Docklands - Melbourne

SHEEPT – Historical Factors• Victoria Dock (now Victoria Harbour) in Docklands was created to meet the demands of the mass migration due to the gold rush in the 1850’s.

• In the 1960’s the bales were replaced by large containers and the Dockland sheds could no longer accommodate the trade activity so Docklands ceased to be the centre of trade.

• In 1991 the Docklands authority was established to see what could be done with this prime piece of land – a disused port and rail area.

• The Docklands was transformed into a world-class waterfront city.• The area is part of the Lower Yarra Delta – it was originally a wetland area containing

swamps, low-lying vegetation, waterfowl and fish.• For thousand of years, this marshy land between the mouths of the Yarra and

Maribyrnong River was used as a hunting ground and meeting place by several Aboriginal communities.

• 1860 - Intensive industrial development lead to a pollution problem at Docklands.• Docklands is still a work in progress. More than $1 billion worth of work is currently

underway in Docklands and Docklands is one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects under construction.

• Central to the project is world's best practice in Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD), with the site framed by iconic waterways, a focal point for social and recreational activity. As such, management of water resources and protection of these waterways was integral to the overall ESD objectives and targets set for the project.

Building on experience gained from the early implementation of Water Sensitive Urban Design, Melbourne Docklands now promotes the latest advances in this technology into the urban built form. Stormwater generated from hard surfaces is treated near its source, using a variety of forms and scales of landscape elements for filtering. Treated stormwater from parts of the Melbourne Docklands precinct is directed to sub-surface storage facilities and used to irrigate four hectares of central parkland area.
