CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM KOL SHALOM 2
My ordinationc e r t i f i c a t e ,f rom the
Jewish TheologicalSeminary reads: “Rabbi,Preacher and Teacher inIsrael.” In this role, one
of my jobs is to make the Torah comealive, primarily for you, mycongregants, as well as for the largersociety in which we live. It is in thatspirit, and with a genuine desire toboth save lives and enhance life, that Ihave shared with you my testimonyfrom April's Marriage Equalityhearings and the more recent GunReform Legislation this past May. Icertainly want to make you proud ofyour Judaism, and your Torah, whichhas many wise things to offer aboutthe issues facing us today.
Rabbi Michael Beals
Testimony on House Bill (HB) 58,Large Capacity Magazines,Wednesday, May 1, 2013,
Legislative Hall, Dover, DEDelaware House of Representatives
Vayivra Elohim et ha adam b'tsalmo,b'tselem Elohim bara otoAnd G-d created man in the Divineimage, in the image of the Divine G-dcreated him.
- Genesis 1:27
Because, in the Jewish faith, we aretaught that we are all created in God'simage, then we also believe whensomeone is murdered, say by the typeof large capacity magazines HouseBill 58 seeks to prohibit, we believepart of G-d's Divinity is diminished aswell.
Every year, more than 31,000Americans die by gunfire. If you canwrite and pass legislation that wouldsave even one life, in my faith, it is asif you have saved the ENTIRE world. My own 17 year old cousin wasmurdered by gun fire when I was only10 years of age. His assailants werenever discovered, neither was themotive.
from our rabbi: Testimony in Dover… Teaching our Legislators the Lesson of the Goring Ox
I come to you, not only as the Rabbiof the second largest synagogue in theState of Delaware, I come to you as aman who literally has skin in thegame. You cannot bring my deadcousin back to me. But you can bringcomfort to my soul, meaning to ourfamily's suffering by passinglegislation like HB 58.
The Torah teaches that if you have anox, and it gores someone for the firsttime, you simply need to makerestitution. But if you know the oxhas a propensity for goring, if you donothing to prevent it from goring inthe future, and it in fact gores, thenthe full weight of the law will fallupon you.
Governor Jack Markell SignsMarriage Equality Bill Into Law
On Tuesday, May 7, 2013, Governor Jack Markell signed into law the MarriageEquality Bill, thereby making Delaware the 11th State in the United States toallow same-sex couples to marry.
Last June, in 2012, the USCJ, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, and the Rabbinical Assembly affirmed that same-sex marriages have “the same-sense of holiness and joy as that expressed in heterosexual marriages,” sharedRabbi Avram Reisner following the decision.
As for Congregation Beth Shalom, as part of the USCJ, we affirm and supportGovernor Markell’s decision and welcome all couples to discuss their marriageplans and ceremonies with Rabbi Michael Beals and Cantor Elisa.
Guns are like the goring ox. Youknow what guns can do. If you do notpass this legislation, any deaths thatfollow as a result of large capacitymagazines will be on your head. Youwill have to answer to the voters ofDelaware and ultimately you willhave to answer to your Maker inHeaven when you pass from thisworld to the next.
Do NOT stand idly by the blood ofyour neighbor. Pekuah nefesh. Savelife. It is why you were placed on thisearth. Please do not hesitate to passthis bill.

from our cantor: Reflection of My First School Year
Dear CBS Community,
I can’t believe my first school yearhas already come to an end! It seemsas though I only just arrived here atCBS. Looking back, it has been anincredible academic year filled withlearning, growing, prayer, and music.
From our youngest to oldest students, our school’s population spent much of the year learningHebrew, Jewish history, Israel, Bible, Ethics, and about theJewish holidays. Our spiraling curriculum allows for ourstudents to learn about these topics in a way that is mostappropriate to their grade level. Our youngest studentsbegin laying a Jewish educational foundation throughhands-on art projects, music, and stories, while our oldeststudents learn through more complex experiential modes ofteaching involving a high level of critical thinking.
Hebrew School Highlights of the year include: Hanukkah Celebration Singing at the Kutz Home Tu B’Shevat Seder Kitah Bet Consecration Ceremony Grade Level Family Education Programming Passover Model Seder Grade Level Shabbatot Kehillah Completion Ceremony Kitah Gimel/Dalet Field Trip to the National Museum
of American Jewish History in Philadelphia Upper Grade Field Trip to the Tenement Museum and
Sites in New York City
Confirmation students spent the year focusing on threedifferent Jewish topics: Israel, Life Cycle Events, andJewish Cooking. This three-part curriculum allowed forstudents to learn about not only the Jewish homeland, butalso about Judaism and Jewish culture in our daily lives.
Although Hebrew School and Confirmation will be onbreak for the summer, I hope and pray that you all will findways to stay involved Jewishly!
Here are some ways to stay involved this Summer:
SHABBAT UNDER THE STARSOver the summer, CBS holds outdoor family musicalShabbat services at the Siegel JCC on the first Friday of themonth (July 5, August 2, and August 30). This is afun and informal way to bring in the Sabbath with yourCBS friends and family!
SHABBAT SERVICESEvery Shabbat CBS holds family friendly Shabbat serviceson Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. Please checkthe online synagogue calendar for dates and times.
INVOLVEMENT IN SERVICESAs you know, we place a heavy emphasis on prayerHebrew in Hebrew School. We strive to make sure eachand every child feels comfortable following along in asiddur during weekday and Shabbat services. This pastyear, our Kitah Vav (sixth grade) class learned Torah tropeand we will continue this trend in the coming years. If yourchild is interested in helping to lead services and/or chantTorah this summer, please contact me [email protected].

got kiddush?
This year your dues statementincluded a new addition—arequest for a voluntary
$36.00 contribution to help sponsoronegs and kiddushes when there isno “event” or sponsor available on agiven Shabbat.
Fiscal restraints over the past few years have not permittedfunding from our general budget for this laudable tradition. It is a time-honored Jewish value, beginning with the firstJews, Abraham and Sarah, to provide hospitality. Wewould like to offer at least a basic oneg or kiddush for ourguests as well as our congregants on every Shabbat. BethShalom strives to be a warm and caring congregation. Inaddition to providing “sustenance,” the time spentfollowing services promotes discussion and socializing. Alldonations will be tracked separately and only used for thepurpose of providing onegs and kiddushes. Your tax-deductible check, made out to CBS can be mailed orbrought to the CBS front office. Please be generous.
family promise: thank you!
New this year, Congregation Beth Shalom hasbecome part of Family Promise, an interfaithinitiative to help homeless families move into
permanent housing. Over the past three years, 80% of thefamilies in the network have moved into their own homeswithin three months.
Many thanks to all our volunteers who stepped up inMay. Volunteers are now being recruited for our lastcommitment for 2013 - the week of September 22 - 29 toassist with hosting homeless families at Peninsula-McCabeChurch. We need people to cook and serve dinners andweekend breakfasts, visit with the families in the evenings, and drivers for the 14-person van each morning andevening. We also need two overnight hosts each evening.Contact: Dina Lipschultz, [email protected],302-762-4341.
It takes at least 50-70 volunteers to fully provide forhosting four families for a week.
Also needed: donations in any amount to help provide foodand supplies for hosting weeks, and assistance to familieswhen they are able to move into their own homes.

Finger-Gordon announces 2013 grant awards
second friday shabbat: Wedding Celebrations
Ever wonder why in Western Societies June is apopular wedding month? Two theories. TheoryOne: Harvest. Couples often chose to marry in
accordance with peak harvest time. A June wedding meantthat the bride may be in the early part of her pregnancy thusshe could help with the harvest. And after a spring birth, she would be in good enough health to help with the next
year’s harvest. Theory Two: The Roman Deity, Juno.Juno was the ancient Roman goddess of marriage, andmany Romans chose to honor her by planning a Junewedding. Other societies choose the end of the harvestseason for weddings, whereas in the Scandinaviancountries, couples choose late June and early July to wed asthe days are filled with 20 hours of light for celebrations.Japanese tradition identifies specific days that areauspicious for weddings... Tomobiki (which signifiesdrawing friends together) and Taian. These days vary eachmonth in accordance with the ancient Japanese calendar.Wedding plans are made far in advance, Spring being themost popular time for marriage in Japan. And……remember the Andrew Sisters song of World War II, I’ll BeWith You In Apple Blossom Time? So, what about Jewishwedding traditions and customs?
Join us Friday evening June 14 as Rabbi Beals discussestraditional Jewish wedding customs, why June is a popularmonth, the history and significance of the ketubah, theLieberman clause, the chuppah, breaking of a glass, and theseries of laws instituted by the Rabbis to protect the wife.
For our Oneg Shabbat, you are encouraged to bring yourwedding photograph(s) and ketubah to share memoriesof your wedding celebration. Reminder: Second FridayServices begin at 8:00pm. This Friday Service, RabbiMichael and Cantor Elisa will offer special blessings forcouples celebrating their June Wedding Anniversaries.

legacy society: A Teacher and A Chemist - Living Through Giving Back
Arlene and Robert Davis joined Congregation Beth Shalom in1971 for several reasons. They are most comfortable in aconservative synagogue, and especially one that has become
egalitarian. They also appreciate the warm welcome to the unaffiliated.Arlene taught and administered at the Beth Shalom Hebrew School for 33years as well as chanting Torah for the High Holy Days and otheroccasions. She taught and trained B’nai Mitzvah for both children andadults. Robert has served on the Board of Directors, was on severalcommittees at the synagogue, and chaired or co-chaired several events, thelargest being the Jewish Festival in 1980 and 1981.
Both Arlene and Robert feel grateful for many positive experiences in which they participated at Beth Shalom and stronglywish to have many other couples share similar experiences in the future. We believe one of the best ways to insure a strongand vibrant synagogue is to join the Legacy Society. We hope the Legacy Society will continue to grow and thrive.
About the photograph:We were on a trip of our own design in 2006 to Greece and the Greek Islands. One morning we took a flight to Thessalonike, the secondlargest city in Greece, at the top of the Adriatic Sea. Prior to World War II, it had the largest Jewish population in the country. Arlene isplacing a rock on the base of the sculpture in memory of the Jews who perished during the Holocaust.
There’s a bit more to the story. When the Nazis occupied Greece they demanded from the mayor of Thessalonike the names of the Jewsresiding in the city. He refused. The Nazi general then requested the same information from the chief rabbi of Thessalonike and therabbi gave him the information he was looking for. The rabbi assumed that by being cooperative, the Jews would be treated humanely.
