with the remaining $20,000 to support youth programming. This motion passed unanimously.

• Head of the Nominating Committee, Michelle Klein, reported that a slate will be presented at the June 7th nominating committee including Adam Egelberg, Jen Goldman, Amy Bass, Illissa Warhit, Mitch Benson. And that Deb Blatt, Brian Heaps, Beverly Hoffman, Lloyd Robinson, and Rich Stoerger will become Honorary BOT members. Mark Kleinman has resigned from the BOT.

Tamid Society ... LEAVE A LEGACYThe Temple formed the Tamid Society to draw attention to the mitzvah of leaving a legacy to the temple by encouraging a commitment to do so during one’s lifetime. While many congregants have already made such provisions in their wills, the Society wishes to recognize them and encourages others who may have such a legacy in mind, but who have not yet made a written commitment.

Congregants who join the Society will be treated to special lectures and events during the temple year and be recognized with their names on a Tamid Society plaque in the lobby. There is no minimum dollar amount necessary to be recognized by the Society.

To learn how you might make such a commitment, please contact Anita Aronoff ([email protected]) in the Temple Office. Still not sure if you should participate? Read through Art Ostrove's personal reasons why he contributed to the Tamid Society on the right!

"I don’t understand why more of my fellow congregants have not yet signed up for the Tamid Society. It requires no minimum monetary commitment. All one has to do is sign a pledge card saying you will remember the Temple in your will.

You might choose to take the route Carol and I have chosen. We have opted to do what most families do with their estates and that is provide for our future family generations. However, since we consider the Temple a vital part of our family, the Temple will share in a portion of our estate. Here’s how. First, when either Carol or I die, the Temple will receive a modest sum that will not impair the surviving spouse’s ability to live independently for the rest of his/her life. Then, after we are both deceased, the Temple will receive a specific share (percentage) of our estate.

It is never too soon to think of preparations for charitable bequests. And so, we would urge members to remember the Temple by calling the Temple office, joining the Tamid Society and helping to insure the financial health of the Temple well into the future.

Thank you very much for your consideration."

Art Ostrove for the Tamid Society
