Dear Friends: Amid the constant flurry of activity which is the hallmark of a rabbi‟s life, one cannot help but question whether or not it‟s all worthwhile. There is hardly an opportunity for much thought these days. Sermons, lectures, class preparations, meetings, lessons, counseling sessions all pile up on me. Each requires a good deal of work and then there is the important task of ministering to the needs of four hundred fifty families. Nonetheless, sometimes late at night, or even following the excitement of a successful program, questions begin to bother me: “What is the meaning and the purpose of my labor?” “Is it really worth all of the heartache and the concern?” You see, when a rabbi looks at the hectic pace of Temple life, how can he know if anything really lasting has taken place, whether lives have been genuinely affected, whether the cause of Judaism has been truly advanced? Once in a while, however, something very beautiful happens and it lifts the spirits of all of all of us who strive dili- gently without knowing how to measure our success. Sometimes it occurs during a worship service, sometimes through a softly spoken word of appreciation, perhaps in the naming of a child born to a young couple in our congregation. As much as I appreciate these moments, they are hard to share. Recently, however, I received two messages one a letter and the other via email parts of which I do wish to share with you. I was very gratified, not for myself alone, but on behalf of all of us who strive to make Judaism live in the lives of our young people. These messages speak for themselves: Dear Rabbi Pinsky: Thank you for taking the time to write the letter of recommendation for me…My family and I were very touched by your words and I am going to hold on to a copy of the letter and treasure it. Regardless of the outcome, your words were an affirmation of all that I have and will try to accomplish. My Bar Mitzvah was a day of awakening for me. I can‟t exactly tell you how everything fell into place from that day on – but it did. I‟m sure you prayed extra hard for the Lord to bless me because you knew I needed a little more help than the average student. Your confirmation classes instilled a sense of Tikkun Olam and my involvement in Youth Group and attendance at Camp Coleman rounded out my Jewish identity and my spirituality. Upon completion of Confirmation, it was en- riching to return to the bimah as a reader of Torah or to rest it on my shoulder as I walked with it through our con- gregation. As I embark upon my college experience…I promise to uphold my commitment to social justice. I will al- ways be mindful of your teaching and will continue my pursuit of a career in public service. I hope to continue to make you proud. Continued on Page 3... Sivan / Tamuz / Av / Elul 5770| June / July / August 2010 Rabbi‟s Voice Rabbi Stephen H. Dear Friends:

Amid the constant flurry of activity which is the hallmark of a rabbi‟s life, one cannot help but question whether or not it‟s all worthwhile. There is hardly an opportunity for much thought these days. Sermons, lectures, class preparations, meetings, lessons, counseling sessions all pile up on me. Each requires a good deal of work and then there is the important task of ministering to the needs of four hundred fifty families. Nonetheless, sometimes late at night, or even following the excitement of a successful program, questions begin to bother me: “What is the meaning and the purpose of my labor?” “Is it really worth

all of the heartache and the concern?” You see, when a rabbi looks at the hectic pace of Temple life, how can he know if anything really lasting has taken place, whether lives have been genuinely affected, whether the cause of Judaism has been truly advanced?

Once in a while, however, something very beautiful happens and it lifts the spirits of all of all of us who strive dili-

gently without knowing how to measure our success. Sometimes it occurs during a worship service, sometimes through a softly spoken word of appreciation, perhaps in the naming of a child born to a young couple in our congregation.

As much as I appreciate these moments, they are hard to share. Recently, however, I received two messages – one a

letter and the other via email – parts of which I do wish to share with you. I was very gratified, not for myself alone, but on behalf of all of us who strive to make Judaism live in the lives of our young people. These messages speak for themselves:

Ah…the June Shalom article; it‟s difficult to believe, yet it is reality: the fiscal year is nearly at an end. We have begun to set plans for the High Holidays and fiscal year 2010-2011. Did I not just become the President- nominee? It is time to reflect on the blessings of being a Temple officer. It is our great fortune to have worked with a marvelous cadre of officers and trustees. Your work has significantly distin-guished you. We will now have three brand new trustees and several reelected trustees to add. I look forward to working with you. We have now experienced our second totally musical Shabbat entitled: Rock Your Soul. Our two faculties, that of the Preschool and the Religious School have distinguished themselves by having been honored and awarded grants for their talent. Teachers and Directors, you have brought us honor. Our auxiliaries, Broth-erhood and Sisterhood have again generously and unselfishly enhanced our budget and the quality of Temple life through their activities. Our weekly services have experienced great growth in attendance.

The amount of people entering and exiting our portals has increased. The combination of Clergy, senior staff, administrative staff, custodial staff, students, volunteers and, you, our members, have greatly insured another successful year in the living history of our beloved Temple. We cannot properly predict what the troublesome economy and tension filled tasks of day to day living has in store for us. What we can state with some history of authority and success is: the membership and staff of Temple Beth Torah are equipped to great the challenges and together rise above them standing tall. You have all given me the time of my life this year: filled with excitement, joy and wonder. This spirit, combined with eagerness to go on in support of all that is good in humankind, is enough to urge me to reach greater heights. I thank you for your support and tremendous efforts. Finally, I do not have the space or word processing skills to list everyone by name. The best I can write is: I wish every man, woman and child who has touched my life at Temple this year, the BEST for a superlative summer filled with robust health, relaxation , joy and the knowledge that you are all appreciated. B‟shalom, Louise S. Marks, President

Each month, when I sit down to write my article for The Shalom, I usually either have something pressing on my mind that I want to address or an upcoming event I want all of you to know about. Of course, the topics or events have to do with temple life or our Jewish lives in general. This month, my message is personal. It is my great pleasure to announce to our Temple Beth Torah family that Ian and I are expecting a new member to the Barry Family this coming November! To those of you who have been around me the past few months, thank you so much for your love and support…you all helped me push through into the second trimester.

What does this pregnancy mean for our TBT experience this coming year? Well, I am anticipating some musical

adjustments during the High Holidays, a visit from Cantor Wood in the late Fall, and little less music in the Religious School this school year. I know that, while it is not ideal, you all understand that the changes will be temporary. I hope that you can bear with me and know that I will be able to return to you with renewed energy and excitement.

Since I am discussing “Baby Number Two,” I‟d like to take the opportunity to give you an update on “Baby Num-

ber One.” Blake, who turned two in March, has been in Andi Parker‟s Play and Learn class this year. He has learned so much about the structure and dynamic of the classroom during this program and I am sure that he is ready to begin Pre-School in the fall. Thank you, Miss Andi!

Many of you have asked why Blake is not at services. There are two reasons. First, he has an early bedtime. My

mother drilled into my brain the importance of schedule. What can I say? I listen to my mother! The other reason is that

Blake cannot handle Mommy singing on the bimah. He wants my undivided attention and hasn‟t been able to make it more than a few minutes without dissolving into tears. So, as much as I would love to share him with all of you, that time will have to wait. Ian puts it the best, “No one comes to services to hear Blake cry for his Mommy.” Well said, Ian. Just know that, eventually, there will be a full Barry family in attendance.

So, on that note, I want to wish all of you a relaxing and fulfilling summer. I look forward to seeing you at the High

Holidays! Also, remember, if you are interested in chanting Torah for the holidays, please call me at the Temple as soon as possible. B‟Shirah, Cantor Carrie Barry

Dear Rabbi Pinsky: I know that I don‟t have to thank you formally for writing a letter of recommendation for me. I also know that I don‟t have to tell you what I suspect you already know. I love you, Rabbi, not just because you‟re quick to offer a lending hand but because I feel your constant support. I never had much of a relationship with my paternal grandfa-ther because he died when I was only seven years old and I never had the privilege of knowing my maternal grandfa-ther because he died before I was born. Secretly, I love you like a grandson. You have always given me wisdom, insight, patience and love. The financial aid has been a bonus for which I am especially grateful.

Is it worthwhile? You bet it is! Yours sincerely, Stephen H. Pinsky

At this year‟s Seventh Grade service, Meredith Hirschberg, one of the seventh grade teachers, delivered these beautiful words as a charge to her students. I wanted to share these words with you as a lesson to all of us. Meredith Hirschberg Temple Beth Torah, Wellington, FL Seventh Grade Class Graduation Service 5/7/10 Seventh Grade Co-Teacher with Mrs. Jane Gartner Shabbat Shalom to Rabbi Pinsky, Cantor Barry, Jodi Kaufman, Jane Gartner, Class of 2010 and their parents, and the congre-gation! It has been my pleasure and my honor to teach 7th grade here for the past 3 years. These young teenagers represent the future of Reform Judaism. We are so lucky to be a part of the Union for Reform Judaism; it is ever changing, ever chal-lenging, and ever staying up to date with the dynamics of keeping each generation involved and proud of their Judaism. To the 7th grade graduates, I extend to you the challenge of putting into action the lessons Mrs. Gartner and I, as well as all of

your past religious school teachers, have taught to you. I hope that you will all continue onto Mitzvah Corps and enjoy the experience of expanding your knowledge base with Rabbi Pinsky; what an incredible experience being able to study with your Rabbi in a small, personal group along with your friends. I found a reference to a former student rabbi in Jupiter in a URJ D‟var Torah. Rabbi Peter Schaktman said during one of his sermons, that “his teachers simply told us what Jews were supposed to do and what Jews were not supposed to do. Then we went home and did whatever we wanted, rarely making the connection between “those Jews” and ourselves.” I hope you all realize the importance of making this connection. “This week‟s Torah portion begins by saying, „If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments so as to carry them out….‟ In other words, we should study Torah for the purpose of learning it, and we should learn it for the purpose of doing it. In Jewish thought, the purpose for studying is more than simply the acquisition of knowledge. Knowledge and learning are regarded only as means for better serving God. We study to learn and we learn to do. “ This past year we have discussed bullying, L‟Shon Hara (evil tongue), sexting, the Holiness Code, celebrated Tu B‟Shvat with a special Seder, and learned about Purim and the role of wine, while receiving contracts from Students Against Destructive Decisions to sign with your parents against drinking and driving, as well as other harmful activities. We have watched the car-toon, G-dcast, which describes the weekly Torah portion. We have studied the Holocaust, which we concluded with watch-ing the movie, Exodus, perfectly timed with the celebration of Israel Independence Day as well as a musical drumming session with Maayan, from Israel. I hope you all shared your list of modern plagues at your Seders – as well as the solutions we ar-rived at to help rid our homes and communities of these plagues. You participated in American Hebrew Idol, mastering and presenting Hebrew prayers in song and receiving feedback from our guest judges! Most of all, I hope you learned to think “outside of the box.” I hope you learned to make what you‟ve learned your own; to personalize the lessons and experiment with how you will integrate them into your Judaism on a daily basis and how to change it up as you become an observant Reform Jewish adult. The beauty of Reform Judaism is that you choose the parts of Judaism that matches your comfort level of observance. “The entire Earth belongs to God and God gave it to us to use and enjoy – but with wisdom and responsibility. As a teacher,

my goal is to teach you how to treat yourself and others with true respect, no matter how important or not they seem on the outside. Judaism recognizes that everyone has a particular role to fulfill in this world. Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, also extends to repairing our own selves. Every person has one dominant area of weakness (gossip, dishonesty, arrogance, etc.) where they need to focus attention in order to accomplish a “personal tikkun.” Every day gives us new opportunities to re-spond as menschen, as human beings, in large and small ways: by promoting freedom for ourselves and others, by taking care of the planet, by waiting patiently as someone fumbles to find the exact change at the grocery store, by saying thank you for work completed and assistance offered. By giving rules to the Israelites that they will choose to follow, B‟har and B‟chukotai end the book of Leviticus with the words, “Thou mayest act in the world in such a way that increases blessing or increases curse.” The choices you make serve to make you the person you are. The choices you make have an impact on others and on the world you create and are a part of. Continued on Page 5

Parsha B‟har tells us of the responsibilities that we will have as we enter the land. God has given us the free will to do good or evil. God is aware of our faults and weakness, and gives us love as long as we keep the rules of the Covenant and offer teshu-vah for things we do wrong. B‟chukotai begins with a statement that is conditional: “If you follow My laws and faithfully ob-serve My commandments, I will grant you rains in their season…” Ultimately the choices we make have repercussions.” I hope all of your choices result in blessings.

On Thursday, June 3, 58 of our Pre K children will graduate from preschool, marking our 20th year of providing excellence in early childhood education to the children of the western communities. We expect approximately 350 guests to attend this event, and we are so proud to present the first of many graduation ceremonies that these children will attend over their academic lives. The evening will be highlighted by some very special presentations and a dessert and dance reception for the graduates. Thank you to the VPO for sponsoring the reception and to the Sisterhood

for providing each graduate with a memorable gift. I know that you join me in wishing a hearty Mazel Tov to our graduates, and their proud families on this great milestone event in their lives. Congratulations Temple Beth Torah Leonie Arguetty Preschool Class of 2010! Before graduating, our Pre K children joined their younger classmates in enjoying our annual Sunday morning charac-ter breakfast on May 23, 2010. While their parents munched on bagels, cream cheese, yogurt, and other breakfast goodies, the preschoolers played with a cast of characters, which included Sponge Bob, Spiderman, Hello Kitty, and Donald Duck. A terrific time was had by all! The VPO truly outdid themselves this year, not only providing a fun morning for all, but also raising needed funds for our school. Special thanks to Vicki Buckstein for chairing this memorable event. As we get ready to start an exciting summer, there are more than 60 children enrolled in our Enrichment Camp! Although time is short, there is still time to sign-up for our exciting camp program for children 2-5 years old. Remember, you can cus-tomize our camp program to accommodate your summer vacation and travel plans by choosing the weeks and days that you would like for your child to attend. This summer‟s Enrichment Camp will feature popular weekly themes such as Our happy habitat, Fun in the Sun, Team USA, Up, Up and Away, Over the Rainbow, Cooking Up Some Fun, Digging for Dinos and Carnival. Camp begins on June 14th and our 8 weeks of fun and learning runs through August 6th. If you are considering having your child join in the fun, please stop by the preschool office ASAP for an enrollment packet. One of the best aspects of our camp is our teen CIT program. While earning their community service hours, the teenagers interact with the younger children and provide an energy and excitement that makes our summer program unique and special.

I look back on this school year as a ten month journey of laughter, learning, changes and transitions. Together with all of our children and parents we have joined together with our preschool staff to form the core of the loving community that is our Temple Beth Torah Leonie Arguetty Preschool family. As our school year comes to a close (and our fun-filled summer camp prepares to begin), I want to express my personal thanks and appreciation to the many people who contributed their time, effort and enthusiasm throughout the school year. This was my first full year as Director of this school, and I feel as though I have now come full circle. My daughter, Jo was in the first graduating class of our Preschool, and is about to fin-ish law school! As I look at the bright smiles and gorgeous faces of the first graduating class of my time as Director, I see the limitless potential of all of these precious children.

Nurturing and caring for your children is the joy and sacred mission of the incredibly dedicated and wonderfully tal-

ented staff of superb teachers who staff our school. I am constantly amazed and gratified to watch them greet the children each and every day with excitement, kindness and loving warmth. Their caring and dedication is a reflection of their ongoing commitment to ensure that each child entrusted in their care is provided with the skills and background needed to develop to his or her full potential. The life and learning relationships that the children of this preschool have experienced with these incredible teachers will serve as strong building blocks for their future growth and development. Everything that has made for the outstanding reputation enjoyed by our school within this Congregation and our local community stems from the efforts of

our teachers. They are truly the heart and soul of this school. I never cease to marvel at their passion, talents, and energy which leave an indelible mark on each child that walks into our school!

Even our incredible group of teachers cannot do it alone. We are all incredibly proud of our staff members who support and contribute their own unique talents to our school. Annette Muniz coordinates all of the people and operations of everything that we do in our school. In addition to making all of our trains run on time, Annette serves as the point person of the entire Temple, greeting all visitors to the office as they enter, It is a rare person who can maintain order and coordinate the efforts of twenty-four committed teaching staff members striving to tend to the needs of more than 140 preschoolers. Sharon Lowenstein came back to us this year from her previous position coordinating and programming the Western community activities of the JCC. Her skills and knowledge provided an invaluable addition to our staff. No task was too great or too menial to be completed by Sharon with dispatch and imagination. Those of us who are privileged to see the polished, fin-ished product that is offered to our students and their families are constantly amazed at the efficiency and dedication of these two incredible women. I cannot adequately thank Annette and Sharon for all that they do on a daily basis to make the Direc-tor‟s job so much easier and to make our school successful.

The efforts of our Preschool Committee and VPO are behind many of the innovative and interesting programs and events that we were able to sponsor this year. These involved and dedicated parents provide innumerable hours of volunteer time and assist our professional staff in ways too numerous to mention. Our new playground equipment and the giant shade trees that were planted this year were the result of the efforts of all our supportive preschool parents. Throughout the year they attended meetings, planned and operated fundraising and social events, and provided advice and assistance in developing the kind of policies and procedures that are needed to run our school. Their efforts have provided a major contribution that has enabled us to secure and maintain a reputation of as a nationally certified, quality preschool. My genuine thanks and ap-preciation goes to Caroline Epstein, who again served as chairperson of the Preschool Committee. I will miss her presence in the preschool in the years to come. Let me also wish Mazel Tov to Vicki Buckstein who will serve as our 2010-2011 Chair-person of the Preschool Committee. As much as we will miss Caroline, she leaves us in very good hands. We were also for-tunate to benefit from the seemingly endless efforts of the co-chairs of the VPO, Misty Roseff and Amy Rochman, as well as the hard work of all of the members of their hard working committees. Thank you for everything that was done throughout the school year to make us look so good. We look forward to your continued involvement in the preschool and VPO.

All of the children of our preschool are enriched and inspired by the time that they share regularly with Rabbi Pinsky and Cantor Barry. It is not only the Tot Shabbats and Shabbat Sing-A-Longs that distinguish this school from all others. It is truly an honor and inspiration to see the children develop personal relationships with their Rabbi and Cantor at such a young age. Their presence in our school provides a warmth and spiritual experience that is specific to Temple Beth Torah and our school because of the unique qualities of Rabbi Pinsky and Cantor Barry.

One of the favorite activities of our children is library time with Fran Lerner and Louise Marks. Their reading to our children has become a beloved part of our weekly programming. Both of them selflessly donate their time and their literary expertise each week on top of all of the other time that they donate to the Temple. It is a pleasure to watch them teach and play with the children. All of our campers are looking look forward to what I know will be great surprises and stories that support and supplement the weekly themes at camp this summer.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to recognize and thank all of the temple families who supported our Adopt-a-Class

initiative and our many other fundraising activities this year. Despite the tough times and economic woes which affect us all, the economic support we received this year from our fundraising efforts was truly extraordinary. Be-cause of your year round support of the preschool we are weathering the times without reducing the quality and diversity of our curriculum and programming. The TBT Sisterhood and Brotherhood have provided continued support of our preschool, and on behalf of all of our teachers, students and families, I want to express sincere thanks

for all that you do. Our preschool does not operate in a vacuum, but rather exists as a part of close knit and cooperative TBT family. Throughout the year, Jodi, Lois, Beth, Daisy, Dale, Janice and Robert have always been supportive and available with their assistance, ideas, and friendship. We are most grateful for their hard work and willingness to assist with preschool related activities and concerns.

As my first full year as Director comes to a close, I want to again express my personal thanks and sincere appreciation

to Louise Marks and the entire Board of Trustees for their nurturing, guidance, and unqualified support of the preschool.

Have a happy and healthy summer, Sandy Wilensky

The weekend of April 16-18, the Board and TiBToFTYites spent the weekend in Miami at an amazing LLTI Liz Leader-

ship Training Institute hosted by Congregation Bet Breira Samu-El Or Olom. The program offered board members and youth groupers a chance to gain leadership training that they will be able to utilize in our temple programming. Family Bingo was a terrific evening and everyone who attended enjoyed Bingo, socializing, and dinner. Every child re-ceived a prize. Next year be sure to sign up for Bingo Night B4 it is filled up. JTI planned a Middle School Half Day of Service at the Pine Jog Center on April 22. Several of our teens celebrated Earth Day at Grassy Waters Nature Preserve for an awesome hike and service project. We are very proud of several of our teens who were recognized at the JTI Night of the Stars on May 16, 2010 for their incredible commitment to the Jewish Community. Our High School and College Graduates were recognized and received a special blessing from Rabbi Pinsky during our Shabbat Service on May 21, 2010 at 7:30 pm. To commemorate this milestone, the Youth Committee prepared gifts for each graduate. Thank you to those who joined us at the service and participated in helping us continue to support our stu-dents with your sponsorship. We had three teens that packed their bags to be counselors and headed to Cleveland, Georgia to Camp Jenny in May. Camp Jenny allows us to have the pleasure of seeing the children who live in inner city Atlanta enjoy a camp weekend at Camp Coleman. These kids work hard in school all year to maintain grades, attendance, and behavior so they can attend Camp Jenny as a reward. Stay tuned and stay involved. Your input and feedback about our Youth Activities is important, See you at the Temple and have a terrific summer. Alisa Adler and Mandy Rubenstein Youth Committee CoChairs
