Fibre Through The Air:

Hype? Or Reality ?

Shayan Sanyal, CCO, Bluwan

February 19th, 2013 – FTTH Council Europe INCA

• European wireless network solutions provider since 2005

• Aerospace & defence origins (Thales)

• Specialists in PMP: – mmWave (42 GHz) – MVDDS (12 GHz)

• Applications – Last mile backhaul – HD multiple play

WHO IS BLUWAN

• Delivering PTP peak performance with PMP efficiency

• High bandwidth density with low opex

WIRELESS CONTINUES TO EVOLVE

PtP Microwave

PtP mm Wave

PmP Microwave

PmP mm Wave

Fibre

• The ideal backhaul

solution

• Penetration limited to

20-30%, typically

urban coverage with

issues over trenching

and slow deployment

• This directly impacts

on operator revenues

and time to market

• Ideally suited for low-

medium capacity

backhaul

• Spectrum scarcity

• Delivers required

capacity (>100Mbits

guaranteed) to sites

with good capex

• 70-80% network

coverage driving a

large yearly opex

• PtP evolution to V

and E band (60-90

GHz)

• Block spectrum

allocations to deliver

increased link

capacity

• PtP opex concerns

remain unaddressed

• 1st Generation PMP,

fast time to market in

10.50/26/28GHz

• Filled the short term

gap in 2G/3G

deployments to max

revenues

• Now not enough

capacity for 4G

• 2nd Generation PMP

technology 42GHz

offers 1GHz radio

• Scalable 2Gbit sector

capacity with 120-

240Mbit Terminal

capacity

• Delivering PtP

capacity within PMP

architecture

WE MUST CREATE BANDWIDTH DENSITY TO

ADDRESS CAPACITY CHALLENGES

• Typical urban, metropolitan environment • Case: London, United Kingdom • 1.5 kilometre radius

• Existing 3G sites are already dense (2010 data) • 200 – 300 metre range between sites • 10 Mbps required per site • 200 Mbps capacity required per km2

• Operators using Carrier Wifi to de-saturate 3G networks • 20% of data traffic is typically carried on WiFi (O2) • 10 Mbps required per site • + 50 Mbps capacity required per km2

• Operators deploying 4G LTE cells to boost capacity • Some existing 3G sites will be upgraded to LTE, and some

will remain on the 3G initially, requiring 35 Mbps per site • + 500 Mbps capacity required per km2

• Small cells mass deployed by 2014, creating a break point • 100 – 200 metre range, street level hot spot

deployments, requiring 20 Mbps capacity per site • +250 Mbps capacity required per km2

Providing gigabit capacity per

square kilometre is key

Fibre, copper and microwave

will cover some of this but…

Majority of sites will need a

new backhaul system

This system must provide

scalable capacity for

unplanned explosive growth

• Using Bluwan’s LinkFusion solution, operators can create 4 sectors of coverage with a range of up to 2 km, generating up to 10 Gigabits per Second of capacity

• 1 backhaul system for 3G, 4G, wifi, small cells

LINKFUSION FTTA CASE STUDY

• LinkFusion FTTA deployment for a UK 42 GHz license holder

• Gateshead, UK • Muni-project for 4 sites

from a single hub radio • Legacy solution:

– 5 GHz – 4 sites receiving 5 Mbps

each

• With FTTA – Sites now receiving up to

100 Mbps – 400 Mbps hub capacity,

scalable to 10 Gbps

CASE STUDY: SOMCABLE LTD

BROADFUSION ACCESS CASE STUDY:

SOMCABLE LTD

SOMALILAND, EAST AFRICA

Page 7: Shayan sanyal

SOMCABLE LTD • Roll out to 5 countries in East Africa

• Using Bluwan’s 12 GHz BroadFusion FTTA

• 100x faster bandwidth than currently available

microwave options

• Target customers: 60,000 subscribers all segments

• Services:

• Up 100 Mbps Broadband

• IPTV, service provider OTT

• VoIP + Enterprise Virtual PBX

• Side Loaded Linear TV

• Up to 5 Mbps committed information rate, peak to

100 Mbps

Page 8: Shayan sanyal

• 4 service offerings ($ per month) • SomCloud: FTTA backhauled WiFi 20$ • SomData Enterprise: 800$ • SomData Economy: 1 Mbps dedicated, 60$ • SomData Plus (Affluent): 5 Mbs dedicated, 200$
