design that you will need, firstselect a mask size and print outthe pattern by clicking on theappropriate mask size below.

Clicking on one of these optionswill open a PDF file with printablemask pattern pieces. Be sure thatthe patterns are scaled to 100%before printing.

Face mask pattern: Small size

Face mask pattern: Medium size

Face mask pattern: Large size

On both of the "Outer" patternpieces there is a max embroideryarea outlined by a dotted line. This helps show both how big theembroidery design can be andalso how to position the designon the mask when cutting out thepattern.

Due to the organic shape of theembroidery area, we've createdan embroidery sizing guide. Thisguide shows the measurementsof the max embroidery area inmany different ways. It will help tochoose a design that fits in theembroidery area. Use theseguides to pick an embroiderydesign that fits in the maxembroidery area. Keep in mindthat some designs may fit betterwhen rotated. Make sure to scalethe sizing guide to 100% whenprinting.

Click here to view and print thesizing guide for all sizes of themask.

When picking a design, reallythink about placement. If thedesign is the same size orsmaller than the max embroideryarea, then it can be centered

perfectly on the mask.

If the embroidery design is largerthan the max embroidery area, orpositioned outside of it, it can goall the way to the edges of themask. Simply make sure thedesign is tall or wide enough togo over the side (or sides) toachieve this look.

After you have selected yourdesign, but before you have cutout your pattern pieces, you willneed to embroider the design onyour chosen fabric. It is importantthat the design is embroideredbefore the patterns have beencut. We will be using water-soluble stabilizer during theembroidery process for thisproject.

There are a couple different kindsof water-soluble stabilizer. One isclear and plastic. That brand isSulky Ultra Solvy. The otherbrand is soft and fibrous and iscalled Vilene. Both work well.Vilene is used in thisdemonstration.

For best results, use a size 11 ora 75/11 sharp sewing needle. Asharp sewing needle has asmaller, finer point than anembroidery needle and is lesslikely to cause shifting.

To begin, cut a piece of bothwater-soluble stabilizer and yourmain "outer" fabric (on which thedesign will be embroidered) sothat they are both larger than theneeded embroidery hoop. The

dimensions of hoop we used are5" x 7". We cut our fabric andstabilizer to 12" x 12".

Spray the water-soluble stabilizerwith a temporary adhesive, thensmooth the stabilizer onto thewrong side of the main "outer"fabric piece.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizertogether so that they are drumtight with no wrinkles.

Load the embroidery file onto themachine and secure the hoop inplace. Follow the color changesheet and embroider the design.

Once the embroidery hasfinished sewing, unhoop thedesign.

Trim away the excess stabilizerfrom around the design, beingcareful not to cut into any of theembroidery so as to preventfraying.

Press the fabric and embroiderywith an iron to remove anywrinkles and puckering. This willallow the pattern lie better overthe embroidery and allow thefabric to cut out more cleanly.

Locate the max embroidery areaon the "outer" pattern pieces. This area is outlined in a dottedline, and sits 3/8" in from allseams on the mask.

How this pattern piece and themax embroidery area arepositioned over the sewnembroidery will determine wherethe design sits on the finishedmask.

If the design is kept inside of themax embroidery area, it will becentered on the side of the mask, and will sit at least 3/8" awayfrom the seams.

If the design goes outside of themax embroidery area it will endup very close to or even over theseams. This creates a look of theembroidery going all the way tothe edges of the mask when themask is completed.

To center the design on themask, trim the printed maskpattern around the outside of thesolid black line.

Position it over the embroidereddesign carefully, so all of theembroidery stays within thedotted lines. Use temporaryspray adhesive or pins to hold

the pattern piece in place. Whenkept inside this shape theembroidery will be at least 3/8"away from he seams on all sides.

To make the design go past oneor more edges of the mask, trimthe printed mask pattern aroundthe outside of the solid black line.

Position it over the embroidereddesign carefully, so theembroidery goes past the dottedline on your desired sides. If theembroidery is 3/8" or more pastthe edges of the dotted line it willbe sewn into seam and createthe look of the embroidery goingall the way to the edge. Usetemporary spray adhesive or pinsto hold the pattern piece in place.

Make sure the pattern is adheredor pinned in place, and that thepattern and embroidery arepositioned as desired.

Then cut out the first outerpattern piece following the solidblack outline. If the embroidery iscut in this step and starts to frayor unravel, dab a small amount offabric glue on the wrong side toglue the stitches in place.

If you would like embroidery onboth sides of the mask, select theopposite outer pattern piece andrepeat the previous steps, starting with embroidering yourdesign.

In this tutorial, our embroiderydesign has two files (labeled "a"and "b") made for each side ofthe mask. You can use a designlike this, use two completelydifferent designs on either side,or use the same design on eachside by mirroring it using yourembroidery machine or software.

If you would like embroider ononly one side of the mask, do notembroider another piece offabric. Instead, simply cut out theopposite "outer" pattern pieceusing your fabric of choice. Youcan even use fun accent fabricon one side of your mask tocompliment the embroidery thatyou chose.

After completing the "outer"portion of the mask, cut out thetwo lining pattern pieces and thewire pocket pattern piece usingyour lining fabric.

Before assembling the mask, there should be five pieces cutout in total. The wire pocket, thetwo outer face masks pieces withembroidery, and the two liningpieces.

To assemble the mask, firstmatch both sides of the outerface mask with right sidestogether. Pin along the curvededge.

Sew along the curved edge witha 1/4" seam allowance.

To help the fabric properly curve, cut notches in the seamallowance along the curved edge.Carefully avoid clipping theseam.

Now open the mask and pressthe seam allowance flat so that itis either to the right or left.

Topstitch over the pressed seamallowance approximately 1/8"away from the center seam.Topstitching the seam allowancehelps keeps any extra bulk flatand out of the way.

Repeat the previous steps to pin, sew, and clip the 1/4" seamallowance along the curved edgeof the lining pieces.

Repeat the process of openingthe lining fabric pieces andpressing the seam. For bestresults, press the seam to thesame side as on the outer fabricpieces.

Next, top stitch over the pressedseam allowance 1/8" away fromthe center seam.

This pattern also includes a wirepocket for forming the mask overyour nose. To make the wirepocket, take the previously cutwire pocket piece and fold one ofthe short edges over by 1/4" withwrong sides together. Press thisfold in place.

Repeat the previous step on theother short end.

Sew one of the pressed shortsides down 1/8" away from theedge.

Next, match up the outer pieceand the lining piece with the rightsides together. The outer piecewill be wider than the lining piece.Pin along the edges of the topand bottom. Do not pin the sides.

Sew along the top and bottomedges only with a 1/4" seamallowance. Both sides of themask should remain open wherethe outer piece extends past thelining. Leave the sides open, anddo not sew them shut. This willbe done in a later step.

Turn the mask right side out.

As the topstitching will be seenfrom both sides, you may wish tomatch the bobbin to the threadthat is being used on the topthread.

Topstitch along the top andbottom edges, sewing 1/8" awayfrom the edge. This topstitchingwill make the mask easier towash, help it keep its shape, andprevent wrinkles from forming sothe mask will not need to beironed every time it is washed.

Fold in one edge of the outerfabric by 1/4" with wrong sidestogether. Press the fold.

Repeat for both sides of themask. These folds and seamswill create the elastic channels oneach side.

Now that all of the sewing isfinished for the mask, soak themask over night and wash yourmask. Both hand washing withdish soap or running your maskthrough a washing machine withcool water is fine. This willremove the water-solublestabilizer from the embroidery. This will remove the temporaryspray adhesive as well.

After the mask has soaked andwashed, press it once again withan iron and pressing cloth toremove any wrinkles that mayhave formed during the wash.

To make elastic loops, cut twopieces of 1/4" elastic so that theyare 10" long.

To make ties, cut a piece ofribbon that is 40" long.

Whether you are using eitherelastic or ties, add a safety pin toone end and use it to pull the firstelastic piece or tie through one ofthe channels created in an earlierstep.

For the elastic, tie the two elasticends together to form a loop andtrim the excess elastic away afterpulling the knot tight. If using ties, skip this step.

For both the elastic and the ties, repeat to thread the elastic or tiethrough the channel on the otherside of your mask using the samesafety pin. If using elastic, tie itinto a loop and trim away theexcess. If using ties, move ontothe next step.

For the ties, the top two ends ofthe ribbon will be looped overyour ears and tied behind yourhead. The bottom two ends willbe tied down behind the nape ofyour neck. It is usually easiest totie the top ends together beforethe bottom ends when putting onthe mask.

To create the wire for the wirepocket, cut a piece of wire that is3.5"- 4" long. Thin jewelry wireworks best, but pipe cleaners canalso be used.

Curl or fold both ends in so theywill not poke through the fabric.Needle nose pliers or wire curlingpliers work well for this.

Slide the wire into the wirepocket. This can then be bent tohelp the mask fit the wearer'sface comfortably. It will alsoprovide a better "seal" around thenose and prevent glasses fromfogging up. Before washing, make sure to remove the wirefrom the mask so that it does notrust.
