“In [God] we live and move and have our being.”
- Acts 17:28
Vincent Donovan, a Catholic missionary in Africa, wrote of working with the Masai
many years ago. He said the people were all sitting very respectfully listening to him as
the priest, and he was teaching them about the Seven Sacraments of the Church. He de-
scribed a sacrament as a physical encounter or event in which you experience the Tran-
scendent or Grace or the Holy, and he could tell the men were not very satisfied when he
said there were only seven such moments. One of the elders finally raised his hand and
said, “I thought there would be seven thousand!”
And perhaps there are - or even seven times seven thousand such moments! Although
the Protestant Church recognizes only two sacraments - baptism and communion - the
Apostle Paul reminds us that the presence of God surrounds us at every moment. God is
the medium in which we move, God is in every breath we take, God is around us, above
us, beneath us, and within us. So it seems to me that the primary reason we don’t con-
tinually experience the “Transcendent or Grace or Holy” is that, unlike during commun-
ion or a baptism, we aren’t expecting to! And therefore, although God is continuously
revealing God’s self to us - in the brilliance of a sunrise, in a phone call from a friend, in
the laughter of a young child, in the squeeze of a hand from a friend, in a time of grief
and doubt, in the song of a bird, in the surprise of an inspired thought… the list goes on
and on and on - we just don’t recognize the sacramental nature of each and every mo-
ment of our lives.
So here’s a summer challenge: Keep your spirit open for God’s presence in the midst of
your everyday, ordinary experiences. And make a note of the times and places God
shows up when you least expected God to. Then, share your stories with someone else,
and discover that Paul really did know what he was talking about - it is in God that we
live and move and have our being!
Be God’s,
Pastor Bonnie

“Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a monetary donation of your
discretion to the Cluster. If a cash donation to the Cluster is made, a
wheat arrangement will be placed on the altar. Altar flowers are $30.00
and bulletin dedications are $6.50. Food Sculptures are also gladly ac-
cepted.
You can also dedicate a Choir Anthem with a donation of $30. With
ever-increasing costs of choral music, this sponsorship will help stretch
our budget and continue to bring quality music to Shenkel. Dedicate
your anthem to someone special, an event in your life, or just to the fact
that you love music. Thank you for this needed contribution to Shen-
kel. Blue envelopes are in the Narthex for your sponsorships.
There are many dates open for sponsorship and dedication during this and
the upcoming months. Please complete one of the special flower/bulletin/
anthem envelopes below the sign-up chart, enclose your payment, and ei-
ther put it in the collection plate or in the Secretary’s box by the office
door. You should sign your name on the chart in the narthex by the appro-
priate date after you have completed your envelope.
HOLY
COMMUNION
Shenkel UCC celebrates
the sacrament of Holy
Communion at both ser-
vices on the first Sunday
of each month.
Each time communion is served, some of the
bread and non-alcoholic wine that has been
consecrated at the altar will be saved in a trav-
eling communion kit, ready to go to the
homes or hospital rooms of members who
were unable to be present, and would like to
receive the sacrament. Please let Pastor Bon-
nie know if you, or someone you know, would
appreciate “distance-communing” with their
Shenkel Church family!

ADMINISTRATIVE NEWS…. PAGE 5
DO YOU HAVE NEWS FOR THE
BULLETIN OR THE NEWSLET-
TER?
All bulletin announcements should be
at the church office by each Tuesday at noon to be in-
cluded in that week’s bulletin. Newsletter articles must
be submitted by the 15th of each month to be included
in the next issue. REMINDER: July and August are
combined in one issue so all information for both
months is due at the office on June 15th.
SAVE-A-TAPE
PROGRAM
This is the easiest way
to help our church financially. Just ask for a Save-
A-Tape card at the customer service spot at your
local Redner’s store. Show your card at the regis-
ter when you check out, then bring your register
tapes to church and deposit them in the box in the
Narthex. These tapes are collected routinely, pre-
sented to the store, and Redner’s donates a per-
centage of your total purchase to the church.
Be careful to bring your tapes in regularly instead
of saving them at home, as they do expire if not
redeemed within a certain time period. Also,
please return the entire register tape. Redner’s
will not accept any register receipt that has any
part of it removed.
RECYCLING REMINDER….
We still accept aluminum cans at
the church for recycling. Please
continue to recycle your plastic
bottles and other recyclables at home.

ferent charities.
At around 2:30, we will end the auction and treat our-

STEWARD’S CORNER
Judy was away and so the mouse did play!
But Judy is at her desk today
And that means I'd better pray ,
Or think of something cute to say!
HOW'S THIS....
High Cutey….I mean ''Judy'' We missed you, but we are glad you were gone...whooops....I mean, you de-
served a break and we are glad you were away....OH! I think I'm opening my big trap too much, and mak-
ing “cheesy” remarks. Maybe I should go to mouse "holey" confession and stop this tale. At any rate, I'll
shut my trap and take a nap, and pretend this was all a bad dream!

Healing prayers are offered
on the third Sunday of each
month at both services of
worship.
The Prayer Chain list is continually
being updated. Request for prayers
should be placed in the prayer box in
the Narthex, or get in touch with any
member of the Wholeness Commit-
tee. If anyone has a special prayer
request, or is interested in minister-
ing on the Prayer Chain, please con-
tact Freda Wanner. Prayer requests
will be carried for one month.
Members of the
Wholeness Com-
mittee are Ann
Baccari, Ted
Gray, Tootie and
Louise Hine,
June Hartung,
Carol Stubbe and Freda Wanner.
AGAPE Curious about what the Agape group
does? Would you like the opportunity to be
able to pray for others in a relaxed and confi-
dential atmosphere? How about having time
for yourself to engage in a deeper prayer ex-
perience? And/or the opportunity to do a book study?
Starting with our June 4th meeting, the Agape group will be
reading and discussing the book "Heaven is For Real." The
Agape group is open for anyone to attend. Bring your own copy
or if you would like to have your copy ordered contact Tootie
Hine at 610-385-3716. We will be discussing the book from 7-
8 (and will decide how many future meetings we may want to
spend on the book); then at 8 for those who are interested in
staying - or just arriving at 8 - will have a prayer time ending
with a guided meditation (you are led through your imagination
into a time of deeper prayer - only requirement is listen-
ing!). We will be intending to wrap up by 9PM.
Please feel free to come for the book hour, the prayer hour or
both. We look forward to seeing you there! If you have any
questions, please contact Joan Palubinsky at 610-451-
4849 or [email protected].
The Adult Sunday School meets on Sunday mornings at 9:30
AM in the social hall during Sunday School season. We will be
participating in all the church programs during the month of
June before we break for the summer.

I am very excited and honored to have been
selected as the new Director of Music Ministries
and Choir Director at Shenkel United Church
of Christ. Growing up, my love of music and
worship encouraged me to be an active member
of the musical ensembles at my home church in
Langhorne, Pennsylvania. I am thrilled to be
sharing this love with the community at Shenkel
UCC and cannot wait to get to know its mem-
bers better!
I graduated from West Chester University in 2012 (Summa Cum Laude)
with a dual bachelor degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education.
I currently teach private voice and piano lessons in the Greater Philadel-
phia area and perform with illumine, a classical music trio comprised of
my husband, David, (on violin) and my mother-in-law, Jodie (on piano).
In addition, I am versed in opera, having performed such roles as Hänsel
in Hänsel und Gretel and Prince Charmant in Cendrillon. My other inter-
ests include: ballet, European history, cooking, gardening, and high-
intensity weight training.
I am looking forward to expanding the music program at Shenkel UCC
and hope to start up the chime and children’s choirs once again. If any-
one has any interest in joining one of the musical ensembles, please feel
free to call or e-mail me at 267-566-6973 or [email protected].
I would love to hear from you!

SUNDAY, JUNE 15, 2014
Rev. Rob Volye will be our guest preacher, and will be staying for an informal workshop
following the 9:30 service.
COMPASSION: THE CRAZY WISDOM OF JESUS AND OTHER AGENTS OF TRANS-
FORMATION will be the topic for the day.
In the sermon and subsequent forum Rob Voyle will help you explore how to use the
three faces of compassion: tenderness, fierceness, and mischievousness as agents of trans-
formation in the world.
Rob's personal mission is to be "helpful, humorous, and healing," which is manifested in
a passion for conducting training and consultation. He is a gifted storyteller and has a penchant for mischievously
confronting listeners with new insights that are both affirming and liberating.
Additional biographical information can be found at:
http://www.clergyleadership.com/faculty/robBio.cfm
There is no charge and no advance registration required for the June 15th forum.
Pastor Bonnie has attended several continuing education events led by Rob, and has found him to be a thought-
provoking, enriching, and enjoyable presenter. She is excited to be hosting Rob for the weekend, and hope as many
of you as possible will take advantage of his presence at Shenkel!
DON’T FORGET YOUR
VACATION ASSIGNMENT….
Will you be heading to an ocean, lake or
other body of water any time this summer?
If so, please collect a small amount of water
(no more than a couple of ounces) and label
it with your name, the date it was collected,
and where it was collected.
Keep it in a safe place – we’ll be doing
something special will all our water samples
in September!
Support Our Youth!!
To raise funds for their participation in the UCC’s Regional Youth Event be-ing held this July 9-13 at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove PA, Shenkel’s youth will be holding car wash on Sun-day, June 1, during the all-church pic-nic which will follow the 10:45 service of worship. Plan to have them wash off the last bits of salt and grime from winter for you – they will make your car shine!
What in God’s Name is
Going on at Shenkel UCC?
Be a part of the visioning process!
The June 8th All-church Appreciative
Summit will begin during 9:30 worship, will include
lunch, and will conclude by 1:30. Childcare will be
available. There’s still time to sign up! If you have not
signed up and have not been contacted, please call
the church office and let us know if you can attend.
God’s Precious Children
Have you been wondering how Pastor Deb’s trip to
Liberia in January went? On Sunday, August 10, she
and her husband Gary will be at Shenkel to tell us
first hand, and to deliver letters that children we
sponsored may have written to us! That day you will
have an opportunity to continue your child’s sponsorship if you would
like to, and there will be new students available for anyone who would
like to sponsor and was not able to do so last year.
As Gary wrote in his April update to us, “Always remember the reason.
The benefit from our efforts paying tuition would be temporal and futile
if it was not for the fact that we explain to each student and family that
it is the love of Jesus Christ that motivates sponsors to pay their school
tuition; and that Jesus loves them and has a plan for their life. Praise
God!”
You can always check their website, www.godspreciouschildren.com, if
you want to know more before August 10th!
